This begins my traditional "live" thread.  During my15-day repositioning cruise through the Panama Canal and another seven days in the Caribbean, I will be collecting menus, answering CC questions, chasing rumors, experiencing the west entrance to the canal for the first time, giving my impressions (except on food quality), interviewing crew members, trying some new beaches, meeting CC members, and experiencing new excursions.

Although I have my standard list of questions to ask, I encourage all new ones to be posted here.

If you are on this cruise with me, feel free to add your experiences and photos.

    The journey begins tomorrow.

We are taking this similar cruise from San Diego to Ft. Lauderdale, 23 wonderful days, and I'd like to know how many formal nights there are on a cruise this long?

We were on the Nieuw Amsterdam in November 2023 and had St. Tropez and Corsica, and they did not have loud speaker music. I believe it was once of the middle cabanas that the Cruising Canucks stated there was a loud speaker in their cabana - Cannes.

We reserved Ibiza for the entire cruise. down by the Dive-In. Boy this is a loooooong wait!!!

My wife and I have sailed several times on the Nieuw Amsterdam and on our last trip from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale, via the Panama Canal we booked a family cabana for the entire cruise. It was delightful and I would be glad to answer questions on the Cabanas if anyone is interested.

I definitely have a question please. We follow the Cruising Canucks on You Tube and in one of their videos they had rented a Lido Cabana which we are interested in but they were put into the one that had a loud speaker nearby that was so loud they couldn't hear each other talk. I think it was the center one but I can't find the video. Do you know by any chance which cabana is the quietest as far as the music and anouncements. We know their will be deck noise which is fine... ShihTzuMama

Thanks for the photos.  The front decks were packed earlier this morning until the heat began building. I go out to my Deck 7 aft balcony periodically for pictures.  I'll put out my New Mexico flag for the Caribbean set of locks.

The canal is much more interesting with a ship following or beside you through the locks.  It is a relativity thing.

Where in NM are you from? I'm from Grants/Milan area!!!

No worries. Maybe I was unclear...I'm good at that. Either way I am so excited to be celebrating our 50th anniversary this way. There's NO BETTER VACATION THAN A CRUISE!

Duh! I am dense in my old age. You are absolutely correct. We pick up more passengers then go back to the Bahamas...

    Welcome to Cruise Critic 🙂

Happy to add you to this one and I hope you have a wonderful 50th anniversary on board.!

It’s not too early for a roll call - there is an active on already - you might want to join it - while some of the people are getting on a few days earlier - everyone is doing the Panama Canal.  I THINK I found the right one for you - here is the link -

Thank you but this isn't our cruise. We leave San Diego October 4, and end up in Ft. Lauderdale (twice!) on October 27...

  7. New Amsterdam, October 4-27, 23 days, San diego through the Panama Canal to Ft. Lauderdale back to the  Bahamas then back to Ft. Lauderdale.  This is our 12th cruise, #3 on HAL. We are celebrating our 50th anniversary. I am shopping already and it is so much fun. I tried setting up a role call but I either did it wrong or it is too early...
