    Cool Cruiser
  1. We have stayed in SC5186. Shower is too small to be comfortable and I am not a large person. The shower liner is very light and not long enough and is prone to allowing water to leak onto the floor especiially if the door to the bathroom is not closed. The tub works fine as an alternate.

    Oosterdam Suite SC6158 Pros/Cons?

We were on the sister ship Westerdam for a Christmas cruise. We had room SC5186 which is right below the suite you have booked. The room is very nice and the deck is awesome. We book simialr ooms on Celebrity and this room/deck combo is a better result. The shower stall is very cramped but that is the only gripe we had about the room. You can always use the tub to shower if you need more elbow room. We had a large group and we love the rooms an decks. A huge disappointment was the propulsion system vibration that we experienced . I wrote a letter to HAL about this and below is an excerpt rom that letter... "What will stop us, and in fact is a huge impediment to us going with HAL on one of our next cruises, is the propulsion system generated noises and vibrations that we experienced on three of the nights. I cannot possibly convey to you the disappointment that we experienced with respect to this annoyance. Being a vehicle propulsion system design expert, albeit not ship systems, and after having sailed with aft deck suites on both Celebrity and Princess, I can assure you that I would consider the system feedback to be commercially unacceptable. At heavier loads and speeds in the upper operating range (18+ knots), which unfortunately happened to occur while we were trying to sleep at night, the vibrations generated by the propulsion system excited ceiling panels, the floor, objects in the closet, wiring or other objects resting on the unseen side of ceiling tiles, vibrated objects onto the floor from tables and shelves and even shook the bed. The beating phenomenon indicated that the props were coming in and out of phase so that it went from annoying to damned right obnoxious in sinusoidal rhythmic harmony. We had three nights where we struggled to sleep and got up the next day very tired. This lack of sleep kind of took the edge off the day’s activities and was the big negative for the whole cruise. This interference was so bad that I can only rationalize that this ship was having a problem on this particular cruise. The general fe eling was that we had each paid a laot of money for a suite next to the engine room. We are currently planning our next cruise adventures which include the Norwegian fiords and another European trip. Our problem is that we have already done the Celebrity itineraries on both the Millennium and Constellation. Princess is a distant but unlikely possibility. Holland America has some nice itineraries and the best deck layout we can find, but after this experience we cannot take a chance on another noisy, uncomfortable accommodation like we have just experienced." We are hoping that HAL will indicate, by virtue of a reply, that this was an isolated problem with this ship. The rest of the cruise, other than some minor annoyances, was nearly up to our experiences on Celebrity.

    Back to HAL!!!

I agree with this assessment. HAL, IMO is a very close second to Celebrity in terms of food, service and rooms. The suite deck layouts are far superior on HAL for larger groups. The HAL VISTA class deck layouts are great, especially if you like to run,jog or walk. The design execution of the ship propulsion system is nowhere near that of Celebrity. HAL is noisy and, in some rooms at the back of the ship, very intrusive. The speicaly restaurant on HAL is not in the same league as Celebrity Milly class ships.

    Noordam aft cabin question

We recently returned from Christmas cruise on Westerdam (another of the Vista class ships). Our group had the suites on each corner and the walls between the suites do come up quite high. The view out the back and off to the sides is very good but you will not be able to view much more than about 180 degrees from your cabin. The big drawback on our cruise was the big vibration from the props and propulsion system. I have written HAL to see if this is "normal" for the vista ships or our ship was having a major operating "malf".
