  1. Thank you. I will relay your message. While she was home last weekend she was reading your food review in anticipation of our cruise next month. She will be ready for it!
  2. She is exhausted but I'm hoping that by going back to work she gets back into her routine and that should help. The people have been amazing so I felt more comfortable leaving her than I anticipated.
  3. I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom. Missing those daily phone calls is definitely hard. It's amazing how people are coming together to help and the military presence is overwhelming. We passed 2 of the staging sights and they were huge. I'm sorry for his loses but happy that he has help coming into assist with the damage.
  4. The last week has been very tiring and emotional. My daughter, that lives in Ft Myers, helped evacuate her hospital on Friday and then drove home to Tampa with 6 coworkers, 2 cats and 4 dogs. None of them had power or water for 3+ days so all they wanted was a hot shower, home cooked meal and AC. The stories I heard were unbelievable. Having to use plastic bags as toilets, doors being blown open, roofs being ripped off, cars floating away and homes completely flooded. They were all hoping for a few days off but they got the call to start back tomorrow so we followed our daughter down to Ft Myers. I had to smile along the drive as so many were driving down to help. It wasn't just the businesses and workers but everyday people. Out of state license plates on pick up trucks and trailers filled with water, generators and other supplies was a wonderful sight. I can only describe driving to her apartment like driving through a war zone. Total destruction. The national guard and Law enforcement presence was very heavy. Helicopters constantly overhead and never ending emergency vehicle sirens. Her actual apartment suffered no damaged but the buildings are not livable. The first floors flooded and are caked with mud. Dead fish are covering the parking lot, the smell is awful. Dumpsters are full so the sidewalks are piled high with garbage. The community is working hard but they are overwhelmed. She will now be going from house to house, sleeping on co workers sofas, but they are all safe. Many tears have been shed and I'm sure there will be many more but once again I had to smile when she called me tonight to tell me that the neighbor, that we met this afternoon, brought her a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs.
  5. Yes, I read that also. I'm sorry about your niece. Hopefully she will find another job soon. My nieces house on Sanibel is a vacation home and they live in Ft Myers. Her and my brother both have boats that they moved to her house in FM for safety. They are headed back home tomorrow so I'm sure they will boat out to assess the damage as soon as possible.
  6. We were lucky in Tampa. Lost power for about 12 hours and had about an hour of yard clean up this morning. I grew up in Ft Myers and still have family and friends in the area. My daughter was able to get back to her apartment this morning after the water had gone down. Cars had floated away and the first floor had a lot of water damage. It looked like she was living on the beach. Luckily she is on the 2nd floor so no damage. A co workers car was washed away and landed in a pile with a few others at their hospital. My brother and niece both have homes on the islands near by. My brother in St James City and niece on Captiva. They evacuated but have seen videos and heard from neighbors that stayed and my brother lost everything and my niece has some damage. A High school friend posted a picture of his house full of 4 ft of water. Total loss. Contact is very minimal and the last I heard from my daughter was she is happy to be going back to work for the AC, ice and power. I'm just happy that it's over and everyone is ok. All of the possessions can be replaced.
  7. My niece has a house on Captiva Island. She evacuated with her family and just texted me that the only updates that she has received are from a neighbor that didn't leave. Two boats and boat lifts are gone and the walls of their house are shaking.
  8. My daughter, in Ft Myers, loaded up her cats and all needed supplies , and drove to a co workers house. They are now in a closet, with all of the animals, but as of now they still have power. The wind blew open a door and they decided that they had had enough. They are only 5 miles inland and Ian is there now. Our house has never been so clean or cold. When I'm stressed I cook and clean so all of the laundry is done, dinner is made, and inside temp is 60. My husband is asking when we can turn it warmer.
  9. There is no higher ground that is close enough. I was surprised that her hospital doesn't have a parking garage because all of ours do. She paid off her car on Sept 1st and was hoping for a few more years before getting new car. Her cats are the most chill cats I've ever met. One was a stray that we fed for about 5 years before she took him in. He has survived hurricanes, thunderstorms, dogs, and everything else but he shows no fear. He is very happy inside and loves everyone including her new facility dog.
  10. My daughter was just told that she is in a mandatory evacuation zone but she will be at work so she will be safe there. She lives on the second floor of a new apartment that was built to hurricane standards but she is worried about leaving her cats and her car being flooded.
  11. I was born in FL and have lived here most of my life with 5 years in CA. In October of 1989 I was home alone with our 4 week old son when the earthquake hit during the World Series. I was terrified as everything fell out of the cabinets and later on seeing the destruction. I guess it depends what you are used to because I couldn't understand when people say they would rather be in an earthquake than a hurricane. At least we have notice and can leave.
  12. We are in Tampa but luckily not in a flood or evacuation zone so we are staying home. The county came through a few weeks ago and cut back a lot of trees and cleaned out all of the drainage ditches. We have impact windows and doors, lots of food and water and USB/ battery fans. My fear is losing power which might happen. I say might because there are 11 houses on our street that are on the same electrical grid as the water plant and we have never lost power in 30 years. I probably just jinxed us. Everything has to be brought in from outside so they don't become flying objects. I also have to drain the pool a few inches. I don't know of anyone in our area that is leaving. We are as ready as we can be and are just anxious to get it over with.
  13. We are still on the edge of the cone and a few of the spaghetti models are going over us but it still has plenty of time to keep shifting west.
  14. I was so excited at the thought of not cooking while our kitchen was being renovated but after a few weeks we all wanted home cooked meals. Our kitchen had been completely gutted so any cooking was done on the grill, an old college microwave or hot plate but we had no way to wash dishes except in the tub. Any food in the bathroom grosses me out so I sent my kids outside to prewash with the hose. They were appalled.
