  1. One item that has not been mentioned especially if you are driving to Galveston, is to download the Houston TranStar Traffic Map app to your cellphone. It is usually right about 85% of the time. If you want to take a look before downloading the app, go to http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/layers/

Living on Galveston Island we use it when driving up I45 to the nearest Costco or visiting family.

  2. The Galveston Trolley only goes as far as 81st street and Seawall. There is a bus route that may go down as far the Courtyard by Marriott.

The hotels & other suggestions are good. The Hotel Galvez is supposedly haunted, but in our stay there several years ago we weren't bothered. There are attractions within walking distance of the Moody Gardens Hotel that includes an Aquarium Pyramid & Rainforest Pyramid.

A great restaurant where locals eat is Miller's Seawall Grill. This restaurant is near the Hotel Galvez. The only bad thing about the restaurant is that parking is limited.

Please be aware that there is road constructionv(never ending) on I-45 from about exit 26 down to exit 19. A good road app for current traffic conditions is the Houston TransStar app.

  3. I agree! We are boarding tomorrow and can’t imagine the nightmare for the folks getting off. We may be inconvenienced, but we are on vacation and have nowhere else to be. We do have a 3 and 6 year old so that could be tricky. Anyone have any tips for stuff to do within walking distance of the port?

Within walking distance of the Port is the Pirates Museum, Train Museum or the sailing ship, Elissa. A little further away (you may need to drive) is the Galveston Children's Museum. Galveston.com has a bunch of information for things to do (moderator if that information is against Cruise Critic rules, delete the reference to Galveston.com)

  4. Anyone planning on sailing this weekend from either the Port of Houston or Port of Galveston, please be aware that I-45 will be closed in both directions near exit 26 (Bay Area Blvd). Traffic will be diverted to the frontage roads. If you can, try to find an alternate route.

The following information from the Houston Transtar traffic website (http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/construction/construction_report.aspx) :

    HIGHWAY IH-45 GULF

DESCRIPTION Northbound and southbound at BAY AREA BLVD. Total Closure. Closed continuously from 9:00 PM, Friday, February 26 to 5:00 AM, Monday, February 29. Southbound traffic will need to exit at El Dorado and detour to the frontage road to the Bay Area Blvd. intersection and re-enter before the Nasa Parkway intersection. Northbound traffic need to exit at Bay Area Blvd and detour to the frontage road to the Bay Area Blvd. intersection and re-enter after the Bay Area Blvd. intersection. .

  5. Hi All:

I have a quick question for someone that was on the recent Islands & Inca cruise: what was the name of gentleman that was the Artist in Residence on the Marina?

I am trying to find his website, but since I can't remember his name and I didn't keep any of the Currents, it makes it a little difficult.

    Thanks in advance

    Terry

  6. I tried to use the app on the Islands & Incas cruise, but had trouble with my android tablet . Therefore never got the chance to use the app and just checked email using the ships computers.

The cost for using the connect@sea voice app was $0.99 minute. As far as I know it was not part of the internet package

  7. Thanks to all who took the time to answer my question.

It may be the middle of May before I get a chance to post the results of using the connect@sea app.

Since I don't have any Apple products, I can't use their facetime feature. Might try using Google Hangouts since I have android tablet if the connect@sea app doesn't work

  8. Forgive me but I am not sure what you are referring to, if it is calling from the phone in the room we called home on it when onboard last week and it was apx. 5$ a minute. Worked great.

I was referring to a smart phone or android tablet app that is available. Not using the phone that is in the cabin. Glad to hear that the phone system works well for ship-to-shore calls.

  9. Has anyone recently cruised on Oceania and used the Connect@sea app to make voice calls? I found some information that was posted in December (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=40907680) that stated it worked well.

However I was curious about the cost per minute. Oceania's website didn't have much information other than saying "as well as offer competitive per minute calling rates for all your ship to shore needs".

    Thanks in advance

  10. I had the same problem with my reservation several months ago and emailed the Shorex (Destination Services) Department. See below for their answer:

Thank you for your inquiry. In order to fix the issue, please remove your booking from your "already booked" profile and then re-add it. The package will then reset. We are working on a better solution to this situation.

    Best regards,

    Destination Services

Guess they haven't found a better solution
