A downgrade is always a cancel and rebook, unless Princess offers you a move-over because they've oversold. I've heard some people may have been able to transfer a non-refundable deposit to an upgrade costing more, but I haven't heard of anyone doing so with a downgrade.

    Thank you NavyVeteran!

Did the booking number change? If so, I would imagine that would explain the loss of the nonrefundable deposit. However, if your booking number stayed the same, that would be a different story.

Booking number did change. I probably should have gone about the downgrade differently. Live and learn. Thanks for your reply.

    I’m sure it’s not 2004? Maybe 2024. 🥴

Anyway, are you in the UK?

    T & C are different there.

In the US there are non refundable and refundable type deposits and you see that when you book.

If your confirmation says non ref, then it is non ref. Transferable? Not normally.  Did you book directly with PCL?  If so, you could call back and question them again.  Look closely under T&C online the website first.

Forgot to mention I have a Time Machine 😁.  Thanks for your reply. Only $200 but rep seemed so unsure. Will give them a call back.

  4. Hi,

This is my first time sailing with Princess. Our cruise is not until July 2004.  I initially placed a non refundable deposit on a mini suite. I decided to downgrade to an obstructed view cabin (savings of over $7000). I lost my deposit on the mini suite. The rep advised it was non refundable but I thought it was transferable. She kept placing me on hold as if checking with someone else. Does this sound correct?

PS my confirmation states that it is 100% nonrefundable, but it does not say it’s not transferable.

    Thank you.

You can find recommended vaccines on the CDC's website. A local travel clinic can advise you and administer the vaccines and write any necessary prescriptions.

Hi and thanks so much for your response!  I checked out the CDC site and there is a good number of vaccines recommended. I am trying to get a feel for what seasoned cruisers actually vaccinate against.

    thanks again!

  6. Hello,

We are traveling for the first time via cruise to Cape Town.  I'm kind of lost as to what vaccines are recommended or needed if any.  We are three middle age adults with our fair share of ailments 🤪 traveling from the US (if that matters!).

Any guidance would be really appreciated.

Sand Fleas:  I will be honest with you, we got off the ship; went on the small boat to the dock; got on the bus to the resort; walked through the sand to the bungalow and never went on the beach again until we left.  So no sand fleas.  When we went on the NCL private island, we had a Beach Villa (Book this early also) and no sand flea's.

Placement of the Bungalow: Yes, go to the excursion desk and should be no issue.  Also, like a seat on an flight, just ask the folks next to you if they would swap.

Expectations: The Bungalow are close to each other yet still provide privacy. Not like the commercials of Figi Islands. The edge of the wood that is not covered from the sun can get really hot and this is were the dinning/eating area is located. The food is just OK, especially if you are staying in the Haven on the ship where the food is spectacular.  The Butler/Bar tenders are always great.  You need something, just ask.  No need to leave at all so you can enjoy the area for the hours you are there. The bar is right behind the bungalows so it does not take long to get a drink.

Pictures:  I have none on purpose.  I did not take my phone.  My goal on a cruise ship is to put my phone in the safe and take it out the day we leave.

The Beach: Is right behind the bungalow's.  Skip it. Again, if you want beach, what for the private island. That is the nicest private island I have ever been on with a cruise line.  The Beach Villa is also very expensive yet not all inclusive which is fine.  On that situation, you can have as many as 8 folks join and share the costs. Another great option.

Other thoughts.  I am 63 and my wife is 60.  We loved the water slides on the ship.  Loved them.  Both shows were fantastic and I don't usually like on-board shows.  If you can afford or upgrade to the Haven area it is a deal changer.

    Enjoy your cruise.

thank you so much for the great info. I have just one question. Was access to and from the Bungalow easy to maneuver via the ladder? I have a bad knee and depending on the angle of the ladder, it can be pretty painful. Thank you!

  8. For us, it depends on when we travel. When we travel in winter out of NYC, our local home port, we always purchase spa passes as we typically book an aft suite which does not come with the passes.

In summer, we don’t bother. The Haven amenities suffice.

    Can’t go wrong either way!

A rapid antigen only suffices for NCL's 72-hour test requirement, NOT for Bermuda's 96-hour test requirement.

Thank you Jamie for the clarification. I was just checking that myself. Sorry for my misunderstanding!

Incorrect info removed from my post. 🙂

Another alternative for COVID testing in NYC -

Have you see the LabQ tents around the city? The majority are in Manhattan but there are some scattered across the other boroughs (except SI). They don't require a doctor's note for a test. The testing is free; if you're uninsured there is no cost and if you're insured, they bill the entire amount to your insurance company.

There is a map of current locations and times here: https://labq.com/covid-mobile-testing/. You can register your information online ahead of time and book an appointment or simply walk up to any location and register in person and get tested right away.

They have been our go-to testing company over the last year. I have had 5 tests done in that time, and every time my results have been emailed to me overnight that night (usually by 3-5 am) and I have not been charged any fees.

Thank you Cruisecats!  I was coming to post that I found a CVS in New Rochelle - 30 min from me- that does the rapid PCR test!

  11. Rapid PCR Test - I live in NYC and am having a hard time finding a rapid PCR for my September 26th Bermuda Cruise. The labs that offer them are asking $150 per person.

Is there an alternative? If i take a regular PCR test say from CVS and it takes 2 days to get the results - will that be an issue? Too late to upload them?

Any guidance greatly appreciated. Feeling a little lost. Between Bermuda's fees and possibly our Rapid PCR test fees it is adding a nice chunk of $ to cruise.

    Thanks so much.

Yes, we did make it. There was only one more cruise that went out after us before the shut-down. The cabana experience was unreal. The best day of the cruise. I posted a review of the cruise and there are lots of pictures of the cabana in it. I will look for the link. Here it is--hope it works:

Great review and pictures! Thanks so much! Did you find the walk to the beach very steep from the lagoon villa? I have a bad knee and am wondering if i should go with the lagoon or ocean villa. Appreciate you taking the time to answer!

So glad you made it! We were supposed to sail March 15 (or 14) and we were the first cruise cancelled. Heading over to your review now! Thanks so much!

I don't know when your cruise is, but I will be on GSC in about 10 days (fingers crossed). We had booked a Large Cabana, but I received an email from NCL the other day that they had upgraded us to a Lagoon Villa (at no charge). We actually wanted a Large Cabana, as we have no interest in AC, a flat screen TV and movies ...but it's a done deal so we will go with the flow. What the heck, right?? And I can give you updated info on this then.

    Hi Greenpea,

It's been a couple months but am wondering if you ever made it to Great Stirrup Cay and your cabana? Our cruise was scheduled for March but was cancelled 😞. We rescheduled for March 2021 - who knows if we even make it but am wondering about your cabana experience.

    Thank you!
