I am not looking forward to the emails I have to write next.   A good friend and neighbor of 22 years died Tuesday night, and I now have to notify several former neighbors.  When we left Friday morning, the plan was for her to go from the hospital to rehab; however, she took a turn for the worse Sunday night.  She had been in poor health for a few years, so this was a blessing.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of your friend.  Those emails and phone calls are the hardest to make.  Health can turn on a dime.  The day before my dad died, the staff was talking rehab and making the arrangements.  The next morning they said they only had one more cocktail of antibiotics to try and if they didn't work then all that was left was comfort care.  He died that afternoon.

Those photos are smaller than I expected so I'll try for larger size next time.  At least they loaded quickly tonight.  I've took lots of photos of the ship today.  Can't wait to share them with you tomorrow night.

Tomorrow we are docking in Le Havre, France.  DH and I are on a HAL excursion to:

Land of Impressionism:  A Day with Claud Monet.

It will take about 9 hours, leaving at 8:15 so early to bed now.

I loved my visit to Giverny years ago.   I still make recipes from the Monet cookbook I bought .

Their loss, and your lucky escape. With people like that, you can walk on eggshells for years, but eventually something you say will mortally offend them anyway.

And TBH, I think most of us have are secretly addicted to a show we don’t want people to know we watch.😉

I will say you escaped!   It would never occur to me to dump a friend because of the TV shows they watch.

My sister lives in San Diego. Golfs and plays tennis and pickleball. She's had 11 basal cells removed from hands and face. She wears tons of sunscreen every day. Graham is very fair skinned, so no surprise his beach days in the Sun are limited. Prayers!!

Absolutely!   Sun exposure is the number one cause.

Indeed, the overall problem has not been "resolved."  I was kicked off on my iPad earlier today.  As the discussions on this long thread confirm, the issue is intermittent.  Things may work fine for a day or so or more, and then they don't.

Right now Chrome is working for me on my PC.  Edge is not.  The problem is not resolved.

I had a dermatologist appointment this morning and told I had a basal cell carcinoma on the side of my face and was put on the list to get it removed.

Glad they caught it.   I didn't realize it, but basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent form of all cancers.   It also grows very slowly and unless left to grow unchecked for a long time, fairly easy to treat.   Prayers for you, Graham.

  7. Good morning, everyone.

It is nice to wake up to a CC where the gremlin mayhem is missing.  I hope more of us experience that phenomenon.

I do like Nachos and make them now and then as a treat.   But, I limit that due to carb and calorie count.  The drink of the day sounds interesting.  I'm looking forward to the recipe.   I'm sure I'd like the wine.

I have mixed emotions over today's meal.   Part of me asks why one would ruin perfectly good lobster by putting it in mac and cheese?   The other part reminds me it is comfort food.   I admit I have a prejudice against mac and cheese.  I think it stems back to college days when I would buy 4 boxes of mac and cheese for $5 and eat for a week.   I didn't have the money to buy the butter and milk to go with the box of mac and cheese, so just made it with water.  I vowed back then to never eat mac and cheese again and I haven't.

For those who love it, there are many variations.  Ina Garten gives us an easy one for a busy weekday night:  https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/lobster-mac-and-cheese-recipe-1948798

I always enjoy Dinner at the Zoo.  This one comes with some different seasonings.

And here's another that is slightly different.   https://therecipecritic.com/lobster-mac-and-cheese/

I hope everyone has something to celebrate today.

  8. @rafinmd  Thank you for the explanation.  It sure sets a person's mind at ease as we all wish the best of the best for our Roy.

@mamaofami Thank you for giving us the good side of your new aide.  It was great he spent the night at the hospital with Sam.

@JAM37 I'm glad to hear that things are beginning to look up even though it sounds like DD and DSIL are still pretty sick.  It was wonderful that you and your DH took the little guy so they could concentrate on getting well.

@Horizon chaser 1957 I also found your Etsy shop.  Nice stuff but I'll bet there isn't much left!

I didn't make the beet reuben today, although I was tempted.  Instead I made a big pot of Muzzy's Spicy 7 bean soup.  Except I used 13 types of beans and I threw in the seasoning package and added 2 cups of Cabernet Sauvignon and some extra red pepper flakes.   Mom's recipe was the base.  I just expanded things a bit.  It was sooooo good.

I hope I don't ruin things, but the PC has been working on Chrome for over 24 hours now.  Apparently the poison cookie I got has expired.   Edge still isn't working, so it must still have the poison cookie even though I have deleted them all.

Totally agree with @VMax1700about Canaletto being very good.  It's funny, the new menu doesn't really inspire when you read it, but on both Nieuw Amsterdam and Koningsdam, the best meals we had were there at Canaletto.  The branzino on the K was a perfectly prepared fish -- best fish of the cruise.  And that's taking into account the dover sole at Sel de Mer.  Between the two cruises, we tried a variety of dishes.  All were excellent.

(Sorry if this isn't really the place for review type stuff, but it's nicer to share experiences with a gentler crowd -- tips for future cruises.  Who knows what the branzino might trigger elsewhere.  🥴)

Review away!   We all want to hear about it.   In Alaska Sue and I only at in the MDR one evening.  We did go there for lunch on embarkation day and the day in Juneau.   The menus really didn't grab me and make me interested.   We did really enjoy the Pinnacle, Tamarind, and Sel de Mer.  We also loved our Halibut Fish and Chips at Icy Straight Point.  They were wonderful!

  10. @Crazy For Cats Maybe it is time to inspect around the outside of the house and find out where those critters are getting in.   Years ago I did that and we caulked up a bunch of potential sites.  Then I went around the foundation from inside where the cement block meets the sill plate and stuffed some steel wool in there.  That kept them out for a good 10 years until they found the weak spot in the front porch.

I forgot to mention that I like a B&B after dinner occasionally.  I haven't  had one in decades, but they are good!

  11. From the HAL website:

Guests will be assigned a boarding time to embark, which will be provided closer to the sailing date. Physical distancing will be managed in the cruise terminal as guests arrive and check in. Please download the Navigator mobile app for access to your digital boarding pass and more.  For the health and safety of all, guests arriving to the terminal more than 20 minutes prior to their assigned check-in time will be asked to return at their designated time in order to maintain proper controls on capacity.

Assigned check-in times will be processed initially at approximately 50 days prior to the sailing.  Updates will be processed again at 21, 14, 7 and 3 days prior to sailing.  If the time shows "To Be Assigned" it will be assigned with the next update processed for the sailing based on the above cadence of assignments.

Many of us have seen our boarding times change as we get closer to sailing.  Ours started out mid afternoon and ended up being at noon.   Keep in mind that we all want to be on board early and we all have special circumstances that we want considered.

  12. Good morning, everyone.

CC is still working for me this morning.   I'm sorry @Seasick Sailor to hear that you are still having problems.  I was hoping there was a fix.   Maybe I should have bought a more expensive blue tooth keyboard.

I remember having that brandied fruit that was all the rage back in the early 70's.  You added a cup of bar sugar and a cup of fruit to it each week and the thing grew to huge proportions and took over the whole kitchen.   It was good over a pound cake or vanilla ice cream.  I finally got rid of mine when I didn't have anything big enough to store it in.

I've worked as a wait person and my brother is the chef in the family.   Restaurant work is hard work for little pay.   Despite my brother working full time cooking in a restaurant, he never had health insurance and didn't make enough to afford more than an efficiency apartment.  I waited tables during the summers when I was in college.  That was my tuition money.

Today's meal in an interesting one.  When I first saw Beet Reuben I was sure Rich had made a typo.  But, beet reubens are the real deal.   They say if seasoned correctly the beet can taste just like corned beef.  Now, I don't know that I would go that far!   I do know I had a great vegetarian reuben at the Veggie Grill in Seattle when I met @Cruising-along Carolyn before our Alaskan cruise.

Here's a recipe to get you started:   https://lynnecurry.com/2018/04/beet-reuben/

The Food Network says the trick is in the spices.   https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/beet-reuben-4587830

    And here's a quick fix:   https://www.delishknowledge.com/vegetarian-beet-reuben-sandwich/

Have a great day, everyone, and may CC work for you all.

I know as soon as I say this I will be jinxed but after three days of not using book marks and googling CC HAL ask a cruise question - it’s now working for me.

Now, watch me say I have to use google tomorrow 🤣

Ok, that is three of us.  You, me, and Crazy for Cats report that CC is working better.  I've been able to operate as normal this afternoon.  I've stayed logged in all afternoon and I can like posts and respond.  Please stay that way!!

@1ANGELCAT I'm glad you have trust in your doctor and things are moving quickly.  You are right, it is not knowing that is the worst part.  Once you get a definitive diagnosis, you have a course you can chart.  Keeping you close!

@JazzyV That was a sad story.  That poor family.

I started having problems while onboard the Nieuw Amsterdam sailing August 28th. At first I thought it was due to the internet onboard but no, it’s wasn’t. One of the only ways I have been able to reply and/or post is by logging out just as soon as I finish reading. In other words, I can’t stay logged in all day like I used to. It’s really getting old.

It seems to be working for me now.  I was hoping others would be having the same experience and that we were putting this episode behind  us.

Good Afternoon All, thanks for the daily report.  It looks like CC likes me at the moment.  Yesterday we booked the Dawn for December and I’d like to use CC to gather more insight but it’s been a challenge.  @dfishthe meal looks good.  Tonight I’m using up some cabbage and trying a new recipe to make it as a side dish.  Work has been very busy all with odd things.  That does keep the day interesting.  I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the day.

CC has started liking me as well.  Perhaps the purchase of the blue tooth keyboard for the Kindle was a good one after all.  I also noticed that gas was down 4 cents when I came home from the pool this morning.   Then the next gas station was 20 cents lower.  All because I filled up the car yesterday.

I really think the CC problems are from CC.   I do nothing different and sometimes it all works and sometimes nada!

It is definitely CC.   What I don't understand is that this problem has existed since the beginning of September.  There is a thread on the Help forum from back then outlining the problems.  Why has it gone on so long.  And, now they are telling us to be patient.  Hello?  It is October 19th.  I think from early September to October 19th does demonstrate patience.  Now the ball is in CC's court.

I'm sorry about the tech issues, they are so frustrating!  Also, I like the new avatar.  And finally, I stock up on everything I can these days; I go to the grocery store twice per week and each time I spend about $5-10 extra on non-perishable items, which I've always done going into winter anyway because we don't have anybody we can depend on if for whatever reason we couldn't get to a store.

Thanks!   I thought it was time to have an avatar from the past 10 years.

I found plenty of wine at the grocery store today.  Fresh vegetables were in short supply, however.

  18. Good morning, everyone.

I see the CC gremlins live on.  I was sure that an expenditure of money would take care of that!  Well, at least the bluetooth keyboard works well and it was reasonable in price.  Now I need a bluetooth mouse to go along with it.

I think COVID has made most of us re-evaluate life.   With the exception of not being able to see family for long stretches of time, I am happy in this life.  It has given me all I need and a lot of extras.  The fact that I hang out on a cruise forum speaks to the extras.

As @St. Louis Salsaid, I have made many new friends here on the CC Daily.  That is why the CC gremlin is such an annoyance.   I feel cut off from my friends and family!!

Ok, baked spaghetti.   I used to make this all the time.  It was easy and good.  Now that I have to watch the carbs, I don't make it anymore.

This next one takes it to a higher level.

Prayers for those in need and a toast to those who are celebrating.   Oh, my gosh, that reminds me of something.   Have you heard of the wine shortage?   I immediately thought of my Daily friends and family.

    Stock up!

  19. Good evening everyone.

The CC gremlins should go up in flames tonight as I ordered and received a bluetooth keyboard for my Kindle.  Much better than one finger typing.  Now I have to master copy and paste as the operating system is different.  I'll get it.

Also, the price of gas can go down now as I filled up the car today.   I did that on the way home from dropping off the laptop for repair.   I also hit the Rec Center and used the weight machines and did my pool routine.   Tonight I have to choose between two Zoom meetings.

  20. I have problems with both Chrome and Edge.  I've cleared cookies and history numerous times. I even uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled it.  No go.   Sometimes it works in incognito mode and sometimes it doesn't.  For a while my laptop worked and then it didn't.  The problem is on CC's end.   They don't seem to be too interested in fixing this.   Even CC Help Jenn couldn't log in yesterday.
