The 24-hour WiFi starts at the time of your purchase. You can do it on the Navigator APP or at Guest Services. You can buy in mid-day so you can stretch the 24 hours into 2 workable days. The price I quoted is for 1 device but you can buy for 4 devices for add't $. I forgot how much. Maybe $10 extra?

Here's what I gathered onboard - WiFi daily rates (24 hours): Social - no WiFi calling, e-mail or general internet browsing, just popular social media connection. $19.99/24 hours Surf - Social + email and internet browsing $29.99/24 hours Premium - Surf + WiFi calling & file transfers $34.99/24 hours Stream does not have a daily rate. It's the only level that allows gaming and streaming They also offer Duration of Cruise rates on a sliding scale. Rates go down as the days go by. No WiFi calling means no phone calls of any sorts, not just your service provider network's WiFI calling but any other phone calling APPs. Hope this helps!

Seems like we don't have an answer for that. It's ok. I'll post my findings as soon as I found out onboard. Thanks!

Single Smoking Thread (Use for all smoking discussions on HAL) )

Has anyone stayed in a balcony cabin that is directly under the smoking area on the starboard side aft? Could you smell any cigarette smoke in your balcony? -

So going northbound in the Spring is rougher than going southbound in the Fall? -
Weather along Northwest Pacific Coast during September/October

Thanks. I'll look through the posts. CC's search engine is not exactly very smart. 😄 Sometimes searching on Google with the keywords "Cruise Critic" could give you a better answer. I'm interested specifically in HAL's ships' rockiness cruising the Northwest Coast. So could anyone who cruised this itinerary during Autumn tell me their experience? Thanks!❤️ -
Hi, I know that weather can be unpredictable but I'd like to know the experience from those who cruised along the Vancouver-San Diego coast during Sep/Oct months. How rough is the sea and how chilly is the temperature? I assume the weather will get warmer as we sail down south? Can anyone shed some lights? Thanks.

HI, I'm wonder how the WiFi per day onboard works. Do you get 24 hours of WiFi or do you get a calendar day's duration? Say if I purchase the $35/day WiFi at 11am, do I get WiFi till the end of the day or till 11am the next day? Thanks in advance!

Wow these are all VERY useful tips! I've been really busy for the past few weeks. Only able to check these posts just now. Thank you everyone. Really appreciate it!!!

I have another question. If I need to use my laptop to look up things while talking on the phone (WiFi calling), can I tether my laptop to use my phone's hot spot? Do they allow tethering or do I have to buy the multi-device option? But I really only very occasionally need to access 2 devices at the same time.

Excellent! Very useful answers! Thank you! I will have some OBC to use. I guess maybe it will still be "cheaper" if I purchase onboard even with the 20% off now? I vaguely remember they have a WiFi special on embarkation day. Does anyone remember what the offer is?

I usually like to disconnect while on a cruise so I never bought WiFi on the cruise. This coming cruise, I need to stay connected to check in on things from time to time. It will be a Pacific Coastal cruise from Vancouver to San Diego. Here my questions: 1. How far away from the shore line will the cruise be? Will there be cell signals? 2. If I need to buy a WiFi package for the duration of the cruise, is the Premium Internet Plan's signal (the lowest one) stable enough? Or the ship's internet signal stability is not speed dependent? 3. Should I buy the WiFi package pre-cruise or while onboard? Any difference in costs or taxes? 4. If I bought the WiFi package, can I turn off the mobile network on my phone and use WiFi calling to make calls? Does it work that way? I know some of the questions are more technical based. I'd really appreciate some help here. Thanks!

From past experience. Yes, you can buy HAL insurance (Cancellation Protection Plan - CPP) for just one person in the cabin regardless of how many are staying in there. You can even buy Platinum for one and regular for the other.
-
I tried clicking the link to the "Cruise Protection Program" and clicked the drop down plan options beside person's name. No choice (Standard or Platinum) is given. When I clicked the "View Cancellation Policy" and "View Plan Details" I got routed to an ERROR page. The CPP purchase options used to be right on your Booking Summary page when you book online and can be purchased at the same time.

I don't understand. If Advantage Fares are available to everyone, why would HAL keep it a "secret" unless you know about it? Or is that why some travel agents can offer you better price than what you get when you book directly with HAL? Are they using this Advantage Fares?
-
Interesting to know! Normally you'd assume you'll get routed to a Call Center during after hours. Also, is Advantage Fare = Private Fare? Can you use NH1 when you book online on your own?
-
Yes, you get your Private Fare rates, free Prepaid Crew Appreciation, and Refundable Deposit. That's pretty sweet!

As far as I understand, credit card Travel Medical Insurances do not cover pre-existing conditions unless they are stable for a period of time (3 months, 6 months, or 1 year depending on your age). Any change in medication be it a new prescription, an increase or decrease dosage or stopping altogether means a change in the "stable" definition. Any new investigations, tests, any new referrals to specialists will be considered new existing conditions. Reading insurance policies is like reading any boring and long legal documents. Better make sure you understand what is covered and what is not. I think HAL's Platinum CPP (Cancellation Protection Plan) covers any medical expenses upto $10,000 USD pre-existing conditions or not. But $10,000 USD is nothing if you encountered something major. I've also seen people with health issues blindly buying the Travel Insurance their TA handled without understanding the true coverage and thinking they're well covered. Good luck to them!

Thanks for the picture & explanations. Nice to learn something new. 😃 Do you know if HAL's room key has the same antenna pattern as the one you showed? When I look at the actual room key, relative to your picture with the magnetic strip on the back, the safe spot would be the middle right edge of the card. That's where the customer service punch the hole that disabled my room key. 😕

I find the HAL staff knowledge varies a lot. Sometimes you can get 5 different answers by asking 5 different staff members. I'll call and settle with the one that gives you the best answer you want to hear and make sure they keep their words. 😁
-
Looks great! Is this served or self served. I intend to avoid touching those tongs and knives that are touched by many people.
-
That's where the Customer Service punched for me, the middle top area. The card immediately failed to work. I was on Koningsdam.
