  1. We dressed up for dinner

    No 'My Time' dining

LOTS of free drinks on special nights

    Hitting golf balls off ship

    Skeet shooting

    Drinking LEGALLY at 18

    Not getting lost on ships

    GREAT service from all staff

Staff 'mingled' a lot with passengers 😉

Getting sea sick on smaller ships

GREAT music to dance to in the clubs

    HOT food

    Same servers each night

    Late night/chocolate buffet

    GREAT sail away parties

How dare I forget the topless sunning section on some ships! ;O

  5. I'm looking at a previous cruise flight, and we made it off the Allure and to FLL (from FLL) for a 10:15 AM flight.

I know, the ship was already in FLL.... But this does give us some hope that we can make it for a 10:30 AM FLL flight after debarking in MIA.... Hmmmmmmmm....

I do appreciate all of your comments and advice.

We had the fastest embarkation ever getting on the Adv. of the Seas, but that created an almost unbearable crowd at the elevators and Windjammer Cafe (lunch buffet.) On port mornings it was hard to find a place to sit in the Windjammer and navigating around the tables was maddening. It was just too crowded in there, but only in that area. Most other places were fine. The entertainment was great. Our cabin location was likely the best we have ever encountered.

Having the unlimited drink package on NCL made a huge difference. Also, the number of dinning venues far exceeded what they had on the Adv. RCL had Johnny Rockets, but charged $11+ for a hamburger, while on Carnival Guy's is free.  A fountain coke in a glass full of ice was $3.84, but you can order a 6-pack of cokes from room service for $14.18 (both prices included gratuities.)

Any cruise is what you make of it and your expectations play a big part. So, you should be fine on the Symphony.

Thanks John ! Anything beats being at work!

You and your wife meet up with my daughter and me after early dining at the piano bar, Sunday April 6, on the Freedom.  I'll buy the first round, including tips.  You'll come out ahead because I will be headed back to the cabin when it's time to order the second round.

    Happy sailing.

Nice, free drinks! And without the nuisance! Love it!

I thought we were on the same page, i guess not! LOL!

I can see, and even understand, your points.  I also see and understand the other side.

How about as civilized people who enjoy cruising, we agree to disagree?

I feel the same way, lol.... And I totally understand both sides, I really do.

    Agreed!

I'm not opposed to these charges or even the $1 extra. These people work HARD.

My only gripe is that they allow people to remove the charges. I wonder how much extra we all pay for those who don't want to.

I agree that they work hard, so why don't the cruise lines pick up the slack? You know why, because they know that WE will!

We've never removed them, but we've given some staff additional cash.

I know that I'll come off as cheap, but I'm really not. It's the principle behind this.... Great companies are created by great leaders, and great leaders take care of their people.

Given the long history of tipping on cruises, I have to disagree respectfully.

Wait staff in restaurants expect tips, and are therefore paid less in wages.

Likewise, certain crew positions sign contracts for specified wages, with the understanding the position they are accepting can expect tips.

Most major mass market cruise lines suggest the same method of collecting tips, and most make it easy to increase, decrease, or completely eliminate the tips.  What they call it is immaterial.

It's an easy way to tip without carrying cash all over the ship every day and without seeking out people you want to tip.

To answer the question you first asked in your post, do you walk out of restaurants without tipping? Only you know whether you should consider yourself cheap.

In general, we are great tippers.... My wife depends on tips (hair dresser). I never had an issue with gratuities, but things have changed dramatically in the cruise industry. I didn't mind it back in the day when you tipped your primary staff, and the drink tips as they came. But they seem to find more and more excuses for raising them and adding more and more staff to the pot. My point: We take care of the primaries, you take care of your 'behind the scenes' staff.

When we go to a restaurant, we tip the waiter. We don't tip the busboys, the staff that washes the towels, etc. I know that there's more to this, but come on, take care of YOUR people!

  11. I have to say that MSC is tempting, very beautiful ships! But then I'm hearing many negative things. But that applied to NCL too!

Agree that with UBP and Specialty Dining perks, the prices are not to bad on NCL. Again, it all depends where and when.

I miss the Mariner being our here on the west coast, but maybe the Panorama will be our go to ship for future local cruises.

Klfhagr, did you have dinner at all in the NCL MDR?  If so, care to comment on the food?

We did! We loved the Manhattan, we ate there twice. The food was great, the service was great when we had RANESSA. The second night, we asked for her, but they said that she was in a meeting?! So we ended up with Vanessa. She was not very nice, however the food was great. Later, I saw RANESSA from a distance and summoned for her. She said that we should've asked for her! I think that because she is so kind and sweet, she probably gets many requests for her tables, hence they say that she is not available. But back to the question, yes the food and service and the atmosphere is great in the Manhattan.

  13. Am I being cheap because I'm upset with most cruise lines? They call it 'Gratuities', but why should WE be paying THEIR employees?! That's how I'm starting to feel, that the cruise lines are taking advantage of us and making US pay their employees! I l like the term 'behind the scenes' employees! Now we're paying them too!!!??

Just drop the term gratuities or service charge, and call it what it is: PAYROLL FEE!

    We appreciate the review....

Confirms  that NCL  is not for us ..seems too casual for our style,   even more so than Royal C ...Not interested in beer challenges, etc.  We like to relax and  chill,   prefer mellow lounges, enjoy the spa and Solarium, thermal suites / Persian Gardens...upscale dining and good live music  and  a few nice shows we can follow

But we think comparative  reviews are very helpful..thanks for taking the time to post .  After our  2 booked on EDGE which will be something  very different and exciting, we are thinking of trying Oceania or Azamara.

Understood, but a few things .. the beer challenge is very low key, hardly anyone knows about it. Yes, it is very casual, I will admit that. If you want to dress up, you can. But, you touched on quite a few things that you enjoy, and NCL matches those to a T... I really think NCL has the best spas at sea (excluding luxary cruises).. and there specialty restaurants are better than Princess and equal to X (we did a few on X). Music and shows that you enjoy..... If you ever decide to 'caj' down a bit, I think you'd like NCL.

Been on all the mass marketed limes and a few lines that have gone to heaven or some strange place. For us, NCL answered our needs the most: Princess, the least. I do like Celebrity but their pricing is higher. though we are at the age level with some health issues that may cause us to put cruising on the shelf, I am glad we have had the chance to cruise so much and yes, for any remaining cruises it will be NCL> Let me also add, the guest are NCL, overall seem to be the most fun.

I agree 100% with you! The only thing that I've noticed, is that sometimes NCL's prices are higher than X. I guess it all depends on the season, ports, newer ship, etc. We want to do the NCL Joy when it visits the west coast, but for the same cruise, we can do the Carnival Panorama for 1000K LESS! I know that CCL will be home based here, so I figure that has a lot to do with the pricing, vs the Joy just visiting for a month or so....

We might be adding MSC to our list, even though we've heard MANY negative things about them! But we heard many bad things about NCL and love it! We'll see!
