  1. Thanks to all for answering my question. It pleases me to know there are coins on the HAL ships. I'll be on the Rotterdam in two weeks with several sea days to search for it's coin during a transatlantic. Hopefully will post a picture after returning.

  2. Does anyone know if HAL ships have a lucky coin somewhere on any or all of their ships. Several other cruise lines have these coins. Carnival and NCL for example. These coins are usually a replica of the coin that is attached to the keel and are placed in not very obvious places. Fun to look for as you explore the ship.

  3. We just got off of the Rotterdam on Sunday, March 25. Lanai cabin 3376. I would not book this cabin again. Because it is directly below the MDR galley, there is a lot of noise of equipment running through the night. This type of noise could affect most even-numbered Lanai cabins from the mid-ship elevators all the way to the aft elevators.

There are semi-permanent signs on each Lanai chair indicating that the chair is reserved for the Lanai cabin guests. See pix below. Still, some people refuse to read the signs, or, one guy claimed to not be able to read English, even though the book he was reading in our chair was in English. He left.

Tad, thanks for the info. Think I'll try to change cabins.

  4. I am opposed to having Oprah aligned with HAL. Not because I don't like her politics and not because her books have a social agenda I don't agree with but simply because she is causing the price of my cruise ticket to increase and I get nothing out of it. Folks, she don't appear for free and she does not let someone use her name for free. She is getting big bucks from HAL and you and I are footing the bill, like it or not.

  5. Average age on a ship is directly proportional to cruise length.

Number of children on a ship is inversely proportional to cruise length.

Maturity of guests on a ship is directly proportional to cruise length.

Rowdiness on a ship is inversely proportional to cruise length.

    Roger that, longer is better.

My longest? 112 days, World Cruise 2017 on HAL.

  6. Yes indeed.

Because of the degradation of the cruise experience on Carnival my wife and I will NOT be doing any more Carnival cruises. Food is down. Entertainment is down. P/D perks are down. Service is down. Bigger ships are too crowded. Cruise director was nonexistent as were senior ship officers. Ship lay out and decor on last ship I was on (Dream) was a joke, really ugly, no class at all. Crew was friendly but sometimes overly so. I have 175 days on Carnival. All my business will go to HAL or maybe an upscale line. I have 215 days on HAL and about 475 total.

  7. I wouldn't say this is the straw that broke the camels back but all in all the lack of perks is one of the reasons that I will not sail again on Carnival. Another reason is the degrading of the quality of the cruising experience. I have 175 days on Carnival and have been platinum since they started the tier programs. I've been cruising mostly with HAL the last few years and am a 4 star mariner, 215 days. HAL or a more upscale line will get all my business in the future.

  8. It is my understanding that HAL only provides Protestant clergy for the Christmas and Easter holidays. The rest of the year, unless there are any ministers or lay people on board who come forward voluntarily to conduct services, there is nothing available during the week. The Catholic priest on board will offer an inter-denominational service on Sunday, in addition to Sunday mass.

Edited to add that the Grand and World Voyages may provide Protestant clergy throughout their itineraries. I am not conversant with the protocol for those cruises.

On WC17 there were HAL provided Catholic, Protestant and Jewish clergy the entire cruise for the passengers. Rumor was that there was an Islam Imam but only for the crew.

  9. I'm sure that the big box TA negotiated a favorable commission for themselves with HAL before rolling out this program. So of course, HAL knows. And probably gave consent. Any way to fill those cabins. It is reported that the World Cruise rarely sails at capacity.

True for not sailing at capacity. WC17 averaged about 1100 passengers. However, most if not all cabins were occupied during the majority of the cruise. The difference is because of about 200 solo passengers

  10. Just off the Dream last month, February. Ship docked at 7:00. Self help called about 8:30. I'm platinum and have a #2 debark time about 9:00. It seemed no one waited for their appointed time and everyone tried to leave at same time. Security did not do their job and hold them back. It took about an hour to go down the packed ramp to the terminal. Found bags rather quick and got through customs, no line.

So I think, unless you get off very quick, 9:30 might be too early.
