  1. I will be disembarking in Montreal Canada on Sat June 14th and will be taking a cab to visit friends outside the city. There will only be one cruise ship in port. (Maasdam). I would like to be off the ship as soon as possible, my questions are ---------

*How long is the taxi line up likely to be?

*Would it be better for me to walk my luggage off the ship? (first time "solo" cruiser) I have never done that before.

*Would I have time for breakfast on board before vacating cabin?

    Any info' appreciated. :)

  2. I am flying to Boston this coming Friday and will stay overnight before joining the ship the next day. I have booked a room at the Airport Hampton Inn, the rate is very reasonable (for Boston) under $200.

and they have a shuttle to the cruise terminal for $10.

I hope to board Maasdam about 11 am. :)

    Hope this is useful.

  3. Can anyone answer this question?

I am a Canadian cruising the East coast New England/Canada from Boston to Montreal in early June.

My smart phone plan includes free phone and text anywhere in Canada anytime.

As I will be in Canadian ports for most of the time could I use that while on the ship "in port" or even cruising the St Lawrence river? We will be in Canadian territory but I would be on the ship.

    Any help appreciated. :)

  4. My plans do not change because of exchange rates.

I remember the days back in the mid eighties when the Can $ was only worth 60 cents US.
My late wife and I were living in Nova Scotia and were wintering annually in Florida at that time, even though it hurt we just got on with it and still enjoyed our US visit.

Not much you can do about it.....life is short...... live it to the max and enjoy every day. :)
  5. Do the wise thing and arrive in Fort Lauderdale the evening prior to sailing. Check in to a cheap hotel and spend the night there.

Agreed, arrive the day before (if possible) board early, have lunch and enjoy the ship before the drill. No stress or worry. :)

  6. You can ask for an early debarkation time, but you may sit on the bus for a while waiting for it to fill. I'd opt for a taxi if you can cancel the transfer. Your friends can't pick you up at the ship, or is the choice of meeting at the airport because you already have the transfer?

I do not have a transfer booked yet, I thought I would do that on board. I thought about my friends picking me up at the ship but do not know how easy that would be for them. I have never docked in Montreal before. Anyone out there with any info about that?

Thanks for the info about the bus wait. Maybe a cab would be a good alternative.

  7. I am booked in cabin 331 on Maasdam for my upcoming cruise. Not a Lanai but I love that cabin because of it's easy access to the wrap around deck. I have never had a problem with smoking or early morning noise and there are always lots of non reserved chairs to use.

I always try to get that cabin if I am on that class of ship. :)

  8. Looking for information regarding airport transfer from Maasdam in Montreal.

My flight is not until 2pm but some very dear friends want to meet me for lunch at the airport (haven't seen them for many yrs). Can I request an early transfer or do I have to take what they give me?

    Thanks for any info' :)

  9. FYI, onboard HAL, 'anytime' (dining), is referred to as 'Open Dining'. :) And, in my view, 'Open Dining' is the (only) way to dine, (as long as it's not in the MDR)!

Excuse my ignorance re the "correct phrasing" for alternate dining on HAL. :o

In future I will try to "be correct". Strange other posters did not rail me for that??

What is so bad about the MDR?

  10. I am taking my first solo cruise in June and am wait-listed for fixed early dining (table for 6). I am not sure that is the right move. Maybe anytime would be better. I do not want to feel like the "odd man out" at a table of couples. Any suggestions from other solo cruisers who have experienced this situation?

I intend to enjoy the cruise come what may but want to be comfortable at mealtimes. Any input would be appreciated. :)

  11. I am enjoying your reports and am very relieved to hear that Maasdam is not the "disaster ship" that was reported in earlier posts. Keep her safe and well for my boarding on June 7th.

I am an ex Halifax resident and know only to well about the wild winters. Been living on the west coast for 13 years and loving it. :)

Thank you for taking the time to keep us informed and enjoy the rest of your cruiise, it sounds like you are having a ball.

  12. Hello everyone

    Thanks for the encouragement

After reading all your responses I am going to do it.

This is my first solo cruise so i am a little anxious.

Travelbug: I have early fixed, table for six, so hopefullyI won't be the fifth wheel

Wishing all a wonderful fun filled cruise

Cinnamon 123. Good for you. What cruise did you book? I will be on Canada New England June 7th. Looking forward to it.

  13. After losing my D/W 3 years ago I am now a solo cruiser. On my upcoming cruise I have requested to share a table for 6 or 8 at the early set dining (I am wait listed) but will probably eat alone in other venues from time to time. There are times when being alone is very peaceful and a good "thought gathering" time! I enjoy company but sometimes feel out of place mixing with other diners who are mostly couples. It takes some getting used to travelling solo and I am not quite there yet.

Come what may I intend to enjoy the cruise and all it has to offer. :)
