I hadnt thought of that--rescuers finding you--that'll make me feel better! We are hoping to rent a car and do some serious driving! I love getting out new places and talking to the locals.

    Funny Alaska stories!

OH .. and on the cruise ship .. one night in the middle of the night .. we heard a honking and looked out our porthole window to see a boat SPEEDING directly into our porthole direction! it really was quite frightening .. SUDDENLY .. it veered an we watched as the new captain JUMPED from the speeding boat to our equally fast cruise ship! (they had to change captains when they hit the 'canadian' line!!

    Now scary Alaska stories!

Same friend has warned me about a few things. Did you know there is something like quicksand there on the beaches??? oh doooooooooo be careful when walking upon sand .. there are places that are like quicksand that will swallow you up and they CANNOT get you out! (ask about those!) i don't think they call it 'quicksand' .. but it acts the same .. alaska is surrounded by water .. and they have 'beaches' (not like our SUNNY beaches here though). when we were there .. we were told of a young couple recently on their honeymoon .. they were walking along the beach .. and she started sinking .. her husband could not get her out .. and the tide rises VERY fast there .. he went for help. they could not PULL her out as they would have torn her body apart we were told. they tried putting a very tall metal wall around her .. but the water went over it and she drowned! i think they now have some sort of high power air pump .. and when they have time .. they insert it into the 'sand' .. and blow air long and hard enough to make an air pocket to try and get you out. AND there are VERY FEW signs that warn you. i don't think it is everywhere .. but we sure saw it! needless to say i did NOT walk on it. we did see some warning signs though.

    Funny Alaska stories!

I just found out a good internet friend of mine has been to Alaska and she has been telling me the funniest stories! This lady is a hoot and so full of life. She has a cute way with words! She's around 60ish and you would never know she wasn't 30! I'll post them as she sends them. I think this was years and years ago when she went, so times have changed. Here's the first story, in her own words: i went to a beautiful city park where lots of people were gathered for a fun festival. there was a VERY long line for HOT DOGS .. i got in line .. and there was a huge list up ahead that i couldn't quite read clearly ... i mentioned the large variety to a man in front of me .. and he told me i just had to try the RENDERED MEAT ones. said they were deelicious! i thought: 'good gawd .. RENDERED meat! isn't that the 'leavin's .. and we know that ALL hot dogs are leavin's .. soo WHAT could be so bad that it is left to the end? i thought about it as he raved on and on .. sooo .. when i got up there .. i thought .. well, hell's bells .. when in alaska .. do as the alaskans do! and i ordered me a RENDERED MEAT hot dog. found a grassy little spot .. sat down .. listend to great live music and proceeded to eat my Rendered Meat hotdog .. realizing that the man surely was right .. it was the best hot do i'd ever eaten in my life! i shook my head as i thought over and over and laughed: 'rendered meat .. rendered .. rendered .. OH GAWD! i'm in ALASKA .. he said REINDEER meat .. oh double-gawd .. i am eating RUDOLPH! well, i don't know who's guidin' santa's sleigh these days .. but i'm here to tell you .. even if i had a portion of his RED NOSE .. he sure was deeeeeeee-lish!!!

Any shows on TV on Alaska?

I just found a show on DirectTV on 379 RFDTV about Skayway! Dh was watching it...was a documentary about the locals and they showed the Yukon train ride, etc. Are there any other shows that I can look for? Either about Alaska or the cruise ships?? I used to see a cruise show every so often, but can't find it now!

What would you do different next time??

Both for land and sea it can be nice to see where you are and if your maps are well done, you can see the names of the places past which you sail. we cool!! glad to know it works there. I'll be sure the maps are there too--if not, I'll downlaod them. Anyone else used one on their trip??

What would you do different next time??

As I am sitting here, with Gustav about to hit (we are 2 hrs from the gulf coast), watching the weather channel, just wondering out there what they do with all the cruise ships when the seas are so rough?? I could never never book a cruise out of the gulf this time of yr!

What would you do different next time??

This may be a really dumb question, but do GPS devices work in Alaska?? Today is my husbands birthday and I got him a Garmin......got the kids one last year and they all love it so much--we used theirs several trips and it's awesome. Was just wondering if we took it and happen to rent a car and go off on our own, would it work there??? I may just tell him today we are going to Alaska---and we'll need this--hand him his package ha!

What would you do different next time??

gg, I am getting so excited the more I read these boards! I don't think I've seen a single post where anyone had a bad time and didn't like Alaska. This may just be the first of out many cruises! I'll probably go home and start saving again to take the whole family next time. I just LOVE LOVE this board!! So much valuable information...I just can't believe my luck. I think I may just buy Frommers and wrap and give DH as a gift.....maybe a pair of binoculars and Gortex jacket--not say anything and see what his reaction is. I still haven't told him we're going and now that I've found you all, can't imagine ever not going! I consider myself lucky that we can even do this. Oh, what fun!!!!! Thanks to everyone for all the post to this thread...really really good stuff here and I'll take it all to heart. Keep it coming!!!

    The Perfect Alaskans Cruise?

Ok, for all you experts and seasoned cruisers, what would you say the perfect Alaskan cruise would be? Pretend you are my travel agent and are booking this trip for us. Where would you send us so that we could get the most for our money and see all the 'must see's'? Which ship to take in the most? Which port to start? Keep in mind, we are on a budget, but will do what needed to see the most we can! No floatplanes, ziplines--the $$$ excersions.

What would you do different next time??

vbmom87 thanks for the tips!! I'm taking notes and will take all this in consideration. Don't want to miss a thing! Sounds like so much to see and takes extensive planning. Do travel agents know all this?? I can see why now to at least use a Alaskan travel company.

kenish; I was wondering about the formals......we don't care a thing about dressing up, so may go with NCL, but would be fun to dress casual a few times. I think we better take the warm stuff anyway-since it won't take much room....diss the formals LOL
