IMHO in order for CO to work on non-Pinnacle ships, they are going to have to follow in Princess’ footsteps a lot closer that they are now before they will be able to designate a separate MDR area.

For example they could get rid of the volunteer option of CO and switch some of the top category Signature and Vista suites to CO suites on their respective ships, adjust their price accordingly, add some additional perks like Princess does, and then they should have a quantifiable count every cruise to fill that area. This way those non-Neptune “suite” folks could start reaping some additional benefits for being in a suite.

Great...so I like a verandah on deck 6 on the Amsterdam but would have to pay more for it when I’m already 5 star and thisclose to Presidents Club and already have most of those CO benefits?  I think not.  (BTW, I’ve no interest in a separate area of the dining room which would be about the only “perk” for me.). I just don’t see how this will work other than on the new ships.  Those are set up for it; keep it there and leave the others alone for heavens sake.  There is so much grumbling about this BS idea that I hope it doesn’t last.  But, it’s a great way to chase away a lot of their most loyal cruisers and therefore not have to dole out all our perks for “free” anymore.  IMNSHO, HAL gave out too much, too soon and are now stuck.

HAL needs to revamp their rewards program big time.  Now, I’m not saying to take things away from people that have it but they could “grandfather” those people in.    Naturally, there would be some that wouldn’t be happy but something really does need to be done about this.

I may not sound nice saying this but if someone comes along and gets priority tendering while I’m stuck on the ship, I’m not going to be happy.  And please don’t tell me that they’ve paid for it so should get it.  BS!  I’ve paid for it over and over many times more than ANY amount they will ever pay.

Also, just because other lines do it, why does HAL?  Don’t be “lemmings”, HAL!  Be unique like you used to be; that’s what drew me to you in the first place and that was back in my 40’s.  Yes, you read that right...40’s!

Ok, rant over...hope I don’t get flamed but I am entitled to my opinion.

  2. Unfortunately, the Amsterdam had to cancel Guyaquil due to the unrest in Ecuador.  In fact, we didn't get to Manta either, but we'd rather be safe than not.  We're at sea today.  Itinerary has changed in that each port day was moved up one day and we will have an overnight in Puerta Vallarta and then be back on schedule.

  3. No door decorations due to “fire hazard”.  Yep...that’s what they said on the Amsterdam.  Didn’t even think to ask about the “door mail” that we get daily. My paper/decorations will burst into flames but their paper won’t?  Hmmm...  My opinion?  I really think it’s because some people were snitching other people’s decorations.  There was a lot of that on the last world cruise that allowed it that we were on.

I don’t disagree with you Linda, but based on my experience (and others that have reported), you don’t lose your internet access if you go over.  It might slow down, but it isn’t cut off.

Posting on CC takes some MB as I discovered because of the new forum and I was posting on my LIVE thread and uploading pictures without an issue (as long as internet was working) on my last cruise.  Same thing when I was on the Westerdam and they offered these packages.

I did neglect to say that no, you aren’t cut off but it does slow down considerably.  Plus, it was sounding like the powers that be weren’t exactly enforcing this either.  At any rate, it does (in uncertain terms) that it is “limited”.

  5. The internet is NOT unlimited.  There is a limit to how many MB you can use per day and it differs from plan to plan.  I got the Surf package on the world this year and I want to say it was somewhere around 250MB/day.  I think the Premium was around 500MB.  I looked up info in the Q&A section on HALs website and found this:  "Each package comes with a daily volume of data for a superior experience. Volumes vary by package and subject to change. For a current listing of the daily volume soft caps, see the Internet Plan Selection page."  This is the link and you go down to "Internet Access". https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/faq.shipboard-life.can-i-use-the-internet-mobile-phones-or-webcams-on-board.html

For me personally this is not my style at all. Have sailed out of Vancouver on long cruises that had one of these one day segments first.  A toss up between a casino cruise and a circus.  Not HAL's normal style at all.

I do know an older couple who loved their one day cruise on Princess.

I've heard of these one day cruises.  Also heard the above but for what leerathje wants to do it sounds like it would be perfect.  Or for anyone that wants to check out a ship they haven't been on.  We're getting on in Seattle for the Incan cruise...will be interesting to see how this plays out!

Very nice photo Linda . We asked our guide to stop here for a photo in the morning but he said that he would stop later . You need to stop when the light is right and it wasn't good later .

I actually got that photo across the water as we drove along; we didn't stop.  I was lucky!

I am also curious about this!

I think if I look at the pictures the pool is to small to swim lanes...

Regarding swimming; I've seen people swim laps in the pool on the A'Dam.  Mid pool, not the stern one.  I've also seen people using that contraption where you are in a harness that you tie off and you can swim "in place".  Google it and you'll find plenty of info.  I don't remember what the costs were for the classes in the gym were.

That doesn't look like a real ship to me -- just a drawing.  Not enough lifeboats.

From the article:  "Capacity on the yet-to-be-named vessel, which the company plans to acquire secondhand, will be reduced to 425 berths. Staterooms will be enlarged, and there will also be solo cabins as well as residences aboard the ship."  Hence the need for fewer lifeboats.

  10. I'm editing since I went and looked at halfacts.  I guess there is somewhat of a wall outside.  But, you can still see out and will have light in the cabin.  Below that cabin looks like it might be right at the back of the Wajang Theater.  They have movies at night there with the late movie starting at 9PM. I don't know if you'd hear this or not but if you don't go to bed with the birds, it may not be an issue.  I'd take this over an inside any day; I want light in the cabin.  I really, really dislike insides as you have no idea what time of day or night it is (of course, this is my own personal feeling about this; some people don't care).

Above that cabin is a the piano lounge (actually, the seating area, not the piano). It is at the end of the lounge area and close to the first shop.  From my experience on world cruises, this is not an area that goes late into the night.  This year that place was empty by 11PM.  That might depend on the entertainer that they have; this years was not the best so it emptied out early.

  11. The walk from the Visitor Center down to the Treasury is 3/4 mile.  You will have to do that and then go the same distance on an incline back out.  We were there a few months ago on one of the nights that offered that (overnite trip on HAL) but we chose not do do it but to save ourselves for our trip in the next day.

The first day of our 2 day trip was to Wadi Rum.  Other than the visitor center, we saw nothing for sale during our trip though the area.

  12. You have 24 hours to change your mind.  I booked the wrong cruise once and it was a one way to Puerto Rico and I thought it was round trip.  I don't fly.....😱  Boy, was I scared until my TA called and found that she could cancel it for me.  I had booked online (at night) and was going to let her know the next day so she could take it over.  Whew!!

I would never have a clue what to buy to match - I'm sure they will be at least as good at it as I would be 🙂

I'm sorry, I should have clarified "bring your own".  I get it at my home salon along with the "formula" of the mix of color and what developer volume is needed.  Your hairdresser will understand what you are asking.  If they seem reluctant to give your your formula, explain that you are going on a cruise and will need your color done and you want it to come out the same as what they do.  Hope this is clear as mud!

  14. If you are coloring, bring your own and the measurements for how much to use.  I've been doing this for years after I found that it's nearly impossible for them to match your color, no matter how confident they are.  I think I get a discount due to them using my color.  I'm sorry I don't remember how much the service was.

The staff changes all the time as they are on contract like the rest of the crew.

I've enjoyed reporting on our EXC cruises on the Maasdam, so I'll be blogging this extended cruise daily throughout our trip.   Posts may be delayed depending upon internet availability, but you'll be able to vicariously come along. Generally I write late at night in the time zone I'm in and then post.  I'll put a few pictures in this thread from time to time, but  my blog can be found at:

While we are pretty much packed and ready to go, posts won't start until Friday.

I've already got you bookmarked and ready to go!  Have fun!
