  1. Thanks! I'm glad my review could help you decide on the Victory! I'm a bit sad that she'll be replaced by the Valor, since I'd love to do this itinerary yet again, sometime in the future, but the islands themselves are pretty awesome, too. As for another review . . . :( Sigh. Not for awhile, I'm afraid. I call the next eight years "the lean years," since we have back-to-back college tuitions to take care of first. I did tell DD it was a hard call - pay for her college or cruise the Norwegian fjords on Legend. Might try and squeeze something in anyway!
  2. Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! :D
  3. Glad to pay it forward, after all the great advice I've gotten on CC in the past! Sorry it took me awhile to answer, though! Only just saw that this had made it back up into the recent posts. I don't get onto CC as much as I used to in the past. :( We got our vests from Amazon; they had many to choose from, but I wanted something that was going to stand out from the crowd and these did the trick! Plus they came in the two-pack. One for each kid! Victory Review 12/16/2012 w/lots of pics

Yay! Another Dirkgun Victory review. Been hoping you would do another one when you returned! Great start! Just reading it takes me back there again - nice change though, that you did it at Christmas this time. Love the decorated ship pix, especially the blue casino lions with their Santa hats. :p And I have to agree with you - there is just something about Old San Juan that is very special. We, too, love wandering around there! Can't wait to read more!

Suggestions on preparing to write a review

To start out, I for one love pre and post cruise info and add it to all my reviews!! It's great to get xtra hotel info or xtra tour ideas from people who have already done it! And they often mention things I hadn't even considered doing. Before I start my review, i sort thru/pick my favorite (1000 or so:o) photos and upload them, in order, to photobucket. I then write most of my review in Word, with notes of where i would like to insert x number of pix. Makes it a breeze to then cut and paste to CC. I usually write 4 days worth, then post one cruise day per actual day, half in the morning and half in the evening. Keeps people hooked but not a long drawn out never-ending saga. Then, I finish up the rest of the cruise in Word and post accordingly. More recently, I've started giving a brief overview - things that stuck out, costs, who went and ages (good for readers to relate to), etc - so that you don't have to read further if not interested. And a warning, too, that I tend to be wordy and my reviews are long. :D I use a day-by-day, journal style which ensures I don't forget much. Also, I jot down in a small notebook as I go, things I will never remember later - stewards name, waiters' names, etc. I even take it on tours to note a town we might have gone thru or a good shop I went into, etc. Takes just a moment. And finally, I love the often mocked "food porn!" And always include it! I think it provides a nice glimpse of what to expect, and as one who takes a long time making decisions, it helps me decide better ahead of time, to see an actual picture. To make it all easier to remember, I take a pix of most dishes, and an overall one of the menu itself. Helps to match things up later. And sets my mouth to watering later as I write the review!! So if you're interested in my style, pick one of my reviews from those linked below and enjoy. Hope this helps!
  6. I, too, want to say how awesome your fort pictures look!! You have some great shots and very vivid! I have a feeling it won't be too long before I break down and get an SLR, no matter how hard I resist. And I believe you can never have too many cameras!!:p (But I do have to side with your wife in regards to the Steelers. My DH is Pittsburgh born and bred, and over the years, I have been quietly lured in. I can what you mean about interesting in your house during certain games, though. BIL is a Browns fan and football at those times ranks right up there with religion and politics, as a taboo subject. Not that either team is doing well this year, though. :() Can't wait to read the rest of your review, and re-live the trip over again through your eyes!

    Boarding in San Juan

I can only reiterate what others have said about what a wonderful cruise this is!! (plus you might have guessed we liked it by looking at my signature :p) Seriously, though, I think it was a combination of the many awesome ports, the extra time allotted in San Juan that allowed us, too, to get back off and tour the old city (like having an extra port day), and the beautiful ship itself, although that will change next year. :( If any of you posting here haven't already, feel free to read my reviews (links below). I recognize a few names as having already read my reviews, but I hope i can still provide information for those of you who might want to know what some of the restaurants (SJ), excursions, etc are like. I've learned so much on CC in the past, from just reading others' reviews, that I wanted to pass it on!!

My first Review - Victory Cruise - July 15-22, 2012

Not to interrupt this wonderful thread, but CAROLROY - if you are looking for a beach for St Martin, try Little Divi Bay resort. Open to the public, not real crowded and very close to the port. I would highly recommend it!! OP - thanks so much for this review; I know how much work goes into these things! And even though it might not have made for a perfect day, I loved your fog-shrouded Piton pictures! So many times all you see are the sunny shots. Yours added such interest! And lastly, congrats to your son on Eagle scout! Quite an accomplishment!! My just-turned-13-year-old is only on Star, so he knows how far he has to go yet and how much he still has to do. He was so caught up in the badges for awhile there.:o

My first Review - Victory Cruise - July 15-22, 2012

Awesome! Another Victory review! I love reading about what things people did on this cruise that were different than what we did. And I love your laid back attitude and writing style! Eagerly waiting for more.
  10. Thanks! Glad to help! I'm just happy that people are still finding this useful. The time will pass before you know it. Enjoy!!
  11. I'm so glad you liked the review! Always happy for feedback! Dress code is probably one of my biggest pet peeves anywhere! If I'm going on a cruise, I want to relax and not be told I have to "dress up" for something. I do enough of that in my daily routine! Having said that, though, I think a person can be casually dressed AND still look nice and presentable! This is why I LOVE "dress shorts!". A person does not need to be wearing long pants to look neat and tidy! Throw on a beautiful blouse for a women or a button down short sleeve shirt or even a crisp polo for a guy, along with those dress shorts, and you will look fine. I agree RC was probably a bit too stuffy in this regard when I sailed with them. If you go with dress shorts on Victory you will fit right in. They might stretch acceptability on "cruise elegant" nights, but the rest of the time you'll be fine. As for "naked night," just my sometimes exasperated attempt to bring some humor to this topic. Sorry if I scared you! (or intrigued you?) But wouldn't it be easier if all nights were "naked optional?":p
  12. Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :). I always end up spending more time on these than I think I will, but it's so much fun to relive our trip as I write. (Now if I could only scrapbook the trip in the same amount of time :(. I am starting to work with Photoshop, but there's such a steep learning curve . . . Sigh.)

    Carnival Victory Review May 27-June 3, 2012

So glad to see your review! Awesome start! It'll be fun to compare what you did and how it went against our experiences. Really looking forward to the rest of it! :D

Puerto Rico embarkation - Give me the scoop

I cannot recommend this cruise enough! (As you can see from my signature, we've certainly done it enough :p so I might be biased, though!) Seriously, if you enjoy taking extra time on either end of your cruise, this is a wonderful port to do it in, as so many have mentioned already. We love just walking around the old city, taking in the atmosphere, but also like Buffetfan, we, too, took the Segway tour (several times) and enjoyed it immensely. And I second those that mentioned staying at the Sheraton Old San Juan. Sure, it's a little more pricey, but to be able to be in the heart of everything is well worth it. If you're interested in reading about our experiences cruising out of San Juan, I posted reviews on two of our Victory cruises (which might be the Valor by the time you sail), links below. Hope they help!
  15. Looking forward to your detailed review in the future. And hopefully, you'll include lots of pix! But take your time! It's true - "real life" can be quite busy and hard to adjust to again after 10 days away. :D Glad to hear you enjoyed Calabaza so much. We absolutely loved our time with them. One of the highlights of the trip!!
