  1. ABSOLUTELY!! I live in Everett in the next county north of King (Seattle). My house is only approx 30 miles from downtown Seattle and I only drive down there under extreme duress. During the Amtrak covid shutdown I have driven my car from my home to Vancouver and back a couple of times. Easy peasy except (as @Heidi13 said) at the border. But it's the driving in the Seattle metro area that's the pits and something I WOULD NOT recommend for someone unfamiliar with the area.
  2. Strawberry pavlova -- offered in PG only at lunch. But I have a workaround for that. At dinner in PG I will politely ask if they will fix one for me. Frequently they will, so no problem there. However, if the answer is no -- here's what I do: My eyes fill with tears and I pout and whimper, "Well, they always do it for me on xxxxdam, xxxdam, and xxxdam (any ships other than the one I'm currently on)". And the server soon returns with a fresh strawberry pavlova. Works every time 😄.
  3. I was emailing with Barb @zelker and told her that I was looking forward to meeting you.
  4. And even before the LC partnership we had classical music available on EVERY HAL ship. You could count on it. Adagio, Rosario, etc.
  5. The only other desktop that I EVER bought was a Radio Shack Model III in 1983. Then came "open architecture" so I've built all of mine from scratch ever since -- and also build for friends. I still build a new one about every 2-3 years. From the start they've all been named "Rod" (never mind why) and my current one is Rod XIX.
  6. Lenda, I recently posted on another thread that I still have my first computer, a 1979 Radio Shack Model I. I keep it because I figure that it'll be valuable one day. Or maybe not.
  7. That's me! I'm an old DOS-head. I believe that I was the last one in the USA to cave in to Windoze. I hung onto DOS until 1996 -- only getting Win95 when it became apparent that the application devs were no longer supporting DOS.
  8. Yeah!!! This month I had an offer for a verandah from a gty interior(!) at a very good price. He gave me choices but recommended a terrific midship veranda (V not VC, VD or VE), which I took. He's done this before.
  9. No, actually your PCC can do it. I've done it a few times before -- most recently this month. Upsell number had me on hold for way to long, so I called my awesome PCC and he handled the upgrade.
  10. Wow!!! Strawberry Pavlova in the MDR!! Will save me the money that I have to spend every sea day to get one of those bad boys in the PG at lunch -- normally the only place and time they are available.
  11. Yup. Add that to the disappearance of the Yum Yum man, classical music, chilled soups, the wonderful crew show -- and on and on. And this latest change in the medallion reception can't be attributed to Ashford. He was gone before this happened. When I think back to 10 (or even 5?) years ago it's hard to believe that it's the same cruise line.
  12. Yeah, that's what happened to Carolyn @Cruising-along and me. Our local clinic (we attend different branch offices of the same clinic) was bought by a "large conglomerate" and is now losing unhappy practitioners at all levels. Not to mention how unhappy we patients are. It's a bad, BAD thing that apparently is occurring all over the country.
  13. Carolyn, your PCP was lucky. She apparently was of the age where she could retire. But my awesome PCP was too young to retire -- he just felt that he had to leave because of Optum. Like so many of the other providers, nurses, techs who are leaving The Everett Clinic. My PCP is joining a PacMed facility down in Canyon Park, too far for me to drive -- particularly if I were actually ill or had some sort of emergency. And BTW, my PCP was one of the directors of the clinic.
  14. And, sort of on this subject: Before the shutdown the 4* and 5* were all invited to the medallion reception on the last sea day of every cruise. Since the restart we lowly 4*s are no longer permitted to attend. Well, I have a problem coming up. In a couple of weeks I’ll be embarking on a 4-segment B2B2B2B totaling six weeks on Koningsdam. One of my favorite cruising buddies will be awarded his platinum on the last segment and wants me to be there. So I have sent an email to the Mariner Society to plead for admission to that reception. I have not yet received a reply. If they can’t help me I plan to make the request to the onboard Mariner Society rep when I board. Can’t believe that I’m having to beg to be admitted to a medallion reception. Before the shutdown we 4* were always invited.
  15. Yeah, if you're talking about The Everett Clinic since that awful Optum took over. My own wonderful PCP left because of that, went to PacMed. But up here in SnoCo we don't have too many choices, do we?
  16. And another little tip. At the Welcome Back reception for the 4* and 5* (and sometimes 3*) at the start of every cruise, there are always one or two officers standing at the entrance to the Crow's Nest (or wherever they are having it). One of them is ALWAYS the Mariner Society rep. Just ask which one it is, introduce yourself and get his/her name.
  17. The problems with the medallions, pins, status level being recognized, etc seem to have exacerbated in the past couple of years. I don't know if this was caused by the resumption after covid lockdown, the retirement of Mariner Society Director Gerald Bernhoft, or something else. I actually sent an email to the Mariner Society earlier this year asking if Mr. Bernhoft's position had been filled. Here's the response I received: Thank you for your recent correspondence with Holland America Line regarding Mr. Bernhoft Retired Mariner Society Director. The position has not been filled. However, we have an amazing team with stellar performances reviews who are happy to assist you, in any way possible. But just so's ya know -- on EVERY cruise there is a Mariner Society representative aboard. If you have a problem or are anticipating one, you go to Guest Services desk and request an appointment with this person. On the cruise when I knew that I was qualifying for silver I contacted the Mariner Society rep to confirm that I was qualifying AND that I would receive it. She said she'd check, then got back to me confirming, and I did receive it.
  18. My favorite PG dinner is just appetizers: Lobster bisque or forest mushroom soup, then bacon, then steak tartare <--that's my "main" course, served when dining companions are having their main.. And that's because I don't like a "full" meal late in the evening. Home or aboard ship, I always sleep better with a light supper.
  19. From your lips (or keyboard😉) to G*d's ears. Bunch of us boarding this ship for the holidays. I'm on in two weeks, not looking forward to being on a possibly sick ship for 6 weeks.
  20. Lisa @LAFFNVEGAS, do you happen to know who is the Mariner Society rep on Kdam right now? TIA
  21. Umm, you quoted me accidentally. I believe that you were referring to message #28 by @RuthC.
  22. Hi neighbor (I'm in Everett). Don't know if you've ever read it, but the OPs handle is a main character in the book -- which is why I posted the comment.
  23. HAL does hand shuffle at BJ tables on all ships. But there is only one 3/2 table on each ship and, of course, it is higher minimum -- generally $15 or $25. But the bonus that makes the higher ante worthwhile is that all the beginners play at the 6/5 tables 😉.
