  1. Captain Albert was on our transatlantic on the Nieuw Statendam last December. He gave several talks in the World Stage that were extremely interesting and very informative. He is a great speaker. They were standing room only.
  2. We have sailed on both the Nieuw Amsterdam and the Nieuw Statendam and enjoyed them both. The N.S. is slightly bigger and has a couple of more dining options. It also has a few more entertainment options. I love the showers on the N.S. -best bathrooms at sea we have ever had. I think either ship is a good choice, but if I had to pick one I would say pick the N.S.
  3. Not sure if it keeps your phone on real time. I have always just gone in to my phone settings and manually changed the time.
  4. The app store. Or android equivalent.
  5. If I remember correctly, you have your phone in airplane mode and the app works off the ships wifi, but there is no charge. There is only a fee if you opt to use the internet.
  6. $35 for CO is cheaper than what they originally were offering it at. On our cruise on the Nieuw Statendam (the Premier sailing) it was $50. We did not take them up on it.
  7. We were on deck 5 on the Koningsdam and we could look down onto the deck 4 balconies - they do protrude a bit. It was a non issue for us - you still get a great view of the sea. The cabins you have picked are far forward which to us would be fine. Some people think that makes for a rougher ride in heavy seas. We have had cabins forward, midship, and aft, and never really feel it makes a difference.
  8. I didn't love the jumpsuit - I'm just not fond of the one shoulder look. Other than that it looked great on her. I did like what I saw of Carrie-Ann's dress. I am really surprised how good a dancer Kate Flannery is. And she's funny!
  9. The battery operated tea lights make great night-lights for the bathroom.
  10. My 3 kids in their 20's and early 30's love HAL. They have sailed HAL and Princess and all 3 prefer HAL.
  11. The showers are great on the Nieuw Statendam (and Koningsdam). Large, roomy. My DH is 6'6" and he has plenty of room.
  12. We sailed on the Nieuw Statendam in December and really liked her. We also like her sister the Koningsdam - we will be on her for the fourth time in October. We find the service to be very good and we have always enjoyed the food. Lots of choices and good quality. The cabins are well laid out and have good storage. The interactive TV's in the rooms are nice. The showers are the best of any ship we have sailed on. I would not hesitate to sail on the Nieuw Statendam again.
  13. We have to disagree on this one. We love the Tamarind and eat there several times per cruise. We like the Sel de Mer, and the Pinnacle, but for us the Tamarind wins out every time. I think a pop up on the ships that don't have a Tamarind would be a great idea.
  14. Non dress up nights seem to be a mixed bag. Slacks, jeans, skirts, dresses, capris, sometimes men in sport coats, women in dressier dresses. Shorts maybe around the ship, but I have never seen them in the MDR. I can't speak to what Oceania does - never sailed on them. I feel that if you want to get dressed up on a cruise you should feel free to do so. In a lot of our lives we really don't get the chance very often to get all "gussied up". So why not take advantage of the chance to get dressed up - especially when a cruise ship encourages "dress up" on their gala or formal nights. I think it better to be over dressed than under dressed. You may think differently.
  15. We liked the Step One performances on the Nieuw Statendam last December.
  16. Yes. And i think if people want to dress up on ANY night they should feel free to do so.
  17. ReneeFLL - I love your seashell dress. I think anyone should feel free to dress up on formal night if they wish to, and not have to worry about what other people think or say.
  18. We did a day tour from Rome to Pompeii and Sorrento with City Wonders. I would recommend them. We really enjoyed that tour with them, as well as several others we have done through them. They met us at Termini station and put us on the high speed train to Naples. At Naples we were met by our guide and got on board a comfortable coach. We went to Sorrento first and after a guided walk we had free time, and we had lunch at a really nice cliff-side restaurant recommended by the guide. We then headed to Pompeii and were met by another guide who specialized in Pompeii. At the end of the tour, the guide put us back on the train to Rome. It was a great day and I would not hesitate to book with City Wonders again.
  19. I also agree that a later flight would be better. We found the Rome airport to be very busy and chaotic. Long line to get through passport control. I would not feel comfortable with a flight that early.
  20. I would wonder what the seat recline is. Is it restricted because of the galley? Did you look on seatguru to see what people say about it?
  21. We bought a can of olive oil. A half litre so it wasn't too heavy to take home.
  22. Friends of ours had a front-facing OV cabin on the Sun Deck of Koningsdam, 11004. They really liked it. It was roomier inside than our balcony cabin.
  23. We had a similar balcony cabin on the Koningsdam - 5113 if you want to check it out on the deck plans. It was a great cabin, and the balcony is fully covered. The midship location is great too and very handy to the elevators. I think you will love your cabin. I am pretty sure you will really prefer the bathroom on this ship to Princess bathrooms! Have a great cruise.
