My husband needs a wheelchair to board.  We have one rented of the cruise. (On Symphony)

Where is the best place to be dropped off to get a wheelchair without a lot of walking ?

His balance is not good so he cannot stand in line a long time.  He will use a cane until we can get to

a wheelchair or other chair until boarding. We are diamond plus in a suite.  Is that pretty available as soon as enter the door ?  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I'd like to learn this as well. Symphony and Oasis both go out of Miami and I've never gone out of there.  I know at some other terminals, you can go straight to the wheelchair assistance area.  But I don't know where that is at the Miami terminal.

    No I never booked this.

I did the Vioctor Bodden tours  "Best of Roatan" Private Tour.

You can google it and see all that they have to offer. It was a lot cheaper, $80 for the two of us and we had a private vehicle just for us and could go wherever we wanted.

Thanks for the update. Can you tell me how the Bodden tour was and where you went?

All of the PC/Cocoa Beach car rental agencies will shuttle you from the port to their office, but most will close about 5-6:00, so you might need an Uber or Taxi after you drop off the car.  The drive is pretty easy - mostly highways.  We rented a car a few years ago for a PC stop and made it to Universal and back with out issues.  Your call! :classic_cool:

Can I ask, which car agency did you use?  We found the Avis shuttle to be over crowded and poorly serviced.  Of course it may be different if this is a port of call versus disembarking.

  4. This past April, I got off RCL and went to the Avis shuttle area.  It was beyond crazy.  They didn't have enough shuttles for all the people returning and using their service.  We saw shuttles come, fill up, and leave twice before getting on one.  No orderly fashion of waiting in turn.  It was like the hunger games.  Then only two people working the counter once you got there.

  5. I just did it two weeks ago. Got off via self-assist and went to the car rental shuttle area. Picked up a car from Avis and drove to SFO in about an hour. I had over an hour to spare. Avis shuttle sucked, first van came after 7:30a and by then 30-50 people were waiting for it. Other car providers had came and went twice by then.

  6. It's about a 75+ minute drive from PC to Sanford, compared to just under an hour to MCO.

for a 12:30 flight you need to be at Sanford by about 11:00, which translates into off the ship, with bags and clear of customs/immigration NLT about 9:30. Certainly doable if you book private transfers -- I do not think you have the time to mess around with renting a car one-way. If you carry your bags off and get out early (before 9:00 - preferably closer to 8:30) you could even use a shared shuttle as long as there are not long delays waiting for others.

    Good luck! :D

Thanks John. We're doing the same, but with a 1:15 flight. I'm thinking of doing the one-way car rental. Can I ask why you think that's too time consuming? The shuttle services for Sanford seem to be very few and pricey.

  7. That would be disastrous. There are already enough issues with cruise ships using the military dock, so the only other place to dock would be the main cruise dock. There is no terminal building, no place to park cars for people who drove in, and no means of organizing traffic. Plus, the airport does not serve many destinations, and it flies mostly smaller planes, so it would hard for people to fly in. It would only really be convenient for anyone who lives from Miami down through the Keys. Royal Caribbean, as well as any major line, does not operate cruises from Key West, but a smaller line, with smaller ships, may. Best of luck to you finding one though. :)

This is an interesting thread that makes you think about what is required to create a port terminal. Parking and airport have been mentioned. Think of how difficult it would be to get workers for getting the guests on board. Transportation to get all the food on board that is needed. Fuel for the ship. What else am I missing? Makes you appreciate a nice port for embarking.

  8. We stayed there two years ago and enjoyed it. Very clean, close to restaurants and stores. Breakfast can be crowded, we carried it back to our room. If you're flying in, be sure to call the right hotel for the shuttle. The shuttle drivers were kind enough to take us to 15th St Fisheries. We jumped on the Water Taxi after an early dinner. When we were done, I called them to pick us back up and the driver even stopped at a Walgreens for us. No charge, but we tipped him well. I'd go back with no hesitation.

  9. When we stayed there a couple of years ago, the airport shuttle driver dropped us off free of charge. We went to 15th St Fisheries first, got on the water taxi and did a round trip and when we were done called the hotel for the shuttle to pick us up. The shuttle driver even stopped at a Walgreens for us on the way back. There was no charge, but we tipped generously.
