  1. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0530-1700. She will be leaving on a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. Key West, Florida (08 Dec 0800-1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (10 Dec 0800-1700); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (11 Dec 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (13 Dec 0700-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (14 Dec a0700) Also in port are Adventure OTS at pier 29 from 0430-1730, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0400-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, Crown Princess at pier 21 from 0545-1600, and Sky Princess at pier 2 from 0500-1600. The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ and https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/. Also Koningsdam will be in ST. Maarten from 0800-1700. Next up: Nieuw Statendam on 8 December.
  2. My wife and I have not cruised on any of the HAL ships. We are about ready to book a holiday trip for this year. My question is...all things being equal with the exception of cabin selection, should we do an inside cabin on the Nieuw Statendam or a balcony on the Nieuw Amsterdam? The cost is roughly the same for the inside and balcony. The Nieuw Staendam is a relatively new ship, and the the Nieuw Amsterdam was recently refurbished in 2018. My thinking is since there is limited daylight hours to enjoy the balcony, perhaps the inside cabin on the newer ship is the way to go. But I would appreciate any thoughts and suggestions from folks who have cruised on either or both ships. Thanks so much! Mick
  3. We are traveling with a group on this ship January 2021. Our rooms are on the 8th level, the pool is one above us on the 9th. Does anyone know if there is noise from the pool, such as, dragging the pool chairs for setting up the day? Our travel agent swears we will hear nothing, but I still question it. Thank you.
  4. I was originally booked on a guaranteed inside stateroom but opted to upgrade when I received the email offer to move to an obstructed outside view. Since it was only $39/pp and I liked the idea of natural light to know what time of day it is when I wake up (😆), I went for it... Now that it's done, I can't help wondering if I sacrificed privacy. From what I understand, it's a full ceiling to floor window obstructed by a life boat... Does anyone know if crew members typically work on/in the life boats while cruising? Is privacy going to be concern at all if the curtains are open? Thanks in advance 🙂
  5. Hello All, New to Cruise Critic and looking for some advice. I booked a Holland America 12-day Adriatic Dream Cruise from Venice to Rome in August 2020 on Nieuw Amsterdam. Initially I booked 2 rooms, an SB (6064) for my husband and I and an SS (6066) for my mother and my 20 year old son. The plan was to have my son stay in whichever room he prefers, and give my mom some space, but my husband says there must be a less expensive way to accomplish these 2 goals. Any advise from seasoned cruisers who travel with their mother and their son and husband? How much room do you need to keep everyone happy? Can all 4 of us fit in a single SB that sleeps 4? I think that would be the least expensive, but perhaps wouldn't make for the most fun cruise for everyone. Any help, advice or experiential insights would be appreciated! Thank you! Lisa
  6. Does anyone have the daily papers from a 2019 Caribbean sailing on either Nieuw Amsterdam or Eurodam; either itinerary. Looking at eastern on NA but trying to get a sense of daily activity schedules. Thanks
  7. Hoping someone can assist here... Any scotch drinkers been on the Nieuw Amsterdam recently and know of what Single Malts they might have? I really do prefer single malts over blends, so hoping someone might have an idea for me! Thanks! Warren
  8. We just finished our first HAL cruise, a week on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Already looking to book our next. Because I work for a large university, we can only really travel from about 12/12/20 to 01/10/21. We travel with four of our youngest children(ages 7-17) and usually bring one or two extra with us, so cost is definitely a factor. We LOVED Half Moon Cay. We don't like the itinerary on the Nieuw Amsterdam the week we are looking at (alas, no HMC!); none of us have ever been to any of the ports that the Veendam will sail to that week (Trujillo Honduras, Costa Maya Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize). We prefer smaller, quieter, more intimate ships. We don't smoke though and really appreciated not having to walk through a smoky casino on the HAL-NA. Our children don't need any activities to be entertained. Veendam has some very bad reviews. That isn't always truth, so we're looking for feedback. We just had four interior cabins on the Verandah deck of the Veendam held. Not sure if that was a good plan or not; we have a day or two to decide...
  9. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at pier 21 (starboard to) from 0545-1700. She is headed out on a 7-day western Caribbean cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (01 Dec 0800-1600); Falmouth, Jamaica (03 Dec 0800-1700); George Town, Grand Cayman (04 Dec 0800-1600); Key West, Florida (06 Dec 0700-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (07 Dec a0700) Zuiderdam is headed to Freeport for a drydock. She will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0500-1600 but as we all know, ships leaving for drydock do not always leave as scheduled. Also in port are Caribbean Princess at pier 2 from 0530-1600, Carnival Sunrise at pier 4 from 0445-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, Independence OTS at pier 18 from 0615-1630, and Majesty OTS at pier 19 from 0515-1600. The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ and https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/. Nieuw Statendam will be in Key West from 0800-1700. https://www.keywestharborwebcam.com/ Next up: Eurodam and Nieuw Statendam will be among the eight ships in port on Sunday, 1 December.
  10. For a 7 day Caribbean itinerary how many production shows will there be in the theater, and how many headliner/variety type shows? I was recently on a 8 day Carnival cruise and a few nights they had nothing in theater. No fly in headliner or variety shows. 1 night was an audience participation game show that was lame. Only 1 show in 8 days had a live band with it. Not a fan of piped in music; just "professional karaoke". Looking for some new experiences; we are not late night partiers but would appreciate some good shows, music, and variety in entertainment say 5 out of 7 nights. Anyone have recent schedules for Caribbean 7 night sailings on NA or sister ships?
  11. My husband and I joined by life long friends sailed last week. We are 2 stars but have not sailed HAL in several years. We primarily look at itinerary and sail dates to choose our cruises. We got a good price on this cruise so the 4 of us jumped on the good deal. All of us have cruised different lines. We booked a guaranteed VH but were moved up to a VB. I was sad to see the decline in service throughout the ship. We never went into the main dining room as we were assigned 5:30 seating. We asked to be switched and were told we could not switch, so we ate in the Lido. Service was so so...and most of the time we did our own beverage refills and one night even moved our own plates to another table to have room for dessert. Our area was not busy, in fact there were only 4 tables occupied. The server stood and visited with another table the whole time. This was the only time I actually saw someone not working hard to keep up. Servers in all areas were friendly, cordial and were always on the go. The food was good..nothing spectacular but plenty of choices. We enjoyed relaxing and spending time together. The crepe station was nice. I especially liked the salad options. I ate a salad of some kind almost every meal. We ordered at the Dive In and really thought the burgers etc and fries were really good as well as the one time we got pizza. Our friends tried to order pizza right after we ordered and were told 30 minutes...they told them 60 minutes...too long to wait. We did order room service several times but found ourselves on hold 10-12 minutes...food arrived in the time frame we were told or specified. We made the choice not to pay extra for dining. Overall the ship seems dark and dreary...not dirty or dingy...just not bright and airy. I missed the beautiful fresh flowers HAL used to have throughout the ship...another cutback... We enjoyed the BBKings All Star Band. Their shows were great, high energy, with lots of fun dancing. Venue is too small as most nights it was packed. Would have liked to listen to pianos but once again not enough seats and we are too old to stand. I thought entertainment was lacking. We did our own excursions in port so I can not speak to that aspect of cruise. We most often found plenty of chairs on deck 12 forward to sun and read. Pools were always crowded. We chose not to purchase an Internet package as I feel this is just another way HAL is gouging passengers. Too costly...for reported spotty service.. Could not not believe we could not get a major college game onboard Saturday afternoon but on Sunday NFL game was offered on the same channel. Bar staff told us the channel was available. We liked the option to self dis-embark with our luggage. We got in line at 7:30 and were loading our luggage in our car at 8 am. We love cruising...and we did have a great time with friends...met some interesting people and would recommend HAL to anyone but as I stated disappointing to see all the changes. This is is my opinion...and someone else may disagree...but since I like to read all the reviews my fellow cruisers share I hope this might help someone else...
  12. Looking at obstructed ocean view cabin 4121 (Deck 4 Upper Promenade). Looks to be between two lifeboats and have cabins above and photo gallery below; but also appears slightly on the edge of a galley. Is there any view or is it totally blocked? Is this a quiet location or is there noise from galley below? I figure the photo gallery is pretty quiet, but kitchen operations not so sure. Eurodam is sister ship and should be very similar.
  13. Been many years since our last cruise. Will be booking a Caribbean cruise and will be first time using HAL. I've been reading numerous posts about the lack of things to do onboard. Is there a place where I could find a copy of one of the daily/weekly onboard activities/entertainment? Years ago I would copy and paste to this site our particular ships' activity daily paper for others to see what's going on. Our previous cruises have only been on Princess and it was always nice to have a daily scavenger hunt, or trivia games, etc. Any help would be appreciated!
  14. We arrived at Port Everglades yesterday at 10:30. No traffic, no waiting , in boarding group 1. Boarded at 11:30 Easy peasy SS verry nice. our first dinner was at Canneleto. Never again. We were first seated And 3 and a half hours later still there. No thanks We didn’t like the food either. In Key West now. Last night we missed all activities. But I have high hopes.
  15. We are in a Neptune in a few weeks on the Nieuw Amsterdam and I was wondering what to expect with getting Club Orange added on. It seems that being Neptunes we get most of the items anyway (we are familiar with the Neptune perks), but was wondering if we should be aware of anything extra? Also, we have Early Fixed dining, so will we be assigned a Club Orange area table or just the normal ones? Thanks

  20. Wondering about some family centric entertainment or activities on Nieuw Amsterdam. Do they show movies at night on the pool deck? If so, does anyone have a recent selection just to get an idea? Does Holland America have fly-in headliner/variety show acts in the theater ever? Do they have family arts and crafts, shows, etc? For those that have used the kids club, how did you like it? This pertains to a standard 7 day Caribbean cruise. Have the opportunity to book a trip aboard through a prize redemption program.
