  3. We’ve sailed many different cruise lines, including Fred’s ships several times - all four of the current fleet. They are old-fashioned in many respects and currently cater for an older, predominantly British clientele. But we loved every cruise we took with Fred, apart from one on Braemar, which coped badly with the rough seas we encountered that year. We found the crew to be extremely friendly. Three years ago we discovered Viking Ocean cruises and have found our perfect match in them. No formal nights on Viking! But if Covid means we must stay closer to home, and Fred has a more modern fleet with better priced balconies and suites, we would consider them again. In our 30 cruises we’ve only sailed once on HAL, in one of the Corner Neptune suites on Nieuw Amsterdam, and it was OK. Food was more ‘international’ than Fred’s offerings, but to be honest I can’t remember much else about the cruise! We’ve also sailed on Cunard, P&O, Royal Caribbean and NCL. Whilst we liked Fred Olsen, I do agree with the previous poster, that US cruisers who like any of the mid range mainstream lines might find a Fred Cruise ‘different’. If you don’t want razz matazz you might enjoy stepping back in time!
  4. From Wiki The Netherlands’ “ship of peace” was not to enjoy the praise lavished on her for long. After only seventeen voyages, Nieuw Amsterdam was laid up at Hoboken, New Jersey in 1939 after the German Invasion of Poland. She would be idle for only a year, however, and was requisitioned by the British Ministry of Transport after the Netherlands fell to Hitler's armies. She would spend the remainder of the war years as a transport for troops and prisoners of war, despite the fact she had been constructed without the consideration of ever being used in a military capacity. Nieuw Amsterdam, with a nominal troop capacity of 6,800 and speed of over 20 knots, was among the British-controlled "monsters" – high-capacity, high-speed troop ships capable of sailing unescorted due to their speed, and thus critical to the build up in Britain for the invasion of the Continent. During the course of the conflict she transported over 350,000 troops and steamed around 530,452 nautical miles before being returned to the Holland America Line in 1946. Directly after the war, she spent time repatriating Dutch citizens from the then-Dutch East Indies.
  5. You mention the 1937 Nieuw Amsterdam. I sailed NY to Southhampton and back again on the ship in 1968 or 1969 (memory is a bit faulty). I was a young teenager at the time and don't remember much, but I attribute those voyages to my lifelong love affair with ships and being on the open seas. I hope HAL finds a way to retain some of the attributes we all love.
  6. The "ship of state" was the nickname, along with "the darling of the Dutch," of the ss Nieuw Amsterdam of 1937 but yes, Rotterdam V was a classic lady, one of the last true ocean liners, Good thing is you can still visit her in the Waalhaven part of Rotterdam
  7. Yes, surprised me to, The Nieuw Amsterdam would be the most logical choice for a world cruise..
  8. No, I don't think so, Rijndam has always been part of the fleet. They will need to built (or buy) a new Rotterdam, always the flag ship and a new Amsterdam, unless they just stick with Nieuw Amsterdam which could become the new flagship and will do the world cruises..
  9. Has anyone cruised this ship and this cabin. It appears by it self. So it could be awesome or a closet that was converted to a cabin. Let me know please

  15. I sailed with Captain Mercer when he was the Master of the Nieuw Amsterdam. I came to respect him after attending the Q&A that was held in the Crow's Nest during my cruise. I am interested in learning, as the old radio commentator Paul Harvey said at the close of his broadcasts.."Now, you know the rest of the story" from Captain Mercer.

  17. If you can spare the time I still like what I did last time. HAL's 7-day cruises out of Vancouver (I think next year it's Volendam on Wednesday and Koningsdam on Saturday) which offer the option to disembark in Skagway after 3 days, continuing overland to Anchorage, and then continuing Southbound on either Noordam or Nieuw Amsterdam. You see a lot of the real Alaska and get time to decompress from the land trip on the ship on days when you can view glaciers at your leisure. Roy

  19. Long time HAL cruiser. Recently received an email from HAL about Private Fare sale for some Mexican and Caribbean cruises. The prices were amazing, like $499 for a Veranda. Emailed our cruise agent and signed up for cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam March 31, 2021. We were assigned cabin 4001. I should have checked before hand but our consultant said it was fine. Turns out it can be noisy. https://www.cruisecritic.com/nieuw-amsterdam-deck-plans/dp/deluxe-ocean-view-verandah-stateroom-vh/cc/?page=2 Consultant said we cannot change the cabin now, which is too bad I guess. Any hope we could if we call HAL directly? The deposit is non-refundable but is it transferable?

  22. Pat, I've already looked at alternatives for late January and not finding much that looks interesting. There's a Journeys out of Charleston (so we wouldn't have to fly) but the prices are absurd. I just don't understand why people are so eager to spend on these Journeys sailings. You can sail 10-14 day cruises on other lines for less (and usually nicer ships, better food, etc). But because it's Carnival, people pay. SMH. Anyway, I'm most disappointed because I used my Diamond upgrade for Breeze! Beginning to wonder it I'll ever use it. I'm sure the price to upgrade from IS to OV on one of our Legend sailings will be much more expensive, just to then move up to a BL. I may end up on the 1/30 HAL Nieuw Amsterdam and use my FCC and OBC on that. But that means not sailing with you for your b'day. 🙁 I could always NOT sail and save the money for Australia!

  24. Another update: Pacific Dawn, Ovation of the Seas, Noordam, and Nieuw Amsterdam are leaving for Singapore. Pacific Explorer is leaving for Hong Kong. Royal Princess and Diamond Princess are joining the ships mentioned yesterday leaving for Port Klang, Malaysia. Port Klang doesn't have that much space, so I guess they'll probably anchor off shore out there, and there's no hurry for ships to rush back towards their homeports, so...I guess we'll see.
