  1. Haven’t been in HAL in many years and I’m looking to try again and would appreciate any feedback. Our one and only HAL cruise was 9 years ago on the Maasdam. 14 days with the most amazing Caribbean itinerary. But we were bored on the ship. Best entertainment was the crew show. We really enjoyed that. Rest of the entertainment was a xylophone player and a violinist. Not our cup of tea. We've mostly sailed Princess, but it seems that with the new ships, the ship is the destination, Not the itinerary. Don’t get me wrong, the ship is very important, as is the itinerary. Quite fr
  2. Hello All, I'm back again for advice for those of you that know the Nieuw Statendam. I am currently booked in a Spa OV on a February trip to the Caribbean. I just noticed that the Save on Sunshine package for the month of October adds the SBP (although a non-refundable fare). The Spa OV cabins are sold out. Can you recommend OV cabins that you like? I would be most interested in not having a cabin above or below busy public spaces. Thank you, BaltimoreCruise
  3. NIEUW STATENDAM,the newest ship of Holland America ,makes her maiden arrival at Piraeus Port
  4. I am wondering if afternoon tea is still offered on HAL specifically the NS. I know the royal Dutch tea hasn't been offered in quite some time but my last experience on the Koningsdam, it was at 3 each sea day.
  5. What times are the early and late seatings in the main dining room on the Nieuw Statendam? Thanks
  6. For our next cruise, I am looking at midship balconies on the Nieuw Statendam. I have found that my motion sickness is mitigated by having the foot of the bed nearest to the ship's bow so that when I sit up in bed I am facing forward. Is there any way to determine the bed placement in specific staterooms?
  7. What are the current night-time activities on the main stage? Any news of things changing before the holidays? thanks!
  8. We are boarding her next week and my husband wants to know where mass is held. I am sure it is in the daily newsletter but he wants to be prepared. Thanks for any information you can pass on to us.
  9. Hi. is there music playing on the lido deck either a band or DJ ?
  10. We were on the Rotterdam in April and there was containers of lemonade available all day long that you could help yourself to. Can anyone confirm if that's the case on the Nieuw Statendam or if lemonade is only available during set meal times?
  11. Hi, does anyone know if the tables are the same in the dining room as Koningsdam? I really want to make sure we have a window this time. We didn't have one in Norway and it was really disappointing! I looked on halfacts, they only had Koningsdam. Thanks for any info.
  12. Where does the New Statendam dock in Key West?
  13. I've read some posts on Cruise Critic asking about vegan and vegetarian options on cruise ships. I've sailed on several cruises following a vegan diet, and aside from an entirely vegan cruise, HAL has a fabulous vegan menu! There are also so many vegan options all over the ship, whether it's naturally plant-based or you just need to remove a couple of ingredients here or there. I've written all about everything that I ate for my 7 days on Nieuw Statendam at my blog here: https://justinpluslauren.com/holland-america-vegan-guide/ I'll post the images of the vegan/vegeta
  14. Previously traveled on Celebrity where we could take large cup to bars and get free fountain soda to drink in stateroom. Does HAL offer the same service?
  15. Hi everyone. Have booked Nieuw Statendam for December 2020 in Cabin 8193 Part of the reason for the location is both my wife and I really enjoy the more aft cabins. We love the motion of the ship and we never sleep so well as when we are being rocked to sleep 🙂 I'm just curious to hear any comments for those who might have sailed in the cabin and possible pictures. Cheers! Warren and Yvonne
  16. Are the movies shown on the big poolside screen also available on your stateroom TV?
  17. Does the Lido on the Nieuw Statendam have an al fresco dining area?
  18. Hi everyone, I've just booked the Nieuw Statendam for next February. It will be my first experience with HAL and I'm really looking forward to it! We've booked Cabin 8080 and I understand that the balcony is slightly bigger and angled because of the location. My question, for anyone who has been on it, is whether the balcony is entirely exposed or is there a combination of shade and sunshine? I usually book cabins on Caribe deck with Princess and those balconies provide both and are larger so I just wondered. Thanks in advance!
  19. I have heard so much about the artwork throughout the Statendam. Is there some sort of self-guided tour available?
  20. Hereby my review of our 8-day cruise to Norway with Holland America's Nieuw Statendam. With lots of help from Cruise Critic members and by reading lots of post we decided a few months ago to go for a cruise to Norway, the 8 days (7 nights) Vikings Saga. Because it was our first cruise we decided to start and end in Amsterdam (capital of our home country) and just for a week to see cruising was something for us. If you have any question after reading this review please let me know! I have posted a selection of photos but if you want to see something, you’re missing please let me know. I also
  21. Just called Holland America to take advantage of an upgrade special for an obstructed veranda and was assigned a handicapped obstructed veranda. When I saw the cabin on the deck plan, I explained I didn't need a handicap room and feared I was keeping it from someone who really needed one. The agent told me for that very reason they usually don't assign these cabins to non-handicapped passengers until it is within 30 days of the cruise, which it is. The cabin, 4096 on Nieuw Statendam, is naturally larger and also looks to have a larger balcony than other veranda cabins and I fee
  22. Does anyone have any photos or information about the inside accessible cabins on Nieuw statendam (or Koningsdam since they are the same class of ship) many thanks
  23. Any suggestions? Will be on a 7 night cruise. It's possible our 1 year old will be with us although I may be able to get babysitting from other family members on one or two nights when we try specialty dining. I've never sailed with HAL before. I watched some videos online and think I want to try the Asian place (Tamarind) and Pinnacle Grill. Not sure about the Italian place as I see it gets mixed reviews. Will we get dirty looks if we bring our kid with us? Any other complimentary food items specific to HAL that I should make sure I try/don't miss out on? The b
  24. Just wondering if anyone has stayed in this cabin or one like it. It has the angled balcony which looks like it might be slightly larger than some and the cabin looks a little bit longer. Trying to decide between this and one in the same V category with the obviously larger balcony. Not sure if there's much difference in cabin size, and if not, would rather have the larger balcony on the other one. Thanks!
  25. We had a wonderful Northern Isles Cruise on the Nieuw Statendam!!! Pre-cruise - We flew United from Pittsburgh to DC and then DC to Amsterdam. We purchased our airfare through HAL and saved almost 50% to what we found on line. Other than a long layover in DC, which we spent in a United lounge, the flights weren’t bad and we arrived in Amsterdam on Friday morning for a Sunday cruise. We stayed at the Kimpton, which we would highly recommend. It is a short (5 minute) walk from the Centraal station (took the train from the airport) and has nightly free wine happy hours.
