  1. We are experienced HAL cruisers and have been on the Nieuw Statendam before - just 6 months ago - also in a Vista Suite but I never took note of storage because we were only on an 8 day sail and the storage was manageable. We just booked on a 28 day on her for next year and have some concerns about the cabin we selected. After selecting 5131 because of it's mid-ship location, I saw that it is has a pull out sofa (they almost all have this) and a drop down bed. We have no use for either BUT I am concerned about the potential loss of the space above the sofa that will now have a pull down bed. Also, can't remember if this cabin had drawers under the sofa or am I confusing it with a Norwegian ship I also sailed on a few months ago -- aging brain, I think. Has anyone had experience with this and, is the space with the drop down bed usable at all for storage when the bed it folded up? I'm creative with the Command hooks, shoe bags, magnets and all the rest, but I cannot stand the clutter of a cabin that eventually looks like a storage closet and I'm not willing to spend up 10K for a Signature Suite. Any first hand knowledge appreciated while I still have time to maybe change cabins. Thanks!!
  2. It’s official, the happy hour special is only 25% off the second drink! The worst special by far of any.
  3. We have 3 BHBs in Port Everglades on Saturday! ms Rotterdam will be at pier 19 from 5:00 am to 3:00 pm, and she is sailing on an 11 day Southern Caribbean Wayfarer. ms Nieuw Statendam will be at pier 26 from 5:30 am to 4:00 pm, and she is sailing on a 7 day Western Caribbean, and ms Volendam will be at pier 21 from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm, and she is sailing on a 14 day Southern Caribbean Wayfarer Also in port is Sky Princess at pier 2 (4:45 am – 4:00 pm), Celebrity Equinox at pier 18 (5:45 am – 4:00 pm), and Celebrity Apex at pier 25 (6:15 am – 3:30 pm). 6 ships in port, and 4 ships leaving at 4:00 pm. It will be a busy sailaway! The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/. Next up: Nieuw Amsterdam on Sunday, March 19, 2023.
  4. A few initial observances: The ship was full. This was my first cruise in forever where we were at capacity and I didn't really feel it. The only issue was finding a deck chair sometimes. I was impressed with my fellow passenger complement. Kids were well behaved. Gala night everyone looked nice. Far from formal, but everyone was presentable [side note - in 2011 when it was still "formal" night - we had someone in the main dining room in jeans and a F&%# You T-shirt and others in street clothes]. My last two cruises people looked very nice. Drink package - very few bar staff were sticklers to the one drink at a time. If 3 of us were together - they took one drink card. If you asked for a drink and to take a soda back to the room, no problem. Getting drinks took FOREVER. It wasn't just if the bar was busy. Since SO many people had the package - maybe this was their was to slow down people from over drinking. But even if there wasn't anyone at a bar, just to get a can of soda could take 2 minutes. Their computer system seemed really slow (perhaps leading to my above point of one receipt for 3 drinks instead of running 3 transactions). Dining Room - this was the first cruise in several that I ate in the MDR - twice. The food was spot on. Service was quick (no 2 hour dinners). Food - overall good. Nothing was mind blowing, but it was all yummy. We had cabins 1104 (inside) and 1106 (outside). These were pretty much under BB King. We could definitely hear the drum beat at night. You couldn't hear music or singing. Just the pulse of the rhythm. They ended by 11pm usually. It was not enough to keep us from sleeping.\ Crew was fabulous as always. It never will cease to amaze me how they are able to learn our names so quickly. Week after week new people and by day 2 they know who we are. That's just fantastic. If I think of other things - I'll add to this thread.
  5. This is our second time on this ship (first time was in 2019). We cruise a lot and tend to chase specific new ships rather than specific brands although we do like Princess the best currently with their medallions and ability to summon food and drinks to wherever you are. In any case, we had won a free cruise playing bingo the last time we sailed Holland America, so here we are. We did upgrade the room to Club Orange in a veranda since the Bingo free cruise is the cheapest inside state room category. I just wanted to give a quick good/bad of our experience so far in case others can benefit. Let me know if you have specific questions and I’ll try to answer them. Good: - room is fairly nice and balcony is a good size. Room overall is on the small size, but adequate. The shower is larger than most with a sliding glass door and the best water pressure I have had on a cruise ship. - food quality has been good in both the buffet and club orange dining rooms - wine selection is good in the dining room with Silverado Napa Cab being their best cab by the glass. Plenty of nicer wines by the bottle. I am on the quench non-alcoholic package as I want flexibility with the wine I drink rather than be locked into a by the glass list. -PRO Tip: I’d say I regret getting the quench package and should have just gotten the soda fountain package. The greater non-alcoholic options are not worth the price difference especially given the crowded bars. Save your money for extra wine and save time by filling your own Coke Zero at the machine. They have a daily happy hour at Billboard on deck 2 that is 25% off all drinks if you want to try something interesting. Bad: - the most kids I have seen on Holland America -ship feels very crowded with long waits for drinks at most bars and the drinks feel like they are rushed when they finally are made. We had a 30 minute wait for dinner last night at the private club orange dining room at 630pm, which boasts about no waits. The food was good in the end and breakfast in club orange this morning was not a problem and it comes with complimentary mimosas (no drink package required) -ship is small compared to many (100,000 tons compared to newer ships being in the 150k - 170k tons and the Oasis class ships tipping the scales at nearly 250,000 tons). This translates into a ship where you can get around quickly, but there are limited areas to explore and everything feels squeezed in from furniture to events. Last night they asked us to wait in the nearby lounge which was getting ready to host a PRIDE event. Not our cup of tea, but regardless, was very busy with zero seating available. -staff seems friendly, but overworked as is the trend on most ships. Our servers in the dining rooms have been extremely good while bar service has been more hit and miss. Summary ill post some more if I have additional comments as the cruise continues, but we likely will not sail Holland America again. I think we mostly felt that way after the first time in 2019, but we had a free cruise to use 🙂. I will say that jn 2019 one of the major perks for me was no kids which offset some of these other comments, but that isn’t the current situation.
  6. I cannot remember, do the beds on the Neptune suites on the Nieuw Statendam and the Oosterdam have those big drawers under the bed? I think they did on the Westerdam, but I am not positive. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks
  7. Have a cruise coming up on the NS and booked into a Spa Balcony. It looks on the deck plans that the balcony is not as deep as say a balcony on deck 8. Does anyone have any information about this? Appreciate any insight you may have.
  8. ms Nieuw Statendam will be at pier 26 from 5:30 am to 4:00 pm, and she is leaving on a 7 night Tropical Caribbean sailing Also in port is Sky Princess at pier 2 (4:45 am – 5:00 pm), Odyssey of the Seas at pier 18 (5:15 am – 5:00 pm), and Celebrity Apex at pier 25 (6:00 am – 3:30 pm) The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/. 9. This was my 3rd cruise. First two were 2001 and 2006. Both HAL. After reading nightmares here, I was scared. From bad food, small portions, cabana boom boxes/cancels, the list went on. I finally ignored them. Here is a breif summary. 1) Boarding: 9/10. I could have had someone drive me to the room in a golf cart to get a 10/10. 2) Room: Neptune suite. Ambulatory ADA 7085. Carpet was dirty, awesome veranda, great bed and pillows. 9/10. 3) Room stewards. I guess 10/10, but really, we did not require anything from them. 4) Neptune lounge: 9/10, would have liked better food. Wish that they had Tazo teas like in the crows nest. 5) Room service. Breakfast 9/10. Midnight snacks arg..... 3/10 6) Lido market,, its a buffet, I asked for fresh stuff mostly so that it was hot, Food was not as hot as I liked but still 8/10. If you are alone, lean your chair against table if you have to leave otherwise, they will clean your table and someone else will get it, 7) Club orange. 9/10, we had some really odd tasting salad one night. LMAO. Portions were perfect. I had to skip lunch to eat an entire dinner. Wife has picky taste and Gi issues. If she did not like something she ordered they brought her something else. Amazingly accommodating. She had 3 birthday cakes one for each meal. They redid one because it was not decorated to the satisfaction of our waitress Kaileah (sp?) 8- Pinnacle grill 10/10, steak and burger were perfect, but total overload as far as fat content. 9) Rudi's: Amazing. 10/10. Nico was awesome waiter.. 10) Rock and Roll room. 10/10. We were lucky great band. Don't think they are staying on ship or as a band. 11) BB Kings Day 1: 10/10. Days 2-7: 4/10. They lost vocalist and keyboard on 2nd day and struggled. Trumpet and Guitar were really great. Good drummer, but tough for them. 12) Ocean bar... our favorite. 10/10 great everything, poured and mixed well. Great cosmos and great smoked old fashions. Also liked the Rotterdam Martinez. 13) Promenade deck: 9/10 just because I have been on Zuiderdam. Thank you for giving me a place to walk 5-8 miles per day. We were mid ship, so i usually went down to promenade, then outside to walk bow or stern (pool and spa lido deck) and then back via promenade. The promenade is especially awesome in heavy seas. We had some rough nights and captain Eric was doing 16-20NM, so the front of the promenade was amazing and being an insomniac it was humbling to be down there at 2-3AM. 14) Cabana: 8/10 Great service. Could have better view. Peaceful and quiet. I cannot imagine anyone rating HAL or this ship low. i cannot imagine a better way to have spent my wifes 60th bday. My wife and I are so happy we spent a mega ton of money for her 60th. HAL treated us very well.
  10. I'm finding conflicting information online. Can any recent cruisers tell me which terminal the Nieuw Statendam docks at. Thank you
  11. From what I have heard, this ship does not have deck chairs on the promenade deck. Can somebody verify this, and if so, where are they ? I love to cuddle up with a couple blankets in them and watch the world float by.
  12. We haven’t received our stateroom number yet for the above cruise and also the following one (March 25). Anyone else still waiting and has anyone received their room recently?
  13. ms Eurodam will be making an early post-drydock arrival, and there's 3 BHB's in port for sail away on Saturday! 14. My understanding is that the 3 Pinnacle class ships, including Nieuw Statendam, have the Dutch Cafe. However, I looked up a few future cruises for Nieuw Statendam in the fall, and when I review the dining options, everything except for Dutch Cafe is listed as a dining choice. Are there some cruises on which the Dutch Cafe is inoperative on this ship (or the other 2 Pinnacle class ships)? Or is it just a website/software error, i.e., Dutch Cafe is present and operative (absent unusual circumstances) on all N. Stat sailings? Thanks in advance (I am relatively new to HAL, but recently did a Rotterdam cruise and loved it -- including the Dutch Cafe -- so much that my future cruise searches are focussed on ships that have it).
  15. Captain has announced the tragic death on shore of a member of the entertainment team while docked yesterday in Curaçao. No details were offered. No news reports that we can find online.
  16. When posted activities do not interest us, my friend(s) and I like to play cards. Where is a good place on the Nieuw Statendam to play? Is there a dedicated card/game room?
  17. ms Rotterdam will be at pier 19 from 4:30 am to 4:00 pm, and she is leaving on an 11 day Southern Caribbean Wayfarer. ms Nieuw Statendam will be at pier 26 from 5:30 am to 3:45 pm, and she is sailing on a 7 day Southern Caribbean Sunfarer. Also in port is Sky Princess at pier 2, (4:45 am to 3:30 pm) Odyssey of the Seas at pier 18 (5:15 pm to 5:00 pm), and Celebrity Apex at pier 25 (6:00 am – 3:30 pm) The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/. 18. For anyone that has been on the Nieuw Statendam - DH is interested in what is available in the evening to do after dinner, we looked on the HAL website, and we have cruised on the Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. Any ideas of something different based on your experiences? What I have come up with so far: --Movie on the Lido --Show in Theater --BB King (but so loud!) --Rolling Stones --Casino --Stroll along the promenade --Lounges with bars We enjoy each others company enough to find some fun things to do together! (Sounds odd, doesn't it? 😅) Of course, we love meeting new people! We are booking the Thermal Suite! I had hoped some of you have new and different experiences! And since at least 5 ships will be in St. Thomas, we are hanging on the ship this time - - - - Thanks everyone! Mimi, VA
  19. Currently on NS for the next 13 days, having left Port Everglades yesterday. The ship is comfortable and well appointed, but the changes in HAL from our last voyage about 12 years ago are very evident. Our first question is: Could we have booked dinner in the MDR before the cruise? It didn’t come up when we booked the other restaurants. We were under the impression that the MDR was always first come, first serves. Dinner last night was a total cluster, with dozens of people waiting around 6:30pm, and the restaurant manager resorting to an old fashioned clipboard to keep track of his pagers. We were quoted a minimum 45 minute wait, so we ditched out to Rudi’s which was empty, and walked in to a wonderful dinner. Other guests reported that the upper level was not open. We eventually found the x88 note in Navigator to book the MDR. Of course, for our first week onboard, there are no times available in the six o’clock hour. Do savvy HAL guests immediately book the MDR upon boarding? Or are high level elites permitted to book before the cruise? Today’s excursion to the beach at Half Moon was also disappointing. We booked a clamshell, but when we arrived, we found no control at all on who was using them. We did eventually find one, but thought that those who paid to reserve one would get first pick. Tendering took an hour from being in line on the ship to disembarking at the Cay. We’ve noticed used glasses, cups, and dishes left on tables in the bars and eating areas for half an hour or more. We suppose the ship is understaffed. We are hopeful that the guest experience will stabilize in the next few days. We had outstanding cruises on Masdam and Zanndam some years ago.
  20. Well, back to life after a cruise! ms Eurodam will be at pier 19 from 5:30 am to 12:00 pm, and she will be going into drydock from February 18 – March 4, 2023. (Thanks for the info, @VMax1700!) ms Nieuw Statendam will be at pier 26 from 5:45 am to 4:00 pm, and she is sailing on a 7 day Western Caribbean. Also in port is Sky Princess at pier 2 (4:15 am – 3:30 pm), Celebrity Equinox at pier 29 (4:30 am – 4:00 pm), Harmony of the Seas at pier 18 (5:00 am – 4:30 pm), and Celebrity Apex at pier 25 (6:15 am – 3:30 pm). The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/. Next up: Nieuw Amsterdam on Sunday, February 19, 2023. Leanne
  21. Based on responses, I understand that some cruisers have had success in using the Dyson Air Wrap on board Disney, RCCL and Princess Cruise Line while others have not. Has anyone used the Dyson Air Wrap onboard Holland America ships, specifically the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam. Thank you in advance for your response!
  22. Going ashore in Martinique today, so the sailaway is a bit early! The ms Nieuw Statendam will be at pier 26 from 5:30 am to 3:30 pm. She is leaving on a 7 day Tropical Caribbean. Also in port is Sky Princess at pier 2 (4:45 am – 3:30 pm), Odyssey of the Seas at pier 18 (5:15 am to 5:00 pm), and Celebrity Apex at pier 25 (6:00 am-3:30 pm). 3 ships singling up for 3:30 departure...who will lead the parade? The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ Next up: Nieuw Amsterdam on Sunday, February 12, 2023. Leanne
  23. For those Pickleballers who are/were on the Nieuw Statendam -- is there a dedicated Pickleball court or is it shared with basketball, etc.?
  24. There were issues with the sea view pool yesterday when we disembarked. It started on Friday, when they roped off some of the deck. As we waited to leave the ship we saw a big crane & wondered if it had to do with the pool issue. Maybe, it was just regular maintenance, but we were curious LOL. Hope that pool is available for you on the ship now!!
