  1. We are considering an aft-wrap Neptune on the Nieuw Statendam (I think the Koningsdam is the same) and am wondering which deck to select from? I and familiar with the aft-wraps on the VIsta class ships, but not on this new class. Which cabins are are largest, inside and balcony, and any other pros/cons.

  4. That was my impression on Embarkation Day on the Nieuw Statendam. I did expect such a reaction, however. I quickly got used to the size and the layout. Beautiful? A bland decor in the Theater, a MDR with Yellow/White decor that got "old" quickly for me, and unlabeled art in which I found some interesting and some simply weird, The Promenade Deck is a disappointment. I was seriously un-dazzled by the Theater. The performances that I attended in such a hyped, high tech Theater were most underwhelming and certainly failed to use the 270 degree screen to its best use. My reviews on CC and to HAL that I wrote were most negative. I expected Wow! What I experienced: what was all the hype about? Prinsendam's PG had "character" that the the S and R Class ships lack/lacked. The PG's on the other ships that have tables arranged in "rings" are fine--if--if--one gets a table that is not on the outer most ring. Azamara will never find me aboard one of their current ships. They are the former ships of Renaissance Cruises. Friends who have more cruising experience than me sailed on them when they were Renaissance vessels. The physical layout and the noise due to the low ceiling of the MDR were important items that they disliked. The Azamara deck plans that I have seen do not show much alterations as to how the ships were originally built. cruisinbanjo, I know exactly how you feel. I have felt the same regarding my abandoning two organizations of which I have been a member for many years. I affiliated with one of those organizations in 1964.
  5. We were on starboard side of the 4th deck on Nieuw Statendam. We loved the huge balcony, but even though we were all the way down to deck 4 we still had a lot of smoke. If you pick deck seven, I would make sure it is on the port side.

  8. Most likely Eurodam. The fall 2021 to spring 2022 Caribbean itineraries (including the partial canal transits) has yet to be published, but I predict Rotterdam VII and Nieuw Amsterdam will do the 7nt E/W Caribbean, Nieuw Statendam will do the 10/11nt Southern Caribbean, and Eurodam on the 10/11nt partial canal sailings using the historic locks.
  9. One year ago we disembarked the Nieuw Statendam, spent the night in Civitavecchia, and boarded the Koningsdam the next day. Here are some photos of that day -- boarding the hotel shuttle, one of the kitties at the hotel, and beautiful flowers on the grounds.
  10. Yes there are typically 6, or more often 7. 2 for the North/South runs Between Vancouver and Seward (now Whittier), 2 Round-trip from Vancouver, 2 Round-trip Seattle and often one doing a 14 day either Round-trip Seattle or Vancouver (will not be back for 2021 and 2022 doubtful as well). I predict Summer 2022 will see 6 ships in Alaska, 4 ships in Europe and 1 ship on CA/NE & VOV. Europe will most likely be Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam VII, Westerdam and Volendam with CA/NE & VOV remaining on Zaandam. There is a chance they could change the schedules of either Eurodam or Nieuw Amsterdam and send one of them to Europe 2022 instead. They both currently have April 2022 Panama Canals that go from FLL all the way to Vancouver (N.A.) or Seattle (E). Time will tell!

  13. Where is the Nieuw Statendam? I usually show the ship, but today, it is just scenes from the port area. Hints: It is a port mentioned previously on this thread. You can take a ships tour to these sights or a public bus. The ship docks rather than rendering here.
  14. I avoided booking the 10/9/21 10 night sailing of the Nieuw Statendam for a very similar reason as it is the Mark Steyn Cruise (Conservative Political Commentator). Politics aside, we did not want to be on a vessel where many public areas might be used for exclusive use of the group (fixed seating dining, lectures, musical performances, cocktail parties, etc). This is a disruption to my vacation that I am not willing to accept. Instead we booked the 10/29/21 9 night sailing and took the loss of one port as an acceptable trade-off. We already had the 10/29/21 sailing booked so in either case we are on a b2b, which is what we wanted.
  15. Roy: I enjoyed watching the Nieuw Statendam arriving. I was on her twice in her maiden year. Once as a passenger and once as a Chaplain. I preferred being a passenger on this one.
  16. today is International Skeptics Day, Good Samaritan Day, and International Face Your Fears Day The man who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd. 17. We had rough seas a year ago and weren't able to get to Livorno -- so we used it as a packing day because in a couple days we would be leaving the Nieuw Statendam after 39 days and boarding the Koningsdam in Civitavecchia. Here's a photo of the wake from our cabin (LOVE aft views), our most fabulous cabin stewards Arye and Agus (best in over 25 cruises, I cried when we said goodbye) and the towel animal they did for us that night. I laughed so hard and still laugh when I see this. 🙂
  18. Good morning all! Great collection of days. Thanks for the reminder, I'm a couple months overdue for my mammogram -- have been putting it off because of Covid (as we ladies know, the tech has to get right up in our faces) but I do know they do it safely and I'm going to get that appointment made. Not a fan of black bean soup, and like Joy, I'm a white wine gal so will pass on the wine again... A very welcome dry day here, yay!! Out to the garden. I see that my rose bushes are still getting buds, crazy roses! Here's a photo of the wake from our cabin on the Nieuw Statendam a year ago. We were somewhere near Florence.
  19. Good Morning. Yes please to the Long Island Ice tea, especially on a warm summer's day. Here is a link to the Nieuw Statendam in Southhampton. Val https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9oawm2_4DM
  20. Here is the latest update of the Dry Docks, Charters and Groups Onboard file. The charters and group sailings organisations have been slowly updating their plans, so the information listed here may change over the coming months. The information on the HAL website is sometimes contradictory to the information posted by charter organisations (i.e. some dates which are shown as charters on the organiser's website is still available to book on the HAL website). Also, some Charters/Groups have posted their schedules, however HAL have not posted theirs (eg Nieuw Amsterdam, Caribbean Winter 2021 sailings). As usual,if you have information about groups charters or dry docks then please post here and I will update in the next file. New information since last month is shown in RED. Group bookings which appear to have changed since last month are shown in GREY. 22. Perhaps the difference had to do with the Club HAL staff on that cruise. Anyone that has cruised on a HAL ship for a number of years knows that the quality and the personality of the crew with whom they interact--as well as those with whom they may not interact, i.e. the Hotel Director, the Executive Chef, the CD, the Maitre d', the ship' Master, and others--can have an important influence on one's on-board experience as well as the memories that are taken with them upon disembarkation. Inspecting the Club HAL facilities and reviewed the Club's "When and Where"on Nieuw Statendam, as one who has worked with youth, I saw nothing with the facilities or the programming to quibble. It is the job of a quality staff to fulfill the "promise" that, I think, exists for Club HAL.
  23. Last year was Thanksgiving dinner on the Nieuw Statendam, after a full touring day in Aix-En-Provence Cassis and Marseilles, which we booked through ItalyTours. I never figured that out, but it was a good day!
  24. Pic of the Scheveningen (The Netherlands) anchorage with Nieuw Statendam still in place. She has since departed for Southampton, England. Scheveningen is both a district as well as subdistrict of Holland's third (just for Sir PMP 😉 ) city, The Hague/Den Haag
