  1. Good afternoon MoneyGuy. My review of the American Queen is still less than a year old. We had a great time, here is the link... https://solentrichardscruiseblog.com/2018/01/24/american-queen-mississippi-christmas-cruise/
  2. My wife and I did this itinerary this time last year though in the opposite direction but with the same stops. You may find my 'comprehensive' review of interest, especially the itinerary section mid way through. https://solentrichardscruiseblog.com/2018/01/24/american-queen-mississippi-christmas-cruise/ The only item I cannot comment on is the Vegan food being a carnivore by nature. Hope that helps: we had a FAB time.
  3. Agree with you. Enjoyed sitting on deck in swing or rocking chair while cruising at a maximum speed of 8 knots and listening to the sound of the paddle wheel. Visiting interior US cities was most interesting. We have sailed on Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen, American Queen and Columbia Queen. However the Delta Steamboat Company went bankrupt. Majestic bought their boats and also has gone bankrupt. Delta Queen is now a river hotel which no longer sails. American Queen is owned by US government and Mississippi Queen last I heard was being sold to be torn apart to become a barge. Columbia Queen's status unknown to me. You may try River Cruising thread, Google, Yahoo or Wikipedia for more info. A new line is currently building a boat to cruise the inner rivers of the US and will be ready next year if I remember correctly.
  4. The quality of cruise offered by Majestic America Line (MAL) was below par to say the least. The high prices asked by them were rdiculous for the poor experience offered. I stopped riding the DELTA QUEEN, MISSISSIPPI QUEEN, and AMERICAN QUEEN soon after MAL took over. Never the less I still rode the three steamboats for a total of over 105 trips before MAL. While I was riding the experience then was fantastic. The food, entertainment and service were always first rate, but then came MAL. Now, one of the principals that managed the old Delta Queen Steamboat Co. is back in charge. Jeffery Krida is once again president of the new company. Many of the old itineraries, theme cruises and former crew are returning. No one can say how the new experience will be until the steamboat returns to service, but the description of what will be offered certainly looks attractive. The potential is certainly there for a premier cruise experience. I have two trips booked later this year on the AMERICAN QUEEN. I am anxiously awaiting the first reviews, and I pray that the new company can live up to the old and that the quality will be there.
  5. At one time I had a complete list but lost it in a fit of "clean." After this thread I tried to redo the list -- at least the ones I can remember. 6. MikeMac, We did the Empress of the North when she still belonged to American West Steamboat Company back in 2005. We did the Columbia River on the Columbia Queen a week prior to the Empress of the North. Both trips were just great!! Unfortunately Majestic America Line did hand over the Empress of the North to the Maritime Administration. According to them there was no one interested in buying the vessel which has a high dept on it. I know there are some potential buyers for the former Delta Queen Steamboat Company boats (American Queen, Mississippi Queen and of course Delta Queen). But so far nothing is signed. Latest we hear is that the American Queen has been also returned to the Maritime Administration (for the same reasons). All other boats are fully owned by Majestic America Line (which also includes the small ship Contessa). We are still fighting to get an expemption for the Delta Queen (see my signature). And we haven´t given up yet. We truly hope that at least the three steamboats will be aquired by a group of people who know how to run these boats!! steamboats
  7. Gave wife an adult wish after doctor's clearance to travel following surgery and chemo for rare form of cancer. Told her that ill childern get a "child's wish" when they are severely ill so I was giving her an "adult wish" following her cancer surgery and chemo treatments. She choose to take a cruise on the Delta Queen (Delta Queen Steamboat Company). We took the seven day cruise on the Illonios River from Chicago (Ottawa), IL to Saint Louis, MO. She never wore wigs and she made the cruise totally bald. We both enjoyed the cruise and it lifted her spirits tremenously. We were amazed about the number on the cruise who approached us telling us that they to were cancer survivors. This was right after 9/11 and she was afraid to fly. Well we get in line at the airport and who does she see boarding our aircraft. Our local Catholic Archbishop was boarding our airplane. From than on she felt relaxed as the good Lord has given her the cruise of her life and he additionally sent a personal messenger (the Archbishop) to safely guide and take her on to her cruise. Have now cruised 10 times with number 11 planned for April 05 on a HAL transalantic cruise to Italy where we will tour for a month. Sailed on Delta Queen Steam Boat Company's: Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and American Queen; Carnival, Holland America; Royal Caribbean and NCL.

  10. Mobility scooters cannot be used on European river cruises because of the problem of disembarking and most do not have elevators to get to the various venues onboard. Scooters are usable on the American Queen Mississippi River cruises. They have elevators and ramps to disembark. We were very pleased with the ability to use their included excursion Hop on Hop off buses also. They have 2 that have lifts.
  11. It was being built for American Classic Voyages/United States Lines for service in the Hawaiian Islands. It was being built in Mississippi. It was to be an American Flagged ship.....first ocean going one built in the USA in almost 50 years. Then....9-11 happened and the bottom fell out for the cruise line....went bankrupt in October 2001. The company had the SS Independence doing Hawaii with the Patriot...and the Delta queen, Mississippi queen, American Queen doing inland rivers in the middle of the USA, and a coastal cruiser off the east coast....plus a riverboat on the Columbia river in the Northwest. The America project set idle in Mississippi for over a year....then some deals and politics were worked out and what was built was towed to Europe and sold to NCL. They formed a company called NCLA so they could meet the requirement to be American flagged and sail the ship in America (Hawaii). During build up it took on a wind storm and sank in port to the 3rd deck....setting it behind another year. I left out some other facts....but this is the short of it. Hope this helps... Chuck
  12. The Mississippi Queen was the second largest paddle wheel driven river steamboat ever built. The ship was the largest such steamboat when she was built in 1976 by the Delta Queen Steamboat Company at Jeffboat, Indiana and was a seven-deck recreation of a classic Mississippi riverboat. She was later owned by the Majestic America Line. The Mississippi Queen had 206 state rooms for a capacity of 412 guests and a crew of 157. When in service, the Mississippi Queen was a genuine stern paddle-wheeler with a wheel that measured 22 feet in diameter by 36 feet wide, weighing 70 tons. The steamboat also featured a 44 whistle steam calliope, which was the largest on the Mississippi River system. After Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, Ambassador Inc. bought the three Queen steamers (Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen, and American Queen) for about $47 million from the now-defunct Delta Queen Steamboat Company. But in late 2008, Ambassador put the trio up for sale and announced the end of paddle-wheeler cruises. The Mississippi Queen was laid up in New Orleans at Perry Street Wharf after being gutted, supposedly for renovation. Instead, however, the steamboat was sold for scrap in May 2009. She was towed for the last time to Morgan City, LA on May 11, 2011 where she was cut down.
  13. I am good friends with Barb, Carol, and Pat; I've made several trips over the years with them on the DELTA QUEEN, MISSISSIPPI QUEEN, and the AMERICAN QUEEN. They are truly delightful people and all retired. And, yes, the trip from Memphis to Cincinnati, during which they were interviewed for the article, was their first trip on the AMERICAN QUEEN under its current management. Although I do know that atleast one of the three has reservations to ride the boat from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati next week.
  14. Hi. I am a 67 year old woman who usually cruises alone - I wear a 3X. I have never had a problem with people commenting on my weight until I met the ventriloquist on the Crown on the 2/8 South American Cruise. I was sitting down front as I thought I could take pictures of the entertainers in the theater. Nature called and I finally had to get up to leave. All the other entertainers came out of the wings but he came down the aisle and we almost collided. I have done a lot of acting and do not get stagefright. But this jerk turned around as I continued up the aisle and started walking behind me, making faces and making remarks like, "doesn't she know the buffet is closed?" and some other stuff. The audience loved it, but I almost cussed the jerk off. We disembarked the next day and I sent a letter to the Cruise Director that I deserve an apology for his very rude behavior. And I finally wrote to NCL and let them know how he treated me. I haven't heard from them yet. Now that is the heighth of discrimination of overweight people. So, don't expect the worst, but it happens. I am usually very gregarious and people learn to overlook it, and I am the first to laugh at myself - but don't disrespect me! 15. I started steamboating in 1980 at age 16, and since then I've been on over 30 trips between the Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and American Queen. I've been on over 20 American queen cruises since 1996 with all sorts of rooms but lately I've only booked inside rooms mostly because of my budget but also in bad weather it's much nicer having an inside room. I also agree with a previous post, I don't like the rooms opening to the deck, early morning noise of the walkers is an issue for me. Others probably don't like me walking late night after closing down the engine room bar. I like the bay window rooms but on a Fall upper Mississippi cruise, it got dark so early, we didn't see much. And in port, the room was often eye level to the town and I felt like a zoo animal in a cage. I of course left the drapes open at night, and was surprised the next morning to see the locals looking in. And in St. Paul, our room was street level at a major intersection. If our room had been on the river side, it would have been a totally different feel. Just make sure if you pick the rooms 201/202, there is no smoking on the attached porch. To me, the A rooms with the private verandas are the best of both worlds - outside space and interior hall. The American Queen is amazing. My next cruise on her isn't until October, but I'm already counting the days.

Vision of the Seas 2 back to back by OldCaver After booking the one week cruise for Christmas, we saw a chance for a good deal the week before, so we turned it into a back to back. As it happens, we qualified as Diamond members about midway through the first week of our two weeks, which meant that our second week would actually have Diamond status with all its perks and privileges. There was a downside or two. There were six of us doing the identical back to back cruise(s), and something went wrong with the process of getting our new sea passes ready. Continue reading... 2 back to back Viking Odin Christmas Markets along the Danube by Rosethorn40 The following is my review of my recent “Romantic Danube/Christmas Markets” river cruise on the Viking Odin. A little background; I am 53, DH is 57 and while we have 20+ cruises under our belt, this was only our second river cruise (The first was on the American Queen-Mississippi River), and our first European river cruise, and our second time to Europe. I like to think of myself as a “Glass Half Full” kind of person, but I must admit I was beginning to worry that this trip would not come anywhere near my expectations after reading several reviews that were full of doom & gloom with all that could go wrong; River levels too high or too low making a river cruise into a bus trip, strikes by the lock workers on the rivers, strikes by the Lufthansa pilots, broken locks, bad weather, etc. Continue reading... Christmas Markets along the Danube Norwegian Breakaway The Haven was our heaven by kernie968 We searched for a cruise out of Boston or New York City, so we could drive and save money. After much research we chose the Breakaway because of the size and activities. The trip included myself, a 50-ish woman, my 62 year old husband and two 19 year old's, my son and his friend. We had decided on two aft balcony rooms when just for fun I checked the price of a Haven aft balcony with the kids sail free sale. It was not much more to go with the Haven room , so we did it. We booked the December 7th cruise. Needless to say we could not wait to try the Haven. Continue reading... The Haven was our heaven Emerald Princess A Merry Christmas Cruise by GradUT I was initially concerned about cruising on the Emerald Princess at Christmas for fear that: 1) the ship would be overrun with unsupervised children, 2) we'd have problems departing and arriving in the Port of Houston due to fog and 3) that the number of passengers would make for a crowded ship. I am happy to report that none of my fears materialized and that our Christmas cruise was very merry indeed. Embarkation: We (two adults in late 50's and two adults in mid 20's) stayed the night prior to the cruise at the Springhill Suites at Hobby Airport. Continue reading... A Merry Christmas Cruise Serenade of the Seas First-time family holiday cruise - great time had by all by rscottbailey My extended family (10 total, ages from mid-70s to early teens) decided to celebrate the holidays somewhere warm where nobody had to host. Most of us were first-time cruisers, although my parents have taken numerous river cruises on much smaller ships. We chose this cruise based on a combination of the dates, the ship size, and itinerary. We all arrived the day before departure, staying overnight at the Hilton Riverside. There are easily-found shuttle busses that take you straight there from the airport for $20 each, or of course the taxis become economical for larger parties sharing a ride. Continue reading... 17. Alexandra, as you can see from my signature I´ve been on a couple of cruises on all three steamboats (Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen, American Queen). I never experienced bad food on any of those ships. It´s true, the cabins are pretty cosy and there´s not much room but I don´t spend much time in my cabin anyway (and we´ve been in cabins for triple occupation as we do travel with our DD - except for the Delta Queen). I´m sorry for your experiences. But anyway this will be a new company. steamboats
  18. Thank you SeaC for the wonderful compliment. I certainly appreciate it. The only other cruise line that had fans so in tune with the lines' history and tradition was the former Delta Queen Steamboat Co. which operated the DELTA QUEEN, MISSISSIPPI QUEEN, and AMERICAN QUEEN on the Mississippi River Tributary System until 2006. It's a pity that there are not more lines today with that sense of history. Sic transit Gloria mundi.
  19. Current Oceania Cruise Line executive, Tim Rubacky, has announced that he will be leaving his position with Oceania and joining the start-up cruise line, The Great American Steamboat Co. On http://www.Steamboats.org he announced that management's, " goal is quite simple, to bring the AQ back and deliver an experience that is even warmer, richer, and friendlier than ever." I wish him the best of luck in his new position. During these trying economic times the challenge is great. Majestic America Line provided a cheapened product, and people like myself, with 100 plus cruises total on the AMERICAN QUEEN, MISSISSIPPI QUEEN, and DELTA QUEEN, left to find other vacation venues. Now, the difficult job is to bring all of us back and grow the numbers of people whom find steamboatin' to be the quintessential American cruise vacation.
  20. Reminds me of the river boats (Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen, etc) that we used to see on the Mississippi River near our home. When they would leave they would play a calliope type song-very cool to hear!
  21. Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen, American Queen and others all cruise the Mississippi River.
  22. We have all of our sail and sign cards from our 11 previous crusies filled away in the file cabinet. Cruised on the Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and the American Queen, Carnival, NCL, Royal Caribbean and with Holland America. We are not loyal to a vessel or cruise line but take the cruise based soley on the itinerary first and than factor in cost and accommodations.
  23. My DH and I are planning on an Upper Mississippi cruise on this boat in October. We will depart from St. Paul and end in St. Louis. We have never sailed with American Cruise Line but have sailed on the old Mississippi Queen, lower Mississippi, while she was under Delta Queen Steamboat Co. Then American Queen, Mississippi & Ohio River; and Queen of the West, Columbia & Snake River, while they were under Majestic America. Then the American Queen, Upper Mississippi going north, while she was under American Queen Steamboat CO. We do like the paddlewheelers. Any info specific to Queen of the Mississippi and/or American Cruise Line would be appreciated. Thanks, Joyce
  24. We´ve done the QotM in 2013. I really liked the product, nice large cabins, good food, mainly local entertainers (but good ones - came onboard for the evening) - although the boat does not have a real paddlewheel and no steam calliope (she has Z-drives and the paddlewheel can add a bit to the speed). Unfortunately my review is in German but you can check out the pictures and those by my DH. We´ve cruised the Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and American Queen quite a few times but haven´t had a chance to cruise the Amercian Queen under the current company yet. We were supposed to cruise St. Paul to St. Louis but due to low water we were rerouted to Cincinnati - St. Louis. steamboats
