  1. are there any cruise topics for this cruise company?
  2. New article on Cruise Critic: Live from Louisiana: Details on American Queen Steamboat Company's New Cruise Ships As a side note, the article mentions that American Queen Steamboat Company has purchased Victory Cruise Lines and taken over their ships Victory I and Victory II, which will sail the Great Lakes, the Eastern Seaboard and possibly, Mexico. Other news includes an expansion into Alaska cruises by chartering Ocean Victory in 2021. The 200-passenger ship, being built in China by SunStone Ships, will have icebreaking capabilities and an array of expedition features, such as an observation lounge and Zodiacs. Thus American Queen Steamboat Company is more than just a river cruise line, and will keep its own forum on Cruise Critic rather than being merged into River Cruising. [Same with American Cruise Line, which also does cruises in Alaska in addition to its focus on US river cruises.]
  3. Food is poor and service is worse because of high turnover of personnel.
  4. Just in case anyone is interested, I'm just sitting in an airport waiting to fly and join the QV on her WC this year in San Francisco and I have started my blog again. Address is... https://butarewethereyet.blogspot.com I'm hoping that I can encourage others on board to come onto this thread and add their experiences as well, though from all accounts the WIFI has been slow and difficult this year. Hopefully it will improve in the Pacific. regards Roscoe
  5. Hi everyone - Tomorrow, I'll be heading down to New Orleans, where I'll be boarding AQSC's newest ship, American Duchess, on Friday. It's a short preview cruise before the christening on Monday. Let me know if you have any questions!
  6. Will be sailing on the American Duchess for the 2018 Thanksgiving Cruise from Nashville to Chattanooga from Nov. 18 - Nov. 26. Anyone out there planning on taking the same cruise? We will be leaving our car in Nashville, so am trying to figure a convenient way to cover the 140 miles from Chattanooga back to Nashville. Flying is an all day adventure, so looking for something else.
  7. Has anyone recently returned from a South American cruise: Buenos Aires to Santiago or vice-versa? How was the trip? Any suggestions? Any tips? We are sailing in a few weeks and wanted to hear the latest information. Thanks for your input.
  8. I posted this question in the casino forum but got no answer so hoping someone here can help since this is a busier forum... I have a question I hope some Americans who have gambled on MSC can answer. If you are American and hit a jackpot ($1200 or over) on an MSC cruise sailing in EUROPE will they issue you a W2G tax form and report the winnings to the IRS? I ask this question because MSC is not a U.S. based company and we would not be sailing through U.S. ports when sailing in Europe. I have also heard that the slot machines are all set to Euros. I am guessing that when MSC sails out of U.S. ports to places in the Caribbean, etc. that the tax rule is in effect as I have heard that all the machines are changed to dollars for those sailings. I always get a tax form when sailing with Celebrity, NCL, etc. but those are U.S. based companies. I know that MSC has offices in the U.S. so I'm not sure if that counts as being "U.S. based" and therefore Americans are subject to the cruise line reporting winnings to the IRS or not or if that only applies when an MSC ship is sailing into/out of a U.S. port.

    American Regatta excursion

Hi - has anyone taken this sailing excursion? I've never sailed before and it sounds exciting but I would like to hear about other people's experiences.
  11. I am looking into the Asian cruises for future options that leave out of Japan and China. Both trips are on either the Majestic or the Sapphire, and I know that the latter has, what I am guessing is, Chinese writing on lots of the signs through the ship. So I guess they are expecting lots of locals to board these cruises. I am just wondering if there is a big number of Americans on the ship or even if it is still catered to a more American/English-speaking audience.
  12. Hi! I'll be going for the first time - on the American Queen - this November, for my mom's 70th birthday. I was curious about the dress code for dinner? Are Jeans and a Polo ok? Also, I noticed there was a "cinema" on board...which after looking at a picture just looked like a room with a big tv... Do they just show old dvds or what? Are there a DVD players in the rooms? Also...will there be anyone else there that aren't senior citizens? :) One more: Alcohol - is it open bar or is that just during dinner?
  13. I don’t write many reviews, but we see so little about American river cruising that I thought this on needed a review. Mrs Banjo and I were on the American Queen October 15 from Memphis to New Orleans. Here is the great, the good and the needs improvement. the ship was great, it was clean and in good repair. The captain and crew were pleasant and well trained. We really enjoyed the engine room that was available to tour at any time, it was very interesting. We also enjoyed the captain, who had a great sense of humor and is a really good guitar player! The service staff was always pleasant and helpful and kept our cabin neat and clean. we found the food to be generally very good, but we are not really fussy eaters so we are not hard to please. Food is also very subjective, i’ll Leave it that the food good and plentiful. Wines served at dinner were always good, not fabulous, but good. The wait staff was pleasant, but could have used a bit more training, IMHO. They didn’t seem to know when to replace silverware or what was needed, (always had to ask for a steak knife, etc). The daily HoHo bus was ok, it provided a brief overview and some basic transport, we used it whenever we did not buy a premium tour and were glad it was there. The premium tours were generally very good with the exception of the pre-cruise tour that we thought was managed rather poorly. They had 3 busses of incoming people, (150+/-) all arrive at Graceland , expecting to see the mansion at the same time. Can you say lines and confusion.... did I say I don’t like lines. This particular tour could have been managed much better with very little effort. The pre cruise hotel, well that was a three ring circus. The Sheridan is a convention hotel, with a convention checking out while the cruise people were trying to check in. Here’s how it went; stand in line for 30 minutes, get to the front desk, check in, “sorry sir, your room is not ready, we’ll text you when it is ready, NEXT”. so we go leave our luggage in a ballroom full of other luggage. Ok, so let’s check in with American Queen..... another long line, we leave, go to grab a late lunch could not get service in the hotel restaurant or bar, go back to check in hours later, line is now longer, stand in line for another hour to check in, we get a text that our room is ready, back to the lobby, stand in line for another 15 minutes to get room keys. I think you get the picture, Overall, we did enjoy the cruise, but it did get off to a bad start that I think was not necessary. Hopefully they can make some improvements. Once on the boat it was a real treat.
  14. New article on Cruise Critic: Celebrity Cruises Partners with Renowned Chef and American Ballet Theater This is huge! Daniel Boulud is a terrific chef, and this partnership will benefit Celebrity guests both in suites [the Luminae menu] and everywhere [the tastings menu and chef training]. The partnership with American Ballet Theatre means that entertainment will NOT be strictly Grammy and American Idol pop music. There is hope!

    Sunday in Key West

We are on the Celebrity Equinox in June and will be in Key West on Sunday from 7AM-5PM. Do the attractions open later on Sundays? Are there any limits on when bars and such can open for business?

    Key West and Customs

We are on the Jade next week (Yeah!!) and our last stop is Key West. I thought I read something about US Customs if your last stop was Key West but I can't find what I read and a search of the forum didn't find it for me. Will we go through customs in Key West or the next day when we return to Miami? Thanks!

    Captain of Queen Elizabeth

Hi does anyone know who is the current Captain of QUeen Elizabeth? We are joining her on Wednesday for a quick trip to Adelaide 🙂
  19. We were in Pago Pago, American Samoa last month and, like numerous cruise ship passengers, did not book tours with the ship. We simply got off the ship to look around. There were some vendors set up nearby and one of them was a tour company called Best Tours - American Samoa. There were a lot of people wanting their 3-hour tour ($40 USD) and we were one of the lucky ones to get seats. They took us to parts of the National Park and to some small villages. The memorable thing about the villages was seeing school children walking home. Without exception, every single one of them wanted to engage us in some way, be it conversation or just exchanging smiles and waves. I have never seen such a happy, friendly and welcoming bunch of children anywhere. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and, had we known about this tour company in advance, would have made reservations by email. 20. Hi: Husband and I are planning on a cruise July 14 or 28, 2019 Pacific Northwest on the Columbia and Snake Rivers; Clarkston to Vancouver. Looking at Cabin C Deluxe Veranda Stateroom. Would appreciate all feedback positive and negative regarding the cruise; excursions; premium excursions (worth the extra money?). Called AAA and they claim that they can provide more perks than going direct with AQSC as well as giving better service for pre-cruise advise. Anyone else go this route? I read Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. Excellent history of the entire Lewis and Clark expedition. Looking forward to actually being there. Looking forward to all feedback and chatting with anyone who has/is going on this cruise. Joanne
  21. We just returned from a 22 day cruise and 9 nights pre and post cruise visit to South America . The cruise was on the HAL Zaandam from San Antonio , Chile to Buenos Aires Argentina . We took over 10,000 photos on this trip so it will take a while to cull , download , edit and upload to Photo Bucket before writing , so please be patient . It will be mostly in chronological order and will use some photos from our previous cruises to South America . So , bags packed and ready to go ? Boarding passes ? OK , lets go .
  22. On some cruise lines, we have travelled with suite passengers have spa access included (equivalent to aqua spa area). I suspect this does not apply on Cunard? I was also wondering, do the Q4 suites have a sun lounger on the balcony? Many thanks.
  23. Hello fellow cruisers, We have never cruised with Cunard before. I read each person is allowed to bring one bottle of champagne on board. Is this true? Thanks!

    Queen Victoria Spa Treatments

Can anyone comment on the quality and cost of the spa treatments on Queen Victoria? We are on the Baltic cruise 7/16 out of Hamburg, and I usually like to do at least one massage while on a cruise. Seems to add to the relaxation element quite a bit. Thanks in advance. Anita.
  25. I booked a cruise for this June that disembarks in Civitavecchia specifically so we can visit the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. We will be staying at a hotel by the airport, and it looks like we can take the train from FCO down to Nettuno and walk the remainder. Has anyone done this? Is it actually doable? We have been in Italy before, but have never used the trains, so I am not familiar with how this mode of transportation works. Do I need to book these tickets in advance? Any idea of approximate cost? We are also considering renting a car if taking the train will be too complicated. I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you!
