  1. I don’t write many reviews, but we see so little about American river cruising that I thought this on needed a review. Mrs Banjo and I were on the American Queen October 15 from Memphis to New Orleans. Here is the great, the good and the needs improvement. the ship was great, it was clean and in good repair. The captain and crew were pleasant and well trained. We really enjoyed the engine room that was available to tour at any time, it was very interesting. We also enjoyed the captain, who had a great sense of humor and is a really good guitar player! The service staff was always pleasant and helpful and kept our cabin neat and clean. we found the food to be generally very good, but we are not really fussy eaters so we are not hard to please. Food is also very subjective, i’ll Leave it that the food good and plentiful. Wines served at dinner were always good, not fabulous, but good. The wait staff was pleasant, but could have used a bit more training, IMHO. They didn’t seem to know when to replace silverware or what was needed, (always had to ask for a steak knife, etc). The daily HoHo bus was ok, it provided a brief overview and some basic transport, we used it whenever we did not buy a premium tour and were glad it was there. The premium tours were generally very good with the exception of the pre-cruise tour that we thought was managed rather poorly. They had 3 busses of incoming people, (150+/-) all arrive at Graceland , expecting to see the mansion at the same time. Can you say lines and confusion.... did I say I don’t like lines. This particular tour could have been managed much better with very little effort. The pre cruise hotel, well that was a three ring circus. The Sheridan is a convention hotel, with a convention checking out while the cruise people were trying to check in. Here’s how it went; stand in line for 30 minutes, get to the front desk, check in, “sorry sir, your room is not ready, we’ll text you when it is ready, NEXT”. so we go leave our luggage in a ballroom full of other luggage. Ok, so let’s check in with American Queen..... another long line, we leave, go to grab a late lunch could not get service in the hotel restaurant or bar, go back to check in hours later, line is now longer, stand in line for another hour to check in, we get a text that our room is ready, back to the lobby, stand in line for another 15 minutes to get room keys. I think you get the picture, Overall, we did enjoy the cruise, but it did get off to a bad start that I think was not necessary. Hopefully they can make some improvements. Once on the boat it was a real treat.
  2. Hi! I'll be going for the first time - on the American Queen - this November, for my mom's 70th birthday. I was curious about the dress code for dinner? Are Jeans and a Polo ok? Also, I noticed there was a "cinema" on board...which after looking at a picture just looked like a room with a big tv... Do they just show old dvds or what? Are there a DVD players in the rooms? Also...will there be anyone else there that aren't senior citizens? :) One more: Alcohol - is it open bar or is that just during dinner?

  5. Does anyone know when American Cruise Line’s American Song debuts? Or has it already? I am booked for 2019 but can’t seem to find information on this ship. I looked at the website, but can’t find any date. I want to read some reviews on this ship. It looks incredible. Thanks for your help.

    Save the Queen!

It is now official! At a signing ceremony in Washington, DC the president signed into law S-140 the bill which has an amendment which would once again allow the U.S. National Historic Landmark, Steamer DELTA QUEEN to travel once again overnight on the much fabled Mississippi River System. The boat's owner The Delta Queen Steamboat Co. www.deltaqueen.com reports that after a complete refurbishment the DELTA QUEEN will return to service in 2020.
  7. I understand that this may be a can of worms, as much of this topic is very subjective. I know for every good review you can find two bad reviews, and vice versa -- but from Forum browsing and googling, it does appear that MSC gets weighted a little to the less favorable side, but again there are MANY proponents on here. Im a semi experienced cruiser, Caribbean primarily, but across Celebrity, Norwegian, Royal and Carnival. Im not blown away with the food or the venues - they all have their pros and cons, but Im simple, I like my interior cabin cave, I do like the staff being friendly, I like some deck antics by the entertainment staff but I dont need 5 Star treatment and Top Tier food. Im all about getting away and waking up in a new port, exploring and coming back to grab a less than impressive, but very satisfying burger. With all that said, most of the negative reviews of MSC tend to lean towards not reaching that pinnacle class of experience. For a casual cruiser, as described, that is interested in trying a Mediterranean MSC Cruise, do you think it would live up to the expectations that I typically have for cruise lines? Or is it really that much different? Would love your feedback

    4 Day West Coast Cruise

Does anyone happen to have the Patters for the 4 day west coast Emerald Princess Cruises?
  12. I thought about starting a Roll Call for this trip but getting to the river cruise roll calls - especially the US ones - is just more complicated than it ought to be! We’ll be on the American Queen these two weeks, “finishing” the Mississippi. (We traveled down river between the Saints about ten years ago.) Anybody else on one or both of these legs this year?
  13. We were in Pago Pago, American Samoa last month and, like numerous cruise ship passengers, did not book tours with the ship. We simply got off the ship to look around. There were some vendors set up nearby and one of them was a tour company called Best Tours - American Samoa. There were a lot of people wanting their 3-hour tour ($40 USD) and we were one of the lucky ones to get seats. They took us to parts of the National Park and to some small villages. The memorable thing about the villages was seeing school children walking home. Without exception, every single one of them wanted to engage us in some way, be it conversation or just exchanging smiles and waves. I have never seen such a happy, friendly and welcoming bunch of children anywhere. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and, had we known about this tour company in advance, would have made reservations by email. Snorkeling West Bay

The last West Bay thread the forum had no longer has pics, it is a fairly old thread. Roatan, while it has heaps of reef some of it is difficult to access due to the distance from the shore or because the beaches are inside a resort. West Bay is one of the easiest to access reef snorkel spots on the island. West Bay beach is also the premier beach on the island. This map shows the boat free reef snorkling between Infinity Bay's L shaped dock and the Wall. Along the beach toward the wall in this area are Infinity Bay (offers day passes) Tabyana ( cruise ship only excursion) and Grand Roatan (no day passes I know of). If you wish boat free, reef snorkeling steps from your lounger your best bets are Tabyana or Infinity (their day pass can be high and limited, best to contact them directly) This is a link to a Trip Advisor thread with a recent video of snorkeling West Bay. There are several more on Utube. With regard to transportation, there are two cruise ship ports on the island, one Mahogany Bay, belongs Carnival, it is a healthy 45 mins from West Bay and Coxen Hole which is about 20min from West Bay. Taxi on the island are not regulated, if are adventurous, are willing to take your chances walking out to the main road, enjoy hagging and know some Spanish you maybe be able to get a taxi to sort you for a lower price than you would closer to the port. If you choose the route make sure you arrange round-trip transport and pay upon the return. Often times it makes more sense to hire a private driver from one of the local tour operators, the rates from Mahogany Bay range from 25pp to 30pp depending on how many in your party, I have seen the rate as low as 15pp but that was a group of 10. You also have the option of a group transport either with a ship excursion or of the tour operators. The option I like most is to connect several of the resorts on West Bay that offer transport included day pass option. Bananarama, Beachers, Mayan Princess, Foster's, and Infinity Bay, Paradise Beach Club, there may be others I am forgetting. I hope this helps many in their planning.

    Key West pier

My husband just read that a cruise ship crashed into a mooring dolphin at Mallory Square in Key West and that the pier will be closed for a few months. We are on the Brilliance in February and one of our stops is Key West. Does anybody know if RCCL docks at Mallory Square or somewhere else? If they dock at Mallory Square, are they able to use another pier?

  19. Hi: Husband and I are planning on a cruise July 14 or 28, 2019 Pacific Northwest on the Columbia and Snake Rivers; Clarkston to Vancouver. Looking at Cabin C Deluxe Veranda Stateroom. Would appreciate all feedback positive and negative regarding the cruise; excursions; premium excursions (worth the extra money?). Called AAA and they claim that they can provide more perks than going direct with AQSC as well as giving better service for pre-cruise advise. Anyone else go this route? I read Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. Excellent history of the entire Lewis and Clark expedition. Looking forward to actually being there. Looking forward to all feedback and chatting with anyone who has/is going on this cruise. Joanne

    American Express OBC

On one travel agent site I saw that if you booked through your American Express card you were entitled to additional OBC. I recall doing this several years ago for a Norwegian cruise and the obc was substantial and was in addition to the cruise line obc and travel agency obc. Just wondering if this American Express deal is limited only to that particular travel agency, or if it applies to any that I would book with. I know I could call my TA and ask. However, I'm not ready to book just yet, and I know she'll start with the "ready to book yet" emails if I initiate an inquiry.

Case of wine on the Queen Mary

Hello I am booked for a 40 day voyage from New York to Singapore on the Queen Mary 2 departing January 3. In the past I have routinely carried on 4 bottles of wine and resupplied at various port calls. More than happy to pay the corkage fees. I am thinking this time of bringing on a case in New York and am wondering if anyone has had experience doing this and what the hassle factor is transporting the case from the pier to my cabin. Any danger of breakage? Is it a hassle for the stevedores to handle a case? Any help appreciated. Take care and thank you. Deck Chair.

  25. Hi. I am considering a cruise on the American Queen, Memphis to New Orleans. My husband is having knee surgery, but will be walking by then, though a bit slow. So I don't want to book this if getting on/off the ship is difficult (lots of steps, long walk from ship to port area, etc.) HCan anyone give me some info that could help me decide if this is a good choice for us?? thanks.
