  1. I thought I would start a new thread for the Scenic Eclipse. The other thread is filled with so much negativity and naysayers. Scenic just named a captain for the ship. We are booked July, 2021 for the Arctic. Based on everything I have read, I am hopeful that the Eclipse will launch this August as planned. https://www.scenicusa.com/ocean-cruises/introducing-captain-james-griffiths?utm_source=SilverpopMailing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Eclipse_Captain Announcement 043019_Consumer (1)&utm_content=&spMailingID=21419598&spUserID=NTA5ODUzMzg2MzI5S0&spJobID=1481949235&spReportId=MTQ4MTk0OTIzNQS2
  2. We are boarding Sept 8 for Alaska. I am curious as who the house band is and the cruise director. Anyone happen to know. thanks Brockmom 😀
  3. Many thanks for the photos, it will be most interesting to know how 200 passengers are going to enjoy viewing the icebergs as they cruise Antarctica. It appears the best view will mean going outside into the cold. We had a fantastic voyage to South Georgia and Antarctica onboard Seabourn Quest and although twice as many passengers the viewing from their observation lounge was amazing. We also had a great view from our cabin and balcony, as I guess the best option will be on the Eclipse, but it is always more enjoyable to be seeing the view on both sides of the ship and in a warm and fun environment. It will be most interesting to read more reviews as time goes by.
  4. My wife is a wheelchair user but can walk short distances, but stairs are out. She can step into a tender, but not go down the stairs. Has anyone used the wheelchair lift down to the tender on the Celebrity Eclipse? Various calls to the Accessible folks have not been helpful, depends on the Capitan and we fully understand. We are on the upcoming 15 night Hawaii cruise in October, and two of the ports are Tendered. Thanks for any help. Jerry
  5. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated August 23rd, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 6. I'm taking my mom on the upcoming Sept 1st Eclipse sailing to Alaska for her 50th birthday. After paying for the cruise itself I don't have much extra money leftover so I'm wondering the importance of having a meal at one of the specialty dining restaurants. While my mom and I both love food, I wouldn't say we have the most refined pallette (we consider Olive Garden "fine dining") so will we be just as happy eating solely in the MDR (and the buffet for some breakfasts and lunches) or are we missing out by not exploring some of the other dining options? I also feel like if we don't dine end up dining at one of the specialty restaurants we could use that money to have a meal in one of the Alaskan ports so I'm just trying to figure out which would be more special/enjoyable for my mom. If we did end up having a specialty dining meal it would probably be at the Tuscan Grille (my mom is a vegetarian so I don't think Qsine would work, we don't eat Sushi, and Murano's menu looks a bit too fancy for us 😂) I would really appreciate any opinions or insight! Thanks so much!
  7. My wife and I will be sailing to Hawaii on Eclipse in late October. Depending on how the games go, the World Series may still be going on after we sail. If you have been on a cruise when the World Series was on, did the ship provide the broadcast? We have watched the Super Bowl on a cruise, but we have never been onnoard during the World Series.
  8. Equinox is currently sailing the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale... Eclipse is sailing to Alaska on September 1, 2019 (round trip Vancouver)... With a week to go before departure, it is likely that the trip is now booked at or very close to capacity save for potential last minute cancellations but—by all means—research if curious...
  9. We love the speciality restaurants and normally recommend but it doesn’t sound like food is a big deal for you. As long as your Mum’s birthday isn’t first night why not try the MDR, have a look at the speciality restaurants and then decide? The speciality restaurants often offer discounts too so don’t be afraid to ask for a deal if you decide to try. Tuscan is a great venue to dine in as you are leaving a port, the wake view is fantastic. Most of the special restaurants we saw in Alaska focused on fish...You may prefer to look at spending money on a special excursion.... If you let your waiter know about your mum’s birthday they will provide a small cake at dessert time and sing to her! Re being a vegetarian...All of the speciality restaurants will customise meals for all dietary needs. If you let them know in advance your options are wider. We love Eclipse, hope you have a fantastic cruise! Remember, you are allowed to take on board two bottles of wine, this can be champagne. Your room attendant will put it on ice for you in your room for no charge. If you wish to enjoy at dinner there is a corkage fee ($20?). Fizz always adds to an occasion even if you have a drinks package!
  10. We just got off the Eclipse last Sunday after a wonderful week of cruising to Alaska. We live in the State of Washington, about a 75 minute drive from our house, through Canadian Customs, and parking in the lower levels at Canada Place. They took our luggage, then an elevator ride up and we were on our way through check in and customs. I think we might have waited 5 minutes, then onto the ship by 11:00. One of the most absolutely pain-less embarkations we have ever done in 25 cruises. Lunch in the Ocean View, along with visiting with a few people on this ever so friendly cruise, and our room was ready. The entire cruise was GREAT. The water was smooth the entire trip. My favorite part was the three hours at the Hubbard Glacier. The Captain got within a half mile, although the glacier is so huge, it seemed like we could almost touch it. The entertainment was quite good overall. Singers and Dancers did several shows that were all very good. A couple nights of comedians were so-so, Two highlight entertainment features were the A cappella group from Vox Audio, and the Not Really the Three Tenors. Both were fabulous!!!!We enjoy meeting new people each night at dinner, so we choose Select dining. Excellent service by Juan and his assistant. Food was also excellent, with a great variety on each and every menu. We had breakfast in the Ocean View Buffet and this was also a great experience.Overall, one of our very best cruises. We got off at each port but honestly we just enjoy the ship anymore. Although we were an hour late getting to Vancouver, disembarkation was just as easy as getting on the ship.
  11. Hello has anyone who has re-booked after their eclipse cancellations received any other perks other than the 25% discount?
  12. I would recommend 2 itineraries. First one is a Barcelona to Greece cruise. We did the Celebrity Eclipse cruise last October. Mallorca, Messina, Mykonos, Athens, Santorini, Rhodes then Malta. 4 sea days. Most ports were easy to see in one day. We went in mid Oct. Our next European cruise will start in Venice and end in Rome. We will stay 2 days precruise in Venice and 4-5 post cruise days in Rome. The large European cities simply have too much to see in one port day. I have already been to Rome and Venice (4 days Rome, 2 in Venice) and I want to see more.
  13. Greetings from the lovely Celebrity Eclipse! Around noon ship time (US Pacific), Captain Leo announced that due to trouble with engine at full speed, our arrival into Sitka on Tuesday, 8/20 will be delayed for at least 1 1/2 hours with an update expected this evening around 6:30pm. We'll let y'all know how it shakes out 😉 First 24 hours have been awesome ... enjoying very cool temperatures and fantastic shipboard crew & staff. Also, even though we only had 15 people sign up for a Cruise Critic Connections party, they arranged for a get-together in Masters Cellar, deck 4 at 10:15 today. Wonderful table set up with juices, coffee, tea, water and pastries. Simon the CD, Clint the HD, and Erika the event coordinator all attended. Unfortunately only 10 of us showed up ... please folks, support these events and show Celebrity how awesome we Cruise Critic passengers are! Thanks!
  14. So the ship isn't being launched until 2018, but have put down a deposit on an Antarctica cruise for Jan 2019. Any one else booked on this ship yet?
  15. I was on the Solstice (sister ship to the Eclipse) and was not able to access the tender on our 2018 Hawaiian cruise (Maui and Kona).
  16. Morning everyone, apologies if this question has been asked before but I couldn't find the answer. I've never sailed Celebrity before and I'd like to know if there are any balcony's that are half shaded. I'm a pale skinned Scot, married to an Aussie who tans, so the balcony cabins that have a bit of shade suit us both. I've looked through the cabin information spreadsheet, but any pictures I see appear to have fully covered balconys. Thanks in advance. Trish
  17. I posted a few days ago but perhaps with all of the back-and-forth of messages and photographs no one had time to respond. So I’ll give it one more try. We are set to board the ship on September 10 out of New York. We are trying to get an idea from somebody who is presently on the ship as to what the ambient temperature is in the common area’s of the ship during the day and evening. I tend to run rather warm while my wife tends to run a bit cooler. We’re trying to figure Out how to pack. Ships we have sailed on in the past 10 to keep the temperature pretty warm – – short sleeve weather. Is that the same on the scenic eclipse? We’d really appreciate it if somebody on board would take the time to answer this for us. It will help us pack and are sure that we will enjoy ourselves more. Thank you in advance to whomever will be kind enough to share an answer.
  18. I am sure it has been asked many times before but......what dining room and what time is it open? I struggle with the search function on this site
  19. What's the Eclipse looking like these days? I know it is scheduled for dry dock in Nov 2020 and I am looking at a cruise on it in April. Is it still kept up or are there signs of deferred maintenance. It's been awhile since I was on the S class but in general I love them. Thanks.
  20. Hi, we are new to Celebrity and wondering which venues will be available to us (regular balcony stateroom category) for lunch upon Embarking.
  21. We're boarding the Celebrity Eclipse in Vancouver tomorrow, which is itinerary 1 on the OP's post. We were on the NCL Pearl 10 years ago and went to Glacier Bay and Skagway, so looking forward to Hubbard and ISP.
  22. So pleased your cruise is going well. I often think about how nice it would be to meet up with fellow posters but I don’t think my constitution would cope with your cocktail consumption! You are so right about how an interested sommelier can really enhance a dining experience. We had fantastic ones in both Murano’s and Tuscan on Eclipse last cruise (each night we asked for wine pairing recommendations for our courses). Every night they found time to talk us through, checked we liked, regularly passed by to check our glasses were still part filled.... Prior to the drinks packages we had tended to stick to ‘tried and trusted’ wines we knew. We would also share a bottle so we would make compromises to find a wine that suited both our choices. I must say I would miss having a drinks package now!
  23. We've done both on Celebrity, and honestly I can't choose a favorite! But, I do like Vancouver much better than Seattle. We were just on the Eclipse out of Vancouver a couple of weeks ago. I'd choose based on the ports of call vs. the glacier. Sailing to the glaciers is really cool and very exciting, however its just a few hours out of your cruise. When we went on the Solstice out of Seattle, we went to Skagway, Ketchikan, Juneau, and Victoria Island. The one we just did out of Vancouver went to Sitka, Ketchikan, and Juneau. Skagway has the White Pass and Yukon Route railroad, which is one of my favorite excursions I've ever done, and since you will have a kid with you, would be fun. However, you can't go wrong with either itinerary.
  24. I thought what I was conveying was getting across, but it’s obvious that it hasn’t, so let me clarify. I do not have a problem with the food on Princess. I’ve not said that Cunard are not surpassed. I have a problem with the interior design and decor, and the things they do, and feel that not just of Princess, but of other mass market cruise lines in general: Holland America, NCL, *Carnival*, Royal Caribbean etc. Another member here posted that Mac & Cheese was an “abomination”. I stated that I love a good gourmet Mac & Cheese and have prepared a really good version at home. However, I just don’t believe Mac & Cheese (or burgers) belong on the dinner menu. Lunch, yes. Dinner, no. If I ran the restaurants, they wouldn’t be (on the dinner menu). It’s just a matter of personal style. I also have not criticized the menu of the Verandah. Do I think a burger should be on the dinner menu? No. Do I have a problem with the rest? No. It’s a *grill*. Steaks and chops are what *should* be on the menu. In fact, the original Verandah restaurant on the 1936 QUEEN MARY, was the “Verandah Grill”. On the NORMANDIE, the extra tariff restaurant was simply known as the “Grill Room”. That’s what those restaurants were. So the “Steakhouse at the Verandah” is, no matter what they call it, a Grill. And the current menu is as it should be. I have no problem with it. I never said I did. As far as the mention of “B.B. King” or “Rolling Stone”, those are venues found on Holland America ships (this was discussed earlier in the thread, before I commented). I was criticizing, once again, mass market cruise lines in general, not just Princess. Don’t get me started on NCL or Carnival (and then there is the terrible, ugly design and silhouette of “ships” these days. Sorry, but the “Royal Class” design externally is just hideous. I mean, it’s just a floating apartment block. Come on!) What I *am* saying is that Cunard has an image, style and tradition to uphold. It appeals to a certain customer, a certain audience. They need to maintain that. The dress codes, the menu selections, the interior design, all of it. Tacky tchotchke tables outside the Queens Room is a big, hard NO. Not appropriate for Cunard (and really, in my opinion, not appropriate anywhere (except maybe NCL and Carnival. It’s not like they are the epitome of class and style to begin with). By the way. It’s not really Art Deco and Victorian. Some of the decorative touches you are referring to as “Victorian” are actually more *Edwardian*, if you want to go there. They echo more the style of MAURETANIA, AQUITANIA, or LUSITANIA, or the White Star Line ships OLYMPIC, BRITANNIC, etc. Queen Victoria died January, 1901. Cunard isn’t going back to the style of late 19th century ships. Also, Art Deco doesn’t equate to “Cunard” ship design. What it *does* equate to is the design prevalent at the apex of the age of the great ocean liners, the 1930’s, and *that* is what people want to be able to experience: that bygone era of style, beauty and grace of the original QM, NORMANDIE, ILE DE FRANCE, etc. Like I said I do like the design of the new Britannia Club on QV. But it’s really not that “contemporary”. Make no mistake. It’s still very much a Deco inspired design (except for the chandeliers). There is one line that used to have really great contemporary interior design: Celebrity. I’m talking back when the Celebrity SUMMIT and her three sisters were sailing. Those ships had contemporary interior design and yet, still felt, somehow like “modern classic” (the squared off, container ship rear ends externally, were another matter). A contemporary take on classic. Elegant. Stylish. Sadly they’ve now lost their way and given themselves over to gigantism (ECLIPSE ships I’m looking at you. And SOLSTICE et al.) and ugly interiors too. Part of the problem with mass market cruise ships today, is that they are well, “mass market”. That means appealing to the lowest common denominator. You get all kinds of passengers on cruises these days. *All kinds*. Also, another problem (as someone else put it either here or elsewhere, I can’t remember) is that they really aren’t run by shipping lines. They are run by what are essentially *entertainment travel companies*. Hence the Royal Caribbean monstrosities, and others. That, however, is for another discussion.
  25. I am about to head out on the Eclipse in a week and wonder if they do any dining specials for LPC? We would love to try it but with the mixed reviews, it's a bit steep at $110 for a couple. I know the other two have first night discounts, but not LPC. Perhaps only once we get onboard? TIA 🙂 Getting excited!
