  1. It will definitely be interesting to see how this all eventually turns out as we would very much enjoy going back on another "drive by" cruise around the Antarctica peninsula in Jan 2023/4. But, if the only way after Jan 2022 winds up being on expedition ships at $1,000+ pp/day, not counting the adventure flying between the US and Ushuaia, then we will always cherish those past memories of when we went there on the Zaandam in 2018. BTW we were booked on the upcoming Nov 27th Westerdam Solar Eclipse/Antarctica cruise in an aft-facing cabin I might add, but recently decided to cancel as there is no way that cruise is going to happen in our current environment.
  2. Eclipse Oct 11 has been canceled like many other cruise and they are just not showing on the public website yet. Internally Celebrity calls them Phase 7 cancellations. It does show canceled as do several of my cruises on the the Travel agent specific websites. It seems that the public would like to know at the same time travel agents do. Richard Fain has numerous YouTube videos addressing the travel agents. Neither he or any senior Celebrity management provide videos on YouTube addressing the loyal celebrity cruisers. Hence much speculation on Cruise Critic, very little facts. Mirage
  3. I spent a few early evenings with Matthew Corbett of Sooty 'fame' on Celebrity Eclipse. The first day of the same cruise I also met someone from my then place of work!
  4. I was relieved to see that a refund for the 2nd suite I booked for our family July 10 Alaska cruise was posted on my cc this morning. Still missing is $200 for the deposits to a different CC, so I will give HAL a few more days for that. So far all of our HAL cancelled cruises have been refunded. It was over 100 days for this to be credited. I did a live chat and was given the email for accounting. Maybe that moved things along. I am still waiting for HAL to decide about our Nov. 27th South America/Antarctica/Solar Eclipse cruise. I stopped making payments on that in March. Final payment is Sept. 14th. I hope a decision is made before that!
  5. For those of you who sailed, who was the operator for your expedition? The solar eclipse itinerary for next year is run by Albatross, so experiences onboard may differ even if we go on the same ship. @aimee0715 we are booked on the sailing you are interested in. We decided on a 800 deck cabin due to the responses here and help from Albatross.

  7. Thanks for the data on the document - it was interesting to read it against the Manifesto that Ponant is using and the rules for PG. We have a cruise we booked two years ago - to see a full solar eclipse in Dec 20 on PG so highly interested. The rules provided will make boarding long and difficult, present no plan if you are either "positive" or denied boarding, and treats everyone on the ship as if everyone is possible contaminated making the trip a "no fun zone" in my opinion with limited dining, diving, entertainment, excursion activites. The US CDC public comment questionaire is long and not very user friendly for consumers but I may make a stab at some of the questions. But as the CDC cannot take emails - good grief - your responses need to be made via a special web portal or snail mail. Here is the URL if interested in the questions or providing answers. https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=CDC-2020-0087-0001. This has the response web site and snail mail address. One comment on your idea that a test that is 50% accurate would be worth while - we already have that test and it is a coin and is free and not worth much for disease identification. In reality medical testing evaluation is based more on positive predictive value - if you have the disease your test is positive (sensitivity) and negative if you don't have the disease (specificity). Together these make up the positive predictive value (PPV) - the key data point. You have to remember that once you have an outcome to a test you have to do something - treat, isolated, disinfect ect. the positive and let the negative go. If you release half of the infected people (test that is 50% correct) back to the community that is really bad for Covid - 19 control/contact tracing. Sorry our testing has to have a PPV in the 90%'s or we are wasting our time. Sorry
  8. X has shown little interest in longer sailings. Really miss the 14 night So. Caribbean itinerary they used to run on Eclipse. To get me interested in a world cruise they'd have to throw in free laundry.
  9. Beginning with the Infinity, as the ships get revolutionized the FV will be redone as Sunset Suites. Those new suites will be priced at or above the Celebrity Suites and below the Royal Suites. We booked one for a upcoming cruise on the Eclipse, however with the revolutionizing on a indefinite hold we are waiting to see what X will do since they won’t have Sunset Suites in place.
  10. My Scenic cruise included Antarctica, Falklands Islands, and South Georgia. If you have time, including Falklands Islands and South Georgia in your Antarctica expedition is a must. You will be able to see a more complete list of various penguin species and have more opportunity to see other wildlife in action. There is one hike up a snow covered hill to see penguin colonies, although there are plenty of penguins along the shore leading up to the hill. There are no snorkeling or diving. Unless you do not swim, kayaking is highly recommended In the serene water with a snow-covered backdrop. The feel is very different than kayaking in the Norwegian fjords. If you still do not want to kayak, no problem, because you can take the zodiac ride to see whales, dolphins, leopard seals, and etc.. There are plenty of included excursions available to keep you busy, but you can opt to relax on the ship watching the dolphins or admiring the scenery with a drink or specialty tea (make your own). It is your vacation. You decide. A balcony is convenient, because sometimes I can keep my pj on while watching sunrise or sunset. Port or starboard sides are irrelevant here, because there is action all around. I spend most time in the lounges (food and drink) to enjoy view, and rush out to the open deck when there is interesting action. Eclipse is polar class ship. My friends like Silversea, and they also like Crystal and Scenic. Someday, I shall try Silversea. It all depends on the itinerary.
  11. My friends took Silversea’s Antartica cruise and loved it very much. Per their positive experience, I signed up for the same cruise. Just before I made deposit and final payment, I switched to Scenic. Reasons are that Scenic Eclipse is brand new (Launched in late 2019) with all balcony staterooms, of similar price, and most importantly are equipped with helicopters and submarines. I must say I am very lucky to have taken this exciting adventure on the Scenic ship, not to mention just before the Coronavirus hit. Everything, especially service, was first-class on the Scenic ship. My next expedition cruise will be the Arctic Polar region. I have thought about other alternatives such as Viking’s brand new expedition ships, but I think I shall most likely take Scenic. No expedition cruise is complete without helicopter and submarine rides. BTW - I took the 18-day Antarctica cruise including Falklands Islands and South Georgia. Attached photos were taken aboard the luxury helicopter (6-passenger + pilot).
  12. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated July 31st, 2020 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. 13. Full English on the buffet in Eclipse including the dastardly black pudding. I wasn't that fond of the snags though but the bacon was really good.
  14. I managed to get out last Saturday to our western wetlands spot at the edge of the Everglades, being the only spot open during pandemic times here...though I admit I have no idea why they feel they can't open all the wetlands parks - just restrict hours to noon to 7pm...I can bear witness that no more than 2-4 people will be willing to go out there in this heat and humidity, so social distancing is a breeze! Sandhill crane parent and colt feeding around a tree, ignoring me entirely: Some kind of wild swamp flower: An 'eclipse' male wood duck - wood duck males are among the most colorful and decorative duck there is - just after mating season, the male loses many of the fancy adornment feathers around his head and neck, and get this more pared down look, which is known as 'eclipse' coat: A large Florida softshell turtle up on the shore laying her eggs. I walked up on her in a very densely forested, overgrown trail...she raised her head to watch me, but I backed off into the branches to avoid disturbing her and stood for 10 minutes, not moving, and getting bitten by bugs, while she just stared at me to make sure I wasn't going to be a threat, finished her eggs, buried them, and walked back to the water: A green heron, catching a little shade under a small tree in the shallow water: Black bellied whistling duck family:
  15. Agree - I was just looking at a South Pacific cruise out of Sydney, Australia on the Celebrity Eclipse departing October 18, 2020 - I'm sure that won't be going anywhere.
  16. Shirley Heights I have the picture above blown up on canvas in my office at work. I found a friend! When we left the port area this morning, Larry had casually mentioned that it would be cool to get a picture of all 4 ships in port. Our taxi driver took us to the hospital on the way back to port so we could get photos of the ships. We were in port with Celebrity Eclipse, Costa Pacifica and MSC Fantasia. The hospital rooms have balconies overlooking the harbor.
  17. We are scheduled on a PG cruise - charter by Wilderness Travel - in Dec 2020 to see a complete solar eclipse WT sent out the new PG/Ponant guidelines https://www.pgcruises.com/travel-advisory https://en.calameo.com/read/000132423bdb3b0a1a579?authid=k4a19tLoX9rj Both are worth a read if you are on a PG/Ponant cruise in next 18 months or so The requirement for two covid tests - one to enter Tahiti and then one to get on the boat - and the time line almost makes it impossible unless PG sets up a testing station in Tahiti. Getting a reliable 72hr test in CA is getting hard to find so may be hard to get on a flight. Given that PG does not recommend going right from a flight to the boat the 48 hr test is almost impossible in that you get on in LA one afternoon - get into PPT in the am - spend that day in tour/hotel then afternoon transfer to ship. When do you get the <48 hr in advance test done and results - on checkin at LAX? Having a strong testing plan that is not logistically possible leads to "exclusions" and "exceptions" that add to risks not reduce them. Temperature checks have not been shown to help identify the biggest infectious issue which is asymptomatic carriers so I not a great fan of that screening option. Failed one in Las Vegas after a run - so a long walk from the Ferry terminal to the ship may keep us from getting on board -then what. PG/Ponant should provide a process for those denyed boarding. Having a luxury cruise program tell you that you are yoyo (your on your own) because you are too warm but have a negative PCR. The ship will be a kinda no fun zone with lots of difficulties with getting seats at dining, bars, lectures due to 50% occupancy requirements - perhaps they need to reduce total occupancy to 50% of cabins to prevent this issue. Luxury cruising is about being able to do what you want when you want - not having to pre schedule every lecture to early or late show or wonder if you will be turned away. I realize that you have to adapt in this time of the pandemic but maybe a better plan - PG/Ponant run a PCR test on everyone when the show up - if you are at one of their hotels (a day or two early ) then you do not have to quarantine in your cabin until your results come back. Then seal the boat and no one enters the bubble - tour guides for excursion come on the boat. No contract tours, No off the boat on your own. No interaction with the local populations - sorry - maybe they can workout contact free shopping. Then masks/social distancing would be unnecessary as the ship becomes a "team" for the duration of the cruise. Need a clear protocol if you cannot board - where you stay - how you get home etc. No perfect solution but we should also be give a choice to cancel if we do not like the new rules - We are also scrambling as we had planned three days in Moorea for a few extra days diving at the IC so now moved to the Manava Resort as they have a dive center. One interesting thing to note is that on the PG FAQ page it states that the scube dives will not be bookable on line but only on the boat on a first come first serve basis. While dives tended to sell out on the first day the excusions are offered on line now there will be a "fight" to get to the dive table on embarcation day.
  18. Lift and Shift has been a failure for me. I had a B2B2B2B booked starting Nov 10 and 2 of the 4 segments aren't eligible as there are no alternatives. The cruise was on Eclipse out of Singapore - They do not have any cruises from Singapore to Australia in 2021. I'm just about to start the cancellation process for all the cruises as I don't want to pay $30,000 plus only to deal with the hassel of trying to get FCC's. As it is I have more FCC's than I think I will be able to use in a year unless you can apply more than one per person to a cruise.
  19. Without any particular knowledge, but just what we think may happen, today we requested a lift & shift on our 4-Apr-21 Solstice cruise to Eclipse 26-Mar-22, both QLD coastal 11N. It may be that the Apr 2021 cruise happens, but we decided it was best to postpone, as we still have FCC for our cancelled Voyager 30-Mar-20 & our 5-Oct-20 music charter is still up in the air, most likely transferred to Oct/Nov 2021. With the selfish, crazy behavior of some, including those basking in the media (mainstream & social) spotlight, I see little likelihood of cruises resuming anytime soon - maybe here from Sept/Oct 2021 if all goes well??
  20. Did I miss a lot of posts that were removed?? I read jg51 and Lady Arwin posts and the responses to them and I haven’t seen insulting attacks. I’ve seen posts pointing out that there is a difference between opinion and fact, and what someone is comfortable with and what is needed to protect our communities. If you won’t wear a mask....stay home. I think I put in my initial post that personally, I’m not going on a cruise that requires wearing a mask in public areas.....not because I dont’ think it should be required, but because I’m not going to pay for a cruise and spend the majority of time in my SR or walk around in a mask. I’d do that if I chose to cruise, but I’ll wait. There is a big difference between stating that and going on and on about how masks hurt my ears. To be quite straightforward, no one cares what the ‘issues’ someone has with wearing a mask. My mother-in-law complained that seat belts put wrinkles in her blouses....I explained to her it was better than having her brain matter splattered all over her blouse. You can guess how well that went over!! And even if you think you need to stress some word or phrase or sentence, most of us quit reading when someone throws capital letters into their post. Put ‘Quotes’ around it or start it with a Capital Letter or whatever. enough. I’m sitting here sipping a Nice (Capital letter because it Is Nice!) Chardonnay and relaxing. But I do I do I do wish I was on the Eclipse enjoying it!! Den

  22. Hello, I am just beginning my research into an expedition cruise to Antarctica. We would like to go during the solar eclipse next year. I started looking into this yesterday in anticipation of our December 2020 South American solar eclipse being cancelled. Ocean Atlantic is one of the more affordable options. I would love to know how many landings per day you were able to do and also, would love to know about the food on board. My husband and I are both vegetarians. I am a little concerned that there won't be many food options for us on these tiny ships. I understand if you are not vegetarian, you may not have noticed if this was an issue. Many thanks for any guidance! I was looking at Hurtigruten but I see they only have one landing per day due to the large number of passengers.
  23. We cancelled our December 2020 cruise twice. Looking forward to our Alaska cruise and land tour next August and out B2B on Apex in 2022. We really splurged on these cruises, PH on Eclipse and Villa on Apex. We got good prices on both.
  24. Right now, 5pm on Tuesday, there is a thread on the first page of the Celebrity forum showing how the 4 Celebrity ships anchored off Coco Cay are getting & delivering Covid tests. Edge, Eclipse & Silhouette ... can't remember the 4th ... Just went back to find the link ... video is on page 3 of the thread
  25. Actually TUI are mainly a land based holiday company in the UK and the German TUI have a big presence in land holidays as well. The UK part was originally Thomson and kept on trading as such over here after TUI took over about 20 years ago now. The trade name of Thomson kept on for long time and the cruises they ran were also still known a Thomson cruises. The trade name TUI came in over here in recent years, then they decided to call their cruises Marella Cruises to prevent confusion with the German TUI Cruises. First Choice, another very big holiday company, was merged with them at some stage (not sure of business side of that) and the direct booking arm of both of those (Portland and Eclipse) were ditched by the company. There have also been links with other brands, including a more up market one with tailor made packages and exotic tours (Hayes and Jarvis) that came and went a few years later. So TUI is certainly is a big company with a lot of travel agency branches as well. Since Thomas Cook went down, it is the only really big, well known, company offering mass market holidays and I have no reason to think they are in a bad way business wise. They are certainly causing a lot of people a whole lot of grief mind. At least their land holidays are now starting off again, albeit slowly with a lot of holidays still being cancelled. Our Tui Spanish holiday for November has now been cancelled (thankfully as we did not want to go), so with CMV as well, we have now lost two holidays in 2 days with different companies. Looks like we can re book our land holiday and our insurance company will let us retain full insurance for COVID (even for cancellation), so we are thinking of doing that, perhaps for next spring in the hope we can be vaccinated by then, but will choose a holiday in a quiet location which would not be too much of a risk if restrictions still in place. Yes sad about CMV, and particularly for all the people who will loose their jobs because of it, but it was looking a mammouth task for them to keep going, as cruises do not look like they are going anywhere much for some time. I wonder when Fred will publish his future cruise plans and what they will be - definitely a watch this space job. Cheers, Barbara
