  1. Well, it’s just that some of us really love to cruise and perhaps against our better judgement still hope we can do so again soon. This would be the fourth cruise this year that I have canceled or had canceled. Celebrity Eclipse in March, Seabourn Ovation in May, and Regent Seven Seas Mariner in Oct. Fortunate not to have lost any money in any of these cruises and don’t intend to with this crystal cruise either. Two cruise booked for next April and Dec. Time will tell.
  2. 10 years ago, Celebrity Eclipse postponed her naming ceremony in Southampton, and set off on a rescue mission to repatriate tourists stuck in Spain due to the volcano eruption 🌋 cancelling flights.
  3. I seem to recall that Celebrity have some decent prices from Southampton to the fjords. We have been on silhouette and Eclipse. They are nice ships, standard is better than P&O. We are booked on Eclipse in Alaska next June. Sadly Gary won't be aboard.😁
  4. I looked up the Celebrity Eclipse, which is the ship that sailed in Antarctica this year. They have a certificate that is valid from March of 2020 to April 2021. Is it possible they are doing the Polar certificates annually? Celebrity uses different ships for that run from year to year (was Infinity, then Eclipse, now Silhouette)?
  5. Eclipse scheduled to end our voyage in Santiago Chili this morning has been denied entrance to the port. Currently offshore making circles. Next update scheduled for about 90 minutes.
  6. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated July 10th, 2020 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 7. I've made my view clear on Apex a number of times and with Europe starting (fingers cross) to get this thing under control I'm still of a view that Europe will start up first. Interestingly these have been a number of comments to imply that the ships are now in their start up positions. It seems logical to me that Apex, Constellation, infinity will ultimately stay in Europe and probably restart FULL cruising at the start of the 2021 Europe season on the Spring. That's not to say that, if things improve, they will not do some of the 2020 late Summer cruises but given the problems with getting Americans over, only thing Southampton could justify a restart this fall. The UK currently does not ban Americans but does require a quarantine. Critical however is the number of local passengers and Southampton has more "drive to" passengers than any other Europe port. Hence I think Apex might do some of the Southampton Silhouette late Summer sailings. Over the pond things don't look good. Short cruises will. in my opinion, be the order of the day. So the infinity fall programme is likely to be the first to start. But it would be a waste of money to bring her over from the med so my guess is the the these will be on Edge!! So hear goes Apex - Staying in Europe - starts FULL program in Spring 2021 - Does some of Silhouette Fall cruises out of Southampton starting late September Constellation - Cold layup in Med - Starts Europe program Spring 2021 - Or sold!! Infinity - Cold layup in Med - Starts Europe program Spring 2021 - Or sold!! Edge - First ship to restart in Caribbean - Will do the Infinity short duration Winter Season Equinox - Will restart Late 2020/Early 2021 on planned itinerary as longer cruises become acceptable Solstice - Will cover either her Asia Winter 2020/Spring 2021 cruises or Eclipse Australia dependent on demand and flight availability Millennium - Cold layup - restart Alaska season 2021 Eclipse - Cold layup - restart Alaska season 2021 Summit - Cold layup - restart North East Season Summer 2021 Reflection - Cold Layup - restart dependent on demand But could be Europe 2021 Silhouette - Europe 2020 and South America 2021/2021 cancelled - New short Caribbean cruises introduced starting Early 2021 Anyone agree!!
  8. We haven’t seen a new thread on the Scenic Eclipse lately so I will start this one. This is a 21 day repositioning cruise for the Eclipse from Buenos Aires to Lisbon with several interesting ports and 13 sea days. We chose this cruise for several reasons but the main reason was to see and enjoy the ship, sea days certainly allow for this! Based on the Scenic website I don’t believe we will have a full ship as most room categories are still available and Scenic is discounting the fare. The “less than fully booked” cruise should allow us to enjoy all of the dining venues during the 21 days but sometimes leads to a “quiet ship.” I would encourage anyone interested in cruising on the Eclipse to take advantage of the discounted fare and join us on this cruise. i don’t plan on doing a “live from” thread but will comment on anything I deem interesting as the cruise progresses. I also want to thank everyone that has posted information and pictures on cruises to date, they have been much appreciated and informative!!
  9. Ah, that explains the teakettle in our cabin on the Celebrity Eclipse out of Southampton as I mentioned above!
  10. We were booked on the last Celebrity Century sailing, Dubai to Rome, in April 2015, where she was to be refitted for Pullmantur. The previous September we were told that Century was to be redeployed early, to the Asia market. We were offered 3 replacement cruises. If we took one of those, our price would be protected, but as we didn’t want to go from Dubai to India or return, we booked a Baltic sailing on Eclipse and took $200 OBC.
  11. My view this morning: Eclipse still in port. Haven't seen any news today about what will happen with the South Americans who haven't been permitted to disembark from Eclipse. Millennium is here for previously scheduled resupply.
  12. Jul 7, 1991 Jubilee (Carnival) sailing, 7 Night Mexican Riviera from Los Angeles I am violating the OP's rules and am posting a photo from a non-Celebrity cruise taken nearly 30 years ago. My wife for a couple of years after we got married had suggested that we go on a cruise. I had no interest in doing that. But in 1991, Carnival Jubilee's scheduled sailing on Jul 7 out of San Pedro was coincidentally going to be in the path of a total solar eclipse when it called on Mazatlan, Mexico on Jul 11. Moreover, Mazatlan was going to be very close to the location of the maximum duration of totality of 6 min 53 sec! There will not be another total solar eclipse exceeding that until 2132. In contrast, the Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017 had a maximum duration of less than 2 min 40 sec. Because I was an avid amateur astronomer, she was easily able to convince me to book this cruise. All of the passengers who booked the cruise were there for the solar eclipse. It included many organized astronomy tour groups. Buzz Aldrin and his wife were also on board as guest speakers (see comments in this article) arranged thru one of the tour groups (not thru the ship). Once our cruise began, the tour leaders asked for a meeting with the ship's master, Captain Gallo, which took place at Churchill's Library. Jubilee was scheduled to dock at Mazatlan from about 9am to 4pm (my memory is a bit foggy here). The tour leaders asked that the itinerary be modified so that Jubilee would be out at sea when the total eclipse occurred at high noon in order to take advantage of the ship's mobility to avoid clouds from ruining the eclipse. The Captain agreed and all passengers received a notice two nights before we were scheduled to arrive at Mazatlan saying that the ship was now scheduled to delay its arrival at Mazatlan until 1 pm to allow it to hang out at sea to watch the eclipse. This created an uproar with another set of passengers who were planning on taking a private shore excursion to allow them to set up their telescopes and photography equipment on land because they needed a stable platform that land provided. The ship's motion at sea would blur their photographs. So on the night before our scheduled stop at Mazatlan, another notice from Captain Gallo was placed in everyone's staterooms. The Captain acknowledged the need for some passengers to see the eclipse from land and so, incredibly, he announced that we would dock twice at Mazatlan. Jubilee would dock first at about 9am to allow those passengers who wanted to get off the ship a chance to do so. Jubilee would then sail out to sea at 11am to search for clear skies to watch the eclipse. And then Jubilee would come back to Mazatlan at 2pm to pick up any passengers who went ashore and leave at 4pm. My wife and I decided to take our chances with being on the ship even though my telescope and camera set up would be affected by the ship's motion. We figured it was more important to guarantee that we could see our first total solar eclipse than to get a great photograph. I got up early in the morning to stake out a spot on the ship's public deck to set up my telescope (I didn't know what a chair hog was back then and so i dutifully sat at that spot the whole time). The early morning weather looked ominously bad as it was cloudy and we even saw a couple of waterspouts before the ship docked at Mazatlan. By the time we headed back out to sea, the skies were partly cloudy and Captain Gallo was able to guide Jubilee to a spot for us to watch the magnificent total solar eclipse. The solar corona was very large and there were two bright neon pink solar prominences that could easily be seen. It is a sight I will never forget. As soon as totality was over, Jubilee began sailing towards Mazatlan, and suddenly a group of dolphins began swimming and jumping along side us as if to celebrate the celestial event. The reason I am posting this eclipse photo today is to alert everyone that there is another total solar eclipse visible from North America 4 years from this month. On April 8, 2024, the moon's shadow will once again re-visit Mazatlan and it will head north east to Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Montreal. It will even visit Paducah KY where my family and I observed the total solar eclipse of Aug 2017.
  13. Ok some thoughts only for what they are worth (but if too much for this board just feel free to go to the links or just move to the next post. I will try to put this in context of this current thread on vaccines for cruising. I would refer you to the US CDC site for more complete information on AB testing that was recently updated June 30. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/testing/serology-overview.html 1) Validity of AB Test Results: Early on there were a lot of AB tests rushed into production and to the states and providers out of necessity. Then the FDA stepped in and created tough validation procedures and required all manufacturers to submit data. A number of tests were pulled from the market. Some, like the ones from the Abbot high throughput analyzer, were deemed very reliable. This has become widely used and I know Labcorp uses this. So that's why I personally chose Labcorp for my test. If getting an AB test then check what instrument and labs are doing the tests. See this from the US FDA for the best info: https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/letters-health-care-providers/certain-covid-19-serologyantibody-tests-should-not-be-used-letter-clinical-laboratory-staff-and 2) Antibody type: After SARS-CoV-2 infection, in symptomatic people anyway (not clear about asymptomatic), people get an immediate IgM response but then within two weeks the antibodies are converted in a normal process to longer lasting IgG antibodies. That is what the AB tests are measuring these days. But they might not be detectable until two weeks post initial infection. That is why the nasal swab PCR test (viral RNA) is mostly used to diagnose early symptoms in most places. 3) Longevity of IgG antibodies: Studies are all over the place on this and a lot more data is needed for conclusions. Perhaps two weeks to 4 months? Perhaps longer? I thought I had the virus back in mid-January on Celebrity Eclipse by the symptoms I exhibited. But I tested negative mid-June for antibodies. Either I did not have the virus or my IgG antibodies were gone already. 4) Neutralizing Antibodies: Post infection, you might or might not develop neutralizing antibodies which protect against future infections. A lot a data needs to be assessed for this in the coming months. 5) Vaccine Response: If neutralizing antibodies are important for viral protection, then an effective vaccine should produce these at a significant level - most likely higher than seen in COVID-19 infected patients. It is entirely possible that at least two vaccine doses (or more) over a period of time might be required for this. Problematic for early return to cruising. 6) Other Immune Responses: Even if you have been infected (or vaccinated) your circulating IgG antibodies will wane over time. But the good news is that a healthy immune system is primed to respond quickly if it sees the antigen (virus) again. It will start making specific antibodies and various types of T-cells pretty rapidly. This is what a vaccine (acquired immunity) is all about! But that is also why you might need booster doses. 7) Other: Viruses replicate inside of cells so a T-cell response is also generated along with components called cytokines. This might control your virus even if you become infected or infected again. A very effective vaccine will likely produce both antibodies and T-Cell responses. These are all being measured in current vaccine clinical trials. Note that there is some evidence of a "cytokine storm" in some very severe COVID patients which is quite serious so a lot of this needs to be looked at in detail for a safe vaccine approach.
  14. I was wondering if anyone has stayed on Celebrity Eclipse cabins 8234,8236 and 8238? I'm planning on a cruise out of Sydney Australia on April 17 2022 for my retirement cruise. There are going to be 2 couples traveling with us and our plan is to book the above cabins. They are hump cabins and it appears that they have the bed the extra bed that hangs down from the wall (which we will not be using). There are 2 per cabin in our group. Does anyone have any reviews comments (good or bad) on these cabins. I know it's a ways out (I've been looking for quite a while), but I was wondering your thoughts. Our TA stated that there is an over hang on the balconies with is good for shade or rain but I was wondering about how it looks. Pictures are wonderful. I've also seen videos of some of the different cabins on the ship. I've noticed that the bed is pretty tight along the bottom near the wall but I don't think that would be a issue for us. Any ideas? Thanks!
  15. So we are on a Wilderness Travel PG chartered cruise in Dec. It is to view a Solar Eclipse - Had the resevation for almost two years. We were presented with the new rules for cruising with Ponant (it is clear they are running the post Covid system) and it is quite restrictive. We had planned a 3 days in Moorea before the cruise (got great miles based business seats on AF so had to adjust a day or so) then on board. We will need two Covid test to meet the Tahiti and Ponant rules. Also it apears that there is a super secret doctor clearance 30 days before. There are also quite restrictive rules on board to prevent Covid transmisssion even though you have to be negative to get on board. Do not completely understand that issue but... At his point I think the experience will be very un luxury cruise like but .... WT was told the cruise was going and at this point they could not be sure if we did not want to go what the refund if any would be. I think that PG/Ponant need to be a lot more customer friendly or risk the reaction I have been reading so far. Has anyone else reviewed the PG/Ponant manifesto for cruising on PG? Am I over reacting? Looking for some other views on the new PG rules https://www.pgcruises.com/travel-advisory https://en.calameo.com/read/000132423bdb3b0a1a579?authid=k4a19tLoX9rj Manifesto from PG We had a great cruise two years ago and were looking forward to this trip so this is really about management rules and not the crew or the ship
  16. Eclipse is docked next to Disney Wonder. Haven't seen any reports yet about disembarkation status.
  17. We did a Mediterranean cruise out of Southampton a few years on Celebrity Eclipse and our cabin had an electric teakettle, etc. It was on the already-too-small desk so a real inconvenience for us non-tea drinkers. I never thought to ask them to remove it.
  18. Below are some additional quotes that might help: ”Passengers, who were generally older than crew members, died in greater numbers than crew members, with 21 passenger deaths versus 12 crew deaths, according to the CDC, the agency that looks out for the health of Americans. The data, which covered 121 vessels, came from cruise-line reports and public health officials’ counts and covered the period from March 1 to June 23, for what the CDC described as ships in the U.S. jurisdiction, though not always in U.S. waters. Some cases of infection on cruise ships, identified when people returned to their home countries, didn’t appear to have been included, according to the Journal’s analysis. Of those on the CDC’s list, the ships with the most confirmed cases of Covid-19 and Covid-like illness, combined, according to the data, wereDisney DIS -0.90% Cruise Line’s Wonder and four Carnival Corp.CCL -2.72% ships: the Zaandam, the Grand Princess, the Valor and the Coral Princess. Together, they accounted for more than one-third of the CDC’s total of confirmed and possible cases, at 990 of 2,902. The five ships with the most confirmed Covid-19 cases were the Wonder, the Grand Princess, the Valor, Royal Caribbean Cruises ’ Celebrity Eclipse and Carnival Corp.’s Freedom, according to the data. The most deaths were tied to the Grand Princess, the Zaandam and the Coral Princess according to the CDC, with a total of 17 passenger deaths and three crew deaths, or 20 out of 33 fatalities overall, the data indicates. The data excludes hundreds of ships with itineraries outside the U.S., including some with significant Covid-19 outbreaks, such as the Diamond Princess and Ruby Princess, whose problems surfaced in Japan and Australia, respectively.“

  20. Well I just took a look at the Celebrity website, we are beginning t consider postponing our trip. We thought a "lift and shift" would work but it looks like the Eclipse will not be doing the Auckland to Melbourne route, as a matter of fact there doesn't seem to be an Auckland to Melbourne route in 2022. It looks like Eclipse is the single Celebrity ship in the region for 2022 and Sydney seems to be the home port not Melbourne. We probably won't be able to do the shift even if we decided to🤔
  21. Beautiful! We never sailed on the Eclipse..hopefully someday if she comes to the east coast of U.S. Anyone have updates on Connie location and plans?

  23. A break from all the virus threads. Currently on the Eclipse, coming around Cape Horn on Sunday. Weather forecast shows probable E-ticket ride! Google cape weather. For us, lovng it. IMHO, anyone not prepared for big weather shouldn't do the horn! (Bucket list trip).
  24. As I see it the fjordland part of the cruise is probably the highlight, so I think that should be a major consideration. We like the Eclipse so I think will try to stick with her. Unfortunately she is showing Sydney as her home port so we may have to change the order of our Oz adventure. The new plan would have us fly into Auckland and cruise to Sydney spend a few days there then fly to Melbourne and do our self drive tour then fly back to Auckland for the direct flight home. Of course this all depends on Air New Zealand reinstating the Vancouver to Auckland direct flight.
  25. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated July 3rd, 2020 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on.
