  1. I've having a hard time comparing them in terms of the physical layout.
  2. 10 years ago, Celebrity Eclipse postponed her naming ceremony in Southampton, and set off on a rescue mission to repatriate tourists stuck in Spain due to the volcano eruption 🌋 cancelling flights.
  3. Eclipse scheduled to end our voyage in Santiago Chili this morning has been denied entrance to the port. Currently offshore making circles. Next update scheduled for about 90 minutes.
  4. We haven’t seen a new thread on the Scenic Eclipse lately so I will start this one. This is a 21 day repositioning cruise for the Eclipse from Buenos Aires to Lisbon with several interesting ports and 13 sea days. We chose this cruise for several reasons but the main reason was to see and enjoy the ship, sea days certainly allow for this! Based on the Scenic website I don’t believe we will have a full ship as most room categories are still available and Scenic is discounting the fare. The “less than fully booked” cruise should allow us to enjoy all of the dining venues during the 21 days but sometimes leads to a “quiet ship.” I would encourage anyone interested in cruising on the Eclipse to take advantage of the discounted fare and join us on this cruise. i don’t plan on doing a “live from” thread but will comment on anything I deem interesting as the cruise progresses. I also want to thank everyone that has posted information and pictures on cruises to date, they have been much appreciated and informative!!
  5. Without any particular knowledge, but just what we think may happen, today we requested a lift & shift on our 4-Apr-21 Solstice cruise to Eclipse 26-Mar-22, both QLD coastal 11N. It may be that the Apr 2021 cruise happens, but we decided it was best to postpone, as we still have FCC for our cancelled Voyager 30-Mar-20 & our 5-Oct-20 music charter is still up in the air, most likely transferred to Oct/Nov 2021. With the selfish, crazy behavior of some, including those basking in the media (mainstream & social) spotlight, I see little likelihood of cruises resuming anytime soon - maybe here from Sept/Oct 2021 if all goes well??
  6. My view this morning: Eclipse still in port. Haven't seen any news today about what will happen with the South Americans who haven't been permitted to disembark from Eclipse. Millennium is here for previously scheduled resupply.
  7. Did I miss a lot of posts that were removed?? I read jg51 and Lady Arwin posts and the responses to them and I haven’t seen insulting attacks. I’ve seen posts pointing out that there is a difference between opinion and fact, and what someone is comfortable with and what is needed to protect our communities. If you won’t wear a mask....stay home. I think I put in my initial post that personally, I’m not going on a cruise that requires wearing a mask in public areas.....not because I dont’ think it should be required, but because I’m not going to pay for a cruise and spend the majority of time in my SR or walk around in a mask. I’d do that if I chose to cruise, but I’ll wait. There is a big difference between stating that and going on and on about how masks hurt my ears. To be quite straightforward, no one cares what the ‘issues’ someone has with wearing a mask. My mother-in-law complained that seat belts put wrinkles in her blouses....I explained to her it was better than having her brain matter splattered all over her blouse. You can guess how well that went over!! And even if you think you need to stress some word or phrase or sentence, most of us quit reading when someone throws capital letters into their post. Put ‘Quotes’ around it or start it with a Capital Letter or whatever. enough. I’m sitting here sipping a Nice (Capital letter because it Is Nice!) Chardonnay and relaxing. But I do I do I do wish I was on the Eclipse enjoying it!! Den
  8. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated July 17th, 2020 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 9. Jul 7, 1991 Jubilee (Carnival) sailing, 7 Night Mexican Riviera from Los Angeles I am violating the OP's rules and am posting a photo from a non-Celebrity cruise taken nearly 30 years ago. My wife for a couple of years after we got married had suggested that we go on a cruise. I had no interest in doing that. But in 1991, Carnival Jubilee's scheduled sailing on Jul 7 out of San Pedro was coincidentally going to be in the path of a total solar eclipse when it called on Mazatlan, Mexico on Jul 11. Moreover, Mazatlan was going to be very close to the location of the maximum duration of totality of 6 min 53 sec! There will not be another total solar eclipse exceeding that until 2132. In contrast, the Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017 had a maximum duration of less than 2 min 40 sec. Because I was an avid amateur astronomer, she was easily able to convince me to book this cruise. All of the passengers who booked the cruise were there for the solar eclipse. It included many organized astronomy tour groups. Buzz Aldrin and his wife were also on board as guest speakers (see comments in this article) arranged thru one of the tour groups (not thru the ship). Once our cruise began, the tour leaders asked for a meeting with the ship's master, Captain Gallo, which took place at Churchill's Library. Jubilee was scheduled to dock at Mazatlan from about 9am to 4pm (my memory is a bit foggy here). The tour leaders asked that the itinerary be modified so that Jubilee would be out at sea when the total eclipse occurred at high noon in order to take advantage of the ship's mobility to avoid clouds from ruining the eclipse. The Captain agreed and all passengers received a notice two nights before we were scheduled to arrive at Mazatlan saying that the ship was now scheduled to delay its arrival at Mazatlan until 1 pm to allow it to hang out at sea to watch the eclipse. This created an uproar with another set of passengers who were planning on taking a private shore excursion to allow them to set up their telescopes and photography equipment on land because they needed a stable platform that land provided. The ship's motion at sea would blur their photographs. So on the night before our scheduled stop at Mazatlan, another notice from Captain Gallo was placed in everyone's staterooms. The Captain acknowledged the need for some passengers to see the eclipse from land and so, incredibly, he announced that we would dock twice at Mazatlan. Jubilee would dock first at about 9am to allow those passengers who wanted to get off the ship a chance to do so. Jubilee would then sail out to sea at 11am to search for clear skies to watch the eclipse. And then Jubilee would come back to Mazatlan at 2pm to pick up any passengers who went ashore and leave at 4pm. My wife and I decided to take our chances with being on the ship even though my telescope and camera set up would be affected by the ship's motion. We figured it was more important to guarantee that we could see our first total solar eclipse than to get a great photograph. I got up early in the morning to stake out a spot on the ship's public deck to set up my telescope (I didn't know what a chair hog was back then and so i dutifully sat at that spot the whole time). The early morning weather looked ominously bad as it was cloudy and we even saw a couple of waterspouts before the ship docked at Mazatlan. By the time we headed back out to sea, the skies were partly cloudy and Captain Gallo was able to guide Jubilee to a spot for us to watch the magnificent total solar eclipse. The solar corona was very large and there were two bright neon pink solar prominences that could easily be seen. It is a sight I will never forget. As soon as totality was over, Jubilee began sailing towards Mazatlan, and suddenly a group of dolphins began swimming and jumping along side us as if to celebrate the celestial event. The reason I am posting this eclipse photo today is to alert everyone that there is another total solar eclipse visible from North America 4 years from this month. On April 8, 2024, the moon's shadow will once again re-visit Mazatlan and it will head north east to Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Montreal. It will even visit Paducah KY where my family and I observed the total solar eclipse of Aug 2017.
  10. I was wondering if anyone has stayed on Celebrity Eclipse cabins 8234,8236 and 8238? I'm planning on a cruise out of Sydney Australia on April 17 2022 for my retirement cruise. There are going to be 2 couples traveling with us and our plan is to book the above cabins. They are hump cabins and it appears that they have the bed the extra bed that hangs down from the wall (which we will not be using). There are 2 per cabin in our group. Does anyone have any reviews comments (good or bad) on these cabins. I know it's a ways out (I've been looking for quite a while), but I was wondering your thoughts. Our TA stated that there is an over hang on the balconies with is good for shade or rain but I was wondering about how it looks. Pictures are wonderful. I've also seen videos of some of the different cabins on the ship. I've noticed that the bed is pretty tight along the bottom near the wall but I don't think that would be a issue for us. Any ideas? Thanks!
  11. Eclipse is docked next to Disney Wonder. Haven't seen any reports yet about disembarkation status.
  12. While this could start some strong debates, perhaps it is time for those of us that regularly sail on luxury and/or premium/premium plus cruise lines to list what YOU think belongs in the “Luxury” or “Premium Plus” category. The intent of this thread is to help people that may be considering one of these cruise lines. You don’t have to prove that the category that you place a cruise line in is correct - only that you believe that it is. It would be helpful if you posted why you feel the cruise line belongs in the category (think that we should not posted cruise lines that have not launched their ships yet such as Scenic Eclipse and Ritz Carlton. Obviously, I’ll start: In alphabetical order: Luxury Crystal Hapag Lloyd (German speaking) Regent Seadream Yacht Club Seabourn Silverea Luxury/Premium Plus Azamara Oceania Viking Ocean

  14. We cancelled our December 2020 cruise twice. Looking forward to our Alaska cruise and land tour next August and out B2B on Apex in 2022. We really splurged on these cruises, PH on Eclipse and Villa on Apex. We got good prices on both.
  15. Right now, 5pm on Tuesday, there is a thread on the first page of the Celebrity forum showing how the 4 Celebrity ships anchored off Coco Cay are getting & delivering Covid tests. Edge, Eclipse & Silhouette ... can't remember the 4th ... Just went back to find the link ... video is on page 3 of the thread
  16. I seem to recall that Celebrity have some decent prices from Southampton to the fjords. We have been on silhouette and Eclipse. They are nice ships, standard is better than P&O. We are booked on Eclipse in Alaska next June. Sadly Gary won't be aboard.😁
  17. I looked up the Celebrity Eclipse, which is the ship that sailed in Antarctica this year. They have a certificate that is valid from March of 2020 to April 2021. Is it possible they are doing the Polar certificates annually? Celebrity uses different ships for that run from year to year (was Infinity, then Eclipse, now Silhouette)?
  18. I've made my view clear on Apex a number of times and with Europe starting (fingers cross) to get this thing under control I'm still of a view that Europe will start up first. Interestingly these have been a number of comments to imply that the ships are now in their start up positions. It seems logical to me that Apex, Constellation, infinity will ultimately stay in Europe and probably restart FULL cruising at the start of the 2021 Europe season on the Spring. That's not to say that, if things improve, they will not do some of the 2020 late Summer cruises but given the problems with getting Americans over, only thing Southampton could justify a restart this fall. The UK currently does not ban Americans but does require a quarantine. Critical however is the number of local passengers and Southampton has more "drive to" passengers than any other Europe port. Hence I think Apex might do some of the Southampton Silhouette late Summer sailings. Over the pond things don't look good. Short cruises will. in my opinion, be the order of the day. So the infinity fall programme is likely to be the first to start. But it would be a waste of money to bring her over from the med so my guess is the the these will be on Edge!! So hear goes Apex - Staying in Europe - starts FULL program in Spring 2021 - Does some of Silhouette Fall cruises out of Southampton starting late September Constellation - Cold layup in Med - Starts Europe program Spring 2021 - Or sold!! Infinity - Cold layup in Med - Starts Europe program Spring 2021 - Or sold!! Edge - First ship to restart in Caribbean - Will do the Infinity short duration Winter Season Equinox - Will restart Late 2020/Early 2021 on planned itinerary as longer cruises become acceptable Solstice - Will cover either her Asia Winter 2020/Spring 2021 cruises or Eclipse Australia dependent on demand and flight availability Millennium - Cold layup - restart Alaska season 2021 Eclipse - Cold layup - restart Alaska season 2021 Summit - Cold layup - restart North East Season Summer 2021 Reflection - Cold Layup - restart dependent on demand But could be Europe 2021 Silhouette - Europe 2020 and South America 2021/2021 cancelled - New short Caribbean cruises introduced starting Early 2021 Anyone agree!!
  19. Actually TUI are mainly a land based holiday company in the UK and the German TUI have a big presence in land holidays as well. The UK part was originally Thomson and kept on trading as such over here after TUI took over about 20 years ago now. The trade name of Thomson kept on for long time and the cruises they ran were also still known a Thomson cruises. The trade name TUI came in over here in recent years, then they decided to call their cruises Marella Cruises to prevent confusion with the German TUI Cruises. First Choice, another very big holiday company, was merged with them at some stage (not sure of business side of that) and the direct booking arm of both of those (Portland and Eclipse) were ditched by the company. There have also been links with other brands, including a more up market one with tailor made packages and exotic tours (Hayes and Jarvis) that came and went a few years later. So TUI is certainly is a big company with a lot of travel agency branches as well. Since Thomas Cook went down, it is the only really big, well known, company offering mass market holidays and I have no reason to think they are in a bad way business wise. They are certainly causing a lot of people a whole lot of grief mind. At least their land holidays are now starting off again, albeit slowly with a lot of holidays still being cancelled. Our Tui Spanish holiday for November has now been cancelled (thankfully as we did not want to go), so with CMV as well, we have now lost two holidays in 2 days with different companies. Looks like we can re book our land holiday and our insurance company will let us retain full insurance for COVID (even for cancellation), so we are thinking of doing that, perhaps for next spring in the hope we can be vaccinated by then, but will choose a holiday in a quiet location which would not be too much of a risk if restrictions still in place. Yes sad about CMV, and particularly for all the people who will loose their jobs because of it, but it was looking a mammouth task for them to keep going, as cruises do not look like they are going anywhere much for some time. I wonder when Fred will publish his future cruise plans and what they will be - definitely a watch this space job. Cheers, Barbara
  20. A break from all the virus threads. Currently on the Eclipse, coming around Cape Horn on Sunday. Weather forecast shows probable E-ticket ride! Google cape weather. For us, lovng it. IMHO, anyone not prepared for big weather shouldn't do the horn! (Bucket list trip).

  22. We are on the Celebrity Eclipse five-day Pacific Coastal and the following nine-day Alaskan cruise. Both leave out of Vancouver. This is about as low stress with a service dog as you can get. All you need is an Aphis Form 7001 (without endorsement) and a current rabies certificate. Since all of the ports are in the US or British Columbia, you are covered by either the ADA or the BC service dog law which is very similar.
  23. They are both still in San Diego area, Eclipse at anchor and Millennium doing a circle and heading back there.
  24. Did Millennium and Eclipse leave San Diego? does anyone know where they are now?
  25. Well, it’s just that some of us really love to cruise and perhaps against our better judgement still hope we can do so again soon. This would be the fourth cruise this year that I have canceled or had canceled. Celebrity Eclipse in March, Seabourn Ovation in May, and Regent Seven Seas Mariner in Oct. Fortunate not to have lost any money in any of these cruises and don’t intend to with this crystal cruise either. Two cruise booked for next April and Dec. Time will tell.
