  1. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated August 16th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 2. Eurodam 7 day to Alaska August 10, 2019 My wife and I decided to take a cruise for our 15th anniversary leaving the kids with grandparents for the week. This is our story. Before the Cruise We had initially booked and fully paid almost a year ago for an N interior room at $699/ea. By the time two months before sailing rolled around I saw prices had dropped significantly for the trip so I called up the booking company and managed to get upgraded first to a HH then to an E outside stateroom. I almost had the chance for a guarantee verandah for $50 but the best deal that I could actually get an offer on was $80 for a Guarantee Verandah. I decided the room we had was fine. If we didn’t need to have everything set up for kids it would have been $200 cheaper to book about a month out than what we ended up with. Something to know for the future. Arrival, embarkation We arrived at 10:30 am dropped off by my inlaws and our bags were promptly picked up by a porter. We wandered over to the terminal where there was a huge line that almost reached to the outside of the terminal. It turns out this was the line for dropping off luggage, which we avoided by having tags made ahead of time and using the porter outside. We went up to the desk and got all squared away in under 20 minutes from showing up at the terminal to being at the gate. We were in boarding group C and we didn't start boarding until 11:30 so we had a bit of a wait but once boarding started we were on the ship by 11:40 and our rooms were ready at 11:45. Our First Room The outside view room we were assigned was 1126 which seemed perfectly fine. Generally speaking the room had everything we needed. The window was totally sufficient for looking out and viewing the whales that passed by the early on the second morning. I'd have had no problem staying in the room assuming everything worked as expected. There was a little wear on the wood coverings on the desk and tables which made everything feel a little dated but there were plenty lots of outlets (all located at the desk) and USB plugs on the nightstands and on the desk, most of which worked. The room is shower only which is actually pretty nice as the bathroom feels bigger than shower bath combos and we didn't have any plans to use the bath. The Problem I had read a post from 2015 saying that the air conditioning in the room didn't work. I'd figured that through dry docks and several years passing this wouldn't be a problem. I was wrong. It was still broken. Now this is on a Holland America ship and the vast majority of passengers would likely not have a problem with a room that could only cool down to 72.5F. But this was the lowest possible temperature after several adjustments. We initially reported it the first night. They checked it and gave us a fan. The fan really did help the second night and the room was workable at that point but the next day we were in the BB King Blues area and the AC there was in full swing and we were suddenly comfortable. This made me realize that the issues we were having in our room weren't just a matter of cruise ships being hot in general (which it was) so I continued to bring this up with guest services. Eventually, after bringing down one of the technical managers who determined that they couldn't fix it we were offered a change in rooms. When I walked into the new room it was actually a comfortable temperature which felt like a godsend at that point. Our Second Stateroom We got upgraded to a VB 4045 which was an extended balcony verandah. Considering we had paid rock bottom prices the upgrade was amazing. Still the best feature of this room for us was working AC but being able to watch the glaciers in Glacier Bay from the verandah was nice. Otherwise the room was incredibly similar to the old room. I did have to ask guest services to push the beds together which they did promptly, however, while doing so they also turned up the heat in the room all the way. I caught it pretty quick because I was only out of the room for about 30 minutes while this was going on. More funny than anything else. The room is right by the forward elevators which had more traffic than our room down in the back but nothing problematic. Just more likely to hear stateroom doors opening and closing at some points. Having had a verandah I'm not sure that I would need one in the future assuming we had working AC but having a window that you can open and close seemed useful after our AC challenge. Entertainment Overall most of the entertainment was fine but in no way outstanding. Vince, the Travel director, was really good onstage. It took us multiple shows to realize that he had a teleprompter since he felt so natural. The Captain's Toast which came with free champagne, was interesting and fun as was the kitchen tour where I got to meet the executive chef and get an advance peek at the upcoming dinner menu. I was hoping to be able to do the America's Test Kitchen classes, the ones that cost extra, but only one was offered all week, there was a waiting list which was reserved for 5 star mariners for the first 24 hours and it was an Egg class which I wasn't at all interested in. The actual onboard cooking sessions weren't great. We decided we'd stop by for the recipe cards and watch old episodes of the show in our state room, which we did plenty. The mainstage entertainment wasn't anything special. The BBC Alaska that we thought was the symphony was just an audio track which was really just an unimpressive discovery channel special. The dancers putting on a show called Humanity had a cool gimmick but it wasn't executed to the level that it was exciting to watch for the entire 45 minutes. Their second show Stages was really fun, as was the Crew Show. The comedian was good fun for both of his sessions. Instead of many of the onboard options we spent time in our room watching movies like Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, Crimes of Grindewald, Rampage, and Jurassic World 3. We ended up skipping the magic show due to a two and a half hour dinner at Tamarind (more on that below). Food We had dinner in the main dining room every night, except for one, which was always great. Little tip: if you can wait until after 7pm the crowd dies down significantly and it's way more chill. We had one server named Jeffery who was awesome. He even found us in the morning on the lido and had a table for us in the Canaletto area. Food there was solid everytime we had it. Some requested customizations never happened but nothing that was too significant. Every time we ate there we left feeling pleasantly satiated without being stuffed which was a great experience for a three course meal. The Lido was frequently crowded for breakfast at around 8:30-9am but was generally pretty empty by 9:30 and wasn't as bad at 8am either. We decided to try to avoid the busy time there. Busy times for lunch were unpredictable due to schedule of events and docking times but we had to make multiple trips to find a seat after viewing the Margerie Glacier. Afternoon tea was a bit of a cattle call with no customization and very little attention paid to each guest. After going once we decided to avoid it for the future. Though several of the little bites there were great, having tea seemed unnecessary when the entire Lido was still open. Fine Dining We had one meal at Tamarind which was incredibly disappointing. Several of the dishes were great but even with the restaurant half empty it took two and a half hours to get through the meal, our water glasses ran empty multiple times, and we never really seemed to get service. They totally drenched the lobster roll I ordered in Mayo which wasn't even listed as an ingredient on the menu and I brought it up with 3 servers who never did anything but apologize. No offers to take it away or get something else. My wife ended up eating most of it but about half was taken away at the end untouched. I never leave sushi on the plate. This has pretty much turned me off of specialty dining entirely. I wouldn't have been happy paying $50 for that dinner and service in a restaurant under regular circumstances. The fact that I had to pay extra for lower quality service and in some cases worse food than the Lido is unacceptable. In the future I'm perfectly happy with the MDR. Service was also incredibly slow. Ports We didn't plan any excursions at port as we were hoping to explore on our own. This may have been a mistake. Juneau was heavily inundated with Cruise Port jewelry shops, places with locations in major cruise ports in Alaska and the Carribbean with locally themed swag. If you weren't looking for jewelry or something with the words ALASKA on it, you were probably out of luck. The entire area by the port is a big tourist trap with a number of the rudest sales reps I’ve ever met. I did manage to walk far enough to get to some local shops, local artists, and local native wears, but it was a few blocks back away from the main drag. Sitka was a pretty cool small town that reminded us of Friday Harbor in the San Juans. Having more time helped but we managed to hit the entire downtown in just a couple hours. I don’t have any particular drive to return to Sitka but it was pleasant being there. Kechikan seemed like a town I could spend more time in. The Creek Street area is super cool and I’d love to have time to hang out for coffee there. I really feel we didn’t have time to explore the area very well. As it was we spent a good 3+ hours wandering around there and came back at almost noon for a 12:30 departure. I wouldn't mind a fuller day there but the stop was pretty short. Victoria is a beautiful town that was somewhere I’ll definitely visit again, but our stop from 6 to 11 was too short to do much of anything. We walked to chinatown which looked like a cool place to eat but had nowhere to shop at 8pm. I’d love to explore the town more but there’s only so much still open at 7pm. I’d prefer to spend a long weekend in Victoria than a cruise stop. If I had another 5 hour stop there I probably wouldn’t get off the ship. In the end we decided we enjoyed our time cruising much more than our time in port. Watching the world go by outside of your window while relaxing, reading, and having access to unlimited food is pretty nice. Each of the stops didn’t really give us a chance to get more than a brief view of the town and we never stopped to eat or shop for local food since everything was free on the ship. If you really want to know what a place is like, cruising isn’t the best way to see it. In the future I think I’ll care less where the cruise stops and think about what I’d be seeing from the ship. Navigator App The Navigator App is a good development that hasn't really come together yet. First thing, don't register on it until you are on board. It just confuses the poor thing. Second, be careful because it doesn't update as quickly as you'd hope. I was still getting alerts in Seattle time while we were in Alaska for a few days and we still had the previous day’s menu until after dinner the next day. It's also fairly slow to load. That said, it's a pretty cool feature compared to nothing so I'd get it and use it onboard. Overall Cruising was a fun experience and pretty good for a couples getaway. Imaging the differences with kids takes away a lot of the potential relaxation that was present. The fact that ports are tourist traps makes it difficult to use cruising as a method of experiencing specific locations you might be interested in. Previously I had a lot of interest in a carribbean cruise where you got to see several eastern carribbean island but I feel like it would be difficult to get much more than a casual glance at each one and that view would be heavily skewed by the scenes that existed at port. I feel like cruises where a lot of the point was what goes on outside of your window would be more exciting. So in the future things like a Panama Canal, fall New England/Canada or European River cruise seems really interesting to me but I’m not sure that paying $300 more for a flight is worth the change in scenery. Excursions also don't really interest me as I don't generally want a curated experience. This means that the ports are less vital than the route.

  4. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Monday is looking to be the nicest day of the week with a 0% chance of rain and a high of 63F/17C but a chilly low of 44F/7C. Sunrise is at 5:28 am and sunset at 8:33 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  5. Multi generation cruise to Alaska: Any preference among these three ships? Itineraries are very similar. All depart from Seattle which is easily reached from all western cities. Similar costs as well. Advice appreciated.
  6. The Ship We loved the Nieuw Statendam. The Eurodam had been our favorite ship, but we loved the newest ship - she was bright with clean lines and really fun art work. The new additions of the Dutch cafe, larger New York deli and Rudy’s were well received. More on food below. We loved the layout of the deck 2 music walk and spent our evenings going from one music venue to the next. We have never been a big fan of the regular evening shows and only attended one evening show. Others complained that there wasn’t a place to put down a drink in the theater, but this wasn’t an issue for us. We heard others complain that The Rolling Stones room band was too loud - but we enjoyed them. Our favorite was the BB King band - they were the best we have seen on HAL. On the Eurodam we regularly used the crows nest, but were only there once on this ship. We think this is because there were no scheduled trivia or happy hours in the crows nest. Also, we enjoyed the coffee in the Dutch Cafe, so there was no need to go up there for our daily “good coffee” fix - especially since we made a promise to only use the steps and to avoid the elevators. 12 decks is a long way up. We only used the elevators for debarkation when we had our luggage and one other time when we carrying cups of coffee. Pretty good for a 14 day cruise!!! During the day there were plenty of places to sit and read. We found the chairs in the BB King room and the couches on Deck 10 over the pool to be the most comfortable. Trivia was mostly in the billboard space and we played and lost regularly. Trivia times varied, but on most days trivia was at 6:30 and also either at 1 or 4 (or 4:30) and on some sea days, three times during the day. We walked the promenade deck, when it wasn’t too windy and inside and in the gym on windy days. DH complained that the promenade deck was too narrow. The Food Food is subjective- so view our comments with that in mind. We ate differently this cruise than we had in the past. We tried to eat a bit healthier and to choose our indulgences more carefully. Breakfasts were either in the Lido Market or room service if we had an early port call. We liked the lido because we could easily pick and choose what to eat. The stations moved quickly and we rarely had difficulty finding a table. For breakfast I mostly had a poached egg over 1/2 an English muffin. I then added smoked salmon to my egg and muffin and had fruit on the side. The poached egg station had fruit and the salmon was self serve at the next station- so breakfast was pretty easy and fast . Other days I had Greek yogurt and fruit. One day I ordered a soft boiled egg - but it was more raw than soft boiled. The crew circulated regularly with coffee, water and orange juice. They were helpful in finding tables and getting items for people with mobility issues. The chairs in the lido are unfortunately very heavy. Room service was punctual and the hot foods arrived hot. The only miss was the scrambled eggs - they were terrible. The next time I wrote in poached eggs instead of scrambled and they made the substitution. We also requested turkey bacon instead of regular bacon and that was also honored. When we ate lunch on the ship- it was in the lido (other than the Mariners brunch). I either had salads (loved the Asian Salad with seared tuna!!) the Daily Indian Special or stir fry. DH mostly had salads or pre-made sandwiches. The only issue with the salads was that the servers wanted to give us substantially more dressing than the very small amount of dressing we like. I really only use about a teaspoon of dressing for a large salad. We often got a cup of coffee at the Dutch Cafe in the afternoon. We didn’t have any of the snacks there with our coffee - but they did look good - especially the chocolate pastry. We did enjoy the biscuits they served with the coffee. If you order to drink there, they put the biscuit in your plate but if you get coffee to go, you have to ask for one (or 2)!! Happy hour was at 4 in the ocean bar and at 6 in the Billboard and sometimes also in The Rolling Stones venue. Some nights there was also a later happy hour - but I don’t remember the time or location. Most days we went to either the 4 or 6 happy hour. This cruise we ate dinner in the MDR less times than on previous cruises. We ate once in the Tamarind and enjoyed our dinner very much. The shrimp and lobster stir fry was especially good. We ate once in the Pinnacle Grill. The crab legs were fantastic and the portion was huge. I may not have been able to finish because we each ordered an appetizer and then an order of the clothesline bacon to share - the bacon was fantastic!!! We shared a baked Alaska for dessert and had trouble finishing it. We ate once in the Canaletto and enjoyed our meal. We were sad they removed the gnocchi with short ribs from the menu as that was our favorite— we did have the gnocchi with the duck which was good, but not as good. We shared two small plates and two large plates and two desserts- again we had trouble finishing. We ate 2 times at Rudy’s. We loved it so much the first time we went back again. Each time we were given a glass of sparkling wine and a salmon puff to start our meal. This was followed by the most wonderful French bread and dips. For starters, we shared calamari the first night and a trio of fish salads the second. For main courses I had fish both nights (Dover sole and then red fish) and DH had the nightly specials - coq a vin one night and a veal chop the next. The first night we shared a wonderful dessert that was covered in meringue. They also bring out little bites with chocolate and truffles with coffee. The second visit we skipped dessert. The service and the manager Dreis were fantastic. I could have eaten there every night. We also ate at the sushi bar one night. This was not a great meal. The food tasted great, but we were told we had to order everything at once and it would be paced. Unfortunately we received all of our food within 15 minutes and the meal was really rushed. On top of this the wine steward was very slow and we waited a long time to get our wine. We skipped dessert because we weren’t ready for it yet. This ended up being a mistake because when we were ready for dessert around 9:30 - we learned that there is no where other than the New York Deli to get dessert at that time. We weren’t crazy about the choices. The lido doesn’t reopen until 10:30, the gelato bar was closed, the Dutch Cafe is open, but just for drinks. The person in the Dutch Cafe went in the back and found us 2 chocolate chip cookies. We could have gotten room service, but we weren’t ready to go to our room. On the day of the mariners brunch (which was fine) we didn’t want another full course meal for dinner so we had sandwiches and fries at the New York deli. It was a nice treat. We also had pizza there for dinner one night at 10:00 after we returned from a long outing in Reykjavik. All other nights on the ship we ate dinner in the MDR. The food and service were very good. We were able to get tables for 2 when we requested them. We never had to wait for a table and most nights ate around 7 pm. Portion sizes ranged from very small (red fish) to huge (duck and chicken parmigiana). More to come.

  8. My favorite cruise was the 30 days Hawaii, Tahiti and Marquesas aboard the Rotterdam, followed very closely by the 26 day Baltic/Transatlantic aboard the Eurodam which was origional sold as a Voyage of the Vikings cruise. The itinerarys were so different there is no way to compare them other than to say they were both fascinating and beautiful. But the best thing about the Holland America cruises are the wonderful staffs.
  9. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING - Updated August 9th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. 10. Eurodam is getting close. Nieuw Amsterdam not too far behind.
  11. Both the Eurodam and the Bieuw Amsterdam are maing there way up theGastineau channel.
  12. All three ships have 5 star ratings on c c. Similar costs and all depart from Seattle. This would be a multigenerational family cruise with passengers from one to 72 years of age.. Advice appreciated.
  13. Hello all. We have never cruised to Alaska and my packing list is the opposite of a Caribbean cruise which is sundresses and flip flops. 😂 If anyone has sailed Eurodam on the Glacier Bay route could you share which night were the Gala nights? Thanks so much!
  14. I have an upcoming trip on the Eurodam. Is there a better selection of bottles for room consumption once on-board than what is sold on the website?
  15. So as I began contemplating a last minute Alaskan cruise this year, the limited selection (especially for cabins) at the last minute had me looking at cruises for next Summer. I was planning to take the Nieuw Amsterdam (as we did last year), BUT it is being replaced by the Koningsdam. Last year we had a Signature Suite on the Nieuw Amsterdam and, of course, I started by looking at those. As some other threads here on CC have pointed out there are VERY few Signature Suites on the Koningsdam, which was surprising to me. However, as I began to compare the online videos of the various Koningsdam suites I was surprised at the new layout for the Signature Suites. Indeed, I'm not a fan. More investigation shows that the even pricier Neptune suites on the Kdam are much closer equivalent to the Signature Suites in everything from layout to size to deck positioning and number of suites. Even then, you lose the extra little "make-up" desk on the Kdam (although Kdam's Neptune cabin is wider). One of the biggest disappointments of the Kdam's Signature suites, however, involves the size of the balcony - they are much more shallow than the equivalent NA/Eurodam SS balconies. The Neptune balconies on the Kdam are essentially the same depth as the SS on NA/Euro. At the end of the day, to get the same Nieuw Amsterdam "Signature Suite" experience on the Kdam, I feel like I would really have to "pay up" for the Neptune suite...bummer. Given how few signature suites there are, I'm not sure why HAL bothered with them on the Kdam. Definitely a bummer and a clear "revenue generation" move by HAL (not surprising of course - Corporate America FTW!). Has anyone else noticed this?
  16. My wife and I just returned from an Alaska cruise on the Eurodam. I've scanned the daily "When & Where" activity guides for that cruise. I hope that some people who will be sailing on the Eurodam this summer will find it useful. Here's the link:
  17. We'll be onboard the Eurodam next March, docking overnight in Honolulu. There seems to be 2 terminals there: #2 and #11. Which one will the Eurodam be at?
  18. The Westerdam approaching Margerie Glacier as seen from the Eurodam leaving Margerie Glacier last Tuesday.
  19. Day 6 - 08/15/2019; Ketchikan, AK; Ketchikan is located on Revillagigedo Island (named in 1793 by Captain George Vancouver), 700 miles north of Seattle, WA, and 235 miles south of Juneau, AK. in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, the southeastern most city in Alaska. Ketchikan’s maritime heritage is proudly reflected in its nickname: “The Salmon Capital of the World”, and the region’s history runs deep in cultural and geological evidence that is still vibrant today. With a population at the 2010 census of 8,050 within its city limits, it is the sixth-most populous city in the state. So, on Thursday morning Nieuw A. left Clarence Strait behind and came sailing down Tongass Narrows, the Y-shaped channel at 1000 hours, passed Guard Island, eventually Ketchikan International Airport. Upon arrival at Ketchikan proper, she then got ready to take her place at port side alongside at Berth #2 out of the four cruise ship berths, along Front Street. We were safely docked by 1100 hrs. Behind us at Berth #3 Ruby Princess was already alongside. Ruby’s fleet mate Royal Princess was at Berth #4 (1000-1800) and in front of us at Berth #1 (0700-1315) was our older sister Eurodam (0700-1200). About 40 miles east of the City of Ketchikan lays Misty Fjord (or Misty Fjords) National Monument administered by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Tongass National Forest. The region was first visited by Europeans in 1793 when that British dude, Captain George Vancouver, explored up Behm Canal, the prominent sea-filled glacial trough along the western margin of the monument separating it from Revillagigedo Island. Because of the remoteness of the area, most visitors arrive by boat or aircraft from Ketchikan or Juneau. More adventurous travelers choose an overnight charter service or spend days exploring by kayak. We had purchased a shorex by the name of Misty Fjords and Wilderness Explorer by Allen Marine with a 12:30 PM departure from the Ryus Float at the north end and opposite Berth #1 where the 150-passenger water-jet powered catamaran St, Aquilina was waiting. This was a 4.5-hour exploration of the forested mountain slopes, rocky shores, steep cliff walls and waterfalls of the fjord while sailing the Revillagigedo Channel, Behm Canal, and Rudyerd Bay. Every seat on the cat had a pair of binoculars as well as a map of Misty Fjords National Monument with our route high-lighted with a magic marker by a deck crew member. This would be the only day of this cruise where the weather was not that great, no rain but a constant mist that had a notable effect on the visibility within Misty Fjord. St. Aquilina had a great crew, starting with her captain and deck crew, her naturalist/commentator (from Agoura Hills/Los Angeles), her galley crew and her Tlingit native artist. During the trip, the galley crew served up donut holes, hot chocolate and a choice of clam chowder or vegetarian chili. We got a look at New Eddystone Rock, a volcanic spire rising from the water, a sea lion colony taking a nap, a Tlingit pictograph, and we had a stop at a Bald Eagle’s nest (no one was home) Back onboard Nieuw A, she let go of her lines around 7:00 PM and then began her high-speed run back to Vancouver, BC. We had our last “specialty restaurant” dinner at 7:30 PM, this one inside Canaletto. The menu has changed in there, even since Koningsdam in March. At 8:30 PM, there was an “Orange Party,” now apparently a regular event on all dam ships. It is basically an onboard celebration inspired by King’s Day, the Netherland’s national holiday. Orange is the color most associated with the Netherlands and the House of Orange, Holland’s royal family. The event took place in the BB King’s Blues Club with the band of the same name providing dance music and there were Dutch-inspired appetizers, beer, cocktails, plus a festive display of national pride with a sea of orange! 9:30 PM found us in Main Stage for the stand-up comedy of Kristen Key. She uses a guitar to create original musical comedy and had some funny moments, one of them being a short video of a day in the life of a HAL towel animal. Tomorrow will be our last day – time flies on seven-day cruises – on this journey while transiting Canada’s Inside Passage. Pic is a look at the awesome Nieuw Amsterdam mural in the Deck 2 starboard aft Explorers Lounge
  20. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Eclipse at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. The lovely weather we have seen recently is going to slowly go back to the usual Juneau weather. Monday is supposed to be sunny with a high of 75F/24C and a low of 52F/11C. Sunrise is at 5:13 am and sunset at 8:51 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
