  2. Our Caribbean cruise on the Koningsdam turned out to be the last one of the season. We knew there were things going on out there, whispers of a virus in far off places like China and only one case in California. When we boarded, the only pressing question asked was if we had traveled to China in the last two weeks. That was on March 4th. The day we returned on March 15th, we came home to a changed world. I didn't feel up to doing this review considering all that has unfolded, but a fellow traveler on our cruise encouraged me to do so, so I am finally sitting down to recall the wonderful time we had on this Southern Wayfarer Cruise. We take a yearly winter/spring break from our otherwise hectic life, and this was our 12th cruise on HAL and our longest cruise ever at 11 glorious days. We flew in from Boston to FLL the day before, and this time stayed at Riverside Hotel. We have tried a handful of hotels in FLL, all have been nice and had their own charm. This hotel is old but it was very well kept, we stayed in the tower and the room was quite lovely, despite older touches like brass in the bathroom and a small TV. The room was super clean and the staff very friendly. We had an early dinner in their outside restaurant by the river, 'The Boatyard'. The food was so delicious especially after my winter diet, how many times did I dream of this? I had a wonderful fish sandwich and a cosmopolitan as we watched the boats drift back and forth. Embarkation day was finally here, and it was quite seamless. As we walked up the gangway my husband and I gave each other that promised gangway kiss, so grateful to be able to share another cruise together! We accepted an upsell two days previous to a Signature Suite, so quickly went to our room to check it out. Last year we had sailed on Nieuw Statendam in a Signature Suite and had been crazy about it. On Koningsdam, there is a tub and very small shower vs. the very large shower and no tub on Nieuw Statendam. We much prefer the layout of the NS, as the shower was just so tiny on Koningdam. Aside from this, the room was spacious and identical in every great feature of her sister ship. We met our cabin steward Eli, and he and his assistant Martin were typical of the great HAL service we have always received. We didn't have one complaint and were pampered with a spotless cabin for the entire cruise. It was so nice to have two sea days to start with. We are early risers and sun/water lovers, so we were the among the first to be at the pool those first two mornings. We left our chairs to get breakfast at the Lido and bring it back to the nice tables by the Lido pool. There is nothing like having coffee and a wonderful omelette while looking out to sea! After a few more hours at the pool (and being the first ones in the water!) it was time to move on. We often try and "zig" while others "zag", a favorite phrase from Steve Birnbaum on how to navigate Disney. It works during a cruise, too, and we often try and be at places at off hours to minimize crowds. This cruise was pretty chill however, and didn't get ramped up at the pools until mid day/afternoon. We had excellent weather the entire cruise, except for our first stop: St. Maarten. We had booked a Golden Eagle Catamaran cruise (had done it 3 times before so knew it was a good one) and met outside in our designated spot when it started to rain. We walked to our destination in very gloomy conditions, lost about 25% of the people along the way as it was pretty depressing, but we pressed on, as we knew the weather in this place changes very quickly. So glad we did, about 15 minutes after we boarded the skies cleared and it was the most wonderful, beautiful day as we swam in those clear waters. Later that evening we met people that took bus tours, and that was hard to hear how they sat in buses while damp from the rain. It is always a risk, taking excursions, you just never know with the weather. After today, we had beautiful calm seas and gorgeous days. MDR service and food was outstanding. We had fixed late seating and had wonderful service from Gunawan and Marvin. We tried new things each night, it was presented so beautifully and the timing was perfect. Dawn, our wine stewardess, was just so sweet and proficient. This cruise had a different vibe from years past when things seemed rushed in the MDR.. Not sure if changes have been made, or because we were late fixed, or because there is a great manager, but it was noticeable. In my review to HAL I called it a "happy cruise". Looking back now, it makes me sad to think how everything has abruptly stopped. We had more days of pampering and adventure, I will continue the review later if there is an interest. For now, our thoughts are buzzing with concern for our families and our country and the world. And of course for all the wonderful HAL staff that have made cruising such an extraordinary pleasure to us! Thank You!!!
  3. Never slept on the Murphy bed so can’t help with that. On Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam breakfast for Neptune & Pinnacle guests is served in Club Orange, not in the Pinnacle Grill.
  4. Today, April 6th, I would be enjoying a sea day and my 70th birthday onboard the Koningsdam sailing from Buenos Aires enroute to Punta Arenas....missing that good ole Vitamin Sea so much!
  5. I would like to know if anyone has experience using the Murphy bed that is in the Signature suite. Would it be comfortable for an adult or only suitable for a child? Also for the Neptune suite is breakfast still available in the Pinnacle Grill or is it in Club Orange?
  6. DH and I should be on the Veendam on an At Sea day (April 1-8). Alas, we have been sheltered-in-place at home in Florida for a month. At least we got to sail on Koningsdam in January and the Veendam in February and on the Carnival Liberty in early March. Hope we get to sail on the Veendam again in Dec. after she moves to Tampa.
  7. OK. This is good news indeed. Hope they can continue to get better. Its a scary thought about seeing the national news yesterday reporting that this week could be the worst yet. I know that I have reached a point for the good of mom and I that I now REFUSE to go out. We are not going to starve considering our frg/freezer is stuffed. I have found a facebook group that was started for the Rotterdam and Zaandam. Found some videos that have been done by crew on some of the other ships. I know this one is a big priority since its from the Amsterdam and does include Captain Mercer at the end. I also found one done on the Veendam, Zuiderdam and the Koningsdam. Another one was including the medical team sounding the ships whistle but not sure from which ship. Enjoy everyone and grab some tissues.
  8. We were on the Koningsdam 2018, we had a veranda aft on the 4th floor and my parents had the suite aft. Our room was barely smaller and the balcony was almost twice the size. We were on the N.S. this spring and had the HUGE veranda cabin on the 4th floor. That was really great, we decided we love those 4th floor veranda rooms. Perfect location!
  9. Thank you for the report, Rich. Luckily, our DD has just gone to the store for us, and popcorn is on the list. PS Do we ever hear how the Koningsdam is getting along? Any ill people?
  10. It seems that all of the suites, on both the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam with the exception of the Pinnacle, have the TV over the back of the Couch. However the cabins from Verandah on down have the TV positioned correctly so that it can be seen from the bed or the couch. Who in the world, at HAL, approved the over the couch design? The Neptune Suites, on the Oosterdam and Volendam, are the same size 380 square feet as the Koningsdam, however you're correct that those ships have the separate dressing area off the bathroom where the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam do not. We do like to watch TV sometimes and the positioning of the TV over the Couch would be more than annoying after paying the price for a Neptune Suite.

  12. Yes I have read about this happening. Just have to continue to follow her and be on the lookout from any updates that Copper10-8 is able to find out and pass on to the rest of us. I was one of the very large number of followers who were tracking the warp speed transits that Zaandam and Rotterdam did. At 3am local time for me I finally gave up and at that time Zaandam was in the lower lock on the Atlantic side and Rotterdam had entered the lake and was throttling up. If Koningsdam does end up doing a transit then will sit and watch that one too.
  13. I see another thread has picked up on the Koningsdam. Can these be merged or is that not recommended. Thanks,
  14. Thanks for the update! We were *almost* on the Koningsdam for her trip around South America. While we were flying to FLL, the cruise was cancelled:(
  15. I can only comment on Neptune suites. We have always had aft NS on 4 different ships. The koningsdam was the worse. Very small and stupid configuration with the tv over the sofa. Sometimes we like to watch a movie after dinner and that was near to impossible...my favorite was the oosterdam: large and very comfortable...next favorite was the volendam. I loved having a closed off dressing/vanity area with a walk in closet. I get up earlier than my husband and it was nice to dress in exercise clothes without waking him...the eurodam suite was also small and the decor was dark and not pleasant
  16. today is Go for Broke Day, and National Dandelion Day The official military brat flower is the dandelion. The dandelion itself is very much like a military brat. Its seeds can be scattered by the wind and puts its roots down anywhere. 17. There is also a fairly safe anchorage off Cristobal / Colon. Koningsdam would have no problems going round Cape Horn or through Magellan Straits in winter. I have done it in mid winter - July 1985. By definition "Going around the Horn" is going through Drake Passage from North of 50 deg. south from either Ocean to the other. From square rigger days. No cruise ships do this as they always use part or all of Magellan or Beagle channel.
  18. Koningsdam is around the corner of Brasil & heading for Cristobal for bunkers I would think & then through the canal.
  19. On occasion I have been checking to see where all the ships are. Koningsdam had started the trip around South America to get to the west coast. Yesterday I noticed that she was docked at Fortaleza, Brazil after spending a couple of days just sitting there like she was anchored. So I decided to check again tonight and have noticed that she has turned around and is heading more north in the direction of the Caribbean and wonder if there has been a change of plans for her to go to the west coast. When I checked the HAL website her Alaska cruises starting in mid May are still listed.but we all know that the Canadian ports are closed at that time and till July 1st. Hopefully Copper will see this and maybe he will be able to share some info on this as her speed at the time of starting this thread is 20 knts.
  20. Nieuw Statendam has the same problem as the Koningsdam.
  21. Yes, that is full speed for the Koningsdam making me think something is wrong. With no cruises to be there for in a hurry, why so fast? If they have crew that are need of help, wouldn't they go to Curacao?
  22. This is a video i took on the Koningsdam in 2019. We were in a verandah room, with the extended balconies on deck 4, Beethoven deck. Excuse the cheesiness of the video.....
  23. Don't go by the generic diagrams or pictures you see on the HAL site. Use halfacts.com to look at actual pictures of specific cabins. I believe that on the Pinnacle ships only the Main deck OVs and the forward-facing ones on decks 10 and 11 have the small windows, and everything else is floor-to-ceiling. Here is one on the Main deck https://halfacts.com/pinnacle-class/1095-koningsdam/ edit: the first few pics on the link you posted are for 11002 and 10002. These are forward-facing, and I believe those windows are larger than the Main deck OV windows.
  24. I'm booked on one in January. Koningsdam 24 day Mexico Riviera/Circle Hawaii.
