  1. Well, we are now in Valetta, Malta and I have a couple of minutes to give you a small update regarding what is happening on HAL’s largest... * The welcome Aboard buffet on Lido Market was absolutely stunning. FRESH Oysters, crablegs, clams, razor clams, etc etc. For us at least a first to see this onboard a HAL vessel that is doing a regular cruise. * Food is the best we have seen on HAL. The MDR serves delicious menus, lots if lamb by the way and portions that are large enough. The Sushi for lunch at Lido Market has been greatly improved and even includes sashimi and very inventive, attractive choices made by the Nami sushi chef. Not sure if other vessels have seen the same imorovement. * Service: mixed bag here. Most crew is as always HAL-friendly but we have seen some overworked crew and some grumpy crew as well, which is not normal for HAL. In the MDR, head waiters, assistant Maitre D’s and Maitre D’s are noted for their total absence except running around. * The Signature Beverage Package: UNLIMITED. I say again, UNLIMITED NON- alcoholic drinks. The 15 beverage limit is ONLY VALID FOR ALCOHOLIC DRINKS. ANY drink of 11$ or less is included. except large bottles of Evian or San Pelegrino ( and those are currently also included as no-more Perrier onboard) I trust that this settles the discussion once and for all. * NO surcharge for a second main dish although portions are plenty. * Pinnacle grill serves amazing food. new items are great. my Filet steak was fork tender and of excellent taste. Maybe a tad dryer than the absolute best South African and Arentinian beef ( best beef in the World without antibiotics and hormones). * Orange Party seems to become a new tradition. bring Orange on your next cruise .
  2. I just booked a cruise on the Koningsdam on deck 7. I understand the bathrooms are very small. Someone said the toilet is at an angle and you hit the shower door when your on it. Anyone have any comments on this. Thanks for your input.
  3. We’re sailing in July and would love to hear your thoughts on the specialty dining options onboard Koningsdam, including the pop ups like Cellar Masters Dinner and De Librije. We’ve previously sailed on the NA in Alaska and enjoyed both PG and Tamarind.
  4. We have booked a cruise on this ship for December 2019. We are two star mariners and this will be our fifth cruise on Holland America. For the first time we have booked an inside (sideways) cabin. So we are exploring the cabana rentals on the Koningsdam and have a couple of questions. If you have had one would you recommend booking for the entire week? Based on the layout what is the best cabana retreat to book for a couple based on total peace, relaxation, and of course the best views? DId you enjoy the perks included with the rental? IF we book now and change our mind would we get a full refund $ or an onboard credit? Thanks for your time.
  5. Hello, Could anyone please let me know which of the SB Neptune aft wrap cabins on the Koningsdam is your favorite, and why. I would really appreciate any insights and information you might have. Thanks, Michael

  7. Hi all. We are returning to HAL after a couple of Princess cruises, and for the first time, will be on one of HAL's larger ships (the Koningsdam). One of the things that jumped out at me as unique about the Kdam, besides the size, is the Coca Cola Freestyle fountain machines. My husband and I are not big soda drinkers (but will be spending plenty at the bars on other beverages), but the kids all are. I would rather not pay for soda pop package for all 6 of us if I don't have to, but also am aware that the three of my four kids prefer the taste of diet soda. What soda options would be available on the Koningsdam if I gifted them $50 fountain soda cards instead of doing the package? The full "Freestyle" gamut, or just a select few? Anyone know which diet pops would be included? Thanks so much for any help you can provide.
  8. Hello! Will cruise this fall on Ms Koningsdam, cabin V8032 and i was hoping someone here can answer my questions:) 1-Any pictures of the sofa bed (opened!) 2-According to deck plans, cabin and balcony seems a little bigger due to the location of the cabin, is that really the case? Thanks!
  9. It's been a few years since our last cruise on Holland, and it may very well have been our last. For reference, the cruise date was March 17, 10 days to ABC islands with other ports. It appears that Holland, and rightfully so, has embarked on a campaign to reduce food waist. In the Lido restaurant they now dispense the food rather than allow self serve. Great idea. Some Holland ships are testing the idea of charging for an additional entree in the main dining room. Bad idea. They don't seem to care about the dietary needs of those desiring no sugar added desserts. Bad idea. No sugar free dessert on the chocolate parade featured on the 9th evening of the cruuse. Bad decision. But most appalling of all was the extra charge for a second entree in a specialty restaurant where we had already paid $25 pp for dinner. Overall, the food and service were just ok, but the shows were not. They have cut back to where there were no singers, only dancers for the production shows. The was only 2 production shows with encore performances in the last two nights. There was four shows, a comedian, ventriloquist, magician and singer, that were basically average. The music walk was ok. Reading this review, one might ask why would this be your last cruise on Holland. well here's why. Holland used to be just a little better than the competition. In my opinion they have lowered themselves to meet a lower expectation. They are using the spirit airlines approach of nickel and diming themselves to profitability. They used to distinguish themselves by making their mostly repeat customers feel special. That's no longer true. I can sail on Royal or Norwegian or any of the other average cruise lines of I want average. That was not my expectations.
  10. So, apparently a crew member in the photo department tried to start an international incident in Gibraltar today. Poor Captain - probably had no idea that it happened, but the Hotel Director has no excuse since that department falls under him. Whoopsies! https://crew-center.com/cruise-ship-captain-apologizes-after-posting-wrong-sign-gibraltar?fbclid=IwAR3BuLfRWJC3Do5LH1AEQEQ07Xm7BEXJzBUpPDC8DMK17cl8N-rF0faiLBA
  11. Hello all, I had a question for those of you that have sailed on the Koningsdam - are there outlets located near the bed? I am debating if I should bring an extension cord or a power bar. There are three of us in the cabin so we will need access to some electricity!!! We will be staying in a Neptune Suite if that affects the outlet situation. Thanks!! (I tried to do a quick search but I am at work, so I wasn’t able to find anything in my admittedly semi-distracted search. I apologize if this info is posted somewhere).
  12. Koningsdam: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Sail Dates: March 27, 2019 – April 7, 2019 Cabin: 6177, Verandah Stateroom Ports: Leaving out of Fort Lauderdale; Phillipsburg, St. Maarten; Castries, St. Lucia with a Cruise of Soufriere Bay; Bridgetown Barbados; Fort-De-France, Martinique with a Daylight Cruise Passed Mount Pelee; Basseterre, St. Kitts; Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Half Moon Cay, Bahamas Captain: Darin Bowland Cruise Director: Nathan Hinojosa Hotel Director: Mustafa Galbahar Our Cruise Experience: First with HAL; 40 total Pre Cruise Stay: We decided to stay in Fort Lauderdale the night before so we booked a room at the Rodeway Inn Airport. They provided a free shuttle from the airport to the hotel, and from the hotel to the cruise terminal, which you have to reserve when you check in. We arrived around 4:00 and found the waiting area for shuttles, called the hotel and the shuttle arrived within about 20-30 minutes. After we got into our room, it was close to dinner time so we decided to try Marina84, the hotel’s restaurant & bar. We’d read some reviews on it and they were mostly good. Since we didn’t have a car to go anywhere else, this was as good as any place. It was already doing a pretty good business when we went in and sat down. My husband ordered a hamburger and I ordered the French Dip…wish I’d ordered the hamburger! He said it was good and it looked good. My French Dip, however, was pretty bad. A fter dinner, we walked around checking out the hotel. It has a business center, which consists of two computers and I think a printer, located around the corner from the lobby. It has a shop in case you forgot something or want to buy other items. A pool of course, and the restaurant. Our room was nice with two full beds, TV, fridge, and a coffee maker. After we settled in for the night and were watching TV, the power went out. Once I found our flashlight, it came back on. Apparently lightening from the storm had struck a substation and caught the lines on fire causing the outage. It wasn’t out very long, but the next morning when I was getting ready for breakfast, it went out for a few hours. I was just getting out of the shower when it went out, and I had to put my makeup on with the trusty flashlight and couldn’t dry my hair. When the power finally came back on, we went for breakfast. I was not in a good mood, and breakfast took forever because everyone was so slow getting what they wanted. It’s one of those typical hotel breakfasts that has cereals, fruits, pastries, make your own waffles and pancakes, etc. As I said, I was not in a good mood with the power being out and this man walks in dressed as a yacht captain making jokes like this… “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking”. “That’s it, just your captain speaking.” Well some people thought it was funny, I, however, did not. He walked around the room making jokes with people and fortunately for him, he did not stop at our table. Shuttle time…we had reserved seats on the first shuttle to the terminal which left a little after 9:30. It was supposed to be 10:00, but we were ready and actually glad it was leaving earlier. I hope no one missed it!
  13. Spendin some time on the big K-dam from Ft. Lauderdale with stops at Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, Amber Cove, Kralendijk, Willemstad and Oranjestad
  14. Has anyone every gotten The Retreat on this ship? We have a 17 night cruise with two sets of 5 straight days at sea and thought it would be nice since we don't have a veranda. I tried to look on the website and couldn't find anything. Can someone help me find a link to it?
  15. DH and I will be on the April 29 sailing on the Koningsdam out of Civitavecchia and have the Signature Beverage Package as part of the Explore 4. Just found out the price limit on that package has been upped from $9 max per drink to $11. Anyone currently on the Koningsdam willing to post pictures of some of the current wine offerings in places like the Ocean Bar and Crow's Nest? I've heard the list was supposed to be changed this month and I'm really hoping it's an improvement over what I saw on the Nieuw Statendam in March. Thanks in advance.
  16. I saw the Koningsdam does not have a Main Theater but a World Stage. What exactly is that?
  17. We recently sailed this ship .The pool where the steps are in about waist deep with water ;but ,as you move to what you might think is the deeper end it in fact lowers to about 2 feet ,' There is one very large jacuzzi ;however the 2 smaller jacuzzis have room enough for just 2 men in each jacuzzi When comparing both the main pool & jacuzzi space against other HAL ships & other cruise lines ,Koningsdam imo comes in dead last in these regards
  18. We are booking a caribbean cruise over Thanksgiving. Has anyone stayed in Cabin 7134 on this ship and what are your comments.
  19. So I was on the Koningsdam in January in the Caribbean....beautiful cruise! posted a LOT of photos on my facebook page, but never did elsewhere. Anyway, I did a very amateur (!!) video of our room, 4191. Don't know if anyone is interested, but thought I would post. Again, VERY amateur! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O65kOVKoVfY
  20. Koningsdam Room D7002 Any experiences with this forward facing room? It is right below the navigation deck, have any of you had noise issues? Any issues with the motion of the ship? Pictures would be great.
  21. Hi, very occasional cruiser (4, taken over 20+ years). I've always go straight to CC forums for info when I'm looking! I was thinking it was about time for the bucket list Alaska cruise when I saw HAL's reduced deposit promotion and decided to go ahead an do it. I've narrowed things down quite a bit and I'm looking at either the Koningsdam or Eurodam in late May 2020. The same standard Veranda in generally the same location is just about the same on each ship. The itinerary is slightly different, Eurodam sails from Seattle so there is a day at sea, while the Koningsdam has inside passage on two days, up and back from Vancouver. Eurodam does Sitka, Koningsdam does Skagway. We want to see Tracy Arm -- Koningsdam has a drop off for an excursion on the way to Juneau, whereas Eurodam says it sails up the Stephens Passage straight to Juneau, but we can catch an excursion from Juneau to Tracy Arm. So, there doesn't appear to be a ton of difference in itinerary, but maybe I'm missing something since we've never been to the area. I don't think we can go wrong, but I'd appreciate any feedback people have, especially people who have sailed on the Eurodam and Koningsdam (I know the Koningsdam hasn't sailed to Alaska before). Thanks everybody!
  22. Thanks to all who arranged and posted to the sailaway thread today. I will not be posting a 'live from' and instead will post irregular musings and will delve for information if requested!
  23. Capt Darin has just announced that a female passenger is in need of urgent medical attention and is going to be helicoptered from the upper decks. Crew is clearing decks and rear pool to allow for the medical crew to arrive. We currently have a wind of 35 knots! French coastguard is sending the chopper and it is due to arrive in 25 minutes.
  24. The transatlantic passage has been mostly smooth so far. The ship, music and staff have been great. I am very glad I booked this cruise. Two minor complaints that I wish HAL would address. The coffee tastes like warm dishwater with a little flavor (ok, so I've really never drank dishwater but it's what I think it would taste like). Army coffee was much better and it was nothing to brag about. I wish HAL had taken the money spent on the Ophra (Went on one and it was a joke) themed cruises and spent it on coffee instead. Other cruise lines have adopted name brand coffee and it has paid off. And don't try to find a real croissant for breakfast, they are at only one station and they are just like the little ones Sam's sells in a carton of two or three dozen for little or nothing, a week old and not flaky at all. Does HAL bake any bread onboard now? Celebrity is by far better in both of these areas, minor as they are but for some of us a good cup of coffee really starts our day right. End of rant!
  25. We are booked in cabin VH4043 on the Koningsdam for a 21 day cruise, Feb. 2020. This cabin has a different footprint in shape. Just curious as to the interior layout. The balcony is larger and yes I know it is an obstructed view. Thanks for any information on this cabin, always appreciated.
