  1. Knowing what you know now in mid-May, would you book a 7 day Mex. Riv. on Koningsdam this December?
  2. I’m wondering if the VB staterooms aft on deck 4 are desirable. I like the idea of the larger balcony but am worried about increased movement at the aft and possible noise from the galley below. Anybody have any experience with these staterooms?
  3. Have any of you rented one and do you know if you book 3 in a row if you can open the dividers and make it one large cabana. We are a family of 7 adults and two children ages 2 and 10. We’ve booked Cabanas 3,4 and 5 for a Mexican Rivera Cruise in March. Did you enjoy the perks ?
  4. I wasn’t originally planning on doing a review for our cruise, but with all that is happening in the world, I thought it might come as a welcome distraction. I have certainly enjoyed the reviews I have read recently. I don’t have any notes from our trip, so it will all be from memory and the daily planners which I kept. Do feel free to ask any questions and I’ll do my best to answer. First, I’ll introduce us. I’m Alice and my husband is Pierre. I’m British/ Belgian and Pierre is French. We live in Belgium and have been married for two years. Before I knew Pierre, I had cruised 11 times with various friends, mainly in the Caribbean. Last year, I took Pierre on his first cruise - a 7-day cruise on Rotterdam from Rotterdam to the Fjords. Like many people, he had been sceptical about cruising, but he had a great time, which is how we ended up booking this cruise. Little did we imagine everything that would happen afterwards. Pre-cruise: We flew Brussels-Dublin-Miami, taking advantage of US pre-clearance in Dublin. We arrived in Miami on the Sunday evening and stayed in Miami Beach. On the Monday morning, we had booked a tour in French of the Everglades. It was a small group and we greatly enjoyed the tour. We were back in time for lunch, which we had at Alma Mexicana, after which we enjoyed Miami Beach until around 4pm. We then relocated to Fort Lauderdale. We spent the Tuesday walking around Fort Lauderdale, taking a trip on the Carrie B and having lunch at Boathouse at the Riverside, followed by the beach and a visit to Total Wine. On the Wednesday morning, before heading to the ship, we stocked up on a few things at Walgreens.
  5. Hi everyone! This is our first HAL cruise (Emerald RC). We have an aft Neptune Suite booked for Thanksgiving week, 2020 and I had a question regarding dining. Would I need to reserve a dinner dining time in the Club Orange? Would I be able to order off the dinner menu and have dinner in my suite? I have researched the boards and google, but I haven't found the answer to my question. Thank you! Also, any tips for a newbie in my situation? Julie
  6. We’ve rebooked to go to Alaska next May, and have upgraded ourselves to a balcony instead of the inside we would have been in this May! 🙂 our TA has booked cabin VF8160, and was wondering if anyone has stayed in this room, any pictures and is there any noise from above (sea view pool) also are we overlooked from above. Thanks and everyone stay safe
  7. Hi Everyone! Next year my wife and I will sailing on the Koningsdam for the first time. I've been looking at YouTube videos of the main dining room table layouts and noticed something different. The latest videos show the tables in the lower dining room pretty much lined up in definite rows, according to the number of seats. Older videos show the tables arranged like what is shown on the Halifacts website: https://halfacts.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/kodmmdr-new-numbers.pdf Can anyone who has been on the ship lately verify this? Thanks, Jon
  8. Just booked our cruise for next Feb 2021 to Hawaii. Does anyone have pictures of this room , and balcony? Would very much appreciate seeing them. Thanks, Cathy
  9. Our Caribbean cruise on the Koningsdam turned out to be the last one of the season. We knew there were things going on out there, whispers of a virus in far off places like China and only one case in California. When we boarded, the only pressing question asked was if we had traveled to China in the last two weeks. That was on March 4th. The day we returned on March 15th, we came home to a changed world. I didn't feel up to doing this review considering all that has unfolded, but a fellow traveler on our cruise encouraged me to do so, so I am finally sitting down to recall the wonderful time we had on this Southern Wayfarer Cruise. We take a yearly winter/spring break from our otherwise hectic life, and this was our 12th cruise on HAL and our longest cruise ever at 11 glorious days. We flew in from Boston to FLL the day before, and this time stayed at Riverside Hotel. We have tried a handful of hotels in FLL, all have been nice and had their own charm. This hotel is old but it was very well kept, we stayed in the tower and the room was quite lovely, despite older touches like brass in the bathroom and a small TV. The room was super clean and the staff very friendly. We had an early dinner in their outside restaurant by the river, 'The Boatyard'. The food was so delicious especially after my winter diet, how many times did I dream of this? I had a wonderful fish sandwich and a cosmopolitan as we watched the boats drift back and forth. Embarkation day was finally here, and it was quite seamless. As we walked up the gangway my husband and I gave each other that promised gangway kiss, so grateful to be able to share another cruise together! We accepted an upsell two days previous to a Signature Suite, so quickly went to our room to check it out. Last year we had sailed on Nieuw Statendam in a Signature Suite and had been crazy about it. On Koningsdam, there is a tub and very small shower vs. the very large shower and no tub on Nieuw Statendam. We much prefer the layout of the NS, as the shower was just so tiny on Koningdam. Aside from this, the room was spacious and identical in every great feature of her sister ship. We met our cabin steward Eli, and he and his assistant Martin were typical of the great HAL service we have always received. We didn't have one complaint and were pampered with a spotless cabin for the entire cruise. It was so nice to have two sea days to start with. We are early risers and sun/water lovers, so we were the among the first to be at the pool those first two mornings. We left our chairs to get breakfast at the Lido and bring it back to the nice tables by the Lido pool. There is nothing like having coffee and a wonderful omelette while looking out to sea! After a few more hours at the pool (and being the first ones in the water!) it was time to move on. We often try and "zig" while others "zag", a favorite phrase from Steve Birnbaum on how to navigate Disney. It works during a cruise, too, and we often try and be at places at off hours to minimize crowds. This cruise was pretty chill however, and didn't get ramped up at the pools until mid day/afternoon. We had excellent weather the entire cruise, except for our first stop: St. Maarten. We had booked a Golden Eagle Catamaran cruise (had done it 3 times before so knew it was a good one) and met outside in our designated spot when it started to rain. We walked to our destination in very gloomy conditions, lost about 25% of the people along the way as it was pretty depressing, but we pressed on, as we knew the weather in this place changes very quickly. So glad we did, about 15 minutes after we boarded the skies cleared and it was the most wonderful, beautiful day as we swam in those clear waters. Later that evening we met people that took bus tours, and that was hard to hear how they sat in buses while damp from the rain. It is always a risk, taking excursions, you just never know with the weather. After today, we had beautiful calm seas and gorgeous days. MDR service and food was outstanding. We had fixed late seating and had wonderful service from Gunawan and Marvin. We tried new things each night, it was presented so beautifully and the timing was perfect. Dawn, our wine stewardess, was just so sweet and proficient. This cruise had a different vibe from years past when things seemed rushed in the MDR.. Not sure if changes have been made, or because we were late fixed, or because there is a great manager, but it was noticeable. In my review to HAL I called it a "happy cruise". Looking back now, it makes me sad to think how everything has abruptly stopped. We had more days of pampering and adventure, I will continue the review later if there is an interest. For now, our thoughts are buzzing with concern for our families and our country and the world. And of course for all the wonderful HAL staff that have made cruising such an extraordinary pleasure to us! Thank You!!!
  10. I would like to know if anyone has experience using the Murphy bed that is in the Signature suite. Would it be comfortable for an adult or only suitable for a child? Also for the Neptune suite is breakfast still available in the Pinnacle Grill or is it in Club Orange?
  11. On occasion I have been checking to see where all the ships are. Koningsdam had started the trip around South America to get to the west coast. Yesterday I noticed that she was docked at Fortaleza, Brazil after spending a couple of days just sitting there like she was anchored. So I decided to check again tonight and have noticed that she has turned around and is heading more north in the direction of the Caribbean and wonder if there has been a change of plans for her to go to the west coast. When I checked the HAL website her Alaska cruises starting in mid May are still listed.but we all know that the Canadian ports are closed at that time and till July 1st. Hopefully Copper will see this and maybe he will be able to share some info on this as her speed at the time of starting this thread is 20 knts.
  12. Does anyone know why the Koningsdam is going south on the east coast of South America while all other ships are going north? Check cruisemapper.
  13. Has anyone stayed in either of these cabins? We are going on the October 3rd Mexican Riviera cruise and they looked larger than some of the other vista suites but the all the way forward. I've had aft staterooms, but never ALL the way in the front!
  14. With HAL loosing money, along with its investors, and nearly everyone else, I have a suggestion. Rather than sail all the way around South America, go thru the Panama Canal and be approved by the Canal authorities by removing the life boats which are causing the ship to not be approved for transit. The lifeboats could be shipped by rail and reloaded on the Pacific side. Without guests aboard, there should be plenty of life rafts still aboard for the crew. I know deployment in Seattle must be working crazy and with no assurance of exactly when cruises will resume.
  15. Greetings from L’il Ol England our Hearty Shipmates. Anyone else on the Belmont Andean Explorer train to Machu Picchu etc., then embarking the Koningsdam at Callao Port? We are getting more info reading CC contributors here, than from Imagine. In fact, it was here, we found Victoria had been dropped in favour of Seattle! We’re unsure if Imagine may have even advised us. Same thing with the HAL OBC for not cancelling! Thank you CC contributors. From the Roll Call posts, we can only see 2 other Brit couples on the Koningsdam and wonder if one of the ladies who references being in Peru 7 days before embarking Lima, MAY possibly be on our tour? But as with the couple from Nottingham (England!), personal messages are unavailable (don’t know if that’s my lack of Forum savvy?). At this point, UK travellers do not appear to be precluded from entry, nor subject to 14 day quarantine on entry to Peru, however, we expect Covid-19 to get MUCH WORSE in UK over the next 4 weeks. So Peru could ban us by the time we are due to arrive April 6. We have approx 14 hr Brit.Airways flight to Lima, then 5nts in Belmond Miraflores Hotel before rest of Imagine party (60 px?) arrive. We then fly to Arequipa and pick up the Andean Explorer. After 12,000 ft Lake Titicaca and Cusco, Machu Picchu, we fly back to Lima to bus to Callao and the ship. So a real Bucket List trip and one we do not want to miss. However, there are NOW a host of “pinch-points”, where we could get tripped up. Ignoring the 3 weeks we have back here in England to avoid the virus, we could get “impounded” in Peru (unfortunately, don’t speak Spanish), contract Covid in a number of enclosed spaces and if we do make the Koningsdam, will it end up just being a 16 day cruise to nowhere ? When the “icing on the cake” of the Machu Picchu holiday, was the unusual Cruise Itinerary. With so many Nth American & Canadians on this cruise we can see that San Diego and Vancouver could even be suspect now. UK press coverage of the 2 Princess ships’ passengers- and especially, Donald J’s comments on the Californian ship, making our usual British “sang-froid” is start to simmer. We are hardy folk here and both our parents survived The Blitz so do not intend to cancel BUT there are now many aspects of “our dream holiday” that are way beyond our control and we wonder if any other Brits - especially, Imagine clients, are looking at these boards and how they feel? obviously, if B.A cancel the flights (to Lima or back from Vancouver), if Peru blocks entry or HAL cancel, the decision is made for us. Good luck, stay safe & healthy to you all - whether we meet on board this cruise or another. KEVIN & SUZANNE.
  16. Boarded March 4. All going well. Full ship. Happy, healthy and having a great time. So far all port access. However, we have been denied access to St kitts on Wednesday. Rumor has it Princess denied access to St. Lucia tomorrow. Yet, we are good to go. Hmmmm????

  20. Greetings my friends on the Cruise Critic. I am currently sailing on the Koningsdam. Some of you who follow Scrapnana's post on Ft. Lauderdale noticed we were a bit late leaving Ft. Lauderdale on Sunday night, We were way late. The problem was we were ready to go by 4:15PM but had to wait our turn. We were hemmed in by a Celebrity ship and she had to move out so we could turn and the Celebrity ship was very late leaving. We ran into strong head winds and that made the journey bit tougher. Consequently we were an hour and a half late arriving at HMC. however, the Captain gave us an extra hour at HMC and then we headed to Grand Turk. We were docked by a little after 10 and we were not due until 11:00 AM. It was a nice warm day in Grand Turk. It sure beat snow! Last night we put the clock ahead one Hour and today we backed into Amber Cove. Ir is sunny and warm and I have not yet left the Ship. We had 55 at Mass Sunday night and 43 at Mass on Monday at five. I figured with us in port until 5:30PM attendance would be light We had 48 At Mass. Today we sail at 5:30 and I suspect we will be quite busy at the 5PM Mass. That is it for now. I will report in later..

  22. So DH and I are sailing from San Diego on the Ooosterdam on February 29 to Mexico. Decided to haul out my big suitcase, which I haven't used since my last cruise and clean it out. We were on the Koningsdam in January 2019 to the Southern Caribbean, and lo and behold, there's all our paperwork in my suitcase! Thought I would post this deck plan, as after figuring out room locations with the floor by floor view found on CC (what was above, what was below, etc) that this would have been much easier! lol....also found all the When and Where's, a note from our EXC Guide, the card with the names of our room stewards, our final statement....So much fun looking at this, and so many fond memories! L.

  24. Hi Fellow Travelers, I have a party of 4 and would like 4 more to join us on the 8 passenger mini van tour of Rio being offered on the Holland America Cruise Line site. The total trip cost for the group is $839 or $105 per person when the cost is shared. This for the tour on March 29th and is an all day tour, which I think is necessary. There is so much to see in Rio. Let me know if you are interested and I'll book the tour. Al
