  1. We are sailing at the end of June and we deliberately did something we have never done - booked an inside room. Ordinarily we book verandas, but at that time of the year it is light almost all night and we wanted a dark room for sleep. This means I will be spending more time outside our cabin reading or just watching the scenery. Where is your favorite spot to sit and quietly read? Is there a library or place to lounge that is relatively quiet. I am usually up early and go read the paper and have coffee until my spouse gets up. Have never been on this ship and it is a short cruise (7 days) and I thought I could ask this experienced crowd so I don't find some great spot on the last day :-).
  2. I know that ship doesn't have as many dining options as some of the newer ships. What are our options for embarkation lunch, and what would be your choice? Any special "not to be missed" menu items we should watch for? Thanks in advance!
  3. Here is the latest update of the Dry Dock, Charter and Groups file. The file consists of information gathered from the internet or information kindly posted on these threads by other cruisers and should not be considered a complete indicator of group activity. If you have information about groups charters or dry docks then please post here and I will update in the next file. 4. I’m on the verge of leaving on a round trip Transatlantic. The eastbound is on Holland America’s newest ship the Nieuw Statendam leaving Fort Lauderdale and ending May 5 in Amsterdam. It’s more than a direct way home but I board Queen Victoria in Kiel, Germany May 9 for a short 3-day cruise to Southampton (with a stop in Skagen) where I transfer May 12 to QM2. https://www.cunard.com/map/itineraries/V911B/images/en_GB_V911B_desktop_1x.jpg There’s a short 5-day getaway (Zebrugge and St Peter Port) before continuing on to a transatlantic, getting me back to New York May 24. https://www.cunard.com/map/itineraries/M912/images/en_GB_M912_desktop_1x.jpg For a trip like this I would normally do a thread on each forum as well as a thread covering the entire journey somewhere neutral. I can still do that but my understanding is that the Nieuw Statendam will be pretty much a twin of Cunard’s new ship (Queen Anne?) and there may be some interest on the Cunard forum from that angle. If I do post here I’ll try to envision what differences there would be with an implementation based on Cunard’s values. Assuming this is true I’ll start posting here Good Friday; otherwise you can look for me on May 9. Roy
  5. I will be flying to Fort Lauderdale Good Friday to board the Nieuw Statendam on Easter Sunday. Two weeks later the Nieuw Statendam will have her first visit to her home country and I will be on board. Sadly, that will be a bittersweet moment for me as I will both enjoy the moment but also the sadness of disembarking. Come along with me on this journey. It will be typical of my cruise reports and I’ll have menus and When and Where posted as well as likely additional photos on my companion blog: http://getawaysfrom21044.wordpress.com. While I do fly I don’t like it. Cunard’s next transatlantic is some time after my arrival in Amsterdam so I’ll be extending my time with them for a few days before returning home. I have 2 days in Amsterdam and another 2 in Kiel before boarding Queen Victoria for a short 3-day cruise to Southampton (port:Skagen). Next is a 5-day getaway on QM2 (2nd call to Zebrugge plus St. Peter Port) before my transatlantic starts (May 17-24). When on a multi-line itinerary I tend to report the entire journey on a neutral forum but this time that will be on the Cunard forum as the Nieuw Statendam will be a sister to Cunard’s newest vessel. That thread is: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2655034-qvqm2-kiel-to-new-york-with-a-holland-america-prelude/ Luggage Forward already has one of my bags at their Florida office. Roy
  6. Hello All, I’ve done a keyword search and haven’t found any information on this topic. Is there any way to get the nutritional information about the food served on board? I will be on the Nieuw Statendam for 14 days next month, and I want to be able to track calories, sugars, fats, etc. In the US, the FDA requires restaurants with more than 20 outlets to document their menu items in these ways: Calories from fat Total fat Saturated fat Trans fat Cholesterol Sodium Total carbohydrates Fiber Sugars Protein I’m wondering if similar numbers are available on board HAL’s ships? I know HAL does not have to comply with FDA guidelines—I’m just wondering if maybe they do? Thanks in advance for your responses, Lidja

  8. Hmmm. Was afraid that might be the case.... Well, I do adore Amsterdam, so will try to focus on her positives and figure out a way to be a little more internet-free than I usually am! As said I'm going to post in a few weeks to see if we can get some first hand reports on Amsterdam's wifi in Alaska. Thanks!
  9. Anyone know? I don't remember ever being interested, but now I am... (I'll be on Amsterdam in August, in case that makes a difference) Trying to plan my lunch reservations. I love eating lunch in the Pinnacle, but more on the Vistas than on the smaller ships. Since on Amsterdam the Pinnacle has no windows, I'm not going to do it on "sea days" such as when we are at the glacier, etc. - but probably will on sea days where there isn't much to see... except... sea... So thought I'd add embarkation day lunch, if that's even possible?
  10. Nieuw Statendam wine list at Christmas was sparse. The wine steward kept offering us bottles from a higher level package because they were out of the bottles we wanted. And even then, the reds were almost gone. We got the last bottle of Meomi on board. He commented that there were a lot of wine drinkers on that cruise.
  11. The Nieuw Amsterdam no longer has a decent library; it had been located in the Crow's Nest, but there are few (if any) books left. If you are looking for a quiet place where you can read without noise, the promenade has loungers. You can see the sea so well from that height, too! Watch the pattern of the waves, and look for ocean creatures. I am fond of sitting on the comfy chairs near the Lido Bar. Somehow the noise of the pool area becomes background din, and is unobtrusive. On a sunny day, especially with the dome open a bit, it can be very pleasant. Close to food & drink, too!
  12. RCI have started very early with port bookings for the summer 2020 European season. Port bookings at Gibraltar confirm that Anthem of the Seas will be based out of Southampton for the summer season in 2020 along with Indy. Jewel appears on May 5th and it is unclear if this is maybe a post dry dock re-entry to the MED or if the ship is heading out from the MED to another home port for summer of 2020. As Brilliance is booked at both Grand Cayman in 2021 and has a September 2020 at Gibraltar it looks like she will stay on the same pattern with Amsterdam and then later a Barcelona mini-season. Even with this early start it would seem that they are still booking Celebrity and some remaining Azamara before they really get serious with Royal port bookings.
  13. Good afternoon everyone, We have just returned from our second ever cruise, which was on P&O Azura and we are now considering trying MSC for a change. We have been looking at a cruise for next year to Bruges, Amsterdam and France Etc. We have obviously not tried MSC before and know very little about this company or the ship, so any hints, tips and reviews would be very gratefully received Especially if you have recently returned from the Preziosa. Thank you.
  14. We have been on many cruises ( over 30) including 2 river cruises. Considering trying Holland America (Nieuw Statendam) and would appreciate information. Is it non smoking in the casino? ( hope so) What are the dining and show times? Do they supply robes? I'm sure I’ll think of other questions. Thank you
  15. Yhank you for the report. The Nieuw Amsterdam is on the inside Passage and the Volendam is sailing the waters of Glacier Bay National Park, the Highlight of an inside Passage Cruise. Not every cruise line is able to get permits to sail into Glacier Bay.
  16. Always nice to go on the newest ship in the fleet & this itinerary certainly seems ideal to experience it. We hope our CC friends have a great time in ports and on board and, of course, we wish them safe travels, fair winds & smooth seas. Bon Voyage to Nieuw Statendam - 7 night Viking Sagas: qoap24 Bon Voyage qoap24!!!!! Have a great cruise and a WONDERFUL time!!!!!!
  17. Moriah, I'm afraid there's no simple answer to your questions. Certainly satellite internet is subject to vagaries in coverage areas, weather and physical blockages (deep fjords for example), and should not be expected to work as well as land based services. However, my experience, and some of the other posts here suggest that it's not just the remote locations . I noted one post that stated poor service in the Med, between Spain and Italy - not what I'd call remote! My thought, after 30 years in the tech world, is that Amsterdam may have some outdated technology, and certainly needed much more capacity. For your trip, you may want to invest in a 1 day package (despite the outrageous cost) as a test, or simply talk to other passengers first. Enjoy the trip!
  18. We sailed on Koningsdam in 2016 and hoped that we could do the excursion during the day time and dance after dinner or theater shows. The bands there were not knowledgeable on ballroom music tempo. If you like disco music, or just move your body on the dance floor, BB King Blue band is for you. But not for us. So, we had the most boring cruise in our experience and we swore that we would not go back to Koningsdam. We told our dance friends not to bother with this ship although the food offered in the MDR was not bad. HAL has a new ship, Nieuw Statendam in 2018. I notice that HAL made some changes and anticipate some changes made. I talked to my DH and thought that we may try the new ship since I really like the dance floor on the Queen's Lounge. After I read this CC review on Nieuw Statendam, I don't think we will try the new ship. It seems that HAL didn't change at all. I share his frustration. https://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=653027
  19. Oh my. I will be on Amserdam in August for 2 weeks and was getting excited to use the "unlimited" package.. but if it's not going to work I may just settle for using free wifi in ports. If these problems are fleet-wide, that is really bad news for getting people like the OP back to HAL! My question is, however, how much are these problems related to the location of the ship (any ship) at a given time, and how much is the problem the service itself? In other words, the more remote the location, the worse it is? Or is it just that the ship is not set up with powerful enough internet service? I will post in a few weeks asking if people on Amsterdam this summer in Alaska are having similar problems to those you experienced on the world voyage. (Must have been SO frustrating! My sympathy! :()
  20. Report # 1 Ready – set – go January 15, 2019 Tuesday Rainy and 55 degrees Usually by now, we would be sailing southwest towards French Polynesia or the Hawaiian Islands as we begin the circumnavigation of the globe. However, we are starting three weeks later, on January 22nd instead. You may ask why? Well, we assume by popular request, the final segment will be northern Europe, not an area normally visited on a grand voyage. At least, not for the Holland America Line in recent years. The Amsterdam will be heading that way towards the third week of April, which should present us with cool temperatures, but on the way towards springtime. So where else are we going? After boarding in Ft. Lauderdale, we will have stops in Santa Marta, Colombia and the San Blas Islands, Panama. The ship will transit the Panama Canal, with an overnight visit in Fuerte Amador (Panama City), Panama. Salaverry, Peru is the next stop, followed by two full days in Callao (Lima), Peru. Arica, Chile, will be the final port before we head west for another Chilean visit….Easter Island, a most unique place in the Pacific. On the way towards French Polynesia, we will drop anchor at Pitcairn Island, which is loaded with history. Hopefully, the natives will be able to bring their treasures onboard to sell. The most beautiful ports in Polynesia will be Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, where we cross the International Date Line, thus losing one full day of the calendar. No worries, however, since Captain Mercer always promises to give back all of those missing hours one at a time before returning to Florida. There is only one stop in Tonga….no Fiji or Papua New Guinea this year. Heading south, we will visit Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, and Picton….all in New Zealand. Then going west, the next ports will be two days in Sydney, Townsville, Cairns, and Darwin….all in Australia. Then things get exotic such as stops in Komodo, Bali, and Semarang in Indonesia. Mid-March finds us in Singapore for two days, but no Hong Kong this time. Again, some favorite places have to be skipped to make time for northern Europe. Sri Lanka and two ports in India follow….namely Cochin and Mumbai. Then it is off for two days in Aqaba, Jordan with a transit through the Suez Canal. This will find the ship in the Mediterranean, but with only a few ports. We will head directly for Italy with a visit to Naples, followed by Barcelona and Cadiz, Spain. This is where the cruise turns north going to Lisbon, Portugal. One more visit to Leixoes in Portugal, and we sail to Cherbourg, France. A stop in Zeebrugge, Belgium, will give all a chance to see Brussels. One port in the Netherlands will be Amsterdam, then it is off to Copenhagen, Denmark. Cruising Oslofjord, we will stop in Oslo, Norway. Then off to Flam, viewing the Sognefjord in Norway. Portree Scotland will be a first for us, as will be Belfast, Ireland. We have been to Dublin and Cobh, Ireland, but it has been many years ago. The final European port will be Bantry in Ireland. Transatlantic sailing will bring us to Ft. Lauderdale, and going home for most. The two of us will be sailing onward towards Seattle, with stops in Colombia, the Panama Canal again, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, San Francisco, Victoria and Vancouver, Canada, and finally Seattle, where we fly home to SF on June 3rd. Great way to spend the first half of the year, right? In the meantime, much of the in-and-around the house chores have kept us busy. A couple of years ago, we had a 40 year old pine tree decide to kick the bucket. Figured it was a good time to have it taken down before it crashed the house and blocked the driveway. Splitting and stacking the future firewood was accomplished by the more industrious one of us. The other one of us has been occupied whipping up some new clothes for the trip, making good use of the fabric shopping abroad. Still trying to figure out what to do with the waxed fabric from Africa….. Our four duffels have made their way to Florida. Normally we track them from day one, only to be frustrated as they sometimes separate and go different ways. As we don’t need any extra worries, this time we waited until they all arrived four days later. Where they went in the interim, it doesn’t matter, since they are where they need to be. Now the last of the concerns has to do with the situation with the airport security check, namely the TSA agents. Due to the recent government partial shutdown, the security teams have been slow or missing in action. There is no control over this, so we simply pray for the best. Going to the airport very early is another option, which we have already planned to do. In addition, this is another reason we spend three nights in Ft. Lauderdale prior to a long cruise. It gives us a little wiggle room for possible delays. Bad weather this time of year comes to mind as well. So the next time you hear from us will be either at the airport, if we get stuck (heaven forbid), or when we check into the hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. Looking forward to an exciting trip! To be continued….. Bill & Mary Ann PS This is where you can find the blog complete with photos when it is available: https://cruisingwithbillandmaryann.blogspot.com

  22. The info below describes our experiences while on ms Amsterdam, World Voyage - Sydney to Ft. Lauderdale, March 6 - May 16th. I can't comment on whether it was unique to the vessel, or fleet-wide. The service (premium) can only be described as abysmal - clearly a huge lack of capacity and vastly oversold. Outages (significant - multi-hour): March 16, 17, 18, 19, April 17, 25, May 16. Basically unusable service - frequently couldn’t even load email, Skype fails all day due to weak signal, 5 minutes to load a simple web site, NY Times (free) not accessible: April 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 27, May 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16 (at FLL pier!). April 18 apology note, promising “proportional” compensation. April 27, credited $33. Paid $930 for three legs. April 19 - 24 some improvement (note CEO joined the cruise 4/18). April 28 - May 4 emails suddenly fail constantly, won’t send from any device or user id. Web browsing ok. Email works fine on shore, multiple tests. Advised by staff that “some providers don’t work (examples Comcast, Bell Canada) - no fix - it may come back” !! (Returns May 4). Service levels improved somewhat on May 5, but video calling still fractured on the occasions when it worked. CEO advised passengers in his address that this level of service was "not where they want to be", "takes time", and is an "industry-wide problem". I totally disagree - this was clearly a capacity issue at many times - the difference in speed between 3am (when most are asleep) and 8am was massive. I did not find the 500MB throttle point an issue, but that is in part because video calling was so restricted. Updating apps resulted in throttling, and even worse speed. When you advertise video calling, but the system won’t even handle email, it is worthless. Pitiful service - I had blazing fast satellite (not cellular) service on a HAL tour bus in Jordan, which decayed to zero when I walked 50 feet from the bus to the ship and connected to the HAL service. As you can tell, I was less than impressed - hope this helps somewhat. Would you post the lines that have provided you with acceptable service? That would be useful. HAL Internet Access.pdf
  23. Our cruise originates in Seattle, and I'd like to buy a bunch of flowers at Pike's Market for our cabin. Will HAL allow us to bring fresh flowers on board when we embark? If it matters, the ship is the Amsterdam. Thanks!
  24. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING - Updated May 24th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours).
