  1. Day #1 - After a leisurely breakfast on the 23rd floor of the Pan Pacific, we rolled our luggage downstairs to the co-located Canada Place cruise ship terminal (the hotel has a dedicated "cruise ship level" elevator.) It was an easy hop, skip and a roll to the porters. From there, it was the actual cruise ship check-in which, with four ships in port, was a busy affair. After check-in, it was a bit of a "zig-zag livestock style" meander to get to shore-side security screening of individuals and carry-on luggage, and then another "hurry up and wait" for pre-clearance border screening, not by Canadian CBSA, but by officers of the United States Customs & Border Protection (CBP). You see, the United States federal government operates border pre-clearance facilities at a number of ports and airports in foreign territory. The process is intended to streamline border procedures, reduce congestion at U.S. ports of entry, and facilitate travel between the pre-clearance location and U.S. ports of entry unequipped to handle international travelers. After the obligatory welcome aboard pic by the ship's photographers (hey, no one is holding a knife to your throat to later purchase these pics!), we took one of Nieuw A's scenic elevators to Deck 7 and to our floating crib. Dropped off the carry-on's and headed for the Lido Marker for a salad and soup lunch. As we were leaving the abode, our luggage was delivered pronto; fast service by Nieuw A's Housekeeping Dept.! The 4:00 PM mandatory passenger emergency safety drill was one of the fastest and most efficient "mustard" drills that we've seen in twenty-seven years of cruising. Everyone showed up, got scanned in by the asst. boat commander and, at least as was the case with our boat, #10, paid attention/quit flapping their lips" as Captain Marco Carsjens and CD Rebecca read their safety and health schpiel via the ship's P/A system. We were dismissed exactly nineteen minutes after arriving, a fact which drew an applause from many of our fellow shipmates! Impressive feat! After unpacking, we did some jelling and vegging until it was time for dinner (we chose a casual one in the Lido and had Rigatoni). From there, it was a beeline for the last portion of the first set (8:30 PM) of the B.B. King's All-Star Band which, we found out, was standing room only, not one available seat in in the house! The band sounded spectacular as usual, with lead female singer Stephanie Bolton standing out. We stuck around for the entire second set (were able to locate two front row seats) and then finished up the night with the two Billboard Onboard pianists/vocalists Ivy and Jonathan. The main entertainment in the show lounge tonite was the movie "Avengers Endgame"starting at 8:30 PM Pic is the reason behind this ship's name prominently displayed opposite the Deck 2 port-side scenic elevators. New York City's nick name "The Big Apple" was first popularized in the 1920s by John J. FitzGerald, a sports writer for the New York Morning Telegraph.
  2. My d/w and I will be finishing a transatlantic and Norway fiord cruise aboard the Niew Statendam in Early May 2020 and am having a hard time with post cruise hotel in Amsterdam. Will probably stay in the city 3 days or so. Can anyone recommend a hotel central location that doesn’t break the bank?
  3. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Monday is looking to be the nicest day of the week with a 0% chance of rain and a high of 63F/17C but a chilly low of 44F/7C. Sunrise is at 5:28 am and sunset at 8:33 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  4. Hi,Marella didn't disguise anything. After all the complaints on P and O,I looked up the docking locations for Explorer and Ijmuden and Amsterdam both came up.That's when I realised there was a mini cruise before ours, but on the TUI site it does say Ijmuden for Amsterdam, but this might be a recent edit, with all the complaints going on about Carnival Corp boycotting Amsterdam.Cheers,Brian.
  5. Hi. We recently did a 7 night Danube cruise on Crystal Mozart and had a great time. We are contemplating to do an another Crystal river cruise, perhaps in 2021. We think we would like to cruise on the Rhine next, probably in the fall (before the Christmas Market prices kick in). We are thinking about the 7 night Amsterdam to Basel, or the reverse. It appears the ports of calls are identical whether it is southbound or northbound. Has any of you done one or both of these cruises on the Rhine? Is there a not-so-obvious pros/cons of the southbound vs. northbound? Our initial thought is that we would prefer northbound because then we can spend a few days in Basel (where we have never been) before the cruise, and am hoping that there are more convenient flights out of Amsterdam (where we have done most of the typical sights before) if we want to fly home at the end of the cruise.
  6. Day 6 - 08/15/2019; Ketchikan, AK; Ketchikan is located on Revillagigedo Island (named in 1793 by Captain George Vancouver), 700 miles north of Seattle, WA, and 235 miles south of Juneau, AK. in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, the southeastern most city in Alaska. Ketchikan’s maritime heritage is proudly reflected in its nickname: “The Salmon Capital of the World”, and the region’s history runs deep in cultural and geological evidence that is still vibrant today. With a population at the 2010 census of 8,050 within its city limits, it is the sixth-most populous city in the state. So, on Thursday morning Nieuw A. left Clarence Strait behind and came sailing down Tongass Narrows, the Y-shaped channel at 1000 hours, passed Guard Island, eventually Ketchikan International Airport. Upon arrival at Ketchikan proper, she then got ready to take her place at port side alongside at Berth #2 out of the four cruise ship berths, along Front Street. We were safely docked by 1100 hrs. Behind us at Berth #3 Ruby Princess was already alongside. Ruby’s fleet mate Royal Princess was at Berth #4 (1000-1800) and in front of us at Berth #1 (0700-1315) was our older sister Eurodam (0700-1200). About 40 miles east of the City of Ketchikan lays Misty Fjord (or Misty Fjords) National Monument administered by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Tongass National Forest. The region was first visited by Europeans in 1793 when that British dude, Captain George Vancouver, explored up Behm Canal, the prominent sea-filled glacial trough along the western margin of the monument separating it from Revillagigedo Island. Because of the remoteness of the area, most visitors arrive by boat or aircraft from Ketchikan or Juneau. More adventurous travelers choose an overnight charter service or spend days exploring by kayak. We had purchased a shorex by the name of Misty Fjords and Wilderness Explorer by Allen Marine with a 12:30 PM departure from the Ryus Float at the north end and opposite Berth #1 where the 150-passenger water-jet powered catamaran St, Aquilina was waiting. This was a 4.5-hour exploration of the forested mountain slopes, rocky shores, steep cliff walls and waterfalls of the fjord while sailing the Revillagigedo Channel, Behm Canal, and Rudyerd Bay. Every seat on the cat had a pair of binoculars as well as a map of Misty Fjords National Monument with our route high-lighted with a magic marker by a deck crew member. This would be the only day of this cruise where the weather was not that great, no rain but a constant mist that had a notable effect on the visibility within Misty Fjord. St. Aquilina had a great crew, starting with her captain and deck crew, her naturalist/commentator (from Agoura Hills/Los Angeles), her galley crew and her Tlingit native artist. During the trip, the galley crew served up donut holes, hot chocolate and a choice of clam chowder or vegetarian chili. We got a look at New Eddystone Rock, a volcanic spire rising from the water, a sea lion colony taking a nap, a Tlingit pictograph, and we had a stop at a Bald Eagle’s nest (no one was home) Back onboard Nieuw A, she let go of her lines around 7:00 PM and then began her high-speed run back to Vancouver, BC. We had our last “specialty restaurant” dinner at 7:30 PM, this one inside Canaletto. The menu has changed in there, even since Koningsdam in March. At 8:30 PM, there was an “Orange Party,” now apparently a regular event on all dam ships. It is basically an onboard celebration inspired by King’s Day, the Netherland’s national holiday. Orange is the color most associated with the Netherlands and the House of Orange, Holland’s royal family. The event took place in the BB King’s Blues Club with the band of the same name providing dance music and there were Dutch-inspired appetizers, beer, cocktails, plus a festive display of national pride with a sea of orange! 9:30 PM found us in Main Stage for the stand-up comedy of Kristen Key. She uses a guitar to create original musical comedy and had some funny moments, one of them being a short video of a day in the life of a HAL towel animal. Tomorrow will be our last day – time flies on seven-day cruises – on this journey while transiting Canada’s Inside Passage. Pic is a look at the awesome Nieuw Amsterdam mural in the Deck 2 starboard aft Explorers Lounge
  7. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated August 16th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 8. We will be flying from the US to Amsterdam Schiphol, but cruising out of Rotterdam. We will be staying in a Rotterdam hotel (not yet selected), for 2 or 3 days before our Oct 3, 2020 cruise on the Rotterdam for 29 days. What is the best transportation from Schiphol to a downtown Rotterdam hotel ? There will be 4 of us. We are considering staying in the SS Rotterdam Hotel, which is the old HAL cruise ship which is now a museum and hotel. But the main concern is decent transportation from Schiphol to Rotterdam.
  9. We are traveling with carry-on luggage only. My suitcase is very lightweight nylon, with no structure to it. It is a carry over shoulder and convert to backback style (about 22 pounds). My question is: Can I carry it on? The bag would be squished if piled with other luggage on top of it. I have had my flatiron for my hair damaged before.
  10. We will be disembarking Viking cruise in Amsterdam in June. Our flight leaves AMS 2:50 pm on day of disembarkation. Are there any tour options that would let us see a bit of Amsterdam before flight time? I've read that Viking does not offer any.
  11. Hello All, As I look at last minute cruises to Alaska, there are a few boats (like the Nieuw Amsterdam) that stop cruising earlier than others. The NA's last cruise, as an example, leaves on 08/31 while others continue through September. I understand the general pros/cons of an Alaska cruise in September. My general question revolves around any concerns with sailing that "last cruise" in a given area? As an example, since the next step would (presumably) be a re-positioning activity of some kind, might they be "skimping" a bot on provisions, stocking up the galley, etc or perhaps looking at crew changes so folks might be "phoning it in" a bit? Anyway, just wondering your thoughts on this?

  13. I confess to being a Celebrity "lifer". However, we have booked a transatlantic on the Nieuw Statendam and have a question about the cabin as I can't find any info on line. Cabin number is 5225 which is a category VS aft facing. Does anyone have any info on this cabin? TYIA
  14. Well I'm happy to pay it - absolute bargain in my book compared with the hassle of the transfer from Ijmuiden. Pity Carnival took a different stance cancelling berthing in central Amsterdam - principle over passengers imo creating a lot of disappointment for those who'd booked expecting an overnight in the city. We're lucky - am very happy to pay €8 extra! Sorry Marella didn't offer that convenience on your trip Stephen. Perhaps unable to secure a berth that day? Hope you enjoy your day anyway.
  15. On the larger ships, the NY Pizza makes individual-size pizzas to your specifications (choice and quantity of ingredients) and even provides a carry-out box if you want to take it to your room. The two largest HAL ships also have sandwiches. Here is the menu from the Nieuw Amsterdam (located on the Deck 9 by the outdoor aft pool): http://www.rogerjett-photography.com/photo-reviews/ms-nieuw-amsterdam-on-board-images/nieuw-amsterdam-dining-2/nieuw-amsterdam-dining-ny-pizza Here is the menu for the Konigsdam, including sandwiches (located above the indoor pool on Deck 9): http://www.rogerjett-photography.com/here/wp-content/gallery/ms-konigsdam-dining-options/IMG_2258-Edit-2.jpg
  16. Hi everyone! We're on the HAL Nieuw Statendam Mediterranean Mosaic Sept. 27 to Oct. 7. We fly out Oct. 7 from Rome back to the US. This means we need to do our flight check in on Oct. 6 when we're in Naples. I'm assuming we'll find Wi-Fi somewhere so we can take care of this on the airline app. What if we can't? Just trying to cover my "what if" items here, thanks! JoAnne
  17. Hello, We will be sailing from Venice to Barcelona on the Nieuw Amsterdam for our anniversary. Which side of the ship should we choose our cabin for the best views? Thanks Bunches For Your Help
  18. We did this itinerary from Amsterdam to Basel, and if you have enough days I would recommend that direction. Here's why: Amsterdam has lots of flights, so the chances of a delay impacting your vacation are less. Also Amsterdam is very easy to get around (e.g. while jet-lagged), so you can make the most out of your time there. And IME Amsterdam keeps popping up on itineraries, so I expect to be back there again to complete anything I miss on a given trip. Switzerland, OTOH, is harder to get to so I wanted to make sure I was able to see everything that was planned – doing it at the end of the cruise meant we were fresh and rested [well, more so than after a flight over the pond]. Full disclosure: we actually flew to Amsterdam on the day of our cruise – and thankfully that flight was on time – but that was the last trip where we didn't fly in a day early and we have now upped that comfort zone to 2 days early to make sure our luggage has a chance to find us and our brains have a chance to clear! That strategy fits with starting in Amsterdam, for the reasons I laid out above.
  19. Just back from a Cruise through the Fjords of Norway on board the Nieuw Statendam. A few thoughts: Embarkation: A rather long wait- but that might be because we picked a peek time – all in all well handled from HAL Ship: The Nieuw Statendam is just no our ship- to dark – to loud in some places. No deckchairs on the promenade deck- not even in some places. The wrap around pormmenade deck is nice - but the view blockes from the lifeboats. The most irritating part is the Lido – Buffet- Restaurant. The chairs and tables are by the windows- the style of said chairs and tables – well that’s a kind of “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"- for us it was the 70´s gone very wrong! The most disturbing fact of the Lido- Restaurant is that the waiting area in front of the stations doubles as walkway to the aft poo ldeck- so there was always “ traffic”- lot´s of people bumped into each other- the ones carrying their food to the tables and others walking through. The Dutch Café and Explorations – Crow´s Nest are both wonderful and nice places- nicely furnished too- both are self service- which is - in my book anyway- a deal- breaker. Especially in the Dutch Café- which is a very nice place - but way to small- waiter service would be much better- I witnessed some passengers struggling carrying their coffee- tea or whatever to their tables- some spilling their contents, some smashing vase´s in placing the stuff on the table. If you are so lucky to get a table, you had to put some stuff at the table- to mark it – “ in use”- ( so we turned into table- and chair hogs…) otherwise you get your stuff at the counter and are at loss where to put it- if there is no table or seat – happened to us twice- and we ended up at the bar- not a problem- but not very comfortable and not my idea of a Café! Oh just to mention it we are not yet in our dotting years- early 50s! The food in all Restaurants and especially in Rudi´s and the Pinnancle Grill were outstanding good. The service likewise. No complaints here! We had a verandah cabin on Deck 5- 5051- perfect location - perfect and extra large balcony- wonderful- the best bathroom i ever had on boad a ship- with the exception of Queen Mary2´s new single stateroom bathrooms. Would we sail HAL again- well- maybe on boad of one of the older ships- and if they change to table service in the Dutch Cafe and Explorations- for the time beeing it is either Cunard or Celebrity.
  20. We are going to be in Amsterdam on 5/3/20 and we are interested in going to Keukenhof to see the tulips. My daughter is a fulltime wheelchair user but there are family members to assist. Any recommendations on the best way to get there from the ship? Thanks!!
  21. We're booked for 01/12/2021 on the Nieuw Amsterdam. The $25,00 PP deposit came in handy because we have just paid off a Celebrity cruise.
  22. I realize that people with serious food allergies are pro-active about their needs, but just in case … We were on the Amsterdam in Alaska July 29 - August 12. Overall, it was a great cruise but we had several issues with the food. The most serious: nuts were an ingredient in several soups & appetizers & desserts, without being listed on the menu. AND our waiters had no idea they were included, either. As part of our discussions with them, and with the MDR mgrs, we learned that the ingredients listed on the menu are frequently different from those listed in the actual recipes the chefs use to prepare the food. Never take the descriptions on the menu as gospel, nor what the waiters may tell you. Please notify the Special Needs Department/Food & Beverage/etc of any allergies BEFORE GETTING ON BOARD, and remind them again at every meal. If you make reservations for specialty restaurants let them know WHEN YOU MAKE THE RESERVATIONS.
  23. The Baltics is always a wonderful itinerary offering so much. The magic of St. Petersburg, the beauty of Tallin and the wonderful scenery approaching Sweden are just some of the wonders that await our CC friends. We hope they enjoy every moment of the magic, beauty and history and, of course we wish them safe travels, fair winds and smooth seas. Have a great cruise and a WONDERFUL time!!!!!
  24. Bo - you may have already noticed the stickies on the home page posted by Host Jazzbeau. If not, make sure you don't miss them, especially: Our first river cruise was on Uniworld in 2015 after doing absolutely no research. My brother and sister-in-law asked if we wanted to go on a 2 week river cruise (Budapest to Amsterdam) on Uniworld with them and her 82 year old mom. We were game even though we had never heard of Uniworld since like many Americans all we ever saw at that time were commercials for Viking. I asked how they picked the line and they replied that a friend of mom's at the gym highly recommended them. When we were on the ship I said she needed to thank her friend for the recommendation. She looked at me and said "I don't remember who it was, just some guy at the gym!" We went and had a wonderful time and have taken 2 more river cruises with Uniworld and they have taken 4 more since then.
