  1. Can anyone tell me where exactly the P&O Shuttle drops off and picks up in Amsterdam City? Many thanks.
  2. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated October 18th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 3. DH wants to bring a 6 pack of Pepsi on our next cruise, which is on HAL Nieuw Amsterdam. As we understand it, they do not carry Pepsi, only Coke products. Does anyone know if this is allowed? Thanks.
  4. Link to pictures for this review (once accessed, click "slideshow"). https://smengelt.shutterfly.com/4464 We recently returned from Viking’s Rhine Getaway with Lucerne extension. This was our sixth Viking River cruise. As returning Viking customers, we were curious as to whether or not there would be any deterioration in the Viking product due to their rapid expansion over the past several years. Our worries were unfounded as this was one of the best cruises we’ve taken with Viking yet. In fact, in addition to the Viking program that we’ve enjoyed in the past, we noticed several subtle but nice improvements in the Viking product during our trip which tells me as a company they are listening to customers and always looking to do better. We booked through an agent nine months prior to the cruise during a promotion including a very low air fare. We included Viking’s two day extension in Lucerne hoping to experience the culture of Switzerland (which we did and then some). Our flights were non-stop to Amsterdam and returning from Zurich. We were met by Viking representatives (there were multiple cruises leaving that day) immediately upon exiting baggage and waited with our group about 45 minutes for several other flights to arrive before heading off to the ship. The Viking representatives helped some find ATMs, restrooms, etc. during our wait. We arrived at the ship, Viking Tialfi, which was docked directly across from Amsterdam’s central train station, a prime location for getting on/off and walking the streets of Amsterdam. Many rooms were available upon arrival at around 11:15AM, a few had to wait up to an hour but this was a nice improvement over past cruises where we had to wait until 3PM for rooms to be available (and they used to make everyone wait until all rooms were available). We had time to unpack prior to a wonderful two hour welcome walk around Amsterdam. We set sail at 11:30PM, so anyone wishing to experience Amsterdam had plenty of time during the rest of the day to explore the city. Several people wanted to visit the Anne Frank house and were advised that on a Saturday in the summer, advanced tickets were almost a requirement but you could walk (30 minutes) and see if possibly you could get in. Others ventured off to museums. Since we’d been to Amsterdam previously, we stayed onboard and relaxed after our long day/flight. The crew on Viking Tialfi was outstanding! From the captain to the housekeeping staff, all were helpful, friendly and seemed to be a happy crew that got along well with each other. On a smaller ship, it becomes very apparent when this is not the case. Interestingly, several we spoke with came from large ocean cruise lines and stated were very happy working for Viking. Boyan, the Program Director, was outstanding and seemed to be all places all of the time, had a great sense of humor and was very good about setting expectations. Igor, the Maitre d’ was very personable and readily assisted us in several situations in the dining room. Joanna, our housekeeping attendant was excellent and kept our cabin spotless. Our one previous experience on a “long ship” was in the winter during a Christmas Market cruise. We were looking forward to enjoying the Sun deck and during our journey it did not disappoint. Seating (much of it under shade) was plentiful and the weather cooperated all week to be able to spend a lot of time there when sailing. We had a balcony cabin and one change from our previous long ship experience was the translucent wall in the bathroom was history. I know many did not like it and wonder if due to responses Viking removed it from all of their new ships, not a big deal for us. The rest of the ship seemed pretty much the same, just with different finishes. The crowd on board was mostly American with a few other nationalities represented. I would say based upon our conversations and number attending the Viking Explorer Society (repeat cruisers) cocktail reception that 90% were first time river cruisers. The ship was fully booked. Instead of eating in the formal dining room every night, we changed it up a bit this cruise. We ate in the dining room three times, off ship twice, and the remainder dined in the Aquavit Terrace. The Aquavit Terrace menu has been updated since our last trip to offer more options, another nice improvement. You can now get always available entrée items which weren’t available several years ago. We thought the food during the entire trip was great and really do love Viking’s soups. This trip, the duck cheese soup was our favorite. When eating in the dining room, we noticed the wait staff using hand held devices to place our orders, this was new to us and it seemed to move dinner along nicely, another positive improvement. Wine and beer flowed freely (sometimes too freely :D ) at lunch and dinner. We loved this itinerary for a number of reasons. First, scenic cruising was excellent especially if you like castles, churches and beautiful rural countryside. Second, it is varied in options available for touring. Castles, churches, medieval towns, the Black Forest, wine tasting and general history, something for everyone. Another great improvement we appreciated was the quality of maps now provided by Viking of our destinations, much improved over those we’ve received in the past as in color and very detailed. Tour groups are divided up into A, B, C, D, etc., and each day you could end up in a different group. That said, if you were travelling with a group, Viking ensured that you were all together on a given tour. Our guides varied from great to OK. We were always told at the beginning of the tour where/when to meet for return for the ship. This is great for those who want to go off on their own, which we did in Kinderdijk and Colmar. We did our own thing in Cologne (as had been there before), skipped Heidelberg as had been there before, and instead stayed onboard and enjoyed five relaxing hours of scenic cruising the Rhine. At every location we had a prime docking location which made it easy to get on/off and do your own thing if desired. Highlights for us were Kinderdijk, Strasbourg, Cologne (one of our favorite cities and returning in December on our own for the Christmas markets) where we went to the Lindt Chocolate Museum on our own and visited "the Dom", Speyer where after our day of scenic cruising while others were in Heidelberg, we went to the Speyer Technik Museum which was awesome if you like planes, old cars, the space shuttle and anything technically oriented. We had two optional tours, the dine-out in Rudesheim which was a wonderful evening in a quaint, outdoor restaurant with music and fun times, and also took the optional visit to the village of Colmar. Post cruise we opted for the Lucerne extension provided by Viking. On Wednesday evening of the cruise, those with optional extensions were given a thorough briefing on the logistics and expectations. Our bus left the ship around 9AM for the drive to Lucerne. Prior to arriving at Hotel Astoria, our hotel, we stopped at the Lion Monument in Lucerne. Upon arriving at hotel our bags were taken and personal items were locked in a meeting room and we met our Viking host for our stay Maria, who was wonderful during our two day stay. While waiting for rooms to be ready Maria took us on a walking tour of Lucerne, a beautiful city. Positives re: Hotel Astoria were its location and it was clean. Otherwise rooms were average size and stark (think modern). The layout of the hotel was funky in that there were numerous levels from the ground floor. Finding breakfast the first morning was like playing “Where’s Waldo” but once we found it, the breakfast buffet itself was excellent. There was also occasionally loud music in the evening (never did exactly figure out where it was coming from). We had heard before that there are only five hotels in Lucerne with air-conditioning so it’s not like there are a lot of options. During our stay we really weren’t in the hotel that much as after walking tour we went out on our own, ate dinner in town on the water, and took the 12.5 hour optional tour “Pearls of Switzerland” tour the second day so the hotel itself wasn’t a big deal for us, it sufficed. The last day of our journey was spent on Viking’s Pearls of Switzerland optional tour, and while a long day, was a really great way to discover Switzerland and the Swiss way of life. We started out leaving the hotel and taking a short walk to the cruise terminal to board our boat for a tour of Lake Lucerne (four stops about an hour) to Alpnachstad where we disembarked and boarded the cogwheel train and climbed Mount Pilatus. We had about two hours on top of Mount Pilatus with lunch on our own (started out cloudy but eventually sun broke through – stunning views) before descending the mountain via two sets of gondolas to an awaiting bus. We then bussed through beautiful countryside to Einsiedeln where we visited the Abbey and viewed the Black Madonna. Free time allowed for touring the Abbey grounds or walking to the adjacent town for shopping or bite to eat. We then traveled to a Swiss alpine farm and learned about the Swiss milk industry (grass fed cows) which was very interesting and informative. The final stop of the day was back in Einsiedeln at the local cheese factory (a year old co-op with 128 local owners), toured the factory, actually made cheese, and had a nice fondue dinner. We arrived back at the hotel at around 9:30PM. A long but very rewarding day. The following morning about 25 of us left for by bus at 6:45 AM for the Zurich airport (the hotel opened the buffet breakfast for us early). A Viking representative met us at the Zurich airport and guided each group to the ticket counter of their departure carrier. The trip was over and we were already talking about where to go on our next Viking cruise. Viking provides an excellent product and continues to tweak it to make it even better. We purchased a future cruise credit ($100 for $200 credit) which can be applied to a future Viking river or ocean cruise (can only use one per person per cruise) and has no expiration date.

  6. We just returned from May 7-14, 2016 Alaska cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam. We decided to book a fully obstructed cabin, knowing we just need to see some daylight in our room and would be on other decks of the ship a lot. We were pleasantly surprised with our view in HH 4127: This is at the back of a lifeboat. Note that there are three taller tenders on each side of the ship that would obstruct your view further. The window is floor to ceiling but does not open. Hope that helps a future cruiser in this type of cabin. Cheers! klvn8r
  7. I noticed the Amsterdam cruises tend to be two full days now. When we went right into Amsterdam it was a day and a half - this explains it! Sounds like P&O have it much better organised now.
  8. I just have to ask, or else I better find the recipe myself... Does anyone have a recent experience to report about escargot being served in the MDR? In August, on the Amsterdam, they were not on the menu at all in MDR. We are just off the Oosterdam, and they were offered, but were not the traditional buttery, cheesy, garlicy wonderfulness that we're used to. Has anyone had old school HAL escargot recently?
  9. Veendam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0530-1700. She will be heading out on a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise (this was originally scheduled to be a Cuban cruise until that came to an abrupt halt). Key West, Florida (24 Oct 0800-1700); George Town, Grand Cayman (26 Oct 0800-1700); Ocho Rios, Jamaica (27 Oct 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (29 Oct 0800-1600); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (30 Oct a0700) Also in port is Majesty OTS at pier 19 from 0600-1600. The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/ and https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/. Also, Zuiderdam will be in Aruba from 1300-2300. https://www.portarubawebcam.com/ Next up: Nieuw Amsterdam on Saturday the 26th.
  10. Here is a sampling from the Nieuw Statendam last week in a VA cabin. Every time I tried to watch the Travel channel it was a show about paranormal activity or poltergeists.
  11. In the case of the Amsterdam and other similar ships with a lot of Vista Suite A category cabins, my guess is all they would need to do is convert about 10 of them in the center on both sides of deck 6 (20 in total) to CO rather than all of them. This would leave plenty of A cabins for those like yourself who didn’t want to pay for the extras. But I must say having a separate anytime dining area would be a nice perk for those VS and SS suite guests who are willing to pay a little extra for a better cabin location, canapés around 4 or 5, priority attention during tendering as well as embarkation and disembarkation, and for all OC, NS and PS suite guests anytime dining in the morning and evening without having to wait in line during prime time dining between 6 and 7 pm. But, I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see what the HAL CO visionaries will come up with next.
  12. For our upcoming cruise on Neiuw Amsterdam we were offered a Retreat cabana for extra cost. Does anybody have any insight into this? is it worth it?
  13. Nieuw Amsterdam will be making her first visit to FLL this season and will be at pier 26 (starboard to) from 0530-1700. She is doing a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Fort Lauderdale, Florida (19 Oct d1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (21 Oct 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (22 Oct 1300-2300); St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (23 Oct 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (25 Oct 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (26 Oct a0700) Also in port is Majesty of the Seas at pier 19 from 0600-1600. Zaandam will be in Aruba from 0800-2300. https://www.portarubawebcam.com/ Next up: Zuiderdam on 20 October.
  14. I'm starting a series of cruises which will include a segment from Amsterdam to Basel on the Crystal Bach (after Eastbound TA on QM2 and returning from Barcelona on Crystal Serenity). I do mostly ocean cruising but have a little river experience. My only European river past is in 2004 on Viking, Budapest to Nuremberg but I've also sailed the Nile and Yangtze (both Uniworld) and upper Amazon, plus several North American rivers, mostly on small ocean ships. I'll mention a couple of other Cruise Critic threads I've set up: I'll cover the entire Journey on the Maryland Cruisers forum: I've also set up a thread on the Cunard forum: And I will create one later on the Crystal Forum. I maintain a blog which has the same content plus things like menus and daily schedules: https://getawaysfrom21044.wordpress.com/ I welcome questions but may be slow to answer. Roy
  15. Great...so I like a verandah on deck 6 on the Amsterdam but would have to pay more for it when I’m already 5 star and thisclose to Presidents Club and already have most of those CO benefits? I think not. (BTW, I’ve no interest in a separate area of the dining room which would be about the only “perk” for me.). I just don’t see how this will work other than on the new ships. Those are set up for it; keep it there and leave the others alone for heavens sake. There is so much grumbling about this BS idea that I hope it doesn’t last. But, it’s a great way to chase away a lot of their most loyal cruisers and therefore not have to dole out all our perks for “free” anymore. IMNSHO, HAL gave out too much, too soon and are now stuck. HAL needs to revamp their rewards program big time. Now, I’m not saying to take things away from people that have it but they could “grandfather” those people in. Naturally, there would be some that wouldn’t be happy but something really does need to be done about this. I may not sound nice saying this but if someone comes along and gets priority tendering while I’m stuck on the ship, I’m not going to be happy. And please don’t tell me that they’ve paid for it so should get it. BS! I’ve paid for it over and over many times more than ANY amount they will ever pay. Also, just because other lines do it, why does HAL? Don’t be “lemmings”, HAL! Be unique like you used to be; that’s what drew me to you in the first place and that was back in my 40’s. Yes, you read that right...40’s! Ok, rant over...hope I don’t get flamed but I am entitled to my opinion. Linda R.
  16. Ryndam is booked now almost weekly in Amsterdam from June to October 2021. Looks like she will replace Nieuw Statendam.
  17. My partner Charles and I look forward to another HAL TA crossing. Took the Koningsdam last year and had a wonderful cruise. Great food and service all around. Love the Tamarind Specialty Dining restaurant. This year spending 3 days in Rome pre-embarkation.
  18. HAL Nieuw Amsterdam arrives is Sete at 8 am. My tour begins at 9 and is 15 minutes away by taxi. Will I have enough time? The tour company says yes, that many of their guests are from the cruise ship. It seems doable IF the ship is on time and we can debark quickly. Opinions, please?
  19. I've completed a search with little results -- so I'm posing the question to the community We are looking at HAL New Amsterdam out of Barcelona in April 2020. We'd like to get information about that itinerary --11 Day Ancient Treasures (Barcelona, Sete, Monte Carlo, Florence, Rome, Naples, Tunis & Carthage, Valetta) -- and about HAL in Europe generally Can anyone provide some information - or direct me to where the info might be located?

  21. Looks like American Airlines to London and then maybe KLM to Amsterdam and Copenhagen. I’ve never flown KLM though- any feedback?
  22. Good evening, Jacqui!!! Nancy and I have booked the following: November 10th 2019 Nieuw Statendam 7-days Eastern Caribbean December 7th 2019 Nieuw Amsterdam 7-days Tropical Caribbean thank you doing this!
  23. I board Queen Mary 2 Friday on my way to Europe to start a string of 4 total ships, continuing with Crystal Bach (Amsterdam to Basel), Crystal Serenity (Barcelona to Florida), and finally Crystal Symphony (7-day Caribbean). With the journey divided between 3 Cruise Critic areas I will be posting the journey in 3 separate forums (Cunard, River, and finally Crystal) . I will also cover the entire trip in a single thread on the Maryland Cruisers forum. I'll include a link to that if I can do it within the edit time frame. My companion blog with Daily Programs and menus will be on my usual blog site: http://getawaysfrom21044.wordpress.com This will be my 29th transatlantic, 13th on QM2, and 16th on Cunard (one each QV, QE2, and QE). Roy
  24. I am not a frequent HAL cruiser. Are the internet prices better once you are on board rather than on the HAL website in advance? I will be doing a 7 day Caribbean cruise from FLL.
  25. You don't have to book different airlines if you don't want to. RDU flies direct to Paris on Delta and London on American. From there, you can get a connecting flight to Rome on a codeshare (Air France for Delta, British Airways for American) and its all handled through the original booking and Delta/American will handle any scrambling over missed connections, assuming the miss was their fault. You could also connect domestically through Atlanta, JFK (Delta) Charlotte, or Philly (American) among others, and then take their long haul over to Rome. My wife and I did the RDU-JFK-Rome flights on Delta back for our honeymoon and it was easy. (Return was Venice-overnight in Paris-Atlanta-RDU, because Delta hadn't opened the Paris-Raleigh direct flight, yet) I highly recommend doing the same. (I've also done RDU-Atlanta-Amsterdam with a return of Brussels-Detroit-RDU, and that was easy as well) And I would strongly suggest booking directly through the airline rather than a third party. I've had terrible experiences with Expedia screwing up a name on the reservation and to get it fixed is an absolute nightmare.
