  1. The Signature Sisters will be spending Memorial Day in Juneau. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200 and Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Here's a forecast that you don't hear for Juneau very often -- "mostly sunny". The high will be 71F/22C (!) and the low 51F/10C. Sunrise is at 4:10 am and sunset at 9:39 pm. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  2. How late could we disembark in Vancouver. We need to arrange transportation.
  3. Can't find the answer to this anywhere: what type of key can I expect to find for this ship? It is it the flat hotel type (in which case all of my clothes will need pockets or a lanyard) or is it a wrist band of some sort, in which case I don't. Seems like a silly question, but I want to be able to not think about my key everytime I leave the room, but know it is either in my pocket or around my neck! [And other things besides potentially a lanyard that I would not think to bring? 😊]
  4. Is "HAL" demographics right for me? It has been asked 1000 times. The clear meaning is: "I've heard that “HAL” clients are very old and tend to travel with their parents". Well, it's a really important question if you are going to look for a fiancée on a cruise ship. Is there anything else that may draw your attention? Let’s say, such small things like a beautiful ship, good food, amazing itinerary? How old is the Caribbean Sea? Not too old for you? Maybe you need to look for a newer, more ”technologically advanced” sea? Unfortunately the sea is very old. It’s even older than the sandy beaches on paradise islands. And the Caribbean sun? The sun is terribly old. Now let’s be seriuos and discard that garbage about “HAL” clients. Have you been (like us) tired of the hustle and bustle of your work, lectures, exams, driving, phone calls, company’s reports? Yes? Then be my guest. I will show you how to ‘dam it! So.... Before I share with you my short review of the wonderful 7-nt cruise of love and romance on the #1 luxury cruise ship at sea, let's bear in mind something important about "HAL". First of all, never, never, say "HAL", say what ship. Of course, if you want to confuse someone, or be confused – say “HAL” and ask about “HAL” on cruise forums. Lack of information feeds stereotypes. The sleep of reason produces monsters. One of a few most reputable brands in maritime history (from 1873), Holland America Line is now a cruise line that actually operates four different groups of ships - more different than some cruise lines differ from each other! What is different: size, amenities & comfort, atmosphere, dining options, itineraries, clientele, cruise length, prices, etc. The whole experience is different. Please note that saying"I have cruised on HAL", "I decided to try HAL", “HAL vs whatever cruise line” means nothing really unless you say what ship. Let’s see my photos... 1. Holland America's Top League - Luxury resort cruise ships. Most advanced cruise ships for self-sufficient cruisers of all ages. 5. We are sailing at the end of June and we deliberately did something we have never done - booked an inside room. Ordinarily we book verandas, but at that time of the year it is light almost all night and we wanted a dark room for sleep. This means I will be spending more time outside our cabin reading or just watching the scenery. Where is your favorite spot to sit and quietly read? Is there a library or place to lounge that is relatively quiet. I am usually up early and go read the paper and have coffee until my spouse gets up. Have never been on this ship and it is a short cruise (7 days) and I thought I could ask this experienced crowd so I don't find some great spot on the last day :-).

  7. Delta has changed our flights not enough time to get thru passport control and then to the domestic terminal. We would need to spend one night in Amsterdam and catch our flight to Nice the next day. Please reply with names of hotel new the airport you would recommend. Thank you
  8. I know that ship doesn't have as many dining options as some of the newer ships. What are our options for embarkation lunch, and what would be your choice? Any special "not to be missed" menu items we should watch for? Thanks in advance!
  9. I've searched but failed to come with an answer for this. Does anybody know what hours the spa is open? I'm considering getting a spa pass, but it depends a lot on the hours. I tend to be an early riser, and getting in the T-pool first thing in the morning might be my biggest use of the spa. And watching an Alaska sunset while on a thermal lounger sounds lovely too. FWIW, I'll be on the Nieuw Amsterdam.
  10. I will be flying to Fort Lauderdale Good Friday to board the Nieuw Statendam on Easter Sunday. Two weeks later the Nieuw Statendam will have her first visit to her home country and I will be on board. Sadly, that will be a bittersweet moment for me as I will both enjoy the moment but also the sadness of disembarking. Come along with me on this journey. It will be typical of my cruise reports and I’ll have menus and When and Where posted as well as likely additional photos on my companion blog: http://getawaysfrom21044.wordpress.com. While I do fly I don’t like it. Cunard’s next transatlantic is some time after my arrival in Amsterdam so I’ll be extending my time with them for a few days before returning home. I have 2 days in Amsterdam and another 2 in Kiel before boarding Queen Victoria for a short 3-day cruise to Southampton (port:Skagen). Next is a 5-day getaway on QM2 (2nd call to Zebrugge plus St. Peter Port) before my transatlantic starts (May 17-24). When on a multi-line itinerary I tend to report the entire journey on a neutral forum but this time that will be on the Cunard forum as the Nieuw Statendam will be a sister to Cunard’s newest vessel. That thread is: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2655034-qvqm2-kiel-to-new-york-with-a-holland-america-prelude/ Luggage Forward already has one of my bags at their Florida office. Roy

  12. Always nice to go on the newest ship in the fleet & this itinerary certainly seems ideal to experience it. We hope our CC friends have a great time in ports and on board and, of course, we wish them safe travels, fair winds & smooth seas. Bon Voyage to Nieuw Statendam - 7 night Viking Sagas: qoap24 Bon Voyage qoap24!!!!! Have a great cruise and a WONDERFUL time!!!!!!
  13. Hello Everyone Any advice on what time may be best to arrive at Canada Place Pier for embarkation on The Nieuw Amsterdam ? First time cruising from Vancouver. Thanks in advance for your responses.
  14. I’m on the verge of leaving on a round trip Transatlantic. The eastbound is on Holland America’s newest ship the Nieuw Statendam leaving Fort Lauderdale and ending May 5 in Amsterdam. It’s more than a direct way home but I board Queen Victoria in Kiel, Germany May 9 for a short 3-day cruise to Southampton (with a stop in Skagen) where I transfer May 12 to QM2. https://www.cunard.com/map/itineraries/V911B/images/en_GB_V911B_desktop_1x.jpg There’s a short 5-day getaway (Zebrugge and St Peter Port) before continuing on to a transatlantic, getting me back to New York May 24. https://www.cunard.com/map/itineraries/M912/images/en_GB_M912_desktop_1x.jpg For a trip like this I would normally do a thread on each forum as well as a thread covering the entire journey somewhere neutral. I can still do that but my understanding is that the Nieuw Statendam will be pretty much a twin of Cunard’s new ship (Queen Anne?) and there may be some interest on the Cunard forum from that angle. If I do post here I’ll try to envision what differences there would be with an implementation based on Cunard’s values. Assuming this is true I’ll start posting here Good Friday; otherwise you can look for me on May 9. Roy
  15. Hello All, I’ve done a keyword search and haven’t found any information on this topic. Is there any way to get the nutritional information about the food served on board? I will be on the Nieuw Statendam for 14 days next month, and I want to be able to track calories, sugars, fats, etc. In the US, the FDA requires restaurants with more than 20 outlets to document their menu items in these ways: Calories from fat Total fat Saturated fat Trans fat Cholesterol Sodium Total carbohydrates Fiber Sugars Protein I’m wondering if similar numbers are available on board HAL’s ships? I know HAL does not have to comply with FDA guidelines—I’m just wondering if maybe they do? Thanks in advance for your responses, Lidja
  16. I really really did search and I found a lot of information about the Internet. Some of it seem to be older and I wasn’t real sure about getting the latest information. So then I emailed my PCC i’m asked him and really got no real answers. I’m hoping y’all can help me again. I leave on Sunday Mexican Riviera new Amsterdam . And even though I was on a HAL cruise just last October I cannot for the life of me remember if I even purchased an Internet package. I remember the ones I get on Carnival because they offer social packages, full blown, Internet unlimited etc. So my questions to my PCC was 1. Does HAL offer the same type of packages the carnival? 2. Did he by any chance know what the pricing was. 3. If it’s by minutes how do you determine how many minutes you should buy? This question is really just for you folks 😂 For those wondering here is his response: HAL does offer internet packages – this will be specific to the internet manager on board, as it’s a 3rdparty company that runs the internet. When you get onboard, they will have a desk with sheets listing the packages you can purchase. Again, if you can wait to get into ports of call, you can simply find a coffee shop and use free wifi to message and save the money. Any help/Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
  17. Does anyone have a copy of the Main Dining Room map for the Nieuw Statendam? It should be the same as the Koningsdam's, but table numbers may have changed a bit.
  18. That is also what we do through our travel agent at final payment time and get a confirmation of our assigned table. The Nieuw Statendam MDR map is not on halfacts yet, that is the reason I asked here.
  19. CurlerRob, I thank you profoundly for your excellent reporting and analysis, especially since you are a tech professional (which I am not). Holland America charges premium fares for their World Cruise on their flagship, the Amsterdam, so the abysmal internet service they gave you on it is particularly disturbing. That, plus the fact that it immediately improved when their CEO got onboard, says to me that we have here not only a technological deficit, but a deficit of ethics and good will, as well. A culture of lies to both their customers and their executives. It is understandable that technology upgrades require both time and capital expense (though HAL is running about three years behind their competition regarding internet). What is never acceptable is deliberately lying to your customers and prospective customers, promising and charging for service which you know you either cannot or will not give them. I am a lifelong business owner, entrepreneur and investor. I understand the necessity of profit and cash flow and shareholder returns. But I also know right from wrong and good from evil, the most important things of all. The HAL internet policy is both wicked and stupid (from the standpoint of alienating customers). This is how you kill a venerable old cruise line with proud traditions. I have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars with HAL, but they don't blink an eye at running me off. None of their executives have ever returned my calls, letters, or emails. This is not how I run my businesses. You asked which cruise lines I have been using with better internet. Mostly Celebrity. I've now been on most of their ships in many parts of the globe, including both Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Pacific cruises. Since they switched their whole line to a new provider with totally new generation of low-level satellites and radically-improved technology, their internet service level has worked well for me, with occasional brief exceptions (mostly severe storms). I still miss Holland America's great itineraries, classic art and decor, the glorious flowers, and above all, the smiles and friendliness of the crews. But at least I can do my work and thus pay for the cruises. I have done just a few cruises in recent years with Royal Caribbean (whose internet is like Celebrity's), P&O (UK, owned by Carnival Corporation), and MSC. All have significantly better internet than I ever got on HAL (and often cheaper to boot). Cunard has gorgeous ships, but their internet is still in the Dark Ages. From what I have read, it would seem that these lines have also switched to the new-generation marine internet: Viking Ocean, Regent, Oceania, and Windstar. I haven't tried them yet. HAL's parent company, Carnival Corporation, has reputedly introduced greatly-upgraded service (called "Medallion") on a few of their ships in recent months: Regal Princess, Caribbean Princess, Carnival Horizon. I don't know how this compare to HAL's "new" service, but hopefully it is a step in the right direction which will eventually make it to HAL and their other lines. We shall see. I note that one of our responders above testifies to excellent internet on the Royal Princess. I understand that some of the new satellites are able to serve ships in very remote or difficult locations by beaming their signal directly to a particular ship and the beam following that ship. Also, they use more satellites in more places, at lower elevations. Of course, the ships need to have plenty of strong routers properly placed throughout the ship. But regardless of the technology, this is all predicated on a true commitment of a cruise line to providing really fast and reliable service at fair prices, and being honest about their limitations. This appears to be missing from Holland America still, but let's be grateful for the improvements on some of their ships. I remember the day when having internet at all on a cruise ship seemed miraculous, and it was very legitimate for cruise lines to say that sporadic and slow service should be expected at sea. However, with the current state of marine internet technology, cruise lines which continually make that excuse today are uncompetitive and/or dishonest. As they say in Texas, "That ole dog won't hunt no more." I grieve to hear that my beloved Holland America Line is among them. Thanks to everyone who has reported their experiences, whether positive or negative. Please keep them coming, so I can compile a list of HAL ships which have good enough internet for me to try again.
  20. I am on Nieuw Amsterdam 7 day Inside Passage cruise and it seems prices may be dropping. Are we just out of luck if we are already confirmed? We are in an assigned cabin (vs guarantee); can we rebook at lower rate?
  21. Could someone please explain the difference between a V and a VD cabin. Many thanks
  22. Could be that I was just lucky after a free upgrade to a Neptune Suite on my 4-day Pacific Coastal last month. On Embarkation Day, a Specialty Restaurant rep was in the Neptune Lounge when I tried to make a reservation for the PG on a night where the ship had decided to do a Sel de Mer. The rep said that I could use one of my free PG dinners and just pay the difference, less my 50% 5-Star discount. If I had known of a Sel de Mer night, I would have purchased online. I have already purchased my Sel de Mer for my June 2 cruise so will try to use this new knowledge on the Nieuw Statendam in December. Hopefully, someone else will get the Sel de Mer discount with their free dinner before then to confirm. I will ask the PG Manager on the Westerdam if this is possible.
  23. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING - Updated May 24th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 24. RCI have started very early with port bookings for the summer 2020 European season. Port bookings at Gibraltar confirm that Anthem of the Seas will be based out of Southampton for the summer season in 2020 along with Indy. Jewel appears on May 5th and it is unclear if this is maybe a post dry dock re-entry to the MED or if the ship is heading out from the MED to another home port for summer of 2020. As Brilliance is booked at both Grand Cayman in 2021 and has a September 2020 at Gibraltar it looks like she will stay on the same pattern with Amsterdam and then later a Barcelona mini-season. Even with this early start it would seem that they are still booking Celebrity and some remaining Azamara before they really get serious with Royal port bookings.
  25. TAD.....how do you find the name and contact info for the "ship's coordinator?" We have always sent an email to HAL with mediocre response. We are celebrating our 45th anniversary next month on Amsterdam and there are particular tables we would like. Would appreciate any information that you can share.
