  1. Just wondering if anyone has stayed in this cabin or one like it. It has the angled balcony which looks like it might be slightly larger than some and the cabin looks a little bit longer. Trying to decide between this and one in the same V category with the obviously larger balcony. Not sure if there's much difference in cabin size, and if not, would rather have the larger balcony on the other one. Thanks!
  2. Arriving in Amsterdam from ATL 5:55 AM, Viking transfer included to ship. Any ideas what to do besides resting in the ship lounge and having lunch? Not even sure what time we'll be able to board. Cabin to be ready by 3 PM

  4. Day #1 - After a leisurely breakfast on the 23rd floor of the Pan Pacific, we rolled our luggage downstairs to the co-located Canada Place cruise ship terminal (the hotel has a dedicated "cruise ship level" elevator.) It was an easy hop, skip and a roll to the porters. From there, it was the actual cruise ship check-in which, with four ships in port, was a busy affair. After check-in, it was a bit of a "zig-zag livestock style" meander to get to shore-side security screening of individuals and carry-on luggage, and then another "hurry up and wait" for pre-clearance border screening, not by Canadian CBSA, but by officers of the United States Customs & Border Protection (CBP). You see, the United States federal government operates border pre-clearance facilities at a number of ports and airports in foreign territory. The process is intended to streamline border procedures, reduce congestion at U.S. ports of entry, and facilitate travel between the pre-clearance location and U.S. ports of entry unequipped to handle international travelers. After the obligatory welcome aboard pic by the ship's photographers (hey, no one is holding a knife to your throat to later purchase these pics!), we took one of Nieuw A's scenic elevators to Deck 7 and to our floating crib. Dropped off the carry-on's and headed for the Lido Marker for a salad and soup lunch. As we were leaving the abode, our luggage was delivered pronto; fast service by Nieuw A's Housekeeping Dept.! The 4:00 PM mandatory passenger emergency safety drill was one of the fastest and most efficient "mustard" drills that we've seen in twenty-seven years of cruising. Everyone showed up, got scanned in by the asst. boat commander and, at least as was the case with our boat, #10, paid attention/quit flapping their lips" as Captain Marco Carsjens and CD Rebecca read their safety and health schpiel via the ship's P/A system. We were dismissed exactly nineteen minutes after arriving, a fact which drew an applause from many of our fellow shipmates! Impressive feat! After unpacking, we did some jelling and vegging until it was time for dinner (we chose a casual one in the Lido and had Rigatoni). From there, it was a beeline for the last portion of the first set (8:30 PM) of the B.B. King's All-Star Band which, we found out, was standing room only, not one available seat in in the house! The band sounded spectacular as usual, with lead female singer Stephanie Bolton standing out. We stuck around for the entire second set (were able to locate two front row seats) and then finished up the night with the two Billboard Onboard pianists/vocalists Ivy and Jonathan. The main entertainment in the show lounge tonite was the movie "Avengers Endgame"starting at 8:30 PM Pic is the reason behind this ship's name prominently displayed opposite the Deck 2 port-side scenic elevators. New York City's nick name "The Big Apple" was first popularized in the 1920s by John J. FitzGerald, a sports writer for the New York Morning Telegraph.
  5. Just a heads up for any of those looking to book with Fosshestar in Isafjordur. He does not refund your deposit if the ship is unable to make the port of call. He makes the decision himself if the conditions are "safe to ride". Our ship, Nieuw Statendam on August 12, was due to call on the port. The weather forecast was very poor, calling for cold, rain, and heavy winds. We left Reykjavik on the afternoon of the 11th, and the captain informed us that due to high winds and rain on the seas and in the forecast, and unsafe tender conditions, that we were cancelling the port visit on August 12 at Isafjordur and going straight to Akureyri a day early. We also received a letter stating the same issue. We were able to go a day early due to another ship canceling Akureyri on the 12th. We were also warned to take items on high shelves, and to plan for rough seas of 18-20' for a period of 5-7 hours on August 12, which we did indeed have. I emailed Arni at Fosshestar as soon as we were told the news and informed him we would not be coming in due to the ship canceling the port of call. He let me know that he would be unable to refund me our deposit, as he only does so "if we feel that the weather does not allow for a safe tour" and argued that the captain shouldn't have canceled the port of call. Something tells me I would trust our captain over this guy and the seas we had that day would support the captain's decision. Truly, I have never had a company keep a deposit on a canceled port. This is a shame on me I guess for assuming, but I didn't think he would actually keep a deposit if a ship canceled due to unsafe conditions. He may give great horse ride tours, and we were disappointed not to make it there, but after working with this guy, I personally would not book with them again due to their policy. Others may be fine with this risk, but I just wanted to make sure people were aware of their policy ahead of time before booking with them.
  6. Just back from a Cruise through the Fjords of Norway on board the Nieuw Statendam. A few thoughts: Embarkation: A rather long wait- but that might be because we picked a peek time – all in all well handled from HAL Ship: The Nieuw Statendam is just no our ship- to dark – to loud in some places. No deckchairs on the promenade deck- not even in some places. The wrap around pormmenade deck is nice - but the view blockes from the lifeboats. The most irritating part is the Lido – Buffet- Restaurant. The chairs and tables are by the windows- the style of said chairs and tables – well that’s a kind of “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"- for us it was the 70´s gone very wrong! The most disturbing fact of the Lido- Restaurant is that the waiting area in front of the stations doubles as walkway to the aft poo ldeck- so there was always “ traffic”- lot´s of people bumped into each other- the ones carrying their food to the tables and others walking through. The Dutch Café and Explorations – Crow´s Nest are both wonderful and nice places- nicely furnished too- both are self service- which is - in my book anyway- a deal- breaker. Especially in the Dutch Café- which is a very nice place - but way to small- waiter service would be much better- I witnessed some passengers struggling carrying their coffee- tea or whatever to their tables- some spilling their contents, some smashing vase´s in placing the stuff on the table. If you are so lucky to get a table, you had to put some stuff at the table- to mark it – “ in use”- ( so we turned into table- and chair hogs…) otherwise you get your stuff at the counter and are at loss where to put it- if there is no table or seat – happened to us twice- and we ended up at the bar- not a problem- but not very comfortable and not my idea of a Café! Oh just to mention it we are not yet in our dotting years- early 50s! The food in all Restaurants and especially in Rudi´s and the Pinnancle Grill were outstanding good. The service likewise. No complaints here! We had a verandah cabin on Deck 5- 5051- perfect location - perfect and extra large balcony- wonderful- the best bathroom i ever had on boad a ship- with the exception of Queen Mary2´s new single stateroom bathrooms. Would we sail HAL again- well- maybe on boad of one of the older ships- and if they change to table service in the Dutch Cafe and Explorations- for the time beeing it is either Cunard or Celebrity.
  7. RCI have started very early with port bookings for the summer 2020 European season. Port bookings at Gibraltar confirm that Anthem of the Seas will be based out of Southampton for the summer season in 2020 along with Indy. Jewel appears on May 5th and it is unclear if this is maybe a post dry dock re-entry to the MED or if the ship is heading out from the MED to another home port for summer of 2020. As Brilliance is booked at both Grand Cayman in 2021 and has a September 2020 at Gibraltar it looks like she will stay on the same pattern with Amsterdam and then later a Barcelona mini-season. Even with this early start it would seem that they are still booking Celebrity and some remaining Azamara before they really get serious with Royal port bookings.
  8. I went to The August 15th link for Ketchikan. Ruby Princess is at Dock 4 and the Eurodam is docked at Dock 2. Nieuw Amsterdam and Grand Princess are both due in later. My observation earlier should not be seen as lack of appreciation of Rich's posting. On the contrary, I look forward to this report each and every day.

  10. Just recieved an offer from HAL to upgrade to Club Orange for our 14 day cruise. Cost $15 per person, per day. We are on the Amsterdam (which does not have a dedicated Club Orange room) to Alaska. Since we are 4 Star, we already get some of the items (like priority boarding, disembarkation, and tenders), but was wondering what people who have done this on an R class ship felt - was it worth it?
  11. Suntan, we did the Rhine Amsterdam to Basel departed 4/12 returned 4/21 or there about. We saw a few boats and saw tour groups from other lines, two or three times I wouldn’t consider it crowded at all, but that was April and the cruise director told us it was the first trip of the season for this ship and crew ( I think that’s good because they worked their tails off to make everyone happy). Regarding weather, think layers. One day it’s sunny and warm, next day damp and cloudy. I had a windbreaker and sweatshirt which sufficed, but walking around Amsterdam could have used a slightly heavier coat in the evening. Enjoy.
  12. Our recent transatlantic the Nieuw Statendam had the best entertainment of our 6 HAL cruises (too bad I can't say the same about the food and GDR service). Music Walk with B.B. King, Rolling Stone Room and Billboard were filled to standing room for 14 nights. Dance floors were overflowing into the main walking aread. The band's were fabulous playing Cream, Janice Joplin (Big Brother and the Holding Company), Jimi Hendrix and some great R&B classics. i will continue to sail on HAL but only the Pinnacle ships for music walk and specialty restaurants and only for a specific itinerary. I am currently booked on Oceania and looking at Azamara and Viking for the immediate future for the food and service.I HAL lost me with luke warm food, dining service that left one of six at our table without food served until all of us finished and topping it off with missing gluten free pre-order meals. The GDR menu choices appears to be shrinking as well (no more chilled soups??? What's up with that?).
  13. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated August 16th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 14. Hi. We recently did a 7 night Danube cruise on Crystal Mozart and had a great time. We are contemplating to do an another Crystal river cruise, perhaps in 2021. We think we would like to cruise on the Rhine next, probably in the fall (before the Christmas Market prices kick in). We are thinking about the 7 night Amsterdam to Basel, or the reverse. It appears the ports of calls are identical whether it is southbound or northbound. Has any of you done one or both of these cruises on the Rhine? Is there a not-so-obvious pros/cons of the southbound vs. northbound? Our initial thought is that we would prefer northbound because then we can spend a few days in Basel (where we have never been) before the cruise, and am hoping that there are more convenient flights out of Amsterdam (where we have done most of the typical sights before) if we want to fly home at the end of the cruise.
  15. If I understand correctly, we should pre-purchase Rijksmuseum tickets because: --they are good for any day within a year, no specific date or time --they will allow us to bypass at least one line If I read correctly, with tickets in hand, we just enter the building thru the main doors, skipping the long line outside? We are in Amsterdam for 2 days pre-cruise, so right now we can't pinpoint exactly when we will visit the museum, but if the above is correct, pre-purchase looks like a no-brainer. As I understand it, the van Gogh Museum pre-purchase does require picking a date and time--if we end up there we will do so online while in-country. Please, those who have visited already, please enlighten me! Thanks.
  16. We will be in Amsterdam October 21-24 after a river cruise. I am prebooking the Anne Frank House and museums. Is it really necessary to prebook the Ice Bar and Heineken Experience? I would prefer to do these at our leisure rather than having to make a specific time. Any advice is appreciated.
  17. We had a wonderful Northern Isles Cruise on the Nieuw Statendam!!! Pre-cruise - We flew United from Pittsburgh to DC and then DC to Amsterdam. We purchased our airfare through HAL and saved almost 50% to what we found on line. Other than a long layover in DC, which we spent in a United lounge, the flights weren’t bad and we arrived in Amsterdam on Friday morning for a Sunday cruise. We stayed at the Kimpton, which we would highly recommend. It is a short (5 minute) walk from the Centraal station (took the train from the airport) and has nightly free wine happy hours. We walked everywhere from the hotel, with the longest walk being a little over 30 minutes to the Van Gogh Museum. We had a busy few days in Amsterdam- we went on a canal tour (in a drizzling rain) on Amsterdam Boat Adventures - a small canal boat that only holds about 12 people- due to the weather there were only 4 of us on board and it was a great tour. We also visited the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank’s house (with the recommended pre tour presentation). We would highly recommend each. We purchased all of our tickets on line in advance and had no lines. We also had the opportunity to watch some of the pride parade on the canals, which was amazing. It was a very moving experience going from the pride parade to Anne Frank and then back to the pride parade. We had the breakfast plan through the hotel (we booked using points) and also ate at Max Amsterdam- great Rice-table, De Belhamel - loved the fixe price meals for 36-39 euros per person and great canal views, and the Pancake bakery - touristy - but the pancakes were good and portions were huge. Two people can easily share 1 pancake. Transportation to the ship on Sunday was a bit difficult. We were going to walk the 20 minutes to the ship- but the cobblestone sidewalks were not easy with heavy luggage- so we decided to take an Uber. Unfortunately with all the traffic in Amsterdam from the parade and 2 ships in town, the time for the Uber to arrive kept getting delayed - from 5 minutes to 20 minutes to 30 minutes. Luckily a cab showed up at the hotel and we shared it with another couple. He charged us 10 Euros per couple- Not too bad. More to come later.
  18. Still working on our review of our first trip on HAL, but wanted to share a link to pictures of MDR menus and food here. I know food is subjective, but we really enjoyed most of our meals.

  20. Off Viking last month, required to be out of your rooms by 8:30. You are welcome to stay on board but they are not going to hold your luggage for you, let you explore and then come back to the ship to pick it up on disembarkation. Embarkation of course is different, they offer a walking tour. I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable touring on disembarkation in Amsterdam since Schipol is notoriously crowded and delayed. If you do, a private tour operator can hold your luggage or you can look for luggage storage at central station or the cruise terminal.
  21. Just returned... Pre purchasing tickets to the Rijksmuseum allows you to bypass the ticket line. You still wait on a long line to get through security (the long line outside), you will go through security before entering the museum. At a certain point, the line splits between ticket holders and purchasers. Of course, one line is better than two! You are correct in that they offer entry any date/time for a year. Van Gogh is by timed tickets only and we found them sticklers for time. We arrived about 15 minutes early from our time slot and still had to wait. Tickets are sold outside the museum and the lines to buy are huge. Ticket holders check in with a guard and enter directly through the museum. Much faster with timed entry and security (far more so than Rijksmuseum) Van Gogh often sells out day of, particularly in the summer or high season, so I would pre purchase in advance of your trip and tried to guesstimate. We loved Amsterdam. Hopefully you are aware that you must prepurchase tickets if you wish to visit Anne Frank’s House, none are sold on site and they sell out quickly upon release. It’s a must do.
  22. We've been on a 31 day NCL cruise (2016), a 30 day RCCL cruise (spring 2019) and we're gonna be on the same 34 day cruise leaving from Vancouver on the Amsterdam. This will be by far the smallest ship we've been on! We found the food on the NCL cruise to have more variety and less "overlap", compared to the RCCL cruise. Our NCL cruise had *many* ports and very few back to back sea days. Our RCCL cruise had fewer ports and a 4 day and a 5 day stretch of back to back sea days - we survived them, but would have preferred the stretches to be shorter... The Amsterdam cruise has quite a few ports and the sea day stretches are limited to two days! We're *hoping* the food on HAL is good (and hopefully with as much variety as NCL). NCL is known for their entertainment and has never let us down, RCCL was better than we expected. We're not really sure what to expect from the Amsterdam when it comes to entertainment... The Amsterdam looks like it has lots of interesting outside areas to hang around - that should help us on the sea days! Have you found the roll calls for this cruise? I think there are 2 or 3 of them - the main one is the 35 day version, leaving from Seattle.
  23. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Monday is looking to be the nicest day of the week with a 0% chance of rain and a high of 63F/17C but a chilly low of 44F/7C. Sunrise is at 5:28 am and sunset at 8:33 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  24. I love reading all the live trip reports, so I am going to attempt to live blog my upcoming 12 night cruise to the Baltics on the Celebrity Reflection. My last attempt I made it most the way through the cruise but I got bogged down a bit trying to answer everyone's questions then the app crashed on me. I think I am better prepared this time. This intro post it a lot of words, but I do love taking pictures so there will be more pictures and fewer words in future posts. I am 38 year old female and am traveling with my mom who is in her 60s and we both enjoy traveling and photography. This will be my third cruise and second with Celebrity, and mom's fourth cruise and third with Celebrity. She was on the Equinox back in March with my sister - which was my sisters 1st cruise. Both of our 1st Cruises was on the Carnival Liberty in the Southern Caribbean, we both enjoyed the cruising experience but decided that it was not the line for us - it's great there are so many lines since everyone has different priorities and travel preference, there is something for everyone - but I am happier on Celebrity and it fits my personality better. I have been dreaming of this cruise for a few years, there have been multiple spreadsheets comparing itineraries, ships and cost. I actually wanted to go on a Baltic cruise before my 1st Caribbean - I am fair skinned and burn, so most my time on Caribbean cruises is searching for shade. After much debate we decided to go with Celebrity and I originally booked the cruise on Mother's Day 2018 (which is fitting since I am traveling with my mom) on the July 20th sailing, but last August we switched to the August 25th sailing due to a conflict. I will say what I paid for everything - I am not shy about it (and let's be honest, we all have google and could figure it out anyway - I'm just saving you the effort) and that way people know what things cost and to better help budget. Others started to do this in their trip reports and it is greatly appreciated! If I put $ it is USD, otherwise I will try and list the currency. I will do a grand total at the end - this may scare me a bit, but it is what it is and what I have saved up for. I would say I am a moderate traveler, I do enjoy nicer things but I am on a budget so need to prioritize what I spend my money on. The total cost of the cruise booked with Go Best in a standard veranda room ended up being $7,778.92. I wanted internet since we were away for 17 night and we both enjoy the premium drinks, so it just made sense for us and the math worked out. I know quite a few people on here talk about the Celebrity price increases - so out of curiosity I priced the exact same cruise / room location / go best for Aug 2020 - As of May 31 it was $8,923.40 USD and on July 19th is was $9,778.60 which was about when I changed dates. Here is the cruise itinerary: DAY 1, Sun, Aug 25 - Amsterdam Netherlands DAY 2, Mon, Aug 26 - At Sea DAY 3, Tue, Aug 27 - Berlin (Warnemunde) Germany DAY 4, Wed, Aug 28 - At Sea DAY 5, Thu, Aug 29 - Helsinki Finland DAY 6, Fri, Aug 30 - St. Petersburg Russia DAY 7, Sat, Aug 31 - St. Petersburg Russia DAY 8, Sun, Sep 1 - Tallinn Estonia DAY 9, Mon, Sep 2 - Stockholm Sweden DAY 10, Tue, Sep 3 - At Sea DAY 11, Wed, Sep 4 - Copenhagen Denmark DAY 12, Thu, Sep 5 - At Sea DAY 13, Fri, Sep 6 - Amsterdam Netherlands We are leaving tomorrow (Thursday) at 5:55 PM from Chicago on United and arrive in Amsterdam at 9:20 AM on Friday. The cruise departs on Sunday giving us two nights to explore the city. Coming home the ship arrive on Friday and we are departing at 11 AM on Sunday and arrive back in Chicago at 1 PM meaning we also have two nights on the return. The base cost for the flight was $1,686.66, but we did opt to upgrade to Economy Plus and have one extra checked bag for an additional fee and the total ended up being $2,776.66. The bag fee is $400 of the upcharge ($100/bag x 2 people x 2 flights). On that long of a flight we decided that $345 per person was worth it for the extra legroom. For both our two nights on our outbound and return we are at the Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam - City Hall which I got for 450.25 EUR (900.50 total for four nights). I was able to save some on both rooms with a corporate discount code. I would advise booking early, I was checking on May 31st to see what prices were and here is what the second weekend's prices were looking like - per night and pre-tax.
  25. We are thinking about booking a New England/Canada cruise for next summer. HAL has two ships sailing that area. Zaandam or Amsterdam? Are they basically the same ship? They seem to be in the same class. Thoughts or comments? Also, is there any chance that HAL will implement any of their new music partnerships such as Billboard Onboard, BB Kings or Lincoln Center Stage on either of these ships? I know they are small and have limited space, but maybe they convert some of their existing space. Thanks
