  1. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING - Updated May 19th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 2. Just looking for opinions from you all (southern a little) on whether or not you feel crowded on these ships. My DH and I have been on the Zaandam twice and the Nieuw Amsterdam once but that was only for 3 nights. Thanks
  3. We will be sailing on the Nieuw Amsterdam at the end of the week. We know there are a bunch of movies that you can watch on the TV in your stateroom, but we like to go to the little movie theater to watch the movies. Anyone recently home (or on the sailing now) that can tell me what movies they are currently showing? Thanks!!
  4. When I first started planning our cruise departing out of Amsterdam, I had planned on booking either a private driver or the shuttle from the airport to our hotel. But for some reason I got the idea to just grab a cab while at the airport. Am I nuts? There will be 3 of us with about 2 pieces of luggage each.

  6. Hello fellow cruisers! We recently returned from a 7-night voyage on the Nieuw Statendam, and I thought I would try and write a little photo review to share with you! Just testing this photo...More to come!
  7. We are due to board on Saturday for Indy's first cruise out of Southampton this year. We're doing a 7 night Northern Europe itinerary. SAT 18 MAY SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND D 16:30 SUN 19 MAY CRUISING C MON 20 MAY HAMBURG, GERMANY D 07:00 17:00 TUE 21 MAY CRUISING C WED 22 MAY OSLO, NORWAY D 07:00 17:00 THU 23 MAY CRUISING C FRI 24 MAY BRUGES,(ZEEBRUGGE),BELGIUM D 07:00 16:00 SAT 25 MAY SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND D 05:30 We did a fairly similar cruise last year on MSC but we swapped Oslo for an overnight in Amsterdam. This will be our first time to Oslo. We are Julie, 53 and my DH Mark, 54. We usually cruise a couple of times a year, Royal are probably our favourite cruise line but we do others too. I know when the ships leave the US there is a lot less info on here so hopefully this will help those cruising out of Southampton this summer. Feel free to ask questions. We haven't bought VOOM but with our 4 free 24hour D+ internet and free roaming in all the ports we should be covered for much of the week. I'm not one to take lots of photos so there won't be loads but I might pinch a few of Mark's along the way as I know many people like the pics. I've been checking the weather forecast daily and it seems to change but generally I think it will be around 18-20 deg c in ports with a mix of sunshine and showers, typical British weather! I don't think chair hogs at the pool will be a problem this trip☺️ We live about a 3 and a half to 4 hour drive from Southampton and have to work on Friday so it will be an early start for us on Saturday morning. We plan to leave home around 6 am. Hopefully the next 2 days won't drag too much.
  8. I’m on the verge of leaving on a round trip Transatlantic. The eastbound is on Holland America’s newest ship the Nieuw Statendam leaving Fort Lauderdale and ending May 5 in Amsterdam. It’s more than a direct way home but I board Queen Victoria in Kiel, Germany May 9 for a short 3-day cruise to Southampton (with a stop in Skagen) where I transfer May 12 to QM2. https://www.cunard.com/map/itineraries/V911B/images/en_GB_V911B_desktop_1x.jpg There’s a short 5-day getaway (Zebrugge and St Peter Port) before continuing on to a transatlantic, getting me back to New York May 24. https://www.cunard.com/map/itineraries/M912/images/en_GB_M912_desktop_1x.jpg For a trip like this I would normally do a thread on each forum as well as a thread covering the entire journey somewhere neutral. I can still do that but my understanding is that the Nieuw Statendam will be pretty much a twin of Cunard’s new ship (Queen Anne?) and there may be some interest on the Cunard forum from that angle. If I do post here I’ll try to envision what differences there would be with an implementation based on Cunard’s values. Assuming this is true I’ll start posting here Good Friday; otherwise you can look for me on May 9. Roy
  9. We are a group of nine that will be sailing aboard Nieuw Amsterdam to Alaska in June. DW and I are booked in a Neptune Suite. In the past, we've been able to request a private sail away party in our cabin through the Neptune Lounge concierges. Nothing extravagant, just some light snacks. I'm not sure if this is something that we could request prior to embarkation, or if we could just wait until we meet the concierges after we arrive. I would appreciate any feedback from this group. Thanks, in advance for your replies.
  10. RCI have started very early with port bookings for the summer 2020 European season. Port bookings at Gibraltar confirm that Anthem of the Seas will be based out of Southampton for the summer season in 2020 along with Indy. Jewel appears on May 5th and it is unclear if this is maybe a post dry dock re-entry to the MED or if the ship is heading out from the MED to another home port for summer of 2020. As Brilliance is booked at both Grand Cayman in 2021 and has a September 2020 at Gibraltar it looks like she will stay on the same pattern with Amsterdam and then later a Barcelona mini-season. Even with this early start it would seem that they are still booking Celebrity and some remaining Azamara before they really get serious with Royal port bookings.
  11. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Although clouds are predicted and there is a 20% chance of rain the high temperature is going to be a whopping 69F/21C. Low will be 48F/9C. Sunrise is at 4:22 am and sunset at 9:26 pm. 12. And for anyone who wants to use the self service laundry on Amsterdam or Maasdam you can get quarters in exchange for paper money at the front desk. m--
  13. Report # 1 Ready – set – go January 15, 2019 Tuesday Rainy and 55 degrees Usually by now, we would be sailing southwest towards French Polynesia or the Hawaiian Islands as we begin the circumnavigation of the globe. However, we are starting three weeks later, on January 22nd instead. You may ask why? Well, we assume by popular request, the final segment will be northern Europe, not an area normally visited on a grand voyage. At least, not for the Holland America Line in recent years. The Amsterdam will be heading that way towards the third week of April, which should present us with cool temperatures, but on the way towards springtime. So where else are we going? After boarding in Ft. Lauderdale, we will have stops in Santa Marta, Colombia and the San Blas Islands, Panama. The ship will transit the Panama Canal, with an overnight visit in Fuerte Amador (Panama City), Panama. Salaverry, Peru is the next stop, followed by two full days in Callao (Lima), Peru. Arica, Chile, will be the final port before we head west for another Chilean visit….Easter Island, a most unique place in the Pacific. On the way towards French Polynesia, we will drop anchor at Pitcairn Island, which is loaded with history. Hopefully, the natives will be able to bring their treasures onboard to sell. The most beautiful ports in Polynesia will be Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora, where we cross the International Date Line, thus losing one full day of the calendar. No worries, however, since Captain Mercer always promises to give back all of those missing hours one at a time before returning to Florida. There is only one stop in Tonga….no Fiji or Papua New Guinea this year. Heading south, we will visit Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, and Picton….all in New Zealand. Then going west, the next ports will be two days in Sydney, Townsville, Cairns, and Darwin….all in Australia. Then things get exotic such as stops in Komodo, Bali, and Semarang in Indonesia. Mid-March finds us in Singapore for two days, but no Hong Kong this time. Again, some favorite places have to be skipped to make time for northern Europe. Sri Lanka and two ports in India follow….namely Cochin and Mumbai. Then it is off for two days in Aqaba, Jordan with a transit through the Suez Canal. This will find the ship in the Mediterranean, but with only a few ports. We will head directly for Italy with a visit to Naples, followed by Barcelona and Cadiz, Spain. This is where the cruise turns north going to Lisbon, Portugal. One more visit to Leixoes in Portugal, and we sail to Cherbourg, France. A stop in Zeebrugge, Belgium, will give all a chance to see Brussels. One port in the Netherlands will be Amsterdam, then it is off to Copenhagen, Denmark. Cruising Oslofjord, we will stop in Oslo, Norway. Then off to Flam, viewing the Sognefjord in Norway. Portree Scotland will be a first for us, as will be Belfast, Ireland. We have been to Dublin and Cobh, Ireland, but it has been many years ago. The final European port will be Bantry in Ireland. Transatlantic sailing will bring us to Ft. Lauderdale, and going home for most. The two of us will be sailing onward towards Seattle, with stops in Colombia, the Panama Canal again, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, San Francisco, Victoria and Vancouver, Canada, and finally Seattle, where we fly home to SF on June 3rd. Great way to spend the first half of the year, right? In the meantime, much of the in-and-around the house chores have kept us busy. A couple of years ago, we had a 40 year old pine tree decide to kick the bucket. Figured it was a good time to have it taken down before it crashed the house and blocked the driveway. Splitting and stacking the future firewood was accomplished by the more industrious one of us. The other one of us has been occupied whipping up some new clothes for the trip, making good use of the fabric shopping abroad. Still trying to figure out what to do with the waxed fabric from Africa….. Our four duffels have made their way to Florida. Normally we track them from day one, only to be frustrated as they sometimes separate and go different ways. As we don’t need any extra worries, this time we waited until they all arrived four days later. Where they went in the interim, it doesn’t matter, since they are where they need to be. Now the last of the concerns has to do with the situation with the airport security check, namely the TSA agents. Due to the recent government partial shutdown, the security teams have been slow or missing in action. There is no control over this, so we simply pray for the best. Going to the airport very early is another option, which we have already planned to do. In addition, this is another reason we spend three nights in Ft. Lauderdale prior to a long cruise. It gives us a little wiggle room for possible delays. Bad weather this time of year comes to mind as well. So the next time you hear from us will be either at the airport, if we get stuck (heaven forbid), or when we check into the hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. Looking forward to an exciting trip! To be continued….. Bill & Mary Ann PS This is where you can find the blog complete with photos when it is available: https://cruisingwithbillandmaryann.blogspot.com
  14. During our stay in Amsterdam we are planning on taking the train from Amsterdam Centaal Station to Zaanse Schans (roundtrip) one day, and to Muiderslot Castle (roundtrip) on another day. We do not have the chip and pin credit cards. If I understand correctly, we can buy a single use RETURN ticket for each fare (by paying a 1Euro fee for the card + the fare) or a refillable card for 7 euros + fares). We are not going to be using it enough to justify buying a refillable card, so we want the single use card, correct? If so, to cut down on waiting in ticket lines for train tickets, can we pre-purchase single round trip tickets for the dates we want (2 trips on different days) at Schipol before we head into town, or should we just deal with line crowding at Centraal Station? Or is there a better place or way to get the tickets? ( After reading many of the benefits of the bundled Tourist cards (e.g. iAmsterdam) that include museums + public transportation, none of them seem to be a good deal for what we are planning to do, so we are planning on going "a la carte." We are only in town for 2 1/2 days and have other transportation planned from AMS.)

  16. Cruising next month on our 5th HAL cruise, 14 days B2B Caribbean. Question for those who have already been on the new ship since christening last month. What is the status of the electrical outlets beside the bed? Are there USB ports bedside for phone/tablet charging? I have a new CPAP that will require a plug in reasonable proximity to the bed. Do I need to bring an extension cord or are there close outlets that will suffice? Any input will be much appreciated. Thanks.
  17. I'm considering using Supershuttle to go from AMS to our downtown hotel. Where do they pick up at Schipol? Thanks!
  18. The Nieuw Amsterdam will be in beautiful Glacier Bay. Thanks for the fleet report.
  19. Really frustrated to receive itinerary change - no longer docking at Amsterdam but at IJmuiden - a 40 minute bus ride away. We’re overnight in Amsterdam but what would have been really handy to pop back to the ship for a quick shower and change before heading into the city for dinner seems like an ordeal. Overnight in Amsterdam was the reason we booked the cruise and now it’s had the shine taken off it. No offer of any goodwill gesture from P&O but they’ve certainly had lots of complaints. Couldn’t tell me why, only that it was for operational reasons. Anyone know what’s happened?
  20. Hi everyone, We will be in Amsterdam from May 28 until May 31 when we board the Brillance of the Seas for our Baltic cruise. Of course, we are now planning our days in Amsterdam. On May 28, my husband and I have the day open as we are meeting friends who will be arriving that night May 28. We plan to go to Negen Straatjes for shopping. On May 29, we have tickets for the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh museum. I would like to take a canal cruise and am looking for suggestions on which boat to take. On May 30, we plan to take a hop on hop off boat to Zaanse Schans, Volendam and check out Red Light District when we return to Amsterdam. Any other suggestions would be appreciated as who knows when we will return to Amsterdam as there are so many places to visit.
  21. Searching for a good hotel, has anyone stayed in a hotel that they really liked? Have been looking but there are so many. Thanks for any help.
  22. Has anyone had any experience with the aft cabins on Main Deck of the Amsterdam, specifically #2713? It looks a bit larger than the other OV staterooms and the location seems very convenient (ie, just out the door and up the stairs to the promenade deck).
  23. Well, here's a trick for your DW. I've posted this before but you may not have seen it. When I'm having dinner in the PG I politely ask if the chef would consider constructing a strawberry pavlova for me. About 50% of the time this is all I need to do. But if they demur, then I pout and tear up and whimper "Well, they always do it for me on Amsterdam and Maasdam (or any couple of ships except the one I'm currently on)". This has worked every time!
  24. Thanks for the prompt replies...we've been able to request the sail away snacks on Niew Amsterdam, Noordam, and Oosterdam while on Alaska itineraries. But these were not hot appetizers, just chips, etc.. Can you contact ship services via email, or is a phone call better?
