  1. The Signature Sisters will be spending Memorial Day in Juneau. Nieuw Amsterdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200 and Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Here's a forecast that you don't hear for Juneau very often -- "mostly sunny". The high will be 71F/22C (!) and the low 51F/10C. Sunrise is at 4:10 am and sunset at 9:39 pm. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  2. Is "HAL" demographics right for me? It has been asked 1000 times. The clear meaning is: "I've heard that “HAL” clients are very old and tend to travel with their parents". Well, it's a really important question if you are going to look for a fiancée on a cruise ship. Is there anything else that may draw your attention? Let’s say, such small things like a beautiful ship, good food, amazing itinerary? How old is the Caribbean Sea? Not too old for you? Maybe you need to look for a newer, more ”technologically advanced” sea? Unfortunately the sea is very old. It’s even older than the sandy beaches on paradise islands. And the Caribbean sun? The sun is terribly old. Now let’s be seriuos and discard that garbage about “HAL” clients. Have you been (like us) tired of the hustle and bustle of your work, lectures, exams, driving, phone calls, company’s reports? Yes? Then be my guest. I will show you how to ‘dam it! So.... Before I share with you my short review of the wonderful 7-nt cruise of love and romance on the #1 luxury cruise ship at sea, let's bear in mind something important about "HAL". First of all, never, never, say "HAL", say what ship. Of course, if you want to confuse someone, or be confused – say “HAL” and ask about “HAL” on cruise forums. Lack of information feeds stereotypes. The sleep of reason produces monsters. One of a few most reputable brands in maritime history (from 1873), Holland America Line is now a cruise line that actually operates four different groups of ships - more different than some cruise lines differ from each other! What is different: size, amenities & comfort, atmosphere, dining options, itineraries, clientele, cruise length, prices, etc. The whole experience is different. Please note that saying"I have cruised on HAL", "I decided to try HAL", “HAL vs whatever cruise line” means nothing really unless you say what ship. Let’s see my photos... 1. Holland America's Top League - Luxury resort cruise ships. Most advanced cruise ships for self-sufficient cruisers of all ages. MS Nieiuw Amsterdam (2010) MS Eurodam (2008) Both ships have tonnage about 87,000 GT and carry about 2,100 passengers. Nieuw Amsterdam Eurodam 2. HAL workhorses AKA Vista-class ships (four close sister ships: mid-size, mid-age) Who is it for: mature clientele get quality product for reasonablemoney. Zuiderdam 2002 Oosterdam 2003 Westerdam 2004 Noordam 2006 All four ships are near 83,000 GT and carry about 1,900 passengers Zuiderdam Oosterdam Westerdam Noordam
  3. I know that ship doesn't have as many dining options as some of the newer ships. What are our options for embarkation lunch, and what would be your choice? Any special "not to be missed" menu items we should watch for? Thanks in advance!
  4. We are sailing at the end of June and we deliberately did something we have never done - booked an inside room. Ordinarily we book verandas, but at that time of the year it is light almost all night and we wanted a dark room for sleep. This means I will be spending more time outside our cabin reading or just watching the scenery. Where is your favorite spot to sit and quietly read? Is there a library or place to lounge that is relatively quiet. I am usually up early and go read the paper and have coffee until my spouse gets up. Have never been on this ship and it is a short cruise (7 days) and I thought I could ask this experienced crowd so I don't find some great spot on the last day :-).
  5. I will be flying to Fort Lauderdale Good Friday to board the Nieuw Statendam on Easter Sunday. Two weeks later the Nieuw Statendam will have her first visit to her home country and I will be on board. Sadly, that will be a bittersweet moment for me as I will both enjoy the moment but also the sadness of disembarking. Come along with me on this journey. It will be typical of my cruise reports and I’ll have menus and When and Where posted as well as likely additional photos on my companion blog: http://getawaysfrom21044.wordpress.com. While I do fly I don’t like it. Cunard’s next transatlantic is some time after my arrival in Amsterdam so I’ll be extending my time with them for a few days before returning home. I have 2 days in Amsterdam and another 2 in Kiel before boarding Queen Victoria for a short 3-day cruise to Southampton (port:Skagen). Next is a 5-day getaway on QM2 (2nd call to Zebrugge plus St. Peter Port) before my transatlantic starts (May 17-24). When on a multi-line itinerary I tend to report the entire journey on a neutral forum but this time that will be on the Cunard forum as the Nieuw Statendam will be a sister to Cunard’s newest vessel. That thread is: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2655034-qvqm2-kiel-to-new-york-with-a-holland-america-prelude/ Luggage Forward already has one of my bags at their Florida office. Roy

  7. I am on Nieuw Amsterdam 7 day Inside Passage cruise and it seems prices may be dropping. Are we just out of luck if we are already confirmed? We are in an assigned cabin (vs guarantee); can we rebook at lower rate?
  8. My Sel de Mer experience was on the Nieuw Statendam in the full restaurant. Excellent service--as good as table service as my Stewards in the MDR and better Wine Steward service than the MDR. A quieter atmosphere with the restaurant's Manager carefully overseeing my dinner and checking with me as to my satisfaction. (That never happened in the MDR.) I ordered Escargots (different and better than the MDR's), Dover Sole, and Crepes Suzette: all delicious and well prepared. Even the Haricot Verts were well prepared and tasty; I am not a fan of green beans. Have not tried a Pop-Up version of the Restaurant yet, but expect to do so when I sail on Westerdam this July.
  9. I’m on the verge of leaving on a round trip Transatlantic. The eastbound is on Holland America’s newest ship the Nieuw Statendam leaving Fort Lauderdale and ending May 5 in Amsterdam. It’s more than a direct way home but I board Queen Victoria in Kiel, Germany May 9 for a short 3-day cruise to Southampton (with a stop in Skagen) where I transfer May 12 to QM2. https://www.cunard.com/map/itineraries/V911B/images/en_GB_V911B_desktop_1x.jpg There’s a short 5-day getaway (Zebrugge and St Peter Port) before continuing on to a transatlantic, getting me back to New York May 24. https://www.cunard.com/map/itineraries/M912/images/en_GB_M912_desktop_1x.jpg For a trip like this I would normally do a thread on each forum as well as a thread covering the entire journey somewhere neutral. I can still do that but my understanding is that the Nieuw Statendam will be pretty much a twin of Cunard’s new ship (Queen Anne?) and there may be some interest on the Cunard forum from that angle. If I do post here I’ll try to envision what differences there would be with an implementation based on Cunard’s values. Assuming this is true I’ll start posting here Good Friday; otherwise you can look for me on May 9. Roy
  10. Hello All, I’ve done a keyword search and haven’t found any information on this topic. Is there any way to get the nutritional information about the food served on board? I will be on the Nieuw Statendam for 14 days next month, and I want to be able to track calories, sugars, fats, etc. In the US, the FDA requires restaurants with more than 20 outlets to document their menu items in these ways: Calories from fat Total fat Saturated fat Trans fat Cholesterol Sodium Total carbohydrates Fiber Sugars Protein I’m wondering if similar numbers are available on board HAL’s ships? I know HAL does not have to comply with FDA guidelines—I’m just wondering if maybe they do? Thanks in advance for your responses, Lidja
  11. Always nice to go on the newest ship in the fleet & this itinerary certainly seems ideal to experience it. We hope our CC friends have a great time in ports and on board and, of course, we wish them safe travels, fair winds & smooth seas. Bon Voyage to Nieuw Statendam - 7 night Viking Sagas: qoap24 Bon Voyage qoap24!!!!! Have a great cruise and a WONDERFUL time!!!!!!
  12. Some helpful comments in the P&O forum are leading me to consider Fred Olsen as an alternative to P&O. Must admit that P&O's attitude towards their customers (the Amsterdam Ijmuiden con trick for example) have led to that, and frankly it's all got a bit too Skegness/Blackpool/Butlins lately. Anyone use both? How do the ships and onboard services/facilities compare?
  13. I would follow through with the question to Amsterdam passengers. I had the unlimited package a few years back (2015) on Westerdam to Alaska out of Seattle. I never had a problem with it. I was able to get on when I wanted and it never seemed excessively slow. Last summer on the Rotterdam I had the unlimited internet again. I was able to use it everywhere along the route with no issues. Both times I had the middle or Surf plan. On the Koningsdam I had a limited plan (250 minutes) for a Norwegian cruise. Although there were disclaimers about reception in the fjords, I never had an issue with it.

  15. Anyone know? I don't remember ever being interested, but now I am... (I'll be on Amsterdam in August, in case that makes a difference) Trying to plan my lunch reservations. I love eating lunch in the Pinnacle, but more on the Vistas than on the smaller ships. Since on Amsterdam the Pinnacle has no windows, I'm not going to do it on "sea days" such as when we are at the glacier, etc. - but probably will on sea days where there isn't much to see... except... sea... So thought I'd add embarkation day lunch, if that's even possible?
  16. Hmmm. Was afraid that might be the case.... Well, I do adore Amsterdam, so will try to focus on her positives and figure out a way to be a little more internet-free than I usually am! As said I'm going to post in a few weeks to see if we can get some first hand reports on Amsterdam's wifi in Alaska. Thanks!
  17. The Nieuw Amsterdam no longer has a decent library; it had been located in the Crow's Nest, but there are few (if any) books left. If you are looking for a quiet place where you can read without noise, the promenade has loungers. You can see the sea so well from that height, too! Watch the pattern of the waves, and look for ocean creatures. I am fond of sitting on the comfy chairs near the Lido Bar. Somehow the noise of the pool area becomes background din, and is unobtrusive. On a sunny day, especially with the dome open a bit, it can be very pleasant. Close to food & drink, too!
  18. RCI have started very early with port bookings for the summer 2020 European season. Port bookings at Gibraltar confirm that Anthem of the Seas will be based out of Southampton for the summer season in 2020 along with Indy. Jewel appears on May 5th and it is unclear if this is maybe a post dry dock re-entry to the MED or if the ship is heading out from the MED to another home port for summer of 2020. As Brilliance is booked at both Grand Cayman in 2021 and has a September 2020 at Gibraltar it looks like she will stay on the same pattern with Amsterdam and then later a Barcelona mini-season. Even with this early start it would seem that they are still booking Celebrity and some remaining Azamara before they really get serious with Royal port bookings.
  19. Good afternoon everyone, We have just returned from our second ever cruise, which was on P&O Azura and we are now considering trying MSC for a change. We have been looking at a cruise for next year to Bruges, Amsterdam and France Etc. We have obviously not tried MSC before and know very little about this company or the ship, so any hints, tips and reviews would be very gratefully received Especially if you have recently returned from the Preziosa. Thank you.
  20. Nieuw Statendam wine list at Christmas was sparse. The wine steward kept offering us bottles from a higher level package because they were out of the bottles we wanted. And even then, the reds were almost gone. We got the last bottle of Meomi on board. He commented that there were a lot of wine drinkers on that cruise.
  21. Yhank you for the report. The Nieuw Amsterdam is on the inside Passage and the Volendam is sailing the waters of Glacier Bay National Park, the Highlight of an inside Passage Cruise. Not every cruise line is able to get permits to sail into Glacier Bay.
  22. We sailed on Koningsdam in 2016 and hoped that we could do the excursion during the day time and dance after dinner or theater shows. The bands there were not knowledgeable on ballroom music tempo. If you like disco music, or just move your body on the dance floor, BB King Blue band is for you. But not for us. So, we had the most boring cruise in our experience and we swore that we would not go back to Koningsdam. We told our dance friends not to bother with this ship although the food offered in the MDR was not bad. HAL has a new ship, Nieuw Statendam in 2018. I notice that HAL made some changes and anticipate some changes made. I talked to my DH and thought that we may try the new ship since I really like the dance floor on the Queen's Lounge. After I read this CC review on Nieuw Statendam, I don't think we will try the new ship. It seems that HAL didn't change at all. I share his frustration. https://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=653027
  23. We have been on many cruises ( over 30) including 2 river cruises. Considering trying Holland America (Nieuw Statendam) and would appreciate information. Is it non smoking in the casino? ( hope so) What are the dining and show times? Do they supply robes? I'm sure I’ll think of other questions. Thank you
