  1. I have read that it is possible to make table reservations for three days at a time... Can you make a table reservation if you are assigned Open Seating?
  2. We sailed enjoyed the production shows on the Amsterdam in December. Now we are considering the Statendam in Febuary. Would the production shows be the same as the shows we saw on the Amsrerdam?
  3. So confused about HAL cruise offerings. I am between these two sailings on August 3 Nieuw Amersterdam Vancouver Roundtrip and August 4 Westerdam Southbound from Seward to Vancouver. We only have time to do the 7 day cruise, so no land addons. Which itinerary is overall better? Which ship? What sorts of things should I be considering?
  4. THE SUITE (PHOTOS ATTACHED) Our cabin (7080) was a little larger than most Signature Suites since it's located right were the ship juts back out from the center. The extra space extends the cabin quite a bit and might have been better suited for additional square footage on the balcony, but it's also a great spot to store empty luggage. Bed was comfortable and AC/heat both worked well. Hardly heard any hallway noise in the evenings, nor anyone in the cabins next door or above. Cabin was always attended to quickly in the mornings and in the evenings for turn-down service. THE FOOD Pinnacle Grill and Tamarind are amazing, both in quality of food and service. Main dining room and buffet also had great service, but the food was hit or miss (which is to be expected for mass production). Also to be expected: the buffet area can be a madhouse at times and finding a table for larger groups can be a challenge. The main dining room was just the opposite: most table around ours were empty on the two nights we ate there. ENTERTAINMENT Billboard Onboard was great fun, especially the request shows later in the evening. It was great to see everyone sing along and have a great time with the two performers. Only caught the illusionist on the Mainstage and was surprised at how great his show was. Didn't spend time at BB King, America's Test Kitchen, or Lincoln Center Stage, but did walk by during performances and all appeared to have standing-room only (Lincoln Center Stage sounded incredible, so sorry to have missed that performance). GREENHOUSE SPA Like any cruise, spa treatments on board aren't cheap, even when they offer special discounts. What's worse is the up-sell on products after every spa appointment. However, we did make great use of the "discounted" spa pass that allowed daily access into hydro-pool, saunas, and ceramic-heated loungers (for $149 per cabin with two passengers). What else would you like to know? Happy to answer questions if you've got 'em.
  5. Hello, all! We are sailing on the Nieuw Amsterdam in an SS Suite and have two questions about the sofa bed for the 3rd person: 1. Does anyone have any pictures of the sofa bed made into a bed? 2. Does anyone know how long the bed will be or the maximum recommended height of the person sleeping in it? This information would be helpful, as we are considering upgrading to a Neptune Suite, thinking the sofa bed might be a bit longer --- that might not be the case, though. Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks! 🙂
  6. Does anyone know if stateroom has a couch? Thinking about upgrading. Have searched on line and it shows various arrangements of L Large interior staterooms. Does anyone have a picture...that would be great! Thanks so much!
  7. Anyone sailing on the Nieuw Statendam November 17, 2019. My wife and I will be sailing with my Daughter and Son in Law. Would like to connect with any others folks that will be traveling on the Nieuw Statendam
  8. Hi all, DH and I are considering a date in March for this cruise. While HAL trends older, I am a bit worried we will be surrounded by young spring breakers. Does anyone have experience that they can share? We are all in for fun but a bit over 24-7 partying. Many thanks.
  9. I just boarded the Nieuw Statendam today. Observations are based on cabin 1012, a single oceanview cabin. I will start by answering some common questions about the "in cabin" experience. The TV is large, wall mounted at the foot of the bed. It is mounted such that any access to any ports is difficult. It has been suggested that cabin stewards may be able to help you if you want/need to access these ports. I have attached an image showing the 9 "live" tv channels available. There are approximately 144 movies available for viewing. You may select them by seeing categories, or one listing of all movies. The navigation around the TV menu is different than Koningsdam as of last November. Other observations. I have been on Koningsdam twice, leaving last on November 11th last year. So far the Nieuw Statendam seems very familiar. It helps that I have the same cabin I have had on Koningsdam. Muster drill will be happening shortly, and then we will see how similar they are.
  10. Hello, I’m looking into a family cruise to Alaska on the Nieuw Amsterdam. I was hoping someone could provide guidance on food choices at the Lido buffet, as I’d like to see whether it will work for one of my kids. My son has sensory issues and prefers very simple food with few ingredients - for example, if he eats pasta it is plain or with cheese, no sauce or other ingredients mixed in. I’ve looked at kids menus for the main dining room and can see that there are several items that will work for him, but I’m sure that on some nights we won’t feel like sitting through a formal dinner. Are there any basic picky eater-friendly menu items that are consistently served at the buffet? For example, if there is a made to order pasta or sandwich station, that would work. Thank you in advance!
  11. Where is the sauna located? Is there a fee? Are there separate saunas for men and women?
  12. Hi - Does anyone know if the Verandah cabins on the Nieuw Amsterdam (Rotterdam Deck) have an accessible HDMI port on the TVs? I assume there is one on the back - but is there one along the side that we'll be able to use? Thanks! :)
  13. Which is the better one for a Caribbean cruise?
  14. We are going on a mexican cruise druring spring break, I see lots of posts about other ships. We were on the Veendam last Easter. What kind of differences will we experience? We have 2 teens coming too.
  15. Starting a roll call for Mexico cruise from San Diego.
  16. Same itinerary, same price. Which one would you pick? One thing I know is Nieuw Amsterdam has a nice big promenade, right?
  17. Instead of stuff this year for Christmas, we gave the kids a cruise March23-31. This will be our second HAL cruise. We booked a lido deck cabana, we figured the teens would rather be near the pool then up in the retreat, I have book the laundry package ( to save clothes everywhere) we have the SBP and we ordered the quench package for the teens. Prepaid the gratuities booked dinner at each specialty restaurant. The ports we are going to are ones we go to when we go and stay in Mexico, so the kids are not into excursions there, they rather explore the city a bit then have the ship to themselves. So have I missed anything?
  18. Can anyone tell me if the Nieuw Statendam casino has a Let It Ride Poker gaming table?
  19. I realize that the self-serve laundry has been removed on most ships but am wondering if HAL has taken them out on the Amsterdam? Their deck plans still show the "laundrettes" but I'm pretty sure that doesn't mean you can depend on that information... 😉 Thanks in advance for your response!
  20. It will be another busy day in Port Everglades. And we have 2 of our newer blue hulled beauties set to sail for this one. Nieuw Amsterdam is scheduled to leave from pier 19 and leave at 5:00 PM. She is doing the 10 day Southern Caribbean. She is also scheduled to do a 13 day cruise which doesn’t show on itineraries, basically returning back to HMC. Here are her itineraries: Fort Lauderdale, Florida (20 Jan d1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (21 Jan 0800-1500); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (22 Jan 1100-1800); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (23 Jan 0800-1800); Kralendijk, Bonaire (25 Jan 0800-1800); Willemstad, Curacao (26 Jan 0700-2300); Oranjestad, Aruba (27 Jan 0700-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (30 Jan a0700) Nieuw Statendam is scheduled to leave be at pier 26 and leave at 4:00 PM. She is doing a 7 day Soul Train Charter. No map for this one, but here is her itinerary: Fort Lauderdale, Florida (20 Jan d1600); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (22 Jan 1000-1800); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (26 Jan 0800-1600); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (27 Jan a0700 Also in port is: the the Celebrity Edge at pier 25, Celebrity Silhouette at pier 29, Harmony of the Seas at pier 18 and Royal Princess at pier 02 The websites to see the sail a ways are located at https://www.porteverlades.com and https://www.ftlauderdale.com For those that like to check out San Diego, the Eurodam is leaving from there for her Mexican Rivera cruise. Here is the link - http://www.sandiegolive.com And, for the Addicts - the Koningsdam is in Aruba https://www.portarubawebcam.com Next up - January 22nd, the Amsterdam as she and all her lucky passengers set sail on their WORLD cruise.
  21. Saw a post on Facebook HAL fans group from person on NS reporting that there are engine problems and they are skipping HMC and heading back to PE. Only report I've seen- will be interesting to see when she gets into PE
  22. The two newest ships for Holland America are traveling together from St. Thomas to Half Moon Cay. This is Koningsdam as seen off the port side of Nieuw Statendam
  23. As many of you know I recently completed a one week voyage on the NIEUW STATENDAM and I thought you would want a few observations.. I will be brief. I hate to say it but this is the new mid size. That was made clear to me when we were in Cozumel and docked next to The Harmony of the Seas. The Nieuw Statendam looked like a tug boat next to this monster ship. That being said, I still prefer the Signature Class Ships. My friar is they will get bigger and bigger.in the future. One thing I do not like is the promenade walk around deck. It is too narrow . It was good that they moved the Lincoln Center performers to the Queens lounge. However since they now share the space with the BB Kings Blues Venue, the classical music does not go that late. &:30 they are furnished. This ship and the Koningsdam cannot go through the New Locks in the Panama Canal. It has to do with the fact that lifeboats are out way to far. I understand that the next ship they will be relocated closer to the ship and hopefully more like they are on the other classes of ships. Maybe we will even get a decent size Promenade Deck in the next one. I had a nice room on the Navigation Deck (8059) midway between the Forward and Mid ship elevators. The problem was it was right below the Lido pull area and I could heart them dragging tables and chars late at night as I was trying to go to sleep. I liked this ship better that the Koningsdam but I still favor the Vista and Signature Class ships. I miss those Sea View Elevators at the mid ship. I also notice that there are not as many offerings at Dinner as HAL used to offer. For instance, we used to get three soups offered each evening: A broth soup, a cream soup and a cold soup. Not there is one but I think you can still get French Onion. It also seemed that there are fewer options on the minu but you can purchase a President Cut Steak for another &%.00. Baked Alaska is gone from the minuet on the last night of the cruise. The have a Chocolate offering on the last Gala night but with Diabetes, I took a rain check. These are my observations. I will be Chaplain on b2b Cruises on the Nieuw Amsterdam in June. It will be nice to get back on a Signature Ship. If you to the time to read these thoughts and observations, thanks for reading them . They are subjective. They were written in that spirit.
  24. Good morning friends. I arrived in Ft. Lauderdale yesterday around 3:30 PM after a nice flight on United. I have a room on the starboard side mid ship on the Navigation deck. The upgrade ferry tried to get ahold of me but I didn't go on line until late last evening. Oh well, better luck next time. IIt was supposed to rain this morning but so far, so sunny. I can see Port Everglades from my hotel room anr the Oosterdam is visable as is the Caribbean Princess. More later.
  25. We have a spring break cruise in 2020 book for the Nieuw Statendam booked, and as excited as I am, curious to hear about how many kids and any reports from Club HAL - so far, not a lot of family reviews. We originally had a Disney 4 day booked, but at almost 2k less and 3 more days, this was a easy choice, buuut, I'd feel better knowing that our 8 and 13 year old are going to have fun too:)
