  2. We have looked and looked for a GOOD photo of the FAMILY Cabana on the Nieuw Statendam. We have heard all the negatives about this cabana, but have seen no actual photos of it, just side views and partial views where you can make nothing out. If anyone has a good clear photo, we would appreciate it if you would post it here.
  3. I am scheduled to go on the Nieuw Amsterdam ship out of Fort Lauderdale on April 4th to Spain April 17th. We booked it through HAL directly, including the flight back. I'm trying to figure out if this will be canceled or changed in some way. Details are sparse from HAL directly. If Spain becomes a Corona virus target, would the ship go elsewhere, or would they potentially cancel the 13 day cruise entirely? Will HAL help with the flight back as it was booked through them? Definitely still looking forward to the trip, but also don't want to be in Quarantine for a month!

  5. I had noticed that Nieuw Statendam was 'Scheduled' for arrival into Port Everglades for 7.00 am (ET) on Monday 27th April and it is now 'Confirmed'! She will dock at pier 26 with orientation listed as 'Starboard Must' . (that is a bit unusual?). She is scheduled to sail at 5.00pm ET. Also 'Scheduled' for today is Caribbean Princess with an arrival time of 6.00pm and departure on Tuesday 28th April at 5pm Camera links are: https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/ (both Fort Lauderdale web cams are online again) With apologies to those who normally post the sailin/sailaway schedules! Finally - Fijne Koningsdag! Happy King's Day!

Also Zuiderdam will be in Aruba from 1300-2300. https://www.portarubawebcam.com/ Next up: Nieuw Statendam on Sunday, 1 March.
  7. Please note: We have now left North American time zones and in a few days will cross the International Date Line which means the sail-away threads will likely be posted at strange times. 8. My wife and I have sailed several times on the Nieuw Amsterdam and on our last trip from San Francisco to Fort Lauderdale, via the Panama Canal we booked a family cabana for the entire cruise. It was delightful and I would be glad to answer questions on the Cabanas if anyone is interested.
  9. Seven ships in port today with a possibility of 19,000 passengers debarking and an equal number embarking (glad I am not going to be at the FLL airport!). Eurodam will be at pier 19 (starboard to) from 0545-1700. She will be doing an 11-day Panama Canal Sunfarer cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (05 Jan 0800-1500); Oranjestad, Aruba (07 Jan 1300-2300); Willemstad, Curacao (08 Jan 0800-2300); Cartagena, Colombia (10 Jan 0700-1300); Panama Canal (Cruising Canal) (11 Jan 0500-0500); Colon, Panama (11 Jan 1500-2000); Puerto Limon, Costa Rica (12 Jan 0730-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (15 Jan a0700) . We are leaving on the 128-day Grand World Voyage. I would be extremely surprised if we actually left at 1600, however. First of all, the paperwork we received said 1700 and secondly, there has not been a GWV departure before 2000 since I began watching the webcam. In fact, some have not left until closer to midnight. Roseau, Dominica (08 Jan 0800-1700); Castries, St Lucia (09 Jan 0800-1700); Iles Du Salut, French Guiana (11 Jan 1200-1800); Belem, Brazil (13 Jan 0800-1700); Recife, Brazil (16 Jan 0800-1700); Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (19 Jan 0800(+1)1700); Punta Del Este, Uruguay (23 Jan 0800-1600); Buenos Aires, Argentina (24 Jan 0800-1800); Montevideo, Uruguay (25 Jan 0800-1700); Port Stanley, Falkland Islands (28 Jan 0800-1700); Ushuaia, Argentina (05 Feb 0700-1400); Punta Arenas, Chile (06 Feb 0800-2000); Puerto Montt, Chile (09 Feb 0800-1700); San Antonio, Chile (11 Feb 0700-1700); Easter Island, Chile (16 Feb 0800-1800); Pitcairn Island (19 Feb 0800-1200); Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia (22 Feb 0800-1800); Rarotonga, Cook Islands (24 Feb 0800-1700); Nukualofa, Tonga (28 Feb 0800-1700); Auckland, New Zealand (02 Mar 0700(+1)1800); Bay of Islands, New Zealand (04 Mar 0800-1600); Sydney, Australia (07 Mar 0800(+1)1900); Townsville, Australia (11 Mar 0800-1700); Cairns, Australia (12 Mar 0800-1800); Darwin, Australia (16 Mar 0800-1700); Komodo Island, Indonesia (19 Mar 0700-1600); Bali, Indonesia (20 Mar 0800-1800); Surabaya, Indonesia (22 Mar 0700-1600); Semarang, Indonesia (23 Mar 0700-1800); Singapore (25 Mar 0900(+1)1700); Colombo, Sri Lanka (30 Mar 0800-2300); Male, Maldives (01 Apr 0800-1800); Mahe, Seychelles (04 Apr 1200(+1)1700); Mombasa, Kenya (08 Apr 0800(+1)1700); Zanzibar, Tanzania (10 Apr 0800-1700); Mayotte, Comoros (12 Apr 0800-1700); Nosy Be, Madagascar (13 Apr 0800-1600); Maputo, Mozambique (16 Apr 0800-1700); Richard's Bay, South Africa (17 Apr 0800-2300); Durban, South Africa (18 Apr 0800-2300); Cape Town, South Africa (21 Apr 0800(+1)2300); Luderitz, Namibia (24 Apr 0800-1700); Walvis Bay, Namibia (25 Apr 0800-1600); Saint Helena (28 Apr 1000-1800); Ascension Island (30 Apr 1000-1800); Bridgetown, Barbados (07 May 0800-1800); Pointe A Pitre, Guadeloupe (08 May 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (09 May 1000-2300); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (12 May a0700) Also in port are Adventure OTS at pier 29 from 0400-1730, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0330-1600, Celebrity Equinox at pier 25 from 0600-1530, and Sky Princess at pier 2 from 0500-1700. Please note arrival and departure times will likely change between now and then and even the piers could change. If I have the time Saturday night I will put in a revised schedule and bump up the post.

  11. My wife and I have not cruised on any of the HAL ships. We are about ready to book a holiday trip for this year. My question is...all things being equal with the exception of cabin selection, should we do an inside cabin on the Nieuw Statendam or a balcony on the Nieuw Amsterdam? The cost is roughly the same for the inside and balcony. The Nieuw Staendam is a relatively new ship, and the the Nieuw Amsterdam was recently refurbished in 2018. My thinking is since there is limited daylight hours to enjoy the balcony, perhaps the inside cabin on the newer ship is the way to go. But I would appreciate any thoughts and suggestions from folks who have cruised on either or both ships. Thanks so much! Mick

  13. Been off the boards a few weeks, and last I had read, the NA was in shipyard having one of the engines fixed, and a cruise was cancelled. Is she back in the water and ok these days? we have a mid march cruise coming up
  14. I was looking at the deck plans for the Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam, and did not see the Lido Cabanas, Did they do away with them?
  15. Last year, we traveled on the Nieuw Amsterdam and booked in part because we are big Scott Bradlee fans and were excited to see their shipboard show. The agent who made our reservation assured us they would be on the Nieuw Amsterdam. She was wrong, but we had a great time and booked the same ship for this year’s winter getaway. Subsequently we’ve read that SBPMJ will be rotating through HAL ships. Does anyone know if they are on the Nieuw Amsterdam in February? Thanks!
  16. Zuiderdam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0530-1700. She will be doing a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (02 Feb 0800-1600); Falmouth, Jamaica (04 Feb 0800-1700); George Town, Grand Cayman (05 Feb 0800-1600); Cozumel, Mexico (06 Feb 1100-2300); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (08 Feb a0700) Nieuw Amsterdam was supposed to be going on a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise but due to her azipod problems she will be heading to Freeport to fix the issue. 17. Anyone have any info on how the repairs on the Nieuw Amsterdam are going? TIA
  18. We are onboard the Nieuw Amsterdam for today’s sailing. The captain just announced that due to a technical issue we won’t be leaving on time. No ETA on sailing currently. Assuming worst case, what is the Standard Operating Procedure in this case?
  19. My wife and I recently disembarked from the above cruise. In short – and to save you the trouble of reading what follows, we will state that the cruise was absolutely wonderful, and we would have to search for any negative points. The Ship. We had reservations about cruising on a ship as large as Nieuw Statendam, having in the past experienced Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, and Zuiderdam. Quite frankly, those concerns were completely unjustified. We simply loved this ship – its décor, cleanliness, “newness,” the extra venues, and the fact that at no time did it seem crowded. Rather, the public spaces seem wider and brighter, and we felt much less confined than on the smaller ships. It will be difficult for us to sail on anything other than a Pinnacle Class ship in the future. Reservations. We used the services of our HAL PCC, and found that she did a creditable and knowledgeable job as have her predecessors with Holland America. We also made various reservations online, and had no trouble doing so. Finally, we dealt with other agents by telephone in reserving a cabana and purchasing an “upsell,” and both were pleasant and patient. Embarkation/Disembarkation. We experienced no trouble with respect to checking in and leaving the ship at the end of the cruise (sad though that was!). The ease with which we did so was undoubtedly aided by our having opted for a Neptune suite. It is also worth noting that we used the Luggage Direct program and found it to be wonderful as has always been the case in the past. Accommodations. We had initially booked a midship veranda cabin, but wasted no time in accepting an upsell to a Neptune when it was offered via email a week or so before the cruise. We opted for one of the two available – an aft cabin with a wraparound balcony. We had enjoyed this cabin location in the past and loved it. Although the ship’s movement was a bit more apparent at this location, the veranda was wonderful, as was the room itself. Club Orange. We initially purchased Club Orange, because we had not used it in the past and wanted to sample it on a Pinnacle-class ship. Fortunately, the cost of Club Orange was deducted from the additional price charged for the Neptune when we opted for the upgrade. In any event, we enjoyed Club Orange thoroughly, although I am not sure that it is truly worth the price. The staff was wonderful, the food was well prepared and beautifully presented, and I enjoyed watching the chef handling the preparation of breakfast and final touches as to dinner. Still, the main dining room has always worked well for us and we will probably not opt for Club Orange in the future unless it is offered along with some other upsell. Lido, etc. We liked the bright appearance and roominess of the Lido, and found the food to be very good for its kind. We always look forward to Dive-In burgers, and ordered those immediately upon boarding the ship. The pizza was also decent. The Reuben from the deli was good, but would have been much better had it been heated. Oddly enough, the same cold Reuben was my very first lunch on Holland America in 2012 – it was cold then too! Sel de Mer. We skipped Pinnacle and Tamarind in favor of a more expensive blowout at Sel de Mer. We have dined there on three prior occasions. The first trip was wonderful, and the second was frankly pretty poor – so much so that we debated whether to spend the money on this trip. We decided to do so, and I am pleased to report that the ambiance, food, and service were all outstanding. Grand Dutch Café. This was a wonderful addition, although we attempted to avoid it whenever possible because of the calories inherent in the dishes offered! Retreat Cabana and Thermal Suite. We purchased both of these amenities before the cruise. The cabana was beautiful, as was the service and willingness to procure drinks and food. I also enjoyed the thermal suite. However, the fact that the cabana was on deck 12 and the thermal suite on deck 9 meant that I didn’t use it as frequently as I had the lido cabanas and thermal suite on the Eurodamand Nieuw Amsterdam. Frankly, the need to travel up and down 3 flights was just not worth the trouble. Although most would disagree, I will also confess to missing the hustle and bustle of the lido cabana on the pool deck. Signature Beverage Package. We do not consume enough beverages to warrant this purchase, but I nonetheless like it because there is no need to worry about unpleasant surprises at the end of the trip when the bar and wine bill is received. While the wine on the SBP is probably not terribly sophisticated, the bourbon selection was excellent, as were the mixed drinks preferred by my wife. Bars. We exclusively patronized the Ocean Bar for pre- and post-dinner cocktails. This was a wonderfully comfortable area, and we enjoyed joking around with the staff as they managed to keep the throng happy headed to and from dinner. Shops. Frankly, we saw little in the shops of interest, beyond buying a couple of Nieuw Statendam commemorative glasses that were on sale. Neptune Lounge. We have used and enjoyed this area in the past, but on this occasion visited only once or twice because of the distance between our cabin and the lounge. We did receive a couple of calls from the concierges in the lounge, which were appreciated. Itinerary/Excursions. We have sailed this itinerary several times in the past, and took no ship’s excursions. Frankly, we preferred the ambience of the ship to any activities onshore, and thus went ashore only at the Amber Cove and ssSt. Thomas stop. Entertainment. We went to virtually nothing on the Main Stage, with the exception of the “Origins,” which I very much enjoyed. The history of Holland America is not only interesting but also important, and I am glad that an effort has made to offer this as a program. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed the Lincoln Stage performances. Overall, this may have been our most enjoyable cruise ever: the ship itself was magnificent, the accommodations wonderful, the food outstanding, and, most importantly, the staff was truly wonderful. We are looking forward to going again. By way of personal information, I will note that my wife and I are in our “early” 70’s, and consider ourselves to be active and still in possession of most of our faculties. Our first Holland America cruise was in 2012 (this same itinerary), and we have cruised at least once annually ever since. With the exception of a circumnavigation of the Hawaiian Islands on another line, we have never been interested in experiencing any other ships or companies. This loyalty on our part has led us to bring along various family members over the years, on one occasion including 14 children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. We are currently three-star mariners, and emerged from this trip only 5 credits shy of attain four-star status. We look forward to attaining that next goal.
  20. We are looking to take our first cruise on HAL. Can anyone give me some input as to whether an aft facing balcony in the Mediterranean is a good pick?
  21. Another, now infrequent, dam ship appearance in Ft. Lauderdale/Port Everglades during these uncertain times! HAL's still newest ship, Nieuw Statendam will be making her presence known on Sunday, March 29, 2020 in order to take on fuel, water and some stores, as well as a small bit of crew turnover. She is due in at 0700 hrs local and going to berth 19. Prelim departure is scheduled for 5:00 PM Two others members of the Holland America Group are scheduled to make an appearance; Sky Princess arriving at 0600 hrs. local and assigned berth 26, and her stablemate Regal Princess, arriving at 0630 hrs local, and assigned to berth 02. Regal is scheduled to depart at 4:00 PM and Sky, like Nieuw S., at 5:00 PM The webcams can be found at: https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/

  23. Hi, we are traveling on Nieuw Amsterdam in May with a group of 18. We booked with a TA and asked for balcony rooms. We are in 5087 and I’m wondering if it’s an obstructive view. Wish we booked direct as I don’t think TA is looking out for our best interests. TIA
  24. Are there chairs on the outside promenade deck of the Nieuw Amsterdam? Recently was on the Koningsdam and they had none. Used to sail Holland and remember the teak wood lounge chairs under the life boats on the promenade deck.
  25. I have just gained access to the Lloyds Register of Shipping Classification Society records for Nieuw Amsterdam. There is a Note to her Classification status of Imminent Action required related to her inoperative Starboard Azimuth Podded Propulsor. The Imposed Date of this required action was 14 Dec 2019 and the Due Date of this required action is 02 Feb 2020. While there is nothing new here relative to what we have learned over the last 36 days, it appears that Lloyds would not have let this situation go on for very much longer. (The word Imminent is shown below a red triangle with a red exclamation point encased within it.) The cancelation of the Feb 1 voyage appears to correlate directly with the Feb 2 Due Date of this Note to Class. Again, how this is all fully resolved going forward is still to be determined.
