  1. Hello and welcome aboard our cruise on the Nieuw Statendam starting tomorrow. Currently we are leaving cold Ohio and heading toward warm Ft Lauderdale. On on our trip, I’ll be providing information and photos of the ship, hotels and food. If if you have questions, please ask. Thank you you and welcome aboard!
  2. We are looking to book a scooter accessible cabin on NA. Seems there are no fully accessible cabins available, but 5001 shows up as partially accessible. I've tried searching for pictures or descriptions but found nothing. Has anyone been in 5001? Would it be suitable for someone with a scooter? Thanks for any feedback.
  3. Anyone sailing on the Nieuw Statendam November 17, 2019. My wife and I will be sailing with my Daughter and Son in Law. Would like to connect with any others folks that will be traveling on the Nieuw Statendam
  4. Can someone tell me does the NA still have a Library. And does it have Lincoln Center and Tamarind ? OP thinking of taking the cross Atlantic.
  5. We are considering a cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam. We have sailed on the Vista class ships (Westerdam, Zuiderdam) but not on the Signature class. We really liked the aft balcony cabins on Deck 5 (like 5185) because of the extra long balcony with loungers as well as a table, chairs and footstool. We also liked the fact that these balconies are fully covered. Can someone tell me, are the aft balconies on NA similar? Does choosing an aft on deck 5 (like 5193) similar to those on Vista class, and do the balconies get smaller and more exposed as you go up? Also, does anyone know when Explore 4 usually starts? We are looking at cruising in Dec 2019 and can't decide whether to book now (and purchase drink package later) or wait for Explore 4. Thanks! Sharon
  6. We booked this cruise on February 15th and it sailed on the the 24th . Unfortunately , all of the Neptune Suites were sold out but they did have our favorite aft view in a VS verandah # 5200 . This was our 10th aft view verandah and it turned out to be , by far , the smallest . We thought that we would try the Club Orange to receive some of the NS type of perks . After clearing security we went to the express check in where the camera wasn't working . They used our Zaandam photos from December . After dropping our bags we headed to the MDR for lunch . The elevators were quite warm and with all the lights and reflective surfaces reminded me of the old toy Easy Bake Oven . The Lobster Shack looked good so we ordered it for the next day at Half Moon Cay Lunch at a table for 2 with a view . The service and the food was very good in the MDR and it was nice and quite .
  7. Hello! I have called ship services and they weren't able to answer my question. For those of you who have sailed on the Nieuw Statendam or Koningsdam, are they able to accommodate 11 people in the main dining room or in a specialty dining restaurant? Ship services said no to the main dining room, but they were unsure of any specialty restaurants. We are looking to keep our group together for the first night and the remainder of the cruise, everyone will pretty much do their own thing. Thanks!
  8. Good, but some things are never the same second time around. Ship great, cabin fine, food average, entertainment a bit dire.
  9. I Have benefited from numerous reviews so I thought it was time I returned the favor. Here is my review of the 2/24-3/3 Western Caribbean itinerary on the Nieuw Statendam. There were four of us – DH, DS and DD. We had two cabins. DH and I were in a Neptune Suite and our adult children were in a veranda room 7134. Nice size veranda but the smallest bathroom I have ever seen. Embarkation – easy we arrived at the cruise terminal around 11 and were on board by 12 noon and both rooms were ready. FYI – there were seven cruise ships in port that day. Several of them seemed to follow us all week. There has been a lot of chatter on CC regarding Club Orange. Since Club Orange is included in a NS I purchased the upgrade for our children so they could embark with us and join us for dinner and breakfast. I loved Club Orange. I did not feel like I was in a fishbowl or on display in any way. I appreciated the quiet attentive service, the soft jazz music playing in the background that added the perfect touch of ambiance without being intrusive. The staff is top notch and they got to know our family quite well. We dined there for dinner four times and breakfast twice. It never seemed too busy and that’s the point. I liked the calm quiet atmosphere. I am not sure how many extra passes were sold. I would be interested to know. I think there are 20 NS on this ship. The food is the same as in the main dining room with an extra entre offered each night. Most of the meal is prepared in the kitchen within CO. As I mentioned, I feel CO is a wonderful benefit for NS guests. However, I don’t think I would purchase it separately if I were in a different room. Because it is expensive. Retreat area – We purchased two retreat cabanas for the trip. The family cabana is not big enough for four people and I did not want to break the rules and try to stuff four into a standard cabana. It was hot up there but we had shade and a private hot tub which was really nice. There were three stewards taking care of the guests all week. Jeff, Gerald and Alwine. Great guys, helpful and accommodating. You can order lunch and drinks. The area is open 9-5 each day. This was my happy place for the week. Ports – Truth be told we do a Caribbean cruise to relax not necessary to get off the ship. However, we did do an excursion on HMC the ECO Bike and Kayak. DS, DD and I were the only three on the excursion which took us around parts of the island – stables, stingray cove and to the Bone Fish Lagoon where we kayaked. This was a fun way to spend the morning away from the crowds and to see parts of the island I had not seen before. And there were crowds the Koningsdam was also in port that day. I have never seen so many people on HMC in the four times I have been there. We left early to go back to the ship. We don’t like the BBQ lunch so the Lido Deck was calling. Ocho Rios – Reynolds Pier - WHAT A DUMP. Holland America should be embarrassed to dock at this pier. It looks like abandoned industrial pier. It is a good half mile from the shopping area in the main cruise port and from fellow passengers told me who attempted to walk it, not an easy walk or pleasant. You walk on the side of a busy road around construction while local children try to sell you trinkets. My DS and DD did do a ship tour the Tranopy & Bobsled tour and enjoyed the experience. Georgetown, Grand Cayman – Knowing there were seven ships in port that day so we arranged a private catamaran tour on Sail with Friends. We took a taxi to the Cayman Island Yacht Club, easy and Alice from Sale with Friends called head for a taxi to meet us when we got back. It was a great day and a highlight of our trip. Cozumel – We only got off the ship to have a drink at Margaretville. Dining: We ate once in the main dining room which was a disappointment. That night the menu was not that good. We ate twice in the Pinnacle Grill which was delicious both times. We each had something different each night and never had an issue with the quality of the food. Lido Market was really good, we ate B/L there most days. The Dive In is wonderful. The NYC deli sandwiches are good according to DH and DS. Entertainment: we listed to the BB King band – good; the classical music group each night – very nice and the dueling piano players once – just okay IMO. The in room movie selection is great and there is a different movie in the Lido pool area each night. Disembarkation - Again easy we took the Holland America bus transfer tot he airport. The ship is beautiful and the staff is amazing. We had a wonderful time. If anyone has any questions I will be happy to try to answer them. Bon Voyage!
  10. Can anyone tell me if the Nieuw Statendam casino has a Let It Ride Poker gaming table?
  11. looking at booking oceanview stateroom on Deck 1 in area of #1116 ...soon!...on the NS and would appreciate any comments as to location pros & cons? preferably from those that have been on her.? thanks all!
  12. Looking to book a category FA (family cabin) as a party of five. It is very important to me that the pull down bunk be over the sofa rather than the bed. Does anyone know which FA staterooms have the bed over the couch? Holland America doesn't seem to know when asked over the phone. I was thinking that perhaps people who have been on the ship will have some insight.
  13. I am looking to do a Hawaii/ Tahiti cruise to celebrate our 50th Anniversary in the fall of 2021. I would like to do the long one from San Diego out as far as Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii and back to San Diego. The same cruise Amsterdam is doing this fall (2019) Before I get my hopes up to high does anyone have any inside information on Amsterdam for that time frame? As a back up I see this year Rotterdam is doing a shorter version in that time frame during the fall of 2020 and I could do that in the fall of 2021, if Rotterdam does it. I would just prefer the longer version. I thought I read something that Amsterdam was going to do a long Asia trip, but of course I can't find it now. Thanks for any info. Helen
  14. I have been considering continuing the process from the last two weeks with a continuing discussion. So here it is! This morning I was on Nieuw Statendam as we arrived in Fort Lauderdale. This afternoon I am on Nieuw Amsterdam getting ready to head on on pretty much the same itinerary as last week. Why? Because I can and because I haven't been on Nieuw Amsterdam yet. Additionally, it just worked out. Nieuw Amsterdam was booked several months ago. Contrary to my recent history, this was booked as a guarantee cabin like I did to begin with. I received a cabin assignment about 10 days ago getting a reasonable ocean view cabin. Last Friday I received an email from HAL advising me that my cabin had changed. That is why I am now sitting in a Verandah Stateroom on the Nieuw Amsterdam. For the record it is cabin 5100, pictures already provided to HALfacts. Because of several factors, this is not going to be an "apples to apples" comparison. The biggest reason is solo cabin on NS to Verandah on NA. I have much more room this week and a good location. This cabin is right next to the outside glass elevators on deck 5. This makes it very convenient to the Lido for meals, and equally accessible to the MDR and Showroom. The cabin is very nice, the stewards have introduced themselves and it is almost time for the muster drill. Since these cruises are a week apart, it will be easy to compare entertainment. NA has had the upgrade to the Music Walk, so the offerings should be similar. As I did for the last two weeks, the dinner menus for tonight are attached. Feb24LIdodinner.pdf Feb24dinner.pdf
  15. Good morning friends. I arrived in Ft. Lauderdale yesterday around 3:30 PM after a nice flight on United. I have a room on the starboard side mid ship on the Navigation deck. The upgrade ferry tried to get ahold of me but I didn't go on line until late last evening. Oh well, better luck next time. IIt was supposed to rain this morning but so far, so sunny. I can see Port Everglades from my hotel room anr the Oosterdam is visable as is the Caribbean Princess. More later.
  16. I just boarded the Nieuw Statendam today. Observations are based on cabin 1012, a single oceanview cabin. I will start by answering some common questions about the "in cabin" experience. The TV is large, wall mounted at the foot of the bed. It is mounted such that any access to any ports is difficult. It has been suggested that cabin stewards may be able to help you if you want/need to access these ports. I have attached an image showing the 9 "live" tv channels available. There are approximately 144 movies available for viewing. You may select them by seeing categories, or one listing of all movies. The navigation around the TV menu is different than Koningsdam as of last November. Other observations. I have been on Koningsdam twice, leaving last on November 11th last year. So far the Nieuw Statendam seems very familiar. It helps that I have the same cabin I have had on Koningsdam. Muster drill will be happening shortly, and then we will see how similar they are.
  17. Thinking of trying an inside cabin for a 1 week cruise. I keep reading mixed information regarding a love seat in these cabins. Does anyone know for sure if any of the inside cabins have a love seat? Thanks so much. Helen
  18. I am considering a solo cruise on Nieuw Statendam. It will have to be an inside cabin due to budget constraints. Any suggestions as to more spacious inside cabins or cabins to avoid?
  19. For those who are interested, Captain Jonathan Mercer took command of Amsterdam on 22 Jan 2019 to commence another Grand World Voyage. Today, they are in Santa Marta, Colombia, getting ready for their Panama Canal transit the day after tomorrow The captain's blog can be seen at http://captainjonathan.com/santa-marta-colombia/
  20. Is there any special or sale on internet pricing on the NS? Does HAL give out coupon books onboard? If so, how do I obtain one? Thank you.
  21. Has anyone stayed in this cabin? Looks like a larger obstructive balcony with some ocean view.
  22. Cruising next month on our 5th HAL cruise, 14 days B2B Caribbean. Question for those who have already been on the new ship since christening last month. What is the status of the electrical outlets beside the bed? Are there USB ports bedside for phone/tablet charging? I have a new CPAP that will require a plug in reasonable proximity to the bed. Do I need to bring an extension cord or are there close outlets that will suffice? Any input will be much appreciated. Thanks.
  23. I am not the biggest fan of the HAL website and find it difficult to navigate sometimes...so with that caveat... I was looking to see what the Amsterdam is doing after the World Cruise in 2020. The only thing I could find was some New England/Canada cruises from June through September and supposedly they are all sold out. That can't be possible can it? Does the site show a cruise as 'sold out' when they really mean 'not for sale yet'? Honestly I was looking (and hoping) that there would be another Grand Asia cruise in 2020 but if the Amsterdam is in the Atlantic in September that seems to lessen the odds of that.
  24. We don't leave Civitavecchia until December 5, but we wanted to start the thread a bit early, so that others on the roll call can join in. We have an amazing roll call, over 200 people, and I'm sure we will have an amazing cruise!
