  1. We've sailed on HAL's smallest and largest ships, and although the Nieuw Statendam was a lovely ship, we prefer the smaller ones. Of course nothing could compare to the intimate atmosphere on the Prinsendam, but ships like the Zuiderdam, Eurodam, Rotterdam, etc., are our in our future. Smooth Sailing! 🙂🙂🙂
  2. South Africa is in the midst of a sever Covid-19 crisis. Soon after Amsterdam arrived a team of doctors came on board and did some testing. They are waiting on the test results before they let the ship in. A particular concern is Amsterdam has 5 South African crew they are trying to get home. Not sure why the ships make their periodic trips to sea but I've heard rumors that wind is making anchoring difficult. Roy
  3. Really? I was watching the Amsterdam as she was heading there...somehow I missed the MSC ship. Oh well...I guess we should be hoping MSC goes in then as that would (hopefully) mean that the Amsterdam will get in too. Linda R.
  4. Thanks for the report, Rich. Happy to see that there is no more blue writing counting the passengers. Zaandam left Fort Lauderdale today, and probably Rotterdam tomorrow. Then everything will go quiet. We will just be waiting for Koningsdam and Amsterdam to settle. Tonight is our first Gala night on Rotterdam crossing to Europe, so we will dress up and have a steak for dinner. Oops! Forgot about Noordam and Maasdam...
  5. We always felt at home on the Amsterdam when Presty was managing the dining room, Jonathon Mercer was the Captain and Gene Young was the Cruise Director. Looks like only Presty will be there in the future.
  6. Orchestra on the move again while Amsterdam remains at anchor
  7. Yes things have changed! Zaandam scheduled for 2pm and Rotterdam has a slot tomorrow evening. Nieuw Statendam is scheduled to arrive 05.30 Wednesday morning and depart at 5pm Wednesday evening. Not sure if this is bunkering and provisions or is PE has just carried over the original schedule.
  8. When the Amsterdam gets going, where is the destination?
  9. today is World Health Organization Day, Beer Day, and Coffee Cake Day How about White Wine Coq Au Vin for today? 10. Amsterdam back at her original anchorage while Orchestra is still loitering without a purpose
  11. Both Amsterdam (0.6 kts) and MSC Orchestra (7.9 kts) underway as we speak. Amsterdam towards the coast and Orchestra away from the coast. Developments? Amsterdam now also headed away from the coast and starting to pick up speed
  12. "Dozens of cruise ships have been affected by COVID-19 outbreaks," is an accurate statement. A ship does not have to have a virus victim on it to be affected by the virus. For example, the world cruise on the Amsterdam was cut short by the virus even though no one on board had it.
  13. Our Caribbean cruise on the Koningsdam turned out to be the last one of the season. We knew there were things going on out there, whispers of a virus in far off places like China and only one case in California. When we boarded, the only pressing question asked was if we had traveled to China in the last two weeks. That was on March 4th. The day we returned on March 15th, we came home to a changed world. I didn't feel up to doing this review considering all that has unfolded, but a fellow traveler on our cruise encouraged me to do so, so I am finally sitting down to recall the wonderful time we had on this Southern Wayfarer Cruise. We take a yearly winter/spring break from our otherwise hectic life, and this was our 12th cruise on HAL and our longest cruise ever at 11 glorious days. We flew in from Boston to FLL the day before, and this time stayed at Riverside Hotel. We have tried a handful of hotels in FLL, all have been nice and had their own charm. This hotel is old but it was very well kept, we stayed in the tower and the room was quite lovely, despite older touches like brass in the bathroom and a small TV. The room was super clean and the staff very friendly. We had an early dinner in their outside restaurant by the river, 'The Boatyard'. The food was so delicious especially after my winter diet, how many times did I dream of this? I had a wonderful fish sandwich and a cosmopolitan as we watched the boats drift back and forth. Embarkation day was finally here, and it was quite seamless. As we walked up the gangway my husband and I gave each other that promised gangway kiss, so grateful to be able to share another cruise together! We accepted an upsell two days previous to a Signature Suite, so quickly went to our room to check it out. Last year we had sailed on Nieuw Statendam in a Signature Suite and had been crazy about it. On Koningsdam, there is a tub and very small shower vs. the very large shower and no tub on Nieuw Statendam. We much prefer the layout of the NS, as the shower was just so tiny on Koningdam. Aside from this, the room was spacious and identical in every great feature of her sister ship. We met our cabin steward Eli, and he and his assistant Martin were typical of the great HAL service we have always received. We didn't have one complaint and were pampered with a spotless cabin for the entire cruise. It was so nice to have two sea days to start with. We are early risers and sun/water lovers, so we were the among the first to be at the pool those first two mornings. We left our chairs to get breakfast at the Lido and bring it back to the nice tables by the Lido pool. There is nothing like having coffee and a wonderful omelette while looking out to sea! After a few more hours at the pool (and being the first ones in the water!) it was time to move on. We often try and "zig" while others "zag", a favorite phrase from Steve Birnbaum on how to navigate Disney. It works during a cruise, too, and we often try and be at places at off hours to minimize crowds. This cruise was pretty chill however, and didn't get ramped up at the pools until mid day/afternoon. We had excellent weather the entire cruise, except for our first stop: St. Maarten. We had booked a Golden Eagle Catamaran cruise (had done it 3 times before so knew it was a good one) and met outside in our designated spot when it started to rain. We walked to our destination in very gloomy conditions, lost about 25% of the people along the way as it was pretty depressing, but we pressed on, as we knew the weather in this place changes very quickly. So glad we did, about 15 minutes after we boarded the skies cleared and it was the most wonderful, beautiful day as we swam in those clear waters. Later that evening we met people that took bus tours, and that was hard to hear how they sat in buses while damp from the rain. It is always a risk, taking excursions, you just never know with the weather. After today, we had beautiful calm seas and gorgeous days. MDR service and food was outstanding. We had fixed late seating and had wonderful service from Gunawan and Marvin. We tried new things each night, it was presented so beautifully and the timing was perfect. Dawn, our wine stewardess, was just so sweet and proficient. This cruise had a different vibe from years past when things seemed rushed in the MDR.. Not sure if changes have been made, or because we were late fixed, or because there is a great manager, but it was noticeable. In my review to HAL I called it a "happy cruise". Looking back now, it makes me sad to think how everything has abruptly stopped. We had more days of pampering and adventure, I will continue the review later if there is an interest. For now, our thoughts are buzzing with concern for our families and our country and the world. And of course for all the wonderful HAL staff that have made cruising such an extraordinary pleasure to us! Thank You!!!
  14. Never slept on the Murphy bed so can’t help with that. On Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam breakfast for Neptune & Pinnacle guests is served in Club Orange, not in the Pinnacle Grill.
  15. @rjbean4 thank you for posting those videos. I’ll show the one from the Amsterdam to the folks. I’m sure they will see familiar faces. And you were right about the tissues! Thanks all. so I went out for a few things today, mostly produce, and when I got home at 3:15 there was a message from 2:15 saying they will both be home in an hour. WHAT??? of course they are driving themselves home. 🤦🏽‍♀️ I’ll do my best to keep them safe... @PiperHolliday I’m very glad your husband has stopped flying. ❤️
  16. Home - but packing for my Nieuw Amsterdam trip for April 28 - I always start packing early!
  17. How about two, Ramil and Mark. Both are bartenders, Ramil is currently on Oosterdam and Mark is on Nieuw Statendam. Both are well at this time. Also numerous others, as the service on HAL is always top notch!
  18. I would be packing for our TA on the Nieu Statendam to Amsterdam on 4/19. In Amsterdam, we had tickets to Keukenoff Gardens to see the Tulips ( something I have wanted to do for a very long time) Then off to Norway for a week followed by a 14 day thru the Baltics. Arriving home on 5/25. Had booked this a year ago. In all my thoughts of what could change our plans, this was not one of them. Today, I bought tulips at Publix and dream.....
  19. OK. This is good news indeed. Hope they can continue to get better. Its a scary thought about seeing the national news yesterday reporting that this week could be the worst yet. I know that I have reached a point for the good of mom and I that I now REFUSE to go out. We are not going to starve considering our frg/freezer is stuffed. I have found a facebook group that was started for the Rotterdam and Zaandam. Found some videos that have been done by crew on some of the other ships. I know this one is a big priority since its from the Amsterdam and does include Captain Mercer at the end. I also found one done on the Veendam, Zuiderdam and the Koningsdam. Another one was including the medical team sounding the ships whistle but not sure from which ship. Enjoy everyone and grab some tissues.
  20. Tomorrow Father, along with Nieuw A once again Disregard that Fath they took them both off the schedule. State of flux at the moment
  21. We would have disembarked the Nieuw Amsterdam on April 4th, after a quick 7 day Caribbean cruise. We booked it because it was a HAL ship we hadn't been on before and we were going to be in Florida, so, why not? HAL even gave me an excellent rate, one I'm afraid I won't see for a while. Today we would be sitting in my daughter's apartment, waiting for her to get off work. We would stay a few more days until we check into a condo on Friday, for a month long stay. These next few weeks are going to be very hard for us.
  22. Should be second sea day on Nieuw Amsterdam from Ft. Lauderdale to Western Med ending in Barcelona on the 28th. It would be about lunch time followed by classic cruise dilemma "is sitting on deck with a drink and a book doing something or doing nothing." Hope you get to do that trip another year Horizon Chaser. I would love to be at the wonderful game lodge again in South Africa. Best of luck to everyone.
  23. I hope not! I have a western transatlantic from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale booked for November. It will really depend on when the ports open again and travel can start up. Perhaps they will reduce the number of ships allocated to Europe as they currently are listing Nieuw Statendam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Zuiderdam, Veendam, Zaandam and Rotterdam. I can envisage them sending just the 3 larger ships for a shortened European season 🤞
  24. I would be on the Amsterdam, on the 2020 GWV. Today is a sea day, and we’re half way between the Seychelles and Mombasa, Kenya where the ship stays overnight. I would be carefully packing my safari gear and checking my camera batteries, getting ready to head off on an overnight safari to a lodge at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. For the eighth time, I’d be checking with the other couple going with us to see if we dress in the evening, or if casual wear is fine for the whole thing. I would also be on day one of my malaria medication, and making sure the insect repellent was packed. In an alternate universe, I’m about to have the experience of a lifetime. Thanks for asking!
  25. It seems that all of the suites, on both the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam with the exception of the Pinnacle, have the TV over the back of the Couch. However the cabins from Verandah on down have the TV positioned correctly so that it can be seen from the bed or the couch. Who in the world, at HAL, approved the over the couch design? The Neptune Suites, on the Oosterdam and Volendam, are the same size 380 square feet as the Koningsdam, however you're correct that those ships have the separate dressing area off the bathroom where the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam do not. We do like to watch TV sometimes and the positioning of the TV over the Couch would be more than annoying after paying the price for a Neptune Suite.
