  1. Amsterdam will be in prime viewing area (where I can gaze at "my deck") at the AS dock from 0800-2200. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. The only other ship in port is Regatta at the AJ dock from 1200-2300. The forecast calls for rain early in the day with overcast skies later on. High will be 64F/18C and low will be 54F/12C. Sunrise is at 4:22 am and sunset at 9:45 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam on Monday.
  2. Hello, Does HAL usually have any kind of Halloween night party or event on Nieuw Amsterdam? We will be sailing on 10/31/19 and am wondering if we should bring even the simplest of costumes to make it more festive. Thanks!
  3. Just returned form a 1-week Alaska cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam. As always, we enjoyed our cruise very much. The Alaska cruise was our 3rd time on the Nieuw Amsterdam (all Alaska cruises). The one thing that did bother me was the room smelled a little stuffy and the duvet had quite a few stains on it when I look at the bedding. Does anyone know if HAL will be modernizing the bedding some time in the near future?
  4. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Weather is back to normal in Juneau - rain is predicted for each day this week - there is even a flood warning for part of Monday. The high temperature will be 65F/18C and the low 54F/12C. Sunrise is at 4:15 am and sunset at 9:51 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  5. We are sailing Oct 29 and have veranda cabin 6114 which is by the elevator. Has anyone had a problem with traffic on this area?
  6. We were on NA in April of 2017, and the casino was non-smoking after renovations to the piano bar area across the way... I had assumed it would remain non-smoking, but the HAL website - supposedly updated to June 2019 - does NOT list Nieuw Amsterdam as one of the completely non-smoking casinos. Can someone who has sailed recently tell me whether HAL has reverted to smoking in the NA casino? Our booking depends on the answer... Many thanks!
  7. It's nice to have two HAL ships in port but, unfortunately, we will only get glimpses of them because of their docks. Westerdam will be at the CT dock from 0800-1800 and Amsterdam at the FKL dock from 1400-2300. Also in port are Norwegian Jewel at the AJ dock from 0700-1315 and Eclipse at the AS dock from 0730-2000. The forecast is for "considerable cloudiness with occasional showers" (60% chance of rain). High will be 65F/18C and the low 55F/13C. Sunrise is at 4:09 am and sunset at 9:57 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Volendam on Friday.
  8. We will be staying in one of the rooms w/ an un-renovated bath and it appears they still have the wall mounted hoover style hairdryers. Do all cabins also have a handheld for use at desk, or only ones with renovated baths where the hoover style hairdryers have been removed? Me Mum does not want to bring her normal hairdryer if she doesn't need to for bag weight purposes - it is a rather large and heavy salon/professional grade handheld.
  9. Good morning, all! We are sailing on the Nieuw Statendam at the end of this month. We've cruised on a number of the HAL larger ships, but never on the largest Pinnacle class. We were just notified that there is an embarkation schedule that starts at the top deck and works down (Neptunes and 4&5* at any time, of course). Since we're on the Beethoven Deck (4) they want us to arrive at 3:30 for a 5:00 sailing. That seems really, really late to me. We usually like to board between noon and 1pm. Has anyone gone through this embarkation procedure, and if so, what was your experience? Thanks in advance -- I appreciate your thoughts.
  10. Does anyone have recent experiences in the hair salon on the Amsterdam to share? How are they at hair-cutting, color, highlights, anything you've had done? Prices? Recommended stylist?
  11. Quick question......I called Holland direct and received two different answers. We booked the Nieuw Statendam room 7107 balcony room. I know the balcony is larger. I can see from the deck plan it's true. Well another agent said the room was also a bit larger than a regular balcony room. Was wonder if anyone can confirm. The 1st agent said the room was NOT larger. Not sure who to believe. Thanks!
  12. Cannot find much information on Tamarind on the Nieuw Statendam. When the ship came out, Tamarind was supposed to have an outdoor eating area overlooking the Sea View pool area. Has anyone actually experienced this and how enjoyable (or not) was it?
  13. Anyone able share experience with any of these three cabins above main showroom? Bit worried we could assigned one if we do an “E” guarantee. Many thanks!
  14. A full house in Juneau with five cruise ships on Monday. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Seabourn Sojourn tendering from 0700-2300, Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215, and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. The first half of the week has nice weather forecast (the end of the week is looking rainy). Monday is supposed to be partly cloudy with a high of 78F/26C and a low of 58F/14C. Sunrise is at 4:05 am and sunset at 10:00 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  15. Anyone know where aft any noise from engines might affect peaceful enjoyment of one of these cabins if we choose an EE GTY and get assigned to this area? Many thanks....
  16. Greetings....been awhile since we did a guarantee (after an awful experience) but we are seriously considering a long trip to/from San Diego. Our agent has contacted HAL and every cabin in every class is a GTY. We are worried even an EE oceanview could result in us being in the furthest aft reaches of the ship. Any thoughts about the situation (why all GTY, for example) most appreciated.
  17. After reading so many threads, I've now lost the thread where it discussed the hidden spots (gems) on Nieuw Amsterdam to lounge outside and inside as well as hidden gems of treats. For example, I remember reading a post about emergency exit doors that are not really emergency exit doors and take you to a quieter outdoor deck area. Or one that stated how to get to the Crows Nest. Also, any other hidden gems like the Tea Time (that too looked fun). Thanks!
  18. 🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂
  19. Two HAL ships are celebrating the 4th in Juneau. Noordam will be at the CT dock from 0800-1800 and Amsterdam will be at the FKL dock from 1400-2300. Also in port are Eclipse at the AS dock from 0730-2000 and Norwegian Jewel at the AJ dock from 1100-2100. The weather is going all out for Independence Day with mostly sunny skies and a high of 82F/28C (low is 58F/14C). Sunrise is at 4:00 am and sunset at 10:04 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Volendam on Friday.
  20. Earlier today I decided to see if I could find a more recent picture to see what Our beloved Nieuw Amsterdam III looks like as she is being scrapped. Se was our firs HAL ship back in December, 1988. We were on board for her 12 day Christmas Cruise when we did the partial canal transit on Christmas day with the Rotterdam V. We have been at sea for the Holidays every year ever since. I am actually currently working on digitizing the pictures from that cruise by using a negative scanner to scan the negatives and then some photo editing software to clean them up as much as I can. Yes I still have the negatives for the cruises we have done till going digital in 2004. When I found this picture I was speechless and thought about all the memories from the time we cruised on her. Till this day we have more days on her than any of the other Dam Ships we have been on at a total of 107 days (9 cruises) but our days on Nieuw Amsterdam IV are #2 (96 days & 13 cruises) so the next time we can get on her will hopefully be enough to take over the top spot for us.
  21. We will be sailing on the Amsterdam on a 7 day Alaskan voyage next Monday. I will be attempting to provide daily blog updates, take photos, and answer questions any of you may have. Please post here or on my blog. https://cruisingrobsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/ms amsterdam
  22. Anyone know who the Pinnacle Grill Manager is on the Nieuw Statendam? Did they transfer the manager from the Koningsdam?
  23. Hi. Can anyone tell me if the afts on deck 5 and 6 are covered or partially covered? Any reason to choose one deck over the other? Many thanks. Fran :)
  24. A busy start for the month of July with five ships in port. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Viking Orion tendering from 0800-1630, Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215, and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. The nice weather continues and the prediction is that it will last through the week. The afternoon should be mostly sunny with a high of 76F/24C and a low of 55F/13C. Sunrise is at 3:57 am and sunset at 10:06 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  25. I am a loyal HAL fan, not the most experienced cruiser, but have completed 3 back to back cruises and one re-positioning cruise, covering the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, Western Europe, Baltic countries, Japan to Alaska and most recently from 2 June to 23 June the Norwegian fjords on the Nieuw Statendam. My purpose in this review is not to deal with every aspect of the cruise on NS, as most topics are well covered in the many reviews published since its launch. It suffices to say she is a beautiful ship, well designed in all respects (other than the closed in effect of the Promenade Deck), and is tastefully finished in its furnishing and art works. She is operated like a well- oiled machine. Her Officers and crew do an amazing job. Rather my purpose is to give my opinion on a few issues, with which some may disagree, but in relation to which, if there are enough others who agree, may give HAL cause to make some changes which I think could alter the experience of future passengers on the NS very much for the better. For me the problem with the NS does not lie in any way with the ship or its crew. The problem is with the passengers. Those we came in contact with were very nice people – it is just there were too many of them. In the first 7 day leg of the cruise they had not learned how to spread more evenly between the many venues. Everywhere seemed crowded. During the second 14 day leg passengers were definitely better distributed but it was still not easy to find a table in the Lido during peak periods (we were in a party of 4 which probably made it a little more difficult) and there were still queues waiting to be allocated tables in the Main Dining Room. We also found during both parts of the cruise that it was difficult to find a quiet place to play cards or just to relax and enjoy the quiet of ocean travel. The effect for me, compared to previous cruises on the Eurodam, Noordam and Volendam, was a sense that the somewhat illusory feeling of a degree of some exclusivity which HAL managed to create on those ships, had been lost. There are a few things which could be done to address some of these issues. Our observation was that the covered front pool area was much underutilized except during meal hours. The reason for this was noise. Documentaries were often shown on the large screen during various times of the day. Very few people seemed interested in them but everyone had to deal with the blaring sound which made conversation difficult. Other than meal times this large seating area was virtually deserted. At night when movies were shown there was often no more than 4 or 5 people watching. On previous cruises we would often sit in this area and just enjoy the world going by. I would suggest that the large screen and sound system not be used at all during the day. This will take pressure off other areas. Thought might be given to whether there is any benefit in showing films at night on cruises to colder areas or whether some better use could be made of the area. During the day we also experienced that talks were given in public lounge areas. On one occasion a talk was being given using a public address system which was so loud you could not hear yourself think in the adjoining lounge area. We and others got up and vacated the lounge. This could be easily avoided by ensuring any talks are conducted in isolated areas or closed rooms. Although we had an overall very enjoyable cruise I personally will be unlikely to cruise again on the NS or the Koningsdam because of the sense of loss of exclusivity to which I have referred. I query whether cruise lines have made the right decisions in the move to bigger and bigger ships. It is now well known that Amsterdam has concerns about the flood of tourists associated with cruise ships and that Venice is concerned about the effect of cruise ships. Bergen now intends to place limits on the number of tourists which may visit that city. I love cruising and will remain loyal to HAL for as long as possible because I think it is a very well- run company, which trains its staff to serve its clients well and which in my experience has always been responsive to any concerns raised. But for now my future cruising will be restricted to HAL’s smaller ships.
