  1. All, we had a fantastic Thanksgiving cruise on the Nieuw Statendam, and I meant to write a nice little trip report as soon as we got home, but sickness, school, and parenting a five year old got in the way— please excuse my tardiness and please take this little review at its value! Overall we had a fabulous trip! I’ve attempted a photo upload— just a few pictures; I hope it works as planned. We flew to FLL a day early, and spent the night in Dania Beach at the Hilton Home2Suites. We like Home2 as a nice alternative to other Hilton properties— room layout is good for family travel, large rooms, nice shower in the bathroom, and free breakfast. There is a complimentary airport shuttle between 5am and midnight, and a shuttle to Port Everglades is available, $20 per person round trip from hotel-PE-airport. Day1– Our son was bouncing off the walls ready to get on the ship! He was so excited to go back to Club HAL, and enjoy HAL pizza... easy shuttle ride to the ship, and we arrived at the terminal around noon. Our boarding docs gave us an arrival time of 1:30, but there was no way we could entertain ourselves or the kid until then— so we arrived early, waited in line for 25 minutes then boarded! As stated so frequently here, NS is really beautiful. Modern design, muted colors with little pops of brighter colors made for a really Impressive design scheme, in my opinion. Our room, deck five, cabin 5046, even though it was right by the stairwell/elevator lobby, was very quiet. I felt like it was a little small. The bathroom was really nice. We had early fixed dining (5pm!) which worked out great, because By the time we finished eating each night, our son was ready to attend Club HAL, which opened each evening at 7. Day2– Half Moon Cay is always gorgeous! One of our favorite places. We walked down the beach past the pirate ship bar and found some loungers in the shade. We just enjoyed a lazy beach day. Glorious! Day3– At sea. Really fun day on board— I enjoyed geeking out at the Origins film presented by the cruise director, which told the history of HAL. I thought it was interesting and informative. My son joined me at flower arranging, and then the highlight of his cruise was at lunch, when the bartender made him his first Shirley Temple! Club HAL sea day hours were 9-11:30am, then 1-4pm, and then 7-11pm. Dinner tonight was a Gala night, and it was interesting— our first experience observing folks being turned away for improper dress on the MDR (in this case, those on shorts were asked to change clothes). We enjoyed music each night in the Music Walk- this is really fabulous and the quality of the performances is outstanding. Day4– Turks and Caicos. For us, another beach day. We walked off the ship and found surf side loungers— we went further down the beach so we ended up paying $20, which was totally fine. We like Grand Turk as the beach is so pretty— this was our second time here, and the water is so pretty! Day5– In Amber Cove, we did an independent excursion through Marysol Tours— horseback riding and beach day. It was so much fun. Our son loved it, and our guide was wonderful with him. Afterward we shopped for a little in the port area. I thought it was a really nice port— we’ve been to Punta Cana before, and think the DR is really a gorgeous country, and Amber Cove definitely is surrounded by some beautiful scenery! Today was Thanksgiving Day, and the menu was lovely— ham, turkey, beef— best part is that I didn’t have to cook or clean, and my son got to eat another pizza, lol! Day6– Sea day. Tonight we ate at Tamarind. We love Tamarind— definitely our favorite restaurant at sea. Our sweet server brought our son a pizza! I got to enjoy a spa day— Swedish massage and mani/pedi. Very nice facilities. Day 7– Key West was amazing. We have been before but in our opinion, cruising into Key West was more fun than driving! We went through passport control on the ship here— a little bit of a nightmare lining everyone up, but generally it was okay, and even nicer once we realized there’d be no customs in FLL upon arrival! We walked on our own in Key West— super easy for us, visiting the Truman White House, the Hemingway House, Southernmost point, followed by lunch at El Siboney Cuban restaurant, and then a walk up Duval St to Mallory Square. My husband had to watch the Iron Bowl on the iPad so getting back to homebase at kickoff was critical. Thankfully Auburn won... We flew home a day after our cruise ended, choosing to visit my husband’s grandmother in Naples. In Summary— Another wonderful HAL cruise. We enjoy the family atmosphere, and son enjoys Club HAL. We are paying careful attention to the proposed changes to Club/High Score. Service was outstanding— our cabin attendants and MDR attendants anticipated our desires and went above and beyond to cater to our little one. We loved the World Stage— really technologically impressive! I wish the standard verandah cabins were larger and the first fixed dining seating was just 30 minutes later. I loved that the Lido Pool actually had a staircase rather than just ladders. In hindsight I would’ve booked an aft cabin rather than a forward cabin, my mistake. Thanks for reading along!

  4. Cruise December 2019 Holiday. Family of 6. Fifth time on HAL, 1st Holiday trip. Does anyone know if HAL has a "special" night planned in the dining room for Christmas? We usually book one or two nights of our trip at one of the specialty restaurants while on board. Not sure how we should plan for the holiday this trip. Thanks much to all.

  14. Thinking about a Caribbean cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam this Spring. Family of 3, including a 14 year old. We would prefer mid-ship, lower and a nice balcony. I've read about the possible view of the tops of the lifeboats, I don't think we'd care about that, but we would want a good balcony and a quiet cabin. Suggestions? Thanks.

  18. Looking at these aft cabins on the NS and they are all available for a cruise...is there something wrong with them? Would love comments from anyone who has been in them. We're looking at taking our family (11) on a Caribbean cruise next year...these "sound nice". but concerned so many are available.
  19. Thanks for reading. I'll do my best to answer any questions you might have. My husband and I left home on Friday to drive to Fort Lauderdale, which should have taken about 4 hours, but took 5 because of accidents. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. They are remodeling it, but it was nice and had parking. We ate at Duffy’s, which could have been better. We drove ourselves to the port Saturday morning. The port was busy. We parked and walked over to the terminal. We dropped our bag off with a porter, had a quick check in and went aboard right before noon. The staterooms were ready. We dropped our things off and got lunch at New York Pizza, which was great. We headed up to the Retreat. At the Retreat, there was a mix up on the cabanas. Not the first time this has happened and probably won’t be the last. Always print off your reservation. It was odd, that the cabana boys said service didn’t start until the next day. It was brought up that on other cruises we had service the first day. They did start service after others asked too. They brought us champagne, frozen grapes, and chocolate covered strawberries. Things that were supposed to be included with the cabana during the week, you had to ask for, like slippers. I do love the Retreat, but this year, the service was a bit lacking in my opinion. It does keep you away from the crowds at the Lido pool. We mostly ate in the Lido. I like their breakfast. We ate from the Dive In and the one thing that we did not like was the chicken sandwich. The chicken was very dry. We would get to the Lido when it opened. There were many more self-serve items, than my last cruise. Watching people take the bread and cookies, made me not want to take any. I did find some desserts I liked and would take a dessert before others; it was my first stop. We went to some of the entertainment. Tried to watch the dancers on the Main Stage. Stayed a bit for the mentalist. Stayed for the comedian, I think his name was Steve. Stopped in the BB Kings, but we had spots at the pianos. Joe and Joey were on board. I enjoyed more songs from one than the other. We also spent some time at the smokeless casino. Just a heads up, if you play the quarter machine. The one where you put quarters in and it pushes out quarters, it did not pay correctly on the bonus. We checked when we got the bonus and it did not give the correct amount and had to ask someone to fix it. They gave us the right amount, not sure if the machine was fixed. We tried most of the bars and found two favorite bartenders, Jenny and Alvin at the Billboard Bar, next to the pianos. We were in 7139, first time being in an aft. It was a great, didn’t feel any different, but we were on the side without a working azipod. Our stewards were wonderful and emptied our minibar, filled our fruit basket, and kept our ice bucket iced. It was cleaned and well kept. We choose to self-disembark. We walked out of the room at 8 and was off the ship and in the car by 8:30. All in all it was a great cruise, can't wait till June to sail again.
  20. We are traveling with carry-on luggage only. My suitcase is very lightweight nylon, with no structure to it. It is a carry over shoulder and convert to backback style (about 22 pounds). My question is: Can I carry it on? The bag would be squished if piled with other luggage on top of it. I have had my flatiron for my hair damaged before.
  21. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215, Regatta will be tendering from 1300-2100, and Solstice will be at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. The weather continues to be rainy but there is some sun predicted during the week. There is a 60% chance of rain throughout the day with a high of only 58F/14C and a low of 47F/8C. Sunrise is at 4:42 am and sunset at 9:25 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  22. A very busy day in Port Everglades with eight cruise ships in port, one of which is making her first visit to FLL. Eurodam will be at pier 19 (port to) from 0515-1700 and then heading out on a 10-day Panama Canal Sunfarer cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (02 Dec 0800-1500); Oranjestad, Aruba (04 Dec 1300-2300); Willemstad, Curacao (05 Dec 0800-1600); Panama Canal (Cruising Canal) (07 Dec 0500-0500); Colon, Panama (07 Dec 1500-2000); Puerto Limon, Costa Rica (08 Dec 0730-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (11 Dec a0700) Nieuw Statendam will be pier 26 (starboard to) from 0545-1700. She is going on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (03 Dec 0800-1500); San Juan, Puerto Rico (04 Dec 1300-2300); St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (05 Dec 0800-1700); Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (07 Dec 0800-1500); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (08 Dec a0700) Other ships in port are Adventure OTS at pier 29 from 0445-1730, Allure OTS at pier 18 from 0500-1530, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0400-1600, Celebrity Edge at pier 25 from 0600-1530, and Regal Princess at pier 21 from 0530-1600. The eighth cruise ship is the very new Sky Princess at pier 2 from 0430-2200. She made her maiden voyage in October of this year and is arriving from Europe. I could not find whether she plays "The Love Boat" theme (and we likely will not find out with a 10 pm sailing) but the other "Royal" class ships (Regal, Royal, and Majestic) do. The PTZtv webcams can be found at https://www.portevergladeswebcam.com/ and https://www.ftlauderdalewebcam.com/. Next up: Koningsdam and Veendam on Wednesday, 4 December.
  23. Happy Thanksgiving! What are the current shows on the main stage on the Nieuw Statendam? We’re sailing on her in a few weeks and am curious !
  24. Earlier today I decided to see if I could find a more recent picture to see what Our beloved Nieuw Amsterdam III looks like as she is being scrapped. Se was our firs HAL ship back in December, 1988. We were on board for her 12 day Christmas Cruise when we did the partial canal transit on Christmas day with the Rotterdam V. We have been at sea for the Holidays every year ever since. I am actually currently working on digitizing the pictures from that cruise by using a negative scanner to scan the negatives and then some photo editing software to clean them up as much as I can. Yes I still have the negatives for the cruises we have done till going digital in 2004. When I found this picture I was speechless and thought about all the memories from the time we cruised on her. Till this day we have more days on her than any of the other Dam Ships we have been on at a total of 107 days (9 cruises) but our days on Nieuw Amsterdam IV are #2 (96 days & 13 cruises) so the next time we can get on her will hopefully be enough to take over the top spot for us.
  25. The Signature Sisters will be making their weekly visit to Juneau with Eurodam at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Seabourn Sojourn tendering from 0800-2000, Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215, and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Monday is shaping up to be the nicest of the next 5 days with only a 10% chance of rain and partly cloudy skies. The high will be 73F/23C (the highest for the week) and the low 55F/13C. Sunrise is at 4:28 am and sunset at 9:39 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
