  1. August 14 to Sept 3, 2019 It was a great trip, hope I have done it justice here. August 13. Our flight from DFW to Amsterdam was uneventful, which we like. We got through the airport and out to a taxi stand. We took the next taxi and what do you know it was a Tesla! Neat. We had a nice ride to out hotel. We like to stay at Motel One in Europe. Not elegant or spacious, we are there for just around 24 hours, but they usually have nice convenient locations, which this one did. We have visited Amsterdam several times in the past but there are still things for us to see. This time we did not want to rush or be on a schedule so we just walked around the district we were in, found a nice place for an early dinner/late lunch. We sat at the window and watched the bikes go by. We were across the street from the Rembrant House Museum. We did more walking and shopping, had a couple drinks in our hotel's bar and called it a night. August 14.After a nice nights sleep, we were refreshed and ready to go. Our hotel had a very nice breakfast which we took advantage of. After a relaxing morning in the neighborhood we asked the hotel for a taxi for us. This one was not a Tesla, and the driver had to call someone to get directions for our boat. He handed me his phone. I was asked if I was sure we were going on the River Boat Navigator and I had to explain we were on an ocean cruise ship. We got to the correct dock and dropped our luggage and went to the waiting area to be checked in about 11:30.. Checkin was very quick and we were told our cabin was ready, nice surprise. Embarkation was suddenly done. We ran into a couple we had cruised with twice before and set up our Trivia team. We had last been on the Navigator last year after a dry dock and it had just recently had a dry dock Some things that I have noticed since the most recent dry dock: Some of the woodwork in our cabin had been painted, the shallow shelves near the door to the cabin between the bathroom and the closet were gone. After the dry dock last year an addition small set of drawers had been added in the closet, this most recent dry dock changed the original set of drawers and the recently added set of drawers into one set of drawers, basically the same drawer space, but the bottom three drawers each are as wide as the two sets of drawers had been. I missed the shallow shelves outside the closet. I had used this for our privacy/make up room door hangers and the breakfast order door hangers, a place to put room keys. The furniture in Prime 7 and LaVeranda has been changed. The window covering in Prime 7 have also been changed. . The Chihuly glass pieces that had been on the walls at the entrance to Prime 7. were gone, but could not find anyone who knew where they went. If I am remembering correctly, our cabin door did not have the heavy closer that it use to have. When room service came in the morning it was much easier for me to open the door and there was no struggle for the staff member to get hold of the door to walk through than I seem to remember. There is new carpeting through out. And I must admit that the first day as I was walking down the hallway, I thought oh no someone has gotten sick and I stepped over the “mess” only to realize it was part of the carpet design. Odessa, our cabin steward came to meet us and asked it we needed anything. I had called Regents guest services a couple months prior and what I had asked for was waiting for us, with the liquor being delivered that evening.
  2. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated September 6th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 3. Hi, does anyone know if the tables are the same in the dining room as Koningsdam? I really want to make sure we have a window this time. We didn't have one in Norway and it was really disappointing! I looked on halfacts, they only had Koningsdam. Thanks for any info.
  4. The few books we saw walking by look to be the more informational/travel type that you now find in the libraries that have been moved to the Crow’s Nest. Definitely NOT like the great libraries still found on Amsterdam, Volendam, etc. DH’s theory is that most everyone reads on a tablet these days so the libraries we love are passé... suspect he’s right. So yes, load up your tablets and eReaders or you’ll be disappointed.
  5. Hello All, (Note: I may cross post this on the Holland America forum too) So last July my extended family and I took a round trip Alaska cruise out of Vancouver on Holland America's Niuew Amsterdam. I researched the heck out of it and specifically selected that route and boat. It was my first cruise and I LOVED IT! So this year has been insane with work, but i have a little break now and am toying with the idea of a last minute Alaska cruise here in the next few weeks for my wife and I - just to get to some cooler weather and really unwind. Of course as I look at the options, I keep coming back to the same decision points I ran into last year (ports, ship, route, time, etc.). We would only do a week so a land tour is not really on the table this year either I'm afraid. Given the last minute compromises (i.e. limited cabin choice, September weather, etc.), I am only considering this if I can do it for a tolerable sum. Having said that, a balcony is a must as is a more true "inside passage". Anyway, I have narrowed the choices somewhat to these two options: 1 - Holland America's Nieuw Amsterdam - Balcony Guaranteed - 08/31-09/07 - Vancouver to Vancouver Roundtrip (note: this is the same cruise we did last year) Ship built in 2004; refit in early 2017 2 - Holland America's Westerdam - Signature Suite Guaranteed - 09/01-09/08 - Seward to Vancouver (Southbound) Ship built in 2010; refit at end of 2017 The boats are similar in size (about 2K passengers) but the Westerdam is an older class of ship (and 6 years older of course). The ports are, of course, almost identical - Glacier Bay, Juneau, Skagway & Ketchikan (besides the disembarkation obviously). However, the Nieuw Amsterdam does offer the Tracy Arm Excursion "from the boat" on the way to Juneau (assuming that excursion isn't already booked). The combined ship and airfare cost is only about $300 different for these two. The Items that come to mind on these two are: 1. Newer boat is generally going to be nicer - win Nieuw Amsterdam 2. Signature suite (which we had last year) is DEFINITELY nicer than a regular balcony cabin - win for Westerdam 3. Guaranteed cabins are always a crapshoot, BUT the Signature suites on Westerdam are virtually all located in great areas so the risk is low. Conversely, I (who am a bit prone to motion sickness), would be gambling a lot more with a "guaranteed" balcony (they are all over the ship - win for Westerdam. 4. Flying in/out of Vancouver is a lot simpler, cheaper and less tiring than flying in to Anchorage. The latter requires transport from Anchorage to Seward as well. Southbound would be ideal if we were doing a land tour, but we aren't - win for Nieuw Amsterdam. 5. As noted above, I am a bit prone to motion sickness. The Nieuw Amsterdam route is pretty much ideal for me, whereas the Westerdam crosses the Gulf of Alaska (in September) and could be rougher. If the Westerdam stopped at Hubbard Glacier it might be more "worth it" but it doesn't - win Nieuw Amsterdam. 6. The times in port are almost a wash, but the Westerdam does have a small advantage here for Juneau as it docks and leaves earlier (and in September it will get dark around 7:00 pm so any excursions running after that may not work out) - win Westerdam. 7. Overall route is almost a wash, but since the Nieuw Amsterdam does "pull over" on the way to Tracy Arm for a small boat excursion, it offers that option. Of coruse I have node idea if it is already fully booked. - win Niuew Amsterdam (small). Anyway, does anyone care to chime in on any of this with their thoughts/opinions? Anything I haven't thought of here??? No wrong answers of course!!! Itineraries:
  6. I’ve always heard how nice the Brilliance CL is and we were hoping to experience it on the May TA to Amsterdam but due to the large number of D+ on that sailing, D+ was excluded.
  7. We were on the Rotterdam in April and there was containers of lemonade available all day long that you could help yourself to. Can anyone confirm if that's the case on the Nieuw Statendam or if lemonade is only available during set meal times?
  8. Yes, the Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam have Neptunes on the corners of deck 10. On those ships the balcony definitely does not wrap around to the front, which can be seen at the very end of this video: http://halfacts.com/signature-class/10006-nieuw-amsterdam/
  9. We will be arriving in Amsterdam at 10:00 on a Saturday and taking the Train directly to the Port to board HAL Rotterdam. Is there any where around the Port/Train station where we can purchase wine to Carry Aboard? Even at the Airport possibly? We will try to buy some at Duty Free - but just in case, wondered if there might be an easy to access location. TIA LeslieW
  10. I was on the cruise for the entire 2 weeks. The ports of call were originally Amsterdam, then Bergen, Flam, and Geiranger Norway 3 days in succession, Akureyri and Reykjavik Iceland, Belfast and Dublin, Ireland. LeHavre was substituted for Amsterdam, but by the time we got there, the weather was too rough to dock. We sailed to our 3 ports in Norway and I shopped at the stores and had 3 beautiful excursions! Flam even had “The Mall of Norway” right adjacent to the port. It was announced while we were in Norway that the weather would have high winds & waves on our return itinerary from Iceland, so for safety of the passengers, Iceland was cancelled. Instead, we sailed to Hellesylt, then Aselund, Norway, again with stunning beauty! The only light rain I remember (with the emphasis on light) was on our walking tour in Bergen. Next we were to have 2 sea days then stop in Greenock, Scotland to also make up for missed ports. We sailed into the harbor and it was announced that a Naval vessel was at the dock we needed and it needed repairs. They said they figured our new arrival time would be 1-1/2 hour later. As we waited, the seas became really rough and the fog rolled in. I believe we had the port pilot onboard. It was announced to be too dangerous to dock. That’s when all the rioting began. I hear calls of “REVOLUTION!” In the stairwells. My husband and I chose to stay away. We had 1 more Sea day, then arrived in Belfast, Ireland. It did have some rain for a bit, but by the time we arrived at our tour destination, it was gone. The following day was Dublin, with partly cloudy weather to beautiful blue skies and , later, a few drops of rain. We had one Sea day as we sailed back to Southampton. Hope that clears it up for you!
  11. If I get to the cruise ship terminal early .. Is there a canal tour that leaves rightt in front of the terminal ?
  12. We attended the Orange party on the Nieuw Statendam. It was packed and super fun. Lots of Dutch goodies. I agree the orange party shirt sold on the ship is hideous so I would suggest bringing your own, or a tie or some beads...it’s just a fun excuse to celebrate the heritage of the cruise line and The Netherlands.
  13. I believe he said High Score on the Oosterdam. The Amsterdam will not be in Alaska in 2020.
  14. Step 1 Dancers: not good news based on my Nieuw Statendam experience. Altering the Piano Club/Mix Area for more space to enjoy the performers is good news as long as the performers are worth it. As a Dolphin Deck "resident"--always keep looking for my oars in my closet, just in case 😀, knowing that I can expect floor to ceiling showers is good news. I really liked what I experienced on Nieuw Statendam. The stateroom's TV systems, at least on her sister Zaandam, do need upgrading as best they can do.
  15. We are currently cruising the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel on Scenic Pearl. There are no water level issues whatsoever. Today been cloudy with sunny breaks, although it is drizzling slightly now. It is dinner time though so it doesn't matter. Thank so much notamermaid for all your posts over the past year or so. We are loving our first river cruise.
  16. My surprise was that he mentioned the "High Score" on the Amsterdam. That ship is used mainly for Grand and World Voyages. Not too many families are on that ship unless they go to Alaska in the summer. I hope they will not move ships around for those voyages.

    Nieuw Statendam

Greetings from a retired middle/high school teacher. I did a solo cruise this past summer on the Rotterdam for 20 days. I did attend the first solo gathering on the first night and met a woman that I ended up doing a lot of activities with during the cruise. I had Anytime Dining and had almost no problems with that. One night I had been seated with The Complainers (Hi, my name is So and So and I'll be cruising a different line from now on). The next night they started to seat me with them again and I hung back, got the host's attention and said no. He came up with a different seating assignment for me and I apologized on the way over to the new table, but explained that I just couldn't listen to them again. He was cool with it. Other than them, I was seated with very welcoming people. No one made an issue of my status as a solo traveler - I don't think they cared one way or another. I did meet people through the roll call and made arrangements for specialty dining with them. I also went to the dining room often for breakfast. There was a regular group there that I often ate with and it became a regular thing. So, I had fixed breakfast and anytime dining. rkacruiser has given some great advice about striking up conversations in lounges and bars. It does work! Also, I did find that the staff went out of their way to make sure all was well with me. As for the OP, I did my first solo cruise on the Koningsdam and the Nieuw Statendam is almost identical. It will have additional choices for dining and the Grand Dutch Cafe is not to be missed! The Main Stage is spectacular, especially if they utilize it to its potential. Have a great cruise!
  18. Hereby my review of our 8-day cruise to Norway with Holland America's Nieuw Statendam. With lots of help from Cruise Critic members and by reading lots of post we decided a few months ago to go for a cruise to Norway, the 8 days (7 nights) Vikings Saga. Because it was our first cruise we decided to start and end in Amsterdam (capital of our home country) and just for a week to see cruising was something for us. If you have any question after reading this review please let me know! I have posted a selection of photos but if you want to see something, you’re missing please let me know. I also brought a lot of documentation from the ship like When and Where. Please like my post! If you liked it of course... Booking the cruise: We booked directly with HAL in the Netherlands. There was an offer with free Signature beverage package and 10% discount on excursion booked before a certain date. Al the Dutch travel agency who also offered this same trip (with the same benefits) were almost $ 150, - more expensive than HAL so for us the best deal was to book directly with HAL… Day 1: Embarkation day! Today, Sunday the 18th of August 2019 we finally started our cruise on the Statendam! We arrived early by train in Amsterdam Central station. We walked from the station to the terminal (PTA Amsterdam) in 15 minutes. Dropped of the baggage at the designated drop-off point. We entered the cue for checking in and our first thought was that the cue was long… But there where I think 12 or more desks where they checked in passengers. It was a 5-minute wait. After getting the first information about activities onboard (When and Where) and our personal spending card/room key we walked to the security check and after that entered to a waiting room where we received a card with a group number, in our case number 13. When we found a seat in the crowded waiting room, they called out group 10 and after I think 5 minutes our group was called to enter the ship! In the gangway they scanned our card an told us the rooms where ready. First, we went to our room to check it out and that explored the ship! At 0430PM we went to the Lido deck where we drank champagne and sail away from Amsterdam! Rest of the evening we walked on the outside deck to see the sail away trough the channel to the locks of Ijmuiden. We had dinner in the MDR. Day 2: At sea Like the first day we explored the ship even more. Due the fact it was a sea day we just relaxed a lot by the swimming pool, and I made some recordings with my GoPro around the ship. Nice spot we sit this day was in the Exploration café on deck 12. You need to be on time, most people stay here for a few hours, especially on the nice seats by the windows. Breakfast and Lunch in the Lido, diner in the MDR. Day 3: Fläm In Fläm we went out of bet early 05:30AM to go to the bow they opened for the scenic cruising in the Sognefjord and the last part to Fläm in the Aurlandsfjord. It’s was very nice to stand here and watch the beautiful Norwegian nature! 0700AM we docked in Fläm and went for breakfast to the Lido. In Fläm we did a hike to the Brekkefossen waterfall. It was hike from the boot to the starting point of the trail to the waterfall and back down, a little further into the valley, back to Fläm port and walk around the port a 14km hike for 4 hours. The hike is very nice but the trail from the rood up to the waterfall is with bad weather very slippery… For lunch (Lido) we went back to the ship and relaxed the rest of the day. Dinner in the Lido. Day 4: Stavanger Stavanger was a nice town to walk around, we first went to the street with the wooden houses (Gamle/Old Stavanger) that was across the street where the ship was docked. After that we walked to the Dom Church and the Breiavatnet lake behind the church. 5 hours walk, 14KM. For lunch we went back to the ship and grabbed a pizza at New York Deli! Great Pizza! Dinner in the MDR. Day 5: Kristiansand A lot of rain this day, we walked from the cruise terminal to the fish market and after that to the Dom Church of Kristiansand. We grabbed a cup of coffee and a donut a walked around the city to do some shopping. Due the bad weather my wife we went back to the ship to put on dry clothing and I walked around the Odderøya headland, beautiful nature reserve and in the meantime the weather had also improved so I could make some images with my GoPro. Walked for 4 hours,10KM. After I went back to the ship and put on dry clothing as well, we went for lunch to the Dive-In. Great burgers with chips!! Kristiansand is a very nice city but this day the weather wat to bad to explore everything we wanted to do. Day 6: Oslo Oslo! Nice weather and our last stop in Norway with this beautifully cruise! Oslo is a nice city with a beautifully harbor with new buildings in old style. Lots of old buildings in the city. They had on different places in the city live music. At the royal palace the members of the government arrived, don’t know them but it was fun to see, lots of armed guards and police. Again, we did some shopping and went to the Akershus fort. The ship was in front of the fort so had a nice opportunity to make some nice pictures of the ship. We went back on the ship and put on swim clothing and had lunch at the Lido outside pool. Walked in Oslo for 5 hours, 12KM. After lunch we went in the Jacuzzi and swimming pool and enjoyed the sunshine! We went for a shower ant went back out to be on time to grab a chair on deck 10 aft for the sail out from Oslo. Great views! Dinner in the Lido. Day 7: At sea Last full day on the Nieuw Statendam… I miss it already…. Went out early to make some shots with camera and GoPro without people on the background. Breakfast we had in the Lido. This day I had a Behind the Scenes tour If you can grab a place in the behind the scenes tour, I really would recommend it! It was very nice to see what’s going on below the passenger decks. They don’t advertise with it on our cruise, but I asked on the first day on the ship and it was planned for the last seaday. I was the 3rd on the list and they needed a minimum of 8 persons, maximum was 12. The duration was almost 3,5 hours and we went to the following departments: bridge, incident room, world stage, walked through the corridors where the crew sleeps (couldn’t see in the rooms), laundry, tailor shop, crew mess, recycling center, engine control room, storage rooms for the food (LOTS OF FOOD!) and the galley. After that we went with our cruise director who guided the tour back up to the Billboard on board to grab a drink and receive a goody bag form hall. Like is said, if you would like to see what’s happening behind the scenes, I really recommend it! It’s in this case worth the $ 150, - Day 8: Disembarkation day….. About our disembarkation, first disembark time was 0700AM and later we got an email with the announcement it changed to 0530AM. But thank god we didn’t have to get out that early! The Nieuw Statendam docked VCK Waterland Terminal at about 0530 AM and 0700AM they started disembarking passengers in groups. On day 2 in our cruise we got an envelope with disembarkation information and a form that we needed to fill in. There were a few options to choose from like a transfer to the City of Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport and Train Station Sloterdijk. We choose the last option because we needed to get on the train to our hometown. We could choose from 3 timeframes, 07:45/08:00, 08:15/08:30 and 08:45/09:00 am. We chose for the last one, so we had enough time onboard to get breakfast and relax a bit before leaving the ship. Breakfast time for our disembarkation day where from 06:00 till 09:00am in the Lido and in the MDR from 06:30 till 08:00am. They announced the group we were in (Black 3) at 09:05 and we went to the gangway and disembarked the ship for the last time…… In the hall on the dock our luggage was ready to pick up and we walked to the busses that drove us to the station. Everything was well organized by HAL! The Room: We had a Veranda room on deck 7, VE7186. What can I say? The room was small but big enough for a week for 2 persons and maybe for 2 adults and one minor. Not for 4 adults. The room is on the Shubert deck portside aft. It was a good choice in our case. We had no inconvenience from other guests or from the entertainment on board. The room has a good shower and in the shower is shampoo, conditioner and shower gel from Elemis. I liked it but as always tastes differ per person! On a next cruise I don’t take any shampoo or shower gel! My wife liked it to but preferred her own conditioner and shampoo for her curly hair. Our room steward was a nice guy cleaned our room twice a day and provided new towels. At night (second cleaning) he folded a nice towel animal every night. The safe is big enough for a 17inch laptop or tablet. The minibar is not included in the drink package! Read somewhere people asked the room steward to empty the minibar so that they can fill it themselves. What we did on some days is that we grabbed during the day beers or sprites and asked to not open it. We then put it in the minibar and drunk it when we wanted to sit on the balcony. But most of the time we where only on the room for sleeping. Food: The food was of a good quantity. We did not eat any paid restaurant like the Pinnacle Grill, we had the plans to do this but the food in the MDR was very good and Lido was for us extraordinarily good food for a buffet restaurant! Breakfast we did both in the Lido and MDR, if you want to start the day with not a lot noise and people around you go early to the MDR. I think a lot of food from the MDR and Lido are the same, especially in the morning. The only difference is that in the MDR they bring you the food! In the Lido at lunch time you can get Sushi at one of the stations, I asked if the also had it for dinner, but the answer was no…. Needed to come to the (paid) Shushi bar, I think it’s the same sushi so if you like sushi and don’t want the ambiance of a sushi bar take in as a lunch! Here a "few" food pics from MDR and Lido market. New York Deli Pizza we had an Pizza with tasted very good! Dive-in we eat both a burger with chips witch tasted very good! Tastes of course differ per person but people can’t say the food is bad!! And put on your plate what you can eat!!! If you don’t have enough go for a second or third time… I saw a lot of people putting their plates FULL and left the table with half a plate of food left….. During our behind the scenes tour they told us that food waste is a big problem which they try to prevent. I think some people are afraid that the food will run out soon? They walk around like headless chickens and if you are not careful, they will knock you over!! That’s what of the things I didn’t like of the Lido… (No, this is not me... 🙂 ) Drinks: For the drinks we had both the Signature Beverage Package. We booked before a certain date an got this for free. Would I book it on a future cruise? If I see what we drink in this week I say yes, but normally on a holiday we don’t drink so much if we did on this cruise… Must say that most of our holidays we book villa’s and need to drive to town to go for dinner or drinks and then I can’t drink! On a cruise ship its different... You can relax and grab a beer or cocktail and don’t need to think “can’t drink too much because I need to drive”. I made a calculation from our consumption (beer, wine, cocktails, sprites and special coffees) this one week cruise and we saved out $ 258,- dollars with the two of us with this SBP. We had an average of 5 alcoholic beverage per person per day and 6 non alcoholic drinks. For me most Mojito, beer water and Coca Cola, my wife drunk wine, prosecco, water, cappuccino, smoothies and some sprites. The terms of the SBP are not always that clear, in particular in the Netherlands. If you read the Dutch FAQ they say; A maximum of 15 beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) per day total with a maximum of $ 11,- (08/2019). The USA website FAQ says: A maximum of 15 alcoholic beverages a day and unlimited nonalcoholic beverages a day with a maximum of $ 11, - (08/2019). I got in touch with the Dutch customer service and they confirmed to me that the USA FAQ statement about the SBP is correct. Entertainment: World Stage: This is a great stage! 270-degree LED screens make it very nice to watch shows. On our cruise week we went to Iris Kroes, a Dutch singer/songwriter that’s playing on a harp, very good music especially because she sang a song in a language of our province (Frisian). And we went to an illusionist from the UK, Adam Heppenstall. Adam had some nice card tricks! Phenomenal. The last night we went to a combined show of Iris and Adam. This week the Postmodern Jukebox also preformed in the World Stage, we only listened to them during the show of Iris. Great band. B.B. Kings Blues Club and Lincoln stage center: B.B. King and Lincoln stage center is a combined stage, in daytime there is classical music where we have not been. At night the All Stars band played in the B.B. Kings Blues Club, this was our favorite band and music genre. We have been here all the nights the All Stars where playing. Billboard On Board: Nice music with the two guys on the Piano. Some nights they play numbers on request. Bin here a few times before/after dinner or a show in the World Stage. In the Billboard you can grab some snacks from a small buffet by the room. I think it opens 0600PM discovered by accident… They had just some cooked shrimps and meatballs, some toasted bread strips, egg salad and tomato with mozzarella. Nice before dinner snack with your beer or cocktail. Rolling Stone Rock Room: Good rock band but not our type of music. Bin here a few times before/after dinner or a show in the World Stage. Excursion: Due the fact we like to walk around our self, explore things and we find the prices of what HAL asks for excursions to high, we didn’t book anything with HAL, except the behind the scenes tour what only is possible to book with HAL. Talked with another passenger, he told me the TA he booked with advised him to NOT book excursions with HAL. Like the Flam railway he booked himself on the Saturday before embarkation. Till that day the train tickets were al sold out but that Saturday there were a lot of tickets available again (cruise lines give unsold tickets back to train company). He just paid $ 100, - for 2 persons (last minute price!) instead of $ 360, - with HAL, price difference of 260%!! But for that price difference you will get a waffle and coffee! 😊 Conclusion: Would I recommend HAL as a first-time cruiser? Yes, certainly! Perhaps there are cheaper cruise lines for the same voyages that provide this same good service, but I do not have that experience yet and I will investigate in the coming period. As said, this was our first cruise and certainly not the last!
  19. Enjoy. Did the Koningsdam inaugural crossing in 2016 (and again 2017), the Nieuw Statendam première crossing and Caribbean loop last year and are back again for this crossing. See you onboard. Scott and Scott (um yeah it's that)
  20. We’ve been to Amsterdam a couple of times and will be there by cruise ship 4 different times for a day each time next year by cruise ship. I’m looking for ideas. We’ve seen the things we want to see in town and will probably spend at least one day just wandering because that is so much fun there. Thinking of going to Keukenhof for the tulips on our early May stop (I know there may not be tulips then), going to Haarlam for the day on our mid May stop. Got another stop late May and one day plus part of another day in August. We board One day and overnight before sailing at 3pm the following day. Anyone done anything interesting in Amsterdam or surrounding areas?

  23. That's a pretty typical Baltic cruise route except adding Amsterdam and Oslo.
  24. We are new to HAL but not new to cruising. We will be on Nieuw Amsterdam for Christmas this year. I am traveling with my daughter and in all the years we've cruised, we have never had dinner in a specialty restaurant. After reading all of the great reviews of Tamarind and the Pinnacle Grill, I am tempted to try them since it will be a special week for us (Christmas and my daughter's 14th birthday). I believe she will be too old to count as a "kid" for kid pricing with the regular menu, but can anyone tell me if it's worth trying these two restaurants with a teenager that can be somewhat picky? She frequently orders off the kids menu, even in the MDR (at least she could do this with RCL), so the second part of my question is if she orders a off of the kids menu at Tamarind or Pinnacle Grill, will I be charged a kids price (even though she's not under 12) or will she still be charged as an adult? The website mentions that if kids under 12 order from the regular menus, they are half price and if they order from the kids menu, they are free. I know she will not be free because of her age but if she orders from the kids menu, do they make any kind of reduction? I don't mind paying the extra fee to eat in the specialty restaurants, but I would hate to pay $39/$25 for my daughter to eat chicken fingers 🙂 Thanks in advance!!
  25. Still enjoyed every day of our cruise, any day on a cruise ship, beats a day at the office. I must say, Captain and crew were fantastic, most certainly because of the challenges that weather threw at them, constantly adapting and making the most of other opportunities to dock elsewhere and also constant adapting the schedule for excursions, as well as program happening on board!
