  1. RCI web page still shows the July Jewel cruises from Amsterdam
  2. Both are very nice ships. I prefer the Nieuw Amsterdam primarily since I normally book Signature suites and those on the NA are much more affordable. Also, there are many more Neptunes on the NA, thus more likely to score and upsell offer.
  3. I’m a Koningsdam fan. Newer ship. Newer design. Large tiled showers in all staterooms. Better entertainment. Nieuw Amsterdam is a nice ship but I cruised Eurodam (twin sister) last year and was very disappointed how much they cut entertainment. For the ports, are you more the active type or the lazy guided tour type?
  4. A "few years" is defined as since 2002 in my opinion. Near the conclusion of the 2002 Maiden Asian Pacific Cruise of the Volendam, the Music Director informed us that the live multi-piece orchestra was "no more" in the future and would be replaced by "canned music". This was a significant change in what any of us had experienced on our past cruises. Canned music began; was replaced; other "offerings" were tried; live music--on a more reduced scale--was tried. Lots of different types of musical performers and types have been experienced over the years since 2002. The ones which I enjoyed--naturally--were the ones that "disappeared" on a future cruise. The highlight of the last years was the introduction of the group called Cantare who performed during the Nieuw Amsterdam's Dedication Program. I sailed on her that first season and I was blessed to hear them in person. Why all this disruption in the music/entertainment program on HAL ships in the past? This is my opinion and you may trash it as you wish. The Director of that part of the Company has been there for years and a close aide of his was the worst CD I have ever experienced on any cruise during my 2008 world cruise. What the guests prefer means little to nothing, in my opinion. Maybe with the reduction of staff that HAL has undergone, these two individuals have either retired, been furloughed, or chosen to find a different job.
  5. We were fortunate to have two cruises aboard the Amsterdam. The first was for two weeks in 2017 to Alaska. Earlier that year we spent 22 days aboard another HAL ship, which gave us an opportunity to “compare” our experiences on two almost identical ships. I had read many posters’ comments about the Amsterdam’s outstanding crew and, after these two cruises a few months apart, I was able to understand the Amsterdam’s favorable comparison. Our second cruise aboard the Amsterdam was the 2019 world cruise. Needless to say, that was a most memorable experience due to the ship, crew and itinerary. Unfortunately, our third planned cruise aboard the Amsterdam is not to be, since the ship has been sold.
  6. The question I get asked a lot is if there is a jail onboard the Dam ships. A jail on a ship is known as a brig, not to be confused with a sailing vessel with two square-rigged masts. Both the former "S" (Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam and Veendam) and the (partially) still current "R" class (Rotterdam, Zaandam, Volendam and Amsterdam) came out with a brig located on A-Deck forward adjacent the paint store. It is/was a one-person brig with a bed, that's it. The Vista-class and up did not have a brig and the ones on the "S" an "R"-class ships have been used for storage. As far as I know, the eight brigs were never used in that capacity. I sure never put anyone in there
  7. So what would this mean for our British Isles cruise on Jewel in July 2021 from Amsterdam???
  8. We were fortunate enough to cruise on Feb 2020 (aboard Nieuw Statendam) a few weeks before the cruise industry shut down. So that has helped with cruise withdrawal because we got to cruise this year. We planned our next cruise for 2021, even before the pandemic. As far as other vacations go, we took flew to Puerto Rico for a week long vacation in July. We stayed at a beach front condo on the west side of the island. We spent the week in relative isolation but it was absolutely blissful. We will be returning to Puerto Rico for another week over Thanksgiving with similar plans. Hope that’s enough to to hold me over until our next cruise!
  9. Summer 2021 Changes: announcing upcoming redeployments of six ships. ADVENTURE of the Seas, which was previously scheduled to sail from Copenhagen and Stockholm, will head for Barcelona to sail a mix of 4- and 5-night short Mediterranean itineraries to historic destinations like La Spezia and Rome, Italy; Ajaccio, Nice and Marseille, France; and Palma and Ibiza, Spain. Initially scheduled to sail from Miami, BRILLIANCE of the Seas will now homeport outside of Venice in Ravenna, Italy, offering 7-night roundtrip sailings that visit Greece, the Greek Isles and Croatia. JEWEL of the Seas, originally planned to homeport in Amsterdam and Barcelona, will now sail from Stockholm and Copenhagen on 7-night cruises calling on Northern Europe’s picturesque ports of Helsinki, Finland; Tallinn, Estonia; and Visby, Sweden. Originally set to sail from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., INDEPENDENCE of the Seas will make the neighboring city of Miami her home for the summer season. Sailing a combination of 6- and 8-night cruises to the Southern and Western Caribbean. VISION of the Seas¸ previously planned to sail from Barcelona, will sail from San Juan, Puerto Rico and offer 7-night Southern Caribbean itineraries to exotic destinations like Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis; St. Johns, Antigua; Castries, St. Lucia; and Bridgetown, Barbados. RHAPSODY of the Seas will move from the Mediterranean and further expand short Caribbean sailings with 4-, 5- and 7-night cruises from Tampa, Fla., visiting The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay and the Western Caribbean.
  10. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated August 28th, 2020 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 11. Rich.. Your Daily is my "Go to" read every morning, much appreciated. I especially like to follow the position of all the HAL ships each day, looking for the signal that they are actually moving toward the embarkation port for their next cruise. As soon as I see a ship two days out from the date and port, I'll start booking like crazy. I'm a single cruiser, and fully retired, so it is not a big deal if I book too late to make a specific cruise, as I can just go on the next available one, pretty much anytime. The exception to that would be for a unique itinerary such as the Pacific Battles Cruise on Maasdam last year. I would have hated to have missed that one. I'd also hate to miss the Africa Circumnavigation on Zaandam in October 2021. Other than those an a few others, most sailings can be duplicated with a later sailing if I miss out because of a sold out condition, and so the actual date doesn't much matter to me. With that in mind, this is what I am watching... First let me say that my posts are prone to errors.. I am old and don't proof read very well, and the data in the rest of my post may have errors, and may already be obsolete by the time I post it. The purpose of my post is just to show what I am watching. Again, as soon as I see a ship two days out from the port, that will be my signal to book cruises for the coming year. Another good signal would be when I hear that crews have returned to a specific ship. Is it likely that the crews will be flown to the embarkation port, or will the ships all sail to the crew's home countries to pick them up on the way to their next embarkation post? Here is the list from your opening post today, with what I think is the first sailing for the ships, again, most likely with errors.. I am not focused on accuracy with my additions, just an overall picture. It seems like at this point, a lot depends on Ft. Lauderdale opening up. I live fairly close to Ft. Lauderdale, and would like to be one of the first passengers on the first HAL ship out, but again, if I miss the first one, then next one out will be fine with me. It would be great that if anyone hears any news on crew movements, that they would add it too. 12. I don't know. I guess since the ship hasn't sailed yet(as far as I know) no one really knows if it feels crowded. I'll be glad when some reviews start being posted. I guess I can look at nieuw statendam. Same design.

  17. I would love to see them again -- I have not laid eyes on them since I saw them in their original location aboard the 1938 Nieuw Amsterdam when I visited that ship at Port Everglades with my grandmother -- at that time past passengers could visit the ship (with some sort of reservation on the part of their TA, I think...). I remember having tea onboard and thinking that THIS was what a ship should look like. 20. June 2013, we boarded Ryndam in Dover for a Norwegian cruise. The Boudicca was docked ahead of us. There was a strong gale blowing and I was concerned that the Ryndam would be a able to clear the breakfront. The Ryndam, with her bow thrusters and a tug assisting did well. The Boudicca was left behind to wait for less wind. She looked good, albeit small, even next to the 55,000 ton Ryndam which was 20 years newer. Who would have known that 7 years later, the Ryndam would be In Cyprus awaiting a buyer and the Boudicca would be replaced by the newer than Ryndam Rotterdam/Amsterdam?

  23. Where is Amsterdam at? Hint; not her regular berth in this city!
  24. My heart goes out to HAL folks still waiting for their luggage! I know the Amsterdam was supposed to deadhead to Fort Lauderdale but then plans went awry to say the least. We left our luggage on the QM2 and it was delivered to us a couple of weeks after the ship docked in Southampton at the end of April, so not so bad. There was a shipping fee but I'm SO GLAD we did not haul it home ourselves. We saw lots of folks changing planes at LAX with a ton of luggage. The fee is supposed to be refunded but honestly that would just be gravy right now if we got it. I also think the speakers on Cunard are great and didn't feel they were aimed at any nationality. We had the just retired Governor General of Australia as a speaker this past trip and he was great.
