  1. Hello all you knowledgeable people, we are considering scenic river cruise from Basel to Amsterdam. there is a big price difference from sept dates and October dates, and was wondering why this maybe? Weather related, river conditions etc. any thoughts please. btw we are actually on the scenic jasper next week from Budapest to Amsterdam, and have been keeping a keen eye on the river condition posts. thanks all, mark.
  2. Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam will be spending Labor Day in Juneau. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Typical Juneau weather is back for this week with mostly cloudy skies and a good chance of rain each day. The prediction for Monday is for overcast skies with some showers. High will only be 55F/13C and the low 51F/10C. Sunrise is at 5:59 am and sunset at 7:55 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be fo
  3. I have heard so much about the artwork throughout the Statendam. Is there some sort of self-guided tour available?
  4. Considering a future cruise on the Koningsdam but am concerned that it might “feel” more crowded as opposed to the slightly smaller NA. Sailed on the NA 1.5 years ago and did enjoy the cruise. Relaxing and never felt crowded. Sailed on several Celebrity ships and sometimes the ships felt VERY crowded. I know this is really a very subjective questions as feeling crowded can be a very personal thing. But any comments would be welcomed. Trying to decide to sail the K or just go back to the NA for a cruise. BTW, the time of the cruise would be wither October or December. And I would **thin
  5. Amsterdam will be at the AS dock from 0800-2200 and Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Disney Wonder at the AJ dock from 0600-1315 and Regatta at the FKL dock from 1200-2300. And yet another perfect day is forecast for Friday. The day will be sunny with a high of 72F/22C and a low of 48F/9C and a 0% chance of rain. Sunrise is at 5:52 am and sunset at 8:03 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam on Monday.
  6. Hereby my review of our 8-day cruise to Norway with Holland America's Nieuw Statendam. With lots of help from Cruise Critic members and by reading lots of post we decided a few months ago to go for a cruise to Norway, the 8 days (7 nights) Vikings Saga. Because it was our first cruise we decided to start and end in Amsterdam (capital of our home country) and just for a week to see cruising was something for us. If you have any question after reading this review please let me know! I have posted a selection of photos but if you want to see something, you’re missing please let me know. I also
  7. Just called Holland America to take advantage of an upgrade special for an obstructed veranda and was assigned a handicapped obstructed veranda. When I saw the cabin on the deck plan, I explained I didn't need a handicap room and feared I was keeping it from someone who really needed one. The agent told me for that very reason they usually don't assign these cabins to non-handicapped passengers until it is within 30 days of the cruise, which it is. The cabin, 4096 on Nieuw Statendam, is naturally larger and also looks to have a larger balcony than other veranda cabins and I fee
  8. The thing about this cruise – don’t go to a charity auction, don’t drink that last glass of cheap chardonnay and don’t sit in the front. Do that and you will end up on an Alaska cruise that is no bargain! Well, that is exactly what I did and that’s how we found ourselves on the Nieuw Amsterdam August 17-23 round trip cruise from Vancouver. Our long-suffering and exemplary TA helped me book our cabin, 8125 – Navigator Deck, aft (ish) category VE. (More about the cabin later) and as a side note because this was a “gift certificate” booking she did not get her usual commission. Cheap shot Hollan
  9. Does anyone have any photos or information about the inside accessible cabins on Nieuw statendam (or Koningsdam since they are the same class of ship) many thanks
  10. The usual cast of characters will be in Juneau on Monday. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Monday is forecast to be the worst of the week with rain chances lowering and temperatures rising as the week progresses. Monday has a 100% chance of rain and a high of 57F/14C and a low of 48F/9C. Sunrise is at 5:44am and sunset at 8:14 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.ju
  11. That was the question I asked myself as we boarded in Seattle - the flagship of the fleet, the World Cruise ship, the newly-refurbished almost 20-year old... And I was even more confused at muster drill when I saw a familiar tall figure on the deck with us. I thought my eyes were deceiving me, but later on our CD, Bruce, mentioned the opportunity to book a cruise with our Future Cruise Consultant, Sheryll, and I knew I had seen our (multiple) Prinsendam master, Captain Jeroen Schuchmann. (He was on board as a passenger, prior to going for training for the Amsterdam captaincy.)

  13. Hi there, We are a couple from Montreal, Canada and leaving on the Niew Amsterdam on April 4, 2020 to April 28, 2020 from Fort Lauderdale and are looking for fellow cruisers that are doing the same cruise to share experiences and information and maybe even meet on the ship. Are you one of us????
  14. I have just booked my first river cruise with Avalon - Tulip Time May 6, 2020 saling from Amsterdam. I am looking for hotel recommendations that are near the dock or close by as I will be arriving the day before the cruise starts. I tried to find out which dock in Amsterdam we would be sailing from; however, that information is not yet available. Thank you.
  15. Our cruise had a port stop in Rotterdam. We have booked a NCL bus from Rotterdam to Amsterdam. It only says that the drop off/ pick up will be at a central location in Amsterdam. Does anyone know where that location may be? I've called the excursion help line and they couldn't tell me anything. I have done a search both here and on the port of call board and didn't find anything. Thanks
  16. Amsterdam is currently being inspected. No word yet on the score.
  17. Looking into either AmaWaterways or Uniworld river cruise. Want to spend extra time in Amsterdam. Suggestions on how many days are sufficient?
  18. Any suggestions? Will be on a 7 night cruise. It's possible our 1 year old will be with us although I may be able to get babysitting from other family members on one or two nights when we try specialty dining. I've never sailed with HAL before. I watched some videos online and think I want to try the Asian place (Tamarind) and Pinnacle Grill. Not sure about the Italian place as I see it gets mixed reviews. Will we get dirty looks if we bring our kid with us? Any other complimentary food items specific to HAL that I should make sure I try/don't miss out on? The b
  19. Just wondering if anyone has stayed in this cabin or one like it. It has the angled balcony which looks like it might be slightly larger than some and the cabin looks a little bit longer. Trying to decide between this and one in the same V category with the obviously larger balcony. Not sure if there's much difference in cabin size, and if not, would rather have the larger balcony on the other one. Thanks!
  20. We will be in Amsterdam October 21-24 after a river cruise. I am prebooking the Anne Frank House and museums. Is it really necessary to prebook the Ice Bar and Heineken Experience? I would prefer to do these at our leisure rather than having to make a specific time. Any advice is appreciated.
  21. We had a wonderful Northern Isles Cruise on the Nieuw Statendam!!! Pre-cruise - We flew United from Pittsburgh to DC and then DC to Amsterdam. We purchased our airfare through HAL and saved almost 50% to what we found on line. Other than a long layover in DC, which we spent in a United lounge, the flights weren’t bad and we arrived in Amsterdam on Friday morning for a Sunday cruise. We stayed at the Kimpton, which we would highly recommend. It is a short (5 minute) walk from the Centraal station (took the train from the airport) and has nightly free wine happy hours.
  22. Does anyone know who the Officers are on the Amsterdam sailing starting September 23.
  23. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Monday is looking to be the nicest day of the week with a 0% chance of rain and a high of 63F/17C but a chilly low of 44F/7C. Sunrise is at 5:28 am and sunset at 8:33 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  24. My d/w and I will be finishing a transatlantic and Norway fiord cruise aboard the Niew Statendam in Early May 2020 and am having a hard time with post cruise hotel in Amsterdam. Will probably stay in the city 3 days or so. Can anyone recommend a hotel central location that doesn’t break the bank?
  25. Hi. We recently did a 7 night Danube cruise on Crystal Mozart and had a great time. We are contemplating to do an another Crystal river cruise, perhaps in 2021. We think we would like to cruise on the Rhine next, probably in the fall (before the Christmas Market prices kick in). We are thinking about the 7 night Amsterdam to Basel, or the reverse. It appears the ports of calls are identical whether it is southbound or northbound. Has any of you done one or both of these cruises on the Rhine? Is there a not-so-obvious pros/cons of the southbound vs. northbound? Our initial thought is t
