  1. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated October 11th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 2. I will be sailing on the Nieuw Statendam in December flying out of LAX to FLL and wanted to do it up right so to speak. I am wondering if anyone here has ever used the Private Suites at LAX. Its a huge splurge and I have been given a large discount. Going into LAX is always a hassle and I try avoiding it at all costs and this seems like a great way to do that. https://theprivatesuite.com/the-experience/ Thanks in advance.
  3. Is anyone familiar with this suite? It's one of the last available and we weren't sure about it's aft location. The concern is noise from above or below, ease of getting on/off for excursions. Thanks!
  4. Question: So HAL is not changing the Pinnacle breakfast on the Nieuw Amsterdam? Good to hear! Love the Pinnacle. We eat there every night.
  5. Yes, that's the same menu we had last April on Oosterdam and last Christmas on Nieuw Statendam. I can recall the previous menu with fried chicken, mashed potatoes and spinach. OMG, was it lusciously delicious. I loved it and was so disappointed when it was removed. On the last cruise, my friends and I were in a hurry, so we all ordered the steak sandwich. Unfortunately, it had MSG in it, and I'm allergic, so I spent the next two hours in the bathroom. So much for the activities we'd planned for that afternoon before the Muster. I won't ever order it again. Yes, the MDR confirmed my allergies when we checked in with the maître d', and I asked about the MSG before ordering. Not a great way to start a cruise, but maître d' and others expressed apologies, and the staff took good care of me for the rest of the cruise. How long has this menu been in effect? At what point will they change it? We're on NS again this Christmas and wonder if we'll see a different menu or not.
  6. Loving this thread, I read all 40 pages of comments 🙂 Anyway, just to add a vote for Avalon, I did their Amsterdam to Basel cruise and loved every second. All the excursions were fantastic, all the meals were what you'd expect in a 4 star restaurant.
  7. HAL has sailed variations of that route for many years. Sete is pretty new, but the other ports are very common...we did many of them in 2010 on Noordam. We are booked on Nieuw Amsterdam about a month after you for 24 days, eastern Med. We have sailed on her twice before...we like her. Do you have specific questions? For port activities, your excursions should be available...what interests you? Check the Ports boards...many can be done on your own, or with private vendors for better experiences.
  8. Hi, how is sailing on HAL solo? Male 64 yrs. Going on Nieuw Statendam.
  9. 75 days till we head to FLL, then on the 5th we board the Nieuw Statendam for a 14 day Tropical Caribbean itinerary. You? Smooth Sailing! 🙂🙂🙂
  10. Crystal Symphony New Orleans to Miami, Caribbean Flavors Two full weeks on the glorious Crystal Symphony with an overnight in the Big Easy and lots of other great ports With 6 of those fantastic Crystal Sea Days it’s a very tough one to beat: Oct 25 (OCS191025-14) New Orleans to Fort Lauderdale - May B (Muriel/Phil) Crystal Debussy Basel to Amsterdam, Legendary Rhine I certainly feel like this is a great time for a river cruise on the Rhine as I am doing the same thing in reverse almost simultaneously. You should be passing the Bach somewhere near Cologne. If you happen to see us pass me a wave: Oct 26 RDB191026-07 Basel to Amsterdam Pep65 (Frank/Laura) It’s just these 2 parties on Future Bookings but the Symphony has a 7-page roll call indicating quite a few others, including a Crystal Favorite Character Man. If the new show “Two Guys and a Grand” happens by no means should you miss it. Bon Voyage to all. Have a wonderful cruise!. Roy
  11. We like 'em all!! In the winter, we cruise for 3-4 weeks to get away from the cold. For those cruises, we prefer the larger ships. We loved our cruises on the Oasis class ships. We pick & choose what activities/entertainment we attend, spend a lot of time on our balconies, don't really care about the ports, as long as the weather is HOT HOT HOT. Our main consideration for this type of cruise is $$$. Our next cruise on a big ship is on the Nieuw Statendam (big for HAL, that is, not necessarily Royal or Princess or Carnival!). We're curious to see how HAL handles a big ship, and hopefully there will be a younger demographic. For the Caribbean, we like the overall vibe that a good mix of ages provides. When we cruise to explore, as we usually do once or twice a year, we prefer the smaller ships. As mentioned several times, they can get into some very interesting & wonderful ports around the world that the larger ships simply cannot. Itinerary is our most important consideration for these cruises, then size, then $$$. Next fall we'll be on Serenade of the Seas in Australia & New Zealand.
  12. We recently went France to visit friends and then on to Amsterdam to join a 21 day cruise on Nieuw Staatandam for a cruise thru Baltic and Norway. I recently was forced to acquire a scooter or electric wheel chair for traveling more than about 50 yards. This was first for us. We got off to a horrendous start when confusion at Singapore airlines meant my own folding scooter didn't travel with us!!. It was a bad start but we were determined to make the best of it. My friends were in France were able to find a company which would hire me one while I stayed with them. I contacted my booking agent at HAL Seattle and she sent me the names off 2 companies who could provide a scooter to the ship. I checked both websites and found that one of them had a scooter which would be suitable for me. Feeling a little cheeky I called Scootaround and was soon talking to someone in Winnipeg Canada. . I asked if it was possible to hire a scooter to be delivered to the ship in five days time and she said which one would you like and sent me the forms by email. One more phone call and it was paid for and when I boarded the ship it was waiting in my stateroom.I thought that was excellent service and it saved my cruise from being a disaster. I would not have been able to leave the ship without it. I have no hesitation in recommending the Scootarounds services. Before leaving home we had searched many websites looking for information about shore excisions. I found cruise critic to be very helpful. Many people recommended tours but they didn't want to take scooters or wheeled walkers. I found a thread from a fellow cruise critic mentioning they were able to book with T J travel so I searched their site and contacted them.Their office staff were extremely helpful and answered all my questions and yes they would be able to help us by accommodating my scooter We booked for st. Petersburg on their relaxed tour. We waited a few days for confirmation as they needed six people to go. By combining with someone off the Queen Victoria (to be moored alongside) were set to go. As they were so helpful we booked tours for Berlin and Helsinki as well. We cannot recommend their tours more highly. On our 2 day St Petersburg tour we saw so much more than we ever imagined. Our guide Alexis and driver Yuri gave us a wonderful experience. Yuri just picked up my scooter and loaded it into the bus effortlessly. He always found the closest drop off points to where ever we went and then magically appeared when we exited. We never had to queue and seamlessly went from one venue to another, Alexis displayed a great knowledge and love of her city and passed it on to us all. We saw all the sights including the Heritage, Peterhof gardens and fountains, Church of the spilled blood and even had a canal boat ride around the city. Despite what I had read earlier about scooters and wheelchairs not being allowed in Hermitage or Catherine's Palace and amber room, we were able to go everywhere. T.J. Travel also arranged all our visas and emailed them to us before we left home. For a small group tour at half the price of what ship was offering go with TJ Tours Comfort tour. Because we had booked SPB tour we were given a discount on the Baltic tours. We choose to go to Berlin from Warnamande and then Helsinki. When the train took ships booked passengers in an non air conditioned train to Berlin we speed along in a air con coach on a 36C. day.Our tour guides both on Berlin & Helsinki demonstrated a great knowledge and love of their respective cities and in both places we covered many sights. The drivers made us feel safe at all times and always managed to drop us off close to sights and magically reappear to pick us up when we had finished. We cannot recommend T.J. tours enough. It was a dream of mine to return to St Petersburg again after 42 years. TJ Tours allowed me to successfully do so and enjoy every minute of it, scooter and all.
  13. Just checking about drinking water available on the NA. Is there a place on board that has water for filling water bottles other than the tap in the nearest sink?
  14. We booked a similar itinerary that is the repo for RCI Sept 2,2020 that instead of Ireland starts in Amsterdam, goes to Norwegian fjords for two stops, then hits up Reykjavik and akureyri, and then Nuuk, Qaqortoq, and Prince Christiansen Sound. It sold out completely in 4 months. You cannot even be waitlisted and it was pulled from their website. Supply and demand. Greenland is not a common stop for X and RCI and with the new polar code taking full effect in 2021 will likely never be a stop for them again. We debated changing to the summit sailing but really liked the Norway stops instead Canada plus the extra stop in Greenland.
  15. We've sailed twice on the Nieuw Amsterdam, most recently in February 2019, and on the Eclipse 3 times, most recently in March 2018. In each case, we've been very happy with the ship and would embark again on either one without hesitation. The Eclipse, whose maiden voyage was in April 2010, holds 2850 passengers. The slightly smaller Nieuw Amsterdam, which holds 2106 passengers, had her maiden voyage three months later. Based on our latest sailings, both are in excellent condition. There are far too many potential points of comparison to try to go through, and many are pretty subjective. For example, the Nieuw Amsterdam doesn't have the larger production shows like Topper, but does have things like the B.B. King Blues Club. The Eclipse has its lawn, but the Nieuw Amsterdam has a full promenade deck. Given identical itineraries, pricing, cabins, etc., I'd be very hard pressed to make a choice between the two. It would probably come down to something as minor as Café al Bacio versus the Explorations Café. The former used to be my favourite coffee shop on land or at sea, but the crowding is destroying it. The Explorations Café and the wonderful views from the Crows Nest make it hard to beat. All in all, my nod might go to the Nieuw Amsterdam, yet my next two bookings are on the Eclipse and the Equinox.
  16. The Nieuw Statendam is such a beautiful, new cruise ship, and I took a ton of photos when I was on board. If you're planning to sail on this ship in the future and want a sneak peak, I've got a photo tour featuring my verandah cabin and all the public spaces on the ship! If you're missing the ship or counting down the days until your next cruise (aren't we all!), maybe this will help fuel your wanderlust for cruising and bring back some great memories! You can see my entire cruise ship photo tour here >> https://justinpluslauren.com/nieuw-statendam-cruise-ship-photo-tour/ Here are a few photos from the Nieuw Statendam! And feel free to ask me any questions!
  17. My family will be going on a 14 day cruise back to back on the Nieuw Statendam. What is the procedure of the back to back cruise? Will my family be required to get off the ship and wait in the cruise terminal as the initial embarkation?? Your feedback is much appreciated. Leeson112
  18. I'm curious about the Microsoft courses being offered on the Nieuw Statendam. Is it necessary, advisable, or even possible to book the classes in advance? Is there a schedule for the specific classes? Any feedback re other cruisers' experience with this would be much appreciated.
  19. Another thank you for posting this. I just went on and saved $220 on my flight to Amsterdam and back!
  20. You're sailing on the newest ship in the HAL fleet, Nieuw Statendam, a real beauty. No, the ship will NOT shut down at 10:30 P.M., as Music Walk musicians are still performing. Since Rolling Stones Rock Room and Billboard Onboard are across from each other, these musicians play a set in one lounge, and the minute that show is over (45 minute sets) the other musicians across the deck begin their show. BB King's Blues Club plays in the section behind these two venues. Their shows have sets that stagger these other two shows. Lincoln Center Stage plays before and during the dinner hours. On Nieuw Statendam, these very talented classical musicians rarely played after 8 P.M. A DJ takes over in the Queen's Lounge (Lincoln Center Stage and BB King's venue) after BB King's last set. My son, who is 33 and single, rarely came back to our cabin until 1-1:30 a.m., so if you want nightlife, you can find it aboard this ship. My only complaint with NS is its narrow Promenade Deck. Please don't miss New York Deli (Reuben sandwich with extra meat) or Dutch Café, which has free food selections. The quiche is marvelous. Although Gelato sells ice cream, you can get free ice cream at the Lido Marketplace with limited flavors. Gelato has exotic flavors for a reasonable price and generous servings. Dive In serves marvelous burgers and hotdogs. Only time during the year I'll eat a hotdog is aboard ship. Yum! At night, the huge screen by the Lido main pool shows recently released DVD movies which are also available on your TV the next day. Your TV will also have an inventory of movies, all free. NY Deli serves popcorn, pizza, soft pretzels, and chicken wings during the movies. All free. We first sailed on NS last Christmas and will sail her again this Christmas/New Year's. Obviously, we loved the experience. I think you will too. Come back and let us know about your experience and impressions. Have a fabulous cruise.
  21. Less than a week to go before my mom and I embark on our second Tauck River Cruise - Amsterdam to Budapest. This time we are on the ship for 14 days! We LOVED the Versailles, Paris, Seine and London one we did last year on Tauck, but preferred the ship food and staff over the land amenities. I have been SO busy at work that I really haven’t had time to pack or prep for this cruise. Doing that today. We are doing a pre-stay night in Amsterdam, which is a perk given free to past Tauck travelers. NICE! I was able to score tickets to the Anne Frank House, so we will be seeing that and doing the hop-on hop-off canal tour the day before the cruise starts. I can’t wait for that awesome Tauck pampering! 🤗🤗 I will I’ll be posting here LIVE daily. Feel free to ask questions as we go. Mom flies in Thursday and we fly out Friday morning at 10:30 LA time. We booked our flights through Tauck because they were MUCH cheaper! We have a layover in San Fran then non-stop to Amsterdam. Not bad. I try to sleep on the long leg out so I’m not exhausted when I get there. Worked well last year so.. crossing fingers! Time me to Pack! Hope you enjoy following along.
  22. Haven’t been in HAL in many years and I’m looking to try again and would appreciate any feedback. Our one and only HAL cruise was 9 years ago on the Maasdam. 14 days with the most amazing Caribbean itinerary. But we were bored on the ship. Best entertainment was the crew show. We really enjoyed that. Rest of the entertainment was a xylophone player and a violinist. Not our cup of tea. We've mostly sailed Princess, but it seems that with the new ships, the ship is the destination, Not the itinerary. Don’t get me wrong, the ship is very important, as is the itinerary. Quite frankly we’re getting bored with Princess’ same Caribbean ports and we’re looking for a change. Last few cruises we didn’t bother to get off the ship. Now to my question, 2 ships, same itinerary. If you had to choose between the Nieuw Amsterdam and the Nieuw Statendam, which would you choose and why? We are in out early 70’s and fairly active. We only want to compare the ships, not the ports as we’ve been to them before, just not on the same cruise. The ports offered are the relaxing beach ports. Just what we need right now. Thanks in advance.

  24. Has anyone stayed in this cabin? Looks like a larger obstructive balcony with some ocean view.
