  1. Captain Albert was on our transatlantic on the Nieuw Statendam last December. He gave several talks in the World Stage that were extremely interesting and very informative. He is a great speaker. They were standing room only.
  2. Hi, Where is the afternoon tea held? Is it in the dining room or a lounge? I am booked on the Nieuw Statendam for February 2020, but I have not cruised with Holland America recently. Thanks, Chuck
  3. I've sailed on NIEUW STATENDAM, the newer sister ship of KONINGSDAM. I quite enjoyed the ship but regarding the promenade deck, yes it exists but it's just a narrow walkway behind the lifeboats with no view. There are a couple spots with open views but not many. It's not a traditional promenade deck with seating like on the other Cunard ships. More of just a walkway.
  4. Oops, I just noticed something with my current string of cruises. Crystal Bach changed itineraries on me twice and it is now a 7-night Romantic Rhine (Amsterdam to Baisel) and leaves October 27, not October 25. Sorry about that. Roy
  5. Great photo's. My wife and I are going on the Nieuw Statendam in April. We've never been on Holland before and are really looking forward to it. It's a great opportunity for me to check out a new cruise line so I can promote it to my clients. Your photos just go me really excited.

  7. We are going to be in Amsterdam on 5/3/20 and we are interested in going to Keukenhof to see the tulips. My daughter is a fulltime wheelchair user but there are family members to assist. Any recommendations on the best way to get there from the ship? Thanks!!

  9. For our next cruise, I am looking at midship balconies on the Nieuw Statendam. I have found that my motion sickness is mitigated by having the foot of the bed nearest to the ship's bow so that when I sit up in bed I am facing forward. Is there any way to determine the bed placement in specific staterooms?
  10. Yes, that's true (K'dm movies not being that loud)--except if we wanted be by the pool to either eat or hang out in that lovely space (really gorgeous at night--should be soothing and calm), we had to be exposed to it. I unwillingly saw much of a shoot-em-up one evening, lol. But I think just knowing what to expect makes a "new ship" cruise much better. I know that they tweak ships as they roll out and see what works; we were thrilled that the Sel de Mer was an actual, permanent restaurant on that ship, instead of a pop up--ooh lala, the food! Too bad it's apparently been limited to once a cruise. And the now discontinued temporary restaurant (something Central?) in the America's Test Kitchen space was EXCELLENT. We ate there 3 times. Plus the happy and excited staff and the energy (great music!) were just fantastic. A shame that quickly has gone by the wayside--it was always packed. But hurray for the new Rolling Stone venue! We've loved BB King's but not for every single night, lol. What was that great 7-8 course dinner they offered for awhile in the Pinnacle? Not the Le Cirque--De Librije! I hope that will be offered again on the Nieuw Statendam in Dec--anyone know if it's just certain nights? They didn't have it on the P-dam in June. As a 4-star Mariner, I heartily agree with what's been said in the many posts above, all the wonderful aspects of HAL. We do prefer smaller ships and greatly mourn the loss of the Prinsendam... (The Dutch tradition fading away has been recouped a bit in my mind with the new Dutch Cafe; that's where all the officers seem to eat, lol. But we still have our traditional hats they used to hand out at dinner on Dutch night!)
  11. We used to cruise them a good bit, but stopped after they instituted MUTS and it was virtually impossible to escape the horrendous noise of car crashes, explosions, yelling on the big screens. Couldn't stay out on much of the deck, esp. by the pools; maybe it's been corrected in intervening years but we've no interest in finding out. Celebrity confines its movie screens to a nice high aft deck--actually a good place to watch football, lol. Unfortunately on the Koningsdam we discovered that they also show movies by the pool now, so good luck if you just want to sit and have a pizza, without whatever movie is blaring at the moment. Bracing ourselves for the same on the Nieuw Statendam in Dec., but forewarned is forearmed; I have an excellent pair of earplugs!
  12. Shuttle buses ran from around 8:00AM into Amsterdam and the last back was around 10:00PM on the first day. It dropped off at the central station and was okay. We only had a short wait each way. The second day had an all aboard time of 2:30PM so unless you were on a trip or just wanted two hours max in Amsterdam it really wasn’t worth the bother. In fact we had a leisurely breakfast, spent an hour in the aft hot tub then went for a walk along the sea wall to the beach. The reply above covers what else to do. We may have gone for a walk into the dunes if we knew they were accessible.. So if you have a similar itinerary then I’d go for a full day in Amsterdam and unless on a booked tour stay near IJmuiden and relax.
  13. Does anyone know if there are charging USB ports in the nightstands on the Nieuw Amsterdam? I thought I saw this somewhere but not I'm having a hard time using the search function within the boards. Thanks!
  14. We absolutely loved the British Isles ports on our Princess Cruise last year. So much to see, we would actually love to do this cruise again soon. Like you, We also loved Baltic, have done this twice. In my opinion I would do BI next, then another Baltic. I have not sailed Celebrity so can’t compare. Last year the Celebrity BI cruises left from Amsterdam and the Princess cruises left from Southampton, and we wanted to spend our pre cruise vacation in London, so decision made. I choose my cruises based primarily on itinerary and I thought Princess had a fabulous itinerary. One of my good friends just did a BI cruise in August on Celebrity and their cruise didn’t include a port for Edinburgh, for us that would definitely have been a deal killer! if you could provide the list of ports each of the two cruises you are considering I’d be happy to comment.
  15. My wife and I sailed on the August 31 Nieuw Amsterdam Alaska cruise, roundtrip from Vancouver with visits to Tracy Arm Inlet/Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, and Ketchikan. I'm not writing a full review, but I wanted to share some notes and impressions from the cruise. This was not our first Alaska cruise. My wife and I took one on Princess in 2002, and I did two previous Alaska cruises in the 90's, one on Celebrity and the other on RCCL. I've been on many cruises but only once on HAL, and that was almost 25 years ago. It was the first time on HAL for my wife. EMBARKATION We took a taxi to Canada Place from our hotel, arriving around 11:00. The taxi waited in a long line in the parking garage to drop us off -- we should have left the taxi outside and walked. Embarkation was very quick and organized, with lots of staff directing people. We were able to board and go to our stateroom immediately after checking in and clearing Customs, so we were in our room before noon. The MDR was open for lunch from 12:00-1:30, so we ate there. Our luggage was delivered to our cabin around 2:00. CABIN We were in an aft-facing verandah cabin, #5191. The cabin was nice, with plenty of storage, a decent size bathroom with a tub/shower and handheld showerhead. Some of the space for hanging items was short, but I discovered you could fold the shelves up to make more space. Our cabin steward Jalu ("Lu") was very good. The balcony had two chairs with separate foot rests and a small table. The TV didn't appear to work correctly at first, but that's because you have to watch the entire safety presentation (just a few minutes) before you can access the menu. There was a limited selection of live TV, but we only watched the news once in a while to keep tabs on Hurricane Dorian (we live in FL). DINING Prior to the cruise, I made reservations in three of the specialty restaurants, Canaletto (first night), Pinnacle Grill (mid week), and Tamarind (last night). Once on board, we decided to try Tamarind on the second night. We had our other dinners and lunches in the MDR. Pinnacle and Tamarind were very good (Tamarind was better the first time), Canaletto was good but not great, and the MDR was pretty good. On Gala Nights people were not as dressed up as I've seen on other cruises. We had breakfast delivered to room each morning (including the last morning, which most cruise lines don't do). There's a limited selection of hot and cold items. A couple of mornings the order wasn't quite right, and a couple of times breakfast came either early or late, but overall it was fine. As with every other cruise line I've been on, there's an order tag you can hang outside your door before you go to bed. ENTERTAINMENT By far the best entertainment was the band at B.B. King's Blues Club, and we enjoyed that almost every night. We sat at the bar and got to know the bartenders (Jeffrey, Alan, and Luis). One night we listened to the dual piano players. They were good, and drew big crowds, but they didn't really play off each other like we've seen at other dueling piano shows. We were planning to listen to them a second time, but there were no seats available so went to B.B. King's instead. The only Mainstage shows we saw were the illusionist Leon Etienne and comedian Lamont Ferguson (two different shows). They were both good (the illusionist was better). My wife "volunteered" at Leon's show. They did a combined show the last night but we didn't go. Unlike some other ships we've been on, you didn't really have to get to the theater too early -- there were plenty of open seats up front even when the shows started. Bar service in the theater was more limited than what we've experienced elsewhere, and non-existent once the show started. The Orange Party was held at B.B. King's one night. Most people did not wear orange. The only differences between that night and other nights at the club were that the cruise director and some other crew members were dancing, the bartenders were wearing orange hats, and they were serving snacks. INTERNET AND WIFI I purchased the Premium Internet package before the cruise, which you can use on multiple devices but only one at a time. The service was pretty slow and unreliable, definitely not worth the money. I also signed up for AT&T's 30-day Cruise Plan, which gave me 50 minutes of voice and unlimited text on the ship's cellular (no data). They have a more expensive plan that provides some data and unlimited voice. One of the reasons I did this is because we spent a few days in Vancouver before the cruise, and I could use the Cruise Plan there (Canada is not included in my home wireless area). The HAL Navigator mobile app was useful. You don't need to buy an internet plan to connect to the ship's WiFi, and you can view the schedule of events, restaurant menus. and make dinner reservations (for specialty restaurants). You can also send messages other people who have the app (I didn't try that). If you do buy an internet plan, you can use the app to connect. I use NordVPN whenever I'm on a public WiFi network, and I limited success getting it to work with the ship's internet. The Navigator app doesn't work correctly when you're connected to a VPN. SHORE EXCURSIONS AND PORTS The only shore excursion I purchased from HAL (before the cruise) was the Tracy Arm Inlet tour. The ship passes through Tracy Arm Inlet on the way to Juneau, so you board the tour boat directly from the ship in the morning, and then board the ship directly from the tour boat that afternoon in Juneau. Overall we enjoyed the tour and are glad we did it, though it was expensive. We were supposed to meet at 8:15 in the theater and leave at 8:30 -- we didn't actually start leaving the ship until 9:15 (we could have used the extra sleep :-). We did two other excursions with local operations in Skagway and Juneau. Skagway and Juneau have become incredibly touristy since our last visit, with many blocks of nothing but jewelry stores and other typical tourist traps. Ketchikan had a bit more character, and the tourism was more integrated and not as in your face as the other ports. Glacier Bay was awesome. We spent quite a bit of time there, and they brought a naturalist on board to narrate. DISEMBARKATION We chose one of the early disembarkation groups (but not self-disembarkation) that was supposed to disembark around 8:30. Our flight from Vancouver was at around 12:30. We heard our group called a few minutes after 8:00, but we weren't quite ready to leave. When we arrived at the disembarkation point on the ship at around 8:20, we were told we were mistaken, and our group hadn't been called yet (other passengers verified that they also heard our group being called). Once they called our group (again), we got off the ship, claimed our bags, and cleared customs pretty quickly. There was no wait for taxi, and the ride to the airport was uneventful. The lines at the airport were short, and we were at our gate an hour or less after we disembarked. There was only one other ship disembarking, the Golden Princess, so that's probably why it went quickly. CONCLUSION We were happy overall with HAL and the cruise, and we definitely try HAL again. We did both get sick (colds or flu) a few days into the cruise, but this didn't appear to be a widespread problem, and we were still able to enjoy our trip.
  16. I understand that this is a "pop up" experience. But, where does it pop up? For those who have done this (and I know this is very subjective), is it work the $49 charge?
  17. HOLLAND AMERICA BOARD'S FUTURE CRUISE LISTING Updated September 20th, 2019 We all love to hear what cruises you are booked on. I post the Bon Voyage threads 7 days before sailing so, to be included in this, you need to post your details here to allow sufficient time to be on the updated Future Cruise Listing. It’s better to post earlier than later but if it is later please post THREE weeks in advance to make sure it doesn’t get missed. We would also be interested to know if this is your first cruise, your first HAL cruise or if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Details needed are in the 2nd post of this thread. Please use REPLY and not QUOTE when posting to this thread. Using 'Quote' makes a very long thread and difficult for others to read. While this list is a lot of fun, please don't mistake it for a Roll Call thread. You can go to the Roll Call Section here on Cruise Critic and find your cruise to sign up there too. That's where your Meet & Greet planning, tour sharing, and other activities specific to your cruise will be happening. This week’s additions and changes are in BOLD and highlighted in aqua (sea colours). 18. My last 2 cruises were on the twin sisters of those 2 ships. Based on those experiences, I recommend Nieuw Statendam. Entertainment is better, and I loved the huge walk in shower on Koningsdam. Plus, they destroyed what used to be a nice coffee stand with pastries in the Crows Nest on the Signature Class ships. Nieuw Statendam has the Dutch Café. I disembarked Koningsdam with the opinion I'd do it again. I disembarked Eurodam very disappointed with HAL.
  19. We will be in Amsterdam in October. I have booked cruise excursions but none of them go to the Reijkmuseum. How far is the museum from the pier? Maybe we can buy tickets for when we have "free time". Sally PS: Can you reply to my email since sometimes I can't find where the answers to my questions are? sisally@si.rr.com. Thanks
  20. We are on the Nieuw Statendam also in November (Nov 17 to Dec 1). The Premium Internet plan now offered on the HAL website as an Indulgence appears to be real good price. I seem to recall someone mentioning on CC that the cost of the Premium plan, if purchased ahead, is the same as waiting and buying the Surf plan on board. The $30 discount is applicable on either on when you board the ship. Is this really the case?
  21. This is the last full week of ships in Juneau although there will be no HAL ship on Wednesday. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port is Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215. There is a 100% chance of rain with a high of 55F/13C and a low of 43F/6C. Sunrise is at 6:29 am and sunset at 7:15 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam and Noordam on Tuesday.
  22. I have not sailed on Nieuw Statendam yet; Nieuw Amsterdam 2 or 3 times and thought it was a great ship. I did a 18 day Southeast Asia cruise on NCL Star about 3 years ago. In my review of the Star, I likened it to the Staten Island ferry. I realize that cruise line comparisons are very subjective but in terms of food quality, shipboard amenities and design and service, my experience is that Nieuw Amsterdam is vastly superior to the Star and I'd expect the same would hold true for Nieuw Statendam.
  23. JMO -- but I would book the Nieuw Amsterdam. We have sailed on that ship quite a few times and really like that ship. We like the larger cabins and the full Promenade Deck with deck chairs.
  24. Yes, the Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam have Neptunes on the corners of deck 10. On those ships the balcony definitely does not wrap around to the front, which can be seen at the very end of this video: http://halfacts.com/signature-class/10006-nieuw-amsterdam/
  25. What's the best way to get from the airport into the city, train, taxi? We're staying at the Movenpik which is were the ship docks. Allan
