  1. Yes, those (Regent and Oceania) plus some land tour are the brochures that have appeared in our other wise empty mail box. However, that emptiness is now changing with the myriad of political ads. We had perfect plans for this year. Vote early in person due to age and being away, take a Seabourn cruise, spend one night in Barcelona, then board a HAL ship for the Nieuw Amsterdam for a Collector's Voyage back to FLL. OOOPPPS! I just miss the planning of trying to combine tours/land adventures/tours right now!!!!! Let's get rid of this crud.....
  2. Seems that snail mail is going the way of the dodo bird... or so it seems. I still love it when I get an handwritten letter, let alone the VERY rare postcard (my aunt still sends me one when she travels). My question is about ship postcards - or rather, postcards with the image of ships that you're sailing on. I got one onboard the Carnival Inspiration (may she RIP) back in 2010. Sent it via the ship mailbox (they had one onboard!) The postcard arrived after 6 weeks, long after I had returned from my sailing! Then a hiatus of sailing until 2017 when I sailed on the Nieuw Amsterdam (LONG review on the HAL boards from the perspective of a DeafBlind person). It wasn't until I disembarked that I realized that I hadn't seen a ship postcard in the shops, nor a mailbox to mail it from. Did they disappear between 2010 and 2017? (Or if it was me who missed them with my less-than-normal eyes, were there any ship postcards available for HAL ships?) Which cruise/ship lines still have ship postcards available onboard? Any that still have the mailboxes in the lobby/near Guest Services desks? Any favorites of yours that you've kept over the years (either from a friend or mailing to yourself?) Is it still possible to mail stuff from the ship (given that you have postage ready)?

  4. We are looking at booking an Alaskan 14 day cruise tour for June/July 2021. They have the same itinerary. Which ship would you choose? Thank you for your input!
  5. Early 30s here. I started out on the Fantasy class ships of Carnival (not my choice - it was a Deaf group cruise), and while it was a good starting point, it was not the right fit for me. Like Bramcruiser said, this is my sentiment as well. Give me a steamer chair, a wraparound Promenade deck, traditional dining and tea, and shuffleboard any time and I'm content. I go not only for the itinerary but the ship as well. I would love to see more "history" onboard - let's not wipe the 147 years of HAL for something "new" - find a way to marry the new and the old. For me, even as a 8 year old back then, I still would have chosen HAL for the same reasons I choose it today. I became interested in ocean liners at that age, and by 13, I wanted to design ships (sadly that did not come to fruition as I was swayed by naysayers saying that girls shouldn't be interested in ships...). A good friend of the family did encourage this and picked up those brochures from TAs (back then when they still had deck plans included in them) and I would pour over them until they were dog-eared. I also had the coffee table books of the classic ocean liners with THEIR deck plans and beautiful pictures of their public rooms. I followed the construction of the RMS Queen Mary 2 diligently (despite not YET SAILED ON HER - something I need to remedy). I dragged my friend around the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, and she did not understand why I was perfectly content to sit on the Promenade Deck (she would be a great fit for RCI type cruises, needing to "do-do" stuff). At one point when I was 14, I toyed with what HAL would have looked like had they kept their colors of the 1930s-1950s and sketched over a profile of the Disney Magic/Wonder (I forget which one I used as example) and colored in with a white/gray hull and green/yellow/white funnels and yellow lifeboats. (I chose those two as they still had the "ocean liner" profiles). The sketch turned out well. Which brings me to branding - is there a reason why HAL consistently switches up its branding and logo? The others have recognizable branding and funnel colors that haven't changed (much) over the years, and are still recognizable. HAL on the other hand - funnels colors change from yellow/green/white to orange to white to blue/white with the Halve Maen superimposed onto the Nieuw Amsterdam of 1938, and then the little ship disappears and it's just NA. What's up with that? If they keep this up, then it might become unrecognizable. Even Carnival has stuck to their colors (and whale tail) over the years... This only adds to their 'being lost and not finding a direction" feelings. I saw on a thread from a few years ago that P&O had a similar sentiment about the changing of colors ("If the Old Guard doesn't like it, they can move over to Cunard" was one line that stuck out). So I'm torn on this - marketing strategies needed to rebrand to keep the lines going, but at the same time... ahhh. So what do I want to see? More enrichment options that is active, not passive (ie not just sitting and watching). While I love the lectures/port talks, I found the music options a bit too much (partly because I am Deaf, and partly because it's a bit overdone). I would love to see a return of organized deck sports (shuffleboard is already a given, but what about deck quoits? Scavenger hunts? (I so wanted to join the children on that one...) Betting on horses. Keep the "On Deck for a Cause" (though I don't believe they do that on the Koningsdam and (Nieuw) Statendam (let's drop the Nieuw on that one, shall we?), do they? Since they don't have room on their Promenade Decks for this? Please correct if I'm wrong). More arts/crafts/hands-on activities on the ship. (Many aspects of the children's actives is something I would have enjoyed). Bring back the libraries, but keep some of the EXC (they can work together - modern libraries do, so why can't that carry over shipboard? They can work together hand in hand.) Would love to see more shows in the showroom - dance revues would be fun! (Or musicals similar to HMS Pinafore, Anything Goes, Sail Away, (and I hear a Moby Dick show is coming in the theater world...) Another thing is that I would have enjoyed is the different decor theme ship by ship. (But definitely not to the extreme level of Farcus - - one can be nautical and celebrate the seafaring history of HAL, and the four Vista class ships - and the Eurodam - could have done a regional theme that actually matches their names...) While I understand the "branding" entertainment, I would have liked to see a different variety on the ships - they don't need to be cookie-cutter versions of each other. I was so grateful to have sailed the Nieuw Amsterdam prior to her Dec 2017 refit (which eliminated the library, took down "Manhattan" from the dining room name, and rebranded with the music stuff). That one had a character to her, and still felt "unique" despite sharing the same structure and layout as her sister. My friend, who is also a 30s something commented that many ships she has sailed on, lacked the "character" and was just "a ship" - a means of transportation to get from Point A to B and back to A, but she commented that the NA had "character" and could very much feel the "soul" of the ship itself. I think the decor for that one worked well, as they worked together to recreate the NYC feel (and the nods to history, given the photos in the corridors and the mini-museum of prior ships named the NA on the bottom of the atrium). I want the ship to feel like an old friend. I do hope that they do have SOME ties to the older Rotterdams on the newbuild, like they did with the Nieuw Amsterdam. So that's my two cents. And yes, I would be willing to shell out a bit more to keep the quality level instead of cutting corners, and keep the itineraries as they say, "savor the journey". To me, the "journey" is as much the itinerary as the shipboard life. So let's not forget one in favor of the other.

  7. Had checked in on the ships out in the anchorages where the ships have been hanging out south of Grand Bahama earlier today and noticed there was a lot of tender activity between the ships. Today was apparently the day that crew was moved accordingly for their rides home. They have all 3 left the area where they have been with a destination showing up on their AIS. Nieuw Amsterdam says Durban, South Africa. Volendam lists Bridgetown (probably Barbados) and Veendam is now en route to St. Thomas. They are all 3 doing 15- 17 knots located south of Abaco. Here's hoping a safe journey home for everyone and a safe return of the 3 ships in the fall. Will give me something to do to follow their journey. Eurodam is into her journey across the Pacific and in tandem with the Royal Princess and Carnival Panorama northeast of the Hawaiian Islands. This is also to bring crew home. Stay safe and healthy everyone. www.marinetraffic.com https://www.cruisemapper.com/

  11. I would love to see them again -- I have not laid eyes on them since I saw them in their original location aboard the 1938 Nieuw Amsterdam when I visited that ship at Port Everglades with my grandmother -- at that time past passengers could visit the ship (with some sort of reservation on the part of their TA, I think...). I remember having tea onboard and thinking that THIS was what a ship should look like. 12. Eastern Canada is down 1 vessel due to sale of Amsterdam - so a 50% reduction. Alaska so far remains mostly unchanged with 6 ships in the region (down from 7 due to sale of Maasdam) - Eurodam/Oosterdam r/t Seattle, Konigsdam/Volendam r/t Vancouver and Nieuw Amsterdam/Noordam on the N/S Vancover/Whittier sailings. The 14 day Alaska will not operate in 2021. This of course could change. The biggest region affected by the sale of the 4 ships and delay of Rotterdam VII (nee Ryndam) was Europe with a net loss of 2 ships (Veendam and Rotterdam VI ) and a slip in delivery of the new Rotterdam VII by several months.

  15. It is sad. But, Father, she was not the "Class" of the Holland America Line in my experience. Rotterdam V was the "Grand Dame" of HAL and none since have approached her ambiance. S. S. Nieuw Amsterdam of 1937 was considered to be the Netherlands "Ship of State". Rotterdam V was a worthy successor for the Nieuw Amsterdam. All of the HAL ships which have sailed under the HAL flag on which I have sailed have been excellent expressions of the HAL experience most of the time, but none have met the standards that I experienced on my cruises on Rotterdam V nor the one visit that I had on the Nieuw Amsterdam of 1937. Of course, this is my opinion. Others are welcome to differ. "

  17. Rich.. Your Daily is my "Go to" read every morning, much appreciated. I especially like to follow the position of all the HAL ships each day, looking for the signal that they are actually moving toward the embarkation port for their next cruise. As soon as I see a ship two days out from the date and port, I'll start booking like crazy. I'm a single cruiser, and fully retired, so it is not a big deal if I book too late to make a specific cruise, as I can just go on the next available one, pretty much anytime. The exception to that would be for a unique itinerary such as the Pacific Battles Cruise on Maasdam last year. I would have hated to have missed that one. I'd also hate to miss the Africa Circumnavigation on Zaandam in October 2021. Other than those an a few others, most sailings can be duplicated with a later sailing if I miss out because of a sold out condition, and so the actual date doesn't much matter to me. With that in mind, this is what I am watching... First let me say that my posts are prone to errors.. I am old and don't proof read very well, and the data in the rest of my post may have errors, and may already be obsolete by the time I post it. The purpose of my post is just to show what I am watching. Again, as soon as I see a ship two days out from the port, that will be my signal to book cruises for the coming year. Another good signal would be when I hear that crews have returned to a specific ship. Is it likely that the crews will be flown to the embarkation port, or will the ships all sail to the crew's home countries to pick them up on the way to their next embarkation post? Here is the list from your opening post today, with what I think is the first sailing for the ships, again, most likely with errors.. I am not focused on accuracy with my additions, just an overall picture. It seems like at this point, a lot depends on Ft. Lauderdale opening up. I live fairly close to Ft. Lauderdale, and would like to be one of the first passengers on the first HAL ship out, but again, if I miss the first one, then next one out will be fine with me. It would be great that if anyone hears any news on crew movements, that they would add it too. 21. As most of the regular posters, know, I am a HAL regular. I did my firstcruise in April 1996 on the old Enchaned Isle out of New Orleans, We were in port with the 1982 version of THe Nieuw Amsterdam. That November I went on that ship andhave Sailed HAL eversince. Frequently I am the Chaplain and sometimes I am a passenger. but always on HAL. For the past monyh I have getting offers from Celebrity. Is anyone else getting them? FYI, I have NEVER sailed wirh Celebeity.
  22. I disagree with you here. The only 2 HAL ships that have ever been transferred to P&OAU is the Statendam and Ryndam, which became the Pacific Eden and Pacific Aria. If we go back to when P&O merged with Sitmar, the ship based here was the Fairstar. When that was withdrawn from service the Fair Princess came to Australia. The next ship based here was the Pacific Sky which was the former Sky Princess. We then got the Pacific Sun, which was the former Carnival's Jubilee. Then Pacific Star was transferred from Costa Cruises which was the Costa Tropicale (formerly Carnival Tropicale). The first mega cruise ship was the Pacific Dawn (formerly the Regal Princess), then Pacific Jewel from Ocean Cruises (also formerly a Princess ship the Crown Princess) then Pacific Pearl (also from Ocean Cruises and when launched was Princess Star Princess. The current Pacific Explorer and future Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter are all from the Princess Fleet. So from the above you can see the majority of Princess fleet is destination P&OA. Prior to the transfer of HAL ships to the Australian fleet, the previous 2 Holland America ships to be transferred out of the fleet was the Noordam (Marella Celebration 2005) and Nieuw Amsterdam ( MS Patriot 2000 - 2002 and Marella Spirit 2003).
