  1. Yes, winner! 🙂 Statendam III is departing from HAL's 5th Street Pier in Hoboken, N.J. with the aid of one of Morgan Towing Corp tugs (hence, the big "M" on her stack) for her trek across the pond back to Rotterdam. Here's another one, this time of the "Darling of the Dutch," Nieuw Amsterdam II, departing Hoboken, again with the aid of several Morgan tugs (no side thrusters yet) around 1952/1953

  9. Hello. We finally got squared away on a BtoB on this ship and are very pleased. We had sailed on Eurodam previously and liked many things about her (BB Kings, Cabanas, size,etc.). I tried doing searches on VE cabins but could not find any info/ recommendations. We had booked 7111 and I saw subsequently 8013,14,20,23,24 were available. We generally like being higher and to the front of the ship but it would be greatly appreciated to hear any comments. What I gathered from skimming 33 pages of a post on a different site was that some balconies may be narrower, have more obstructed railings, and that some cabins may have shower vs/tub shower? None of the cabins above were listed specifically. So our laundry list questions would be: Would some cabins have larger balconies? Larger overhangs (prefer smaller) Potential noise issues? Walk in shower-preferred Thanks in advance for any guidance, Heathy and Happy Cruising.
  10. Rich.. Your Daily is my "Go to" read every morning, much appreciated. I especially like to follow the position of all the HAL ships each day, looking for the signal that they are actually moving toward the embarkation port for their next cruise. As soon as I see a ship two days out from the date and port, I'll start booking like crazy. I'm a single cruiser, and fully retired, so it is not a big deal if I book too late to make a specific cruise, as I can just go on the next available one, pretty much anytime. The exception to that would be for a unique itinerary such as the Pacific Battles Cruise on Maasdam last year. I would have hated to have missed that one. I'd also hate to miss the Africa Circumnavigation on Zaandam in October 2021. Other than those an a few others, most sailings can be duplicated with a later sailing if I miss out because of a sold out condition, and so the actual date doesn't much matter to me. With that in mind, this is what I am watching... First let me say that my posts are prone to errors.. I am old and don't proof read very well, and the data in the rest of my post may have errors, and may already be obsolete by the time I post it. The purpose of my post is just to show what I am watching. Again, as soon as I see a ship two days out from the port, that will be my signal to book cruises for the coming year. Another good signal would be when I hear that crews have returned to a specific ship. Is it likely that the crews will be flown to the embarkation port, or will the ships all sail to the crew's home countries to pick them up on the way to their next embarkation post? Here is the list from your opening post today, with what I think is the first sailing for the ships, again, most likely with errors.. I am not focused on accuracy with my additions, just an overall picture. It seems like at this point, a lot depends on Ft. Lauderdale opening up. I live fairly close to Ft. Lauderdale, and would like to be one of the first passengers on the first HAL ship out, but again, if I miss the first one, then next one out will be fine with me. It would be great that if anyone hears any news on crew movements, that they would add it too. 14. Eastern Canada is down 1 vessel due to sale of Amsterdam - so a 50% reduction. Alaska so far remains mostly unchanged with 6 ships in the region (down from 7 due to sale of Maasdam) - Eurodam/Oosterdam r/t Seattle, Konigsdam/Volendam r/t Vancouver and Nieuw Amsterdam/Noordam on the N/S Vancover/Whittier sailings. The 14 day Alaska will not operate in 2021. This of course could change. The biggest region affected by the sale of the 4 ships and delay of Rotterdam VII (nee Ryndam) was Europe with a net loss of 2 ships (Veendam and Rotterdam VI ) and a slip in delivery of the new Rotterdam VII by several months.

  16. Yes, those (Regent and Oceania) plus some land tour are the brochures that have appeared in our other wise empty mail box. However, that emptiness is now changing with the myriad of political ads. We had perfect plans for this year. Vote early in person due to age and being away, take a Seabourn cruise, spend one night in Barcelona, then board a HAL ship for the Nieuw Amsterdam for a Collector's Voyage back to FLL. OOOPPPS! I just miss the planning of trying to combine tours/land adventures/tours right now!!!!! Let's get rid of this crud.....
  17. Seven ships in port today with a possibility of 19,000 passengers debarking and an equal number embarking (glad I am not going to be at the FLL airport!). Eurodam will be at pier 19 (starboard to) from 0545-1700. She will be doing an 11-day Panama Canal Sunfarer cruise. We are leaving on the 128-day Grand World Voyage. I would be extremely surprised if we actually left at 1600, however. First of all, the paperwork we received said 1700 and secondly, there has not been a GWV departure before 2000 since I began watching the webcam. In fact, some have not left until closer to midnight. On that topic, I am going to post Sunday's sail-away this evening (Friday) because I may not have time on Saturday to post. Please note arrival and departure times will likely change between now and then and even the piers could change. If I have the time Saturday night I will put in a revised schedule and bump up the post.
  18. Seems that snail mail is going the way of the dodo bird... or so it seems. I still love it when I get an handwritten letter, let alone the VERY rare postcard (my aunt still sends me one when she travels). My question is about ship postcards - or rather, postcards with the image of ships that you're sailing on. I got one onboard the Carnival Inspiration (may she RIP) back in 2010. Sent it via the ship mailbox (they had one onboard!) The postcard arrived after 6 weeks, long after I had returned from my sailing! Then a hiatus of sailing until 2017 when I sailed on the Nieuw Amsterdam (LONG review on the HAL boards from the perspective of a DeafBlind person). It wasn't until I disembarked that I realized that I hadn't seen a ship postcard in the shops, nor a mailbox to mail it from. Did they disappear between 2010 and 2017? (Or if it was me who missed them with my less-than-normal eyes, were there any ship postcards available for HAL ships?) Which cruise/ship lines still have ship postcards available onboard? Any that still have the mailboxes in the lobby/near Guest Services desks? Any favorites of yours that you've kept over the years (either from a friend or mailing to yourself?) Is it still possible to mail stuff from the ship (given that you have postage ready)?

  22. I am scheduled to go on the Nieuw Amsterdam ship out of Fort Lauderdale on April 4th to Spain April 17th. We booked it through HAL directly, including the flight back. I'm trying to figure out if this will be canceled or changed in some way. Details are sparse from HAL directly. If Spain becomes a Corona virus target, would the ship go elsewhere, or would they potentially cancel the 13 day cruise entirely? Will HAL help with the flight back as it was booked through them? Definitely still looking forward to the trip, but also don't want to be in Quarantine for a month!
  23. The "Four Seasons" art would not "fit" on the current Nieuw Amsterdam because of her New York-themed decor. If there is an interest at HAL to continue the art connections of their new ships with those of the past, placing the "Four Seasons" on Rotterdam VII. As I have stated, that mural from Rotterdam V's forward bulkhead of the Ritz Carlton and duplicated on the forward bulkhead of the MDR's Upper Deck Restaurant on Rotterdam VI ought not to be overlooked. For me, the "Four Seasons" sculpture is wonderful to view. But, for me, that mural is more significant because I actually sailed on the ship that had that lovely piece of art. As a visitor in 1971 to the Nieuw Amsterdam of 1938, I saw the sculpture. It just doesn't mean the same to me as the Rotterdam V's mural.
  24. My wife and I have not cruised on any of the HAL ships. We are about ready to book a holiday trip for this year. My question is...all things being equal with the exception of cabin selection, should we do an inside cabin on the Nieuw Statendam or a balcony on the Nieuw Amsterdam? The cost is roughly the same for the inside and balcony. The Nieuw Staendam is a relatively new ship, and the the Nieuw Amsterdam was recently refurbished in 2018. My thinking is since there is limited daylight hours to enjoy the balcony, perhaps the inside cabin on the newer ship is the way to go. But I would appreciate any thoughts and suggestions from folks who have cruised on either or both ships. Thanks so much! Mick
